The simplest way to install the current Deno release on Ubuntu is Deno’s official shell installer:
curl -fsSL https://deno.land/install.sh | sh
It installs Deno for your user, normally puts the executable in ~/.deno/bin/deno, and adds a shell environment line so that directory can be placed on your PATH. Open a new terminal, then confirm the runtime with deno --version. Ubuntu has no official Deno apt repository; Snap, distribution packages, and npm-based installation are alternatives with different freshness and administration trade-offs.

Choose an Ubuntu installation method
Your best method depends on who should own the executable, how tightly you need to control updates, and whether Deno will run interactively on the host or inside a container.

For most developers on a normal Ubuntu workstation or server, use the shell installer. Choose a package manager only when its provenance and update policy satisfy your organization, and choose a manual archive when you need an explicitly selected binary.

Before you install Deno
Confirm the shell and CPU architecture
The official installer is a shell command that downloads and places a single executable. A normal Ubuntu user account with a home directory is enough for the default per-user installation. The command requires curl; if Ubuntu reports that curl is missing, install that prerequisite through your approved Ubuntu package-management process and rerun the installer.
For a manual installation, identify the machine architecture before selecting an archive:
x86_64systems usedeno-x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu.zip.arm64systems usedeno-aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu.zip.
Do not select an archive solely because Ubuntu is 64-bit; match the archive to the CPU architecture. A per-user install avoids sudo. A system-wide install into /usr/local/bin requires administrator privileges and affects every user whose PATH includes that directory.
Decide where the command should work
If you are developing as one Ubuntu user, keep Deno in your home directory. This limits changes to that account and lets you update or remove the runtime without changing other users. Shared servers, classroom images, and controlled build machines may instead use a centrally managed package or a system-wide manually installed binary. Containers are a separate environment: installing Deno in one container does not install it on the Ubuntu host.
Install Deno with the official shell installer

Run the official Linux installer:
curl -fsSL https://deno.land/install.sh | shThe flags make

Review your organization’s policy for piping a downloaded script to a shell; if your policy requires inspection, download the script first, inspect it, and execute the approved local copy. -
Let the script complete. The normal destination is
$HOME/.deno/bin/deno. Deno is distributed as a single binary executable with no external runtime dependencies, so the installation does not create a separate library tree that must be configured.Special offer. Start a new terminal session. The installer may append a line such as
. "$HOME/.deno/env"to.bashrc,.zshrc, or.profile. That line updates the environment for future shells. Starting a new shell is the least ambiguous way to load it. -
Verify the installation:
deno --versionA successful command prints Deno’s version information. This check tests both that the executable exists and that your current shell can find it through

Reload the current shell without opening another terminal
If you know which startup file the installer changed, source that file in the current shell. For Bash, for example:
. ~/.bashrc
If the installer used .profile or you use another shell, source the corresponding file instead. When in doubt, close the terminal and open a new one; this avoids applying the wrong startup file or loading an outdated environment.

Understand the Deno binary location and PATH
The default shell installation is user-scoped. Its executable is normally at ~/.deno/bin/deno, while the environment file is at ~/.deno/env. The environment file exports the path information needed for the deno command. It is not the executable itself.
To inspect what your current shell can see, run:
command -v denoto show the executable selected byPATH.echo "$PATH"to inspect the directories searched by the shell.ls -l ~/.deno/bin/denoto check whether the default executable exists.
If you deliberately set the DENO_INSTALL environment variable before running the installer, use $DENO_INSTALL/bin instead of assuming ~/.deno/bin. The installer’s environment-source line reflects that non-default location.
Fix “deno: command not found” on Ubuntu
A command-not-found result usually means the executable was installed but the current shell has not loaded the new path. Follow these checks in order rather than reinstalling immediately.
1. Start a new shell
Close the terminal, open a new one, and run deno --version. This loads startup-file changes that were not present when the old shell began.

Run ls -l ~/.deno/bin/deno. If the file exists, the installation completed and the remaining problem is environment configuration. If you used a custom DENO_INSTALL value, check $DENO_INSTALL/bin/deno instead.
3. Check the startup-file entry
Look in the startup file used by your shell for a line resembling . "$HOME/.deno/env". The installer may have written it to .bashrc, .zshrc, or .profile. A line in a file that your shell does not read will not change the current command search path.

4. Load the correct file manually
Source the file containing the Deno environment line, then retry:
deno --version
If the command works after sourcing the file but fails in newly opened terminals, review which shell Ubuntu launches and place the environment line in the startup file that shell actually reads.

command -v deno can reveal that another package-managed or manually copied executable is being selected first. Decide which installation should be authoritative, then remove or reorder the unwanted path rather than keeping several untracked copies.
Can you install Deno with apt, Snap, or npm?
apt and Ubuntu repositories
Deno does not publish an official apt repository. Therefore, an instruction that adds a Deno-owned apt source is not part of Deno’s official Ubuntu installation path. Ubuntu or third-party distribution packages may exist, but they are community maintained and can lag behind the current release. Before using one, verify who publishes it, which Deno version it contains, how security updates are delivered, and whether your organization accepts that source.
A distribution package can still be appropriate for a managed fleet where centralized policy, auditing, and repeatable updates matter more than immediately receiving the newest Deno release. Record the package source and version so another administrator can reproduce the installation.
Snap
Snap packages are also community maintained for this purpose. Their confinement, refresh behavior, publisher identity, and available version should be checked in the same way as any other third-party package. A Snap installation may place the command in a location and environment managed by Snap rather than in ~/.deno/bin; use command -v deno and deno --version instead of assuming the shell-installer layout.

npm
If npm is already part of your approved JavaScript toolchain, the available command is:
npm install -g deno
The global npm prefix determines where npm exposes the command, so the resulting path can differ from the shell installer’s location. Verify with deno --version and inspect command -v deno. Treat npm’s package publisher, release timing, and update process as separate from Deno’s shell installer; do not assume that installing through npm gives the same version cadence.

Install Deno manually from a release archive
Manual installation is useful when you need to pin a release, stage files in an internal repository, or avoid a shell installer. Each Deno release archive has a matching SHA-256 file, allowing you to verify the download before putting the executable on your PATH.

Select the archive for the machine:

Download the archive and its matching SHA-256 file from the same Deno release. Keep both files together while checking the digest. Use your organization’s approved download and verification procedure; do not skip the checksum merely because the archive is small.

Unzip the archive. The extracted file is named
deno. -
Choose an installation scope. Move the executable to
~/.local/binfor one user, or to/usr/local/binfor a system-wide installation. The system-wide destination normally requiressudo. -
Make the file executable:
chmod +x denoIf you moved it before changing permissions, run

Ensure that destination is on
PATH. For a user install, add~/.local/binthrough your normal shell startup configuration if Ubuntu does not already include it. For a system install, verify that the target machine’s users receive/usr/local/binin their path. -
Open a new shell and run
deno --version. Also runcommand -v denoto confirm that the intended copy, rather than an older package, is selected.Best Value

Why verify the archive checksum?
A matching SHA-256 value confirms that the file you extracted is byte-for-byte the release artifact represented by the published checksum. It does not replace checking the release source or your organization’s trust policy, but it detects corruption and an altered download before execution.
Update an existing Deno installation
For an installation managed by the Deno shell method, run:

Run the command from a shell that already resolves the intended Deno executable. If multiple installations exist, command -v deno tells you which one the upgrade command will use. Package-managed installations should be updated through their package manager, while manually installed archives should be replaced according to the same release-selection, checksum, permission, and PATH procedure used for the original installation.
In a controlled environment, decide whether updates should follow the newest release automatically or a tested, pinned version. The shell installer is optimized for obtaining the current Linux release; a manual archive provides explicit version control.
Uninstall Deno cleanly
Shell-script installation

Run
deno cleanwhile the existing executable is still available. This clears Deno’s local cache and related generated data before removal. -
Delete the installation directory:
rm -rf ~/.denoUse the exact directory you selected if

Remove the Deno environment-source line from every shell startup file where the installer added it, such as
.bashrc,.zshrc, or.profile. -
Open a new terminal and run
command -v deno. No path should be returned unless another installation remains.
Package or manual installations
Remove a Snap, distribution package, or npm installation with the same package manager that installed it. For a manual install, delete the copied executable from ~/.local/bin or /usr/local/bin, then remove any path entry you added for it. If another Deno copy is still on PATH, the command may continue to work after one copy is removed.
Use Deno in an Ubuntu-based container
Deno publishes official Docker images for Ubuntu and other Linux variants. A container image is appropriate when the application, runtime version, and operating-system userspace should be built together and reproduced in CI or deployment. It is not a shortcut for installing Deno on the host: the executable exists inside the container filesystem, and host terminals will not find it unless Deno is installed separately on the host.
For a containerized service, choose and record an image tag, keep the application files and configuration outside the image where appropriate, and establish an image-update process. The same verification principle applies inside the container: run deno --version during image validation or startup diagnostics. Use the per-user shell installation for interactive Ubuntu work and an official container image when the operational unit is the container itself.
