Godlike.Host offers hosted Rust servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Install Oxide/uMod first, stop the Rust server, copy Oxide.Ext.Discord.dll into the Rust application’s Managed directory, and start the server again. The DLL is an Oxide extension, not a chat plugin, so Discord features appear only after you install a compatible Discord plugin and configure that plugin with a private Discord bot token.
What you are installing
Oxide.Ext.Discord.dll is a bridge between an Oxide/uMod-enabled Rust server and Discord. It supplies the Discord connection layer that other Oxide plugins call. It does not, by itself, create a chat relay, moderation commands, player notifications, or a bot in your Discord server.

A complete setup has three separate pieces:
- Oxide/uMod: the mod framework running inside the Rust dedicated server.
- Oxide.Ext.Discord.dll: the extension loaded by the Rust application.
- A Discord feature plugin: a C#
.csplugin, such as a Discord chat or Discord core plugin, that uses the extension to provide a specific feature.
Keeping these pieces separate explains most installation mistakes. The extension belongs beside the Rust server’s managed assemblies. C# plugins belong in oxide/plugins. A bot token belongs in the configuration or data file required by the feature plugin, never in a public post or source repository.
Prerequisites and checks
Verify Oxide/uMod before touching Discord files
The server must already run Oxide/uMod successfully. In the server console, or in chat if you have permission, run:

oxide.version
A working installation should return the installed Oxide version. The official uMod installation guidance requires a host that supports Oxide 2.0 or newer. If the command is unknown, returns an error, or produces no Oxide version, repair the framework first; the Discord extension cannot load without it.
Confirm access and a maintenance window
You need permission to stop and start the dedicated server and to write files in its installation directory. On a self-managed machine, use the account that owns the Rust server files. On a rented server, you normally need the provider’s FTP client or web file manager. Schedule a brief outage because the extension is normally read during startup rather than loaded into a running process.
Record your current state
Before replacing an existing DLL, note its current version and make a backup copy. Also record the versions required by every Discord plugin you use. This gives you a rollback path if a new extension major version is incompatible with an older plugin.

Some server layouts use RustDedicated/Managed instead of RustDedicated_Data/Managed. The defining characteristic is that the directory is the Rust application’s Managed folder containing the server’s managed assemblies. Do not choose a similarly named folder under oxide.
Installation procedure
1. Confirm the framework and identify the installation
- Connect to the server console or in-game administrator chat.
- Run
oxide.versionand save the result for your notes. - Open the Rust dedicated-server installation in your local file browser or remote file manager.
- Locate the Rust application directory and its
Managedsubdirectory. The usual path isRustDedicated_Data/Managed; another valid layout isRustDedicated/Managed.
If you cannot locate either path, do not place the DLL in a guessed directory. Ask the host where the Rust application files are stored and whether your account has permission to modify them.
2. Stop the Rust server
Use the host’s stop control or the server-management command that performs a clean shutdown. Wait until the process is fully stopped and the console no longer reports the server as running. Copying over a loaded assembly can fail, leave a partial file, or result in the old code remaining in memory until the next restart.

3. Obtain the extension archive
Download the current Oxide.Ext.Discord release from the uMod extension page or the project’s release source. If the download is an archive, extract it on your computer first. The file you need is named exactly Oxide.Ext.Discord.dll.
Do not rename the file, upload the compressed archive as if it were the extension, or copy unrelated source files into the managed directory. If an archive contains several platform or version folders, follow the release’s file layout and select the DLL intended for your Rust server build.
4. Back up an existing DLL
If Oxide.Ext.Discord.dll is already present, copy it to a safe backup location while the server is stopped. You can add the old version number to the backup filename outside the server directory. Keeping the backup allows you to restore the previous extension if a plugin reports a compatibility failure after the upgrade.
5. Copy the DLL to Managed
- Open the Rust application’s
Manageddirectory. - Copy
Oxide.Ext.Discord.dlldirectly into that directory. - Allow the file manager to replace the old file only after you have made your backup.
- Check that the final path is the Rust
Managedpath, notoxide/plugins.
The extension is a compiled DLL. Oxide does not compile it from a C# source file in the plugins folder.
6. Start the server and inspect startup output
Start the server normally. Because extensions are generally loaded at startup, a restart is required after an installation or replacement. Watch the console from process launch through the point where Oxide reports that plugins are being loaded. Look for an extension-loading error, a missing dependency, an architecture or file-access error, or a message identifying the loaded Discord extension.
Do not treat a server that merely reaches the world-loading screen as proof that Discord is configured. The extension can load correctly while a feature plugin is absent, disabled, misconfigured, or unable to authenticate.

7. Install the Discord feature plugin separately
Download a Discord plugin that provides the behavior you actually want, such as chat relay, notifications, or administration commands. Place its C# .cs file in oxide/plugins while the server is running or stopped according to the plugin’s instructions. Oxide compiles plugins placed there. Read the plugin documentation for its required extension version, configuration path, Discord permissions, and channel settings.
After the plugin is loaded, inspect its generated configuration. Do not assume every plugin uses the same key names or data-file format. The extension supplies the transport; the plugin determines which events, channels, and commands are exposed.

Create and protect the Discord bot credential
Why a bot is required
Discord requests are authenticated with an API key, commonly presented to the plugin as the bot token obtained from a Discord application. The extension’s project documentation gives an explicit warning: “DO NOT SHARE YOUR API KEY!” Treat the token like a password with authority to act as the bot.
Safe credential workflow
- Create a Discord application in Discord’s developer interface.
- Add a bot to that application and obtain its token through the developer interface.
- Invite the bot to the intended Discord server with only the permissions required by your chosen plugin.
- Enter the token only in the plugin configuration or data location specified by that plugin.
- Restart or reload the plugin if its documentation requires a reload for configuration changes.
Never paste the token into console screenshots, public issue reports, chat messages, tutorial examples, backup repositories, or configuration files that are publicly downloadable. Redact it before sharing logs. If you suspect that it was exposed, regenerate the token in Discord’s developer interface and replace the old value in the plugin configuration.
Keep Discord permissions narrow
A chat relay may need permission to read and send messages in selected channels. A moderation integration may need additional permissions. Grant only what the plugin documents, then restrict the bot to the channels it must use. Excess permissions increase the impact of a leaked token or a plugin misconfiguration.
Check version compatibility before upgrading
Extension upgrades are not automatically backward-compatible. uMod specifically warns that plugins made for extension versions 1.0.0 or 2.0.0 are not compatible with extension version 3.0.0. Treat the extension’s major version and every plugin’s declared dependency as a hard compatibility gate.

Before upgrading, list each Discord plugin and its required extension major version. Stop the server, back up the current DLL and plugin configuration, replace the extension, restart, and read the complete startup log. If plugins fail immediately, restore the prior DLL or install plugin releases that support the new major version.
Remote-server installation
The file operation is the same on a remote host, but the control panel changes the workflow. Confirm all of the following before purchasing or redeploying a server:
- The service explicitly supports Oxide/uMod for the Rust build you intend to run.
- Your account can reach both the Rust
Manageddirectory andoxide/plugins. - FTP, SFTP, or a web file manager allows DLL and plugin uploads.
- You can stop and start the process, not merely issue a soft map restart.
- Plugin files and configuration persist after a restart, update, or redeployment.
- Backups can be created and restored before extension upgrades.
- Support can confirm which Rust/Oxide build is currently installed.
Use the host’s file manager or FTP client to locate the same Rust Managed path. Upload the DLL only while the process is stopped, then use the host’s start control and inspect the live console. If the panel hides the application directory or prevents restarts, ask support for the exact path and the required maintenance procedure rather than uploading files into an arbitrary plugin directory.

Testing in layers isolates failures quickly:
- Framework layer: run
oxide.version. A failure here means Oxide/uMod is not healthy. - File layer: confirm the exact filename and path:
Oxide.Ext.Discord.dllin the Rust application’sManageddirectory. - Startup layer: restart and check the console for extension-loading errors.
- Plugin layer: confirm the Discord feature plugin appears in Oxide’s loaded-plugin output and generates its expected configuration.
- Authentication layer: verify the bot token and Discord permissions without exposing the token.
- Feature layer: perform one documented action, such as sending a test chat message or triggering a notification, in the channel configured for the bot.
A successful framework check does not prove the DLL loaded, and a loaded DLL does not prove that a plugin authenticated. Record which layer fails before changing files.

oxide.version fails
Install or repair Oxide/uMod and confirm that the host supports Oxide 2.0 or newer. Do not continue with Discord troubleshooting until the framework command works.
The extension is not found
Check that the filename is exactly Oxide.Ext.Discord.dll, including capitalization and the single .dll extension. Verify that it is directly inside the Rust application’s Managed directory. A DLL in oxide/plugins, an unextracted archive, or a nested extraction folder will not be discovered as the extension.

The server starts but the plugin fails
Compare the plugin’s declared dependency with the installed extension major version. Version 1.x and 2.x plugins do not work with extension 3.0.0 according to uMod. Install a compatible plugin release or restore an extension version supported by the plugin, then restart and check the console again.

Re-enter the bot token exactly as issued, check that the token has not been regenerated, and confirm that the bot is invited to the correct Discord server. If the token appeared in a public location, regenerate it first, update the private plugin configuration, and restart or reload as required. Do not publish the failing token while asking for help.
There is no Discord behavior after installation
The extension alone has no user-facing chat or notification feature. Install a compatible Discord plugin in oxide/plugins, allow Oxide to compile it, complete its configuration, and verify that the bot has the required channel permissions.
A remote host will not let you complete the copy
Ask the host for FTP or file-manager access to the Rust application directory and for permission to stop and start the server. If the provider manages the Rust installation and blocks DLL uploads, request that support install the extension or move to a plan that permits Oxide/uMod extensions and persistent plugin files.
Safe maintenance and rollback
Keep a dated record of the Rust build, Oxide version, Discord extension version, plugin versions, and configuration backups. Upgrade one dependency at a time so a failure has a clear cause. Stop the server before replacing the extension, preserve the previous DLL, start the server, and read the startup output before allowing players to reconnect.
If the new extension prevents plugins from loading, stop the server, restore the backed-up DLL, confirm that the filename and path are unchanged, and start the server again. If the problem began after a plugin update rather than an extension update, restore the plugin and its configuration instead. Never delete the bot token from a backup without understanding whether the plugin stores other required settings alongside it, but keep all backups access-controlled.
