Install and verify a vanilla DayZ dedicated server first, then add Community Framework, Dabs Framework, and the current DayZ Expansion Bundle. Copy every supplied .bikey file into the server root’s keys directory, launch with a semicolon-separated -mod list that exactly matches the folders on disk, and start once to generate the Expansion settings in the server profile. Add mission files and optional features only after the base installation works.
Decide where the server will run
You can install Expansion on a machine you administer directly or on a managed DayZ host. The installation logic is the same, but a managed panel may hide the executable, profile path, keys directory, or launch parameters. Before committing to a host, confirm that you can upload mod folders, deploy key files, edit the complete startup command, read profile and RPT logs, and restart the process after updates.

Prepare a clean DayZ dedicated server
Expansion should be added to a server that already starts and remains stable without third-party content. This gives you a known-good command and makes the first Expansion failure identifiable.
Install or update the server with SteamCMD
SteamCMD uses DayZ dedicated-server app ID 223350. Replace the installation path with a real Windows or Linux path and keep the command in a repeatable script so updates can be reproduced:

steamcmd +force_install_dir /path/to/server +login anonymous +app_update 223350 validate +quitOn Windows, use the equivalent Windows path syntax accepted by your SteamCMD installation. Do not mix the game server’s installation directory with a separate provider mod directory unless the provider documents that arrangement. The important result is a server tree containing the executable, configuration files, and a root-level keys directory (create that directory if the installation does not already contain it).
Prove the vanilla baseline
- Launch the unmodified server with its existing configuration and port.
- Wait for it to reach its normal running state rather than stopping at the first startup message.
- Record the working executable location, configuration filename, profile location, and port.
- Stop the server cleanly and back up the working configuration before adding mods.
Do not add mission files, traders, mappings, or other optional content during this baseline test. A stable vanilla start is the reference point for every later change.
Install the Expansion dependency set
The current Expansion documentation identifies Community Framework (CF) and Dabs Framework (DF) as essential dependencies. The DayZ-Expansion-Bundle is the all-in-one Expansion package. DayZ-Expansion-Licensed and DayZ-Expansion-Animations are separate additions, not interchangeable names for the Bundle. Dependency composition and Workshop names can change, so check the current project documentation whenever you create a new installation or update an existing one.
Download the folders
Obtain the current server copies of CF, DF, and the Expansion package, plus any separate additions you intentionally use. Put each downloaded mod folder in the server installation directory or in the mod directory designated by your hosting provider. Keep one folder per mod and do not place the contents of one mod inside another.

The name used in the startup command is the directory name that actually exists on disk. A Workshop display title is not necessarily the same as that directory name. If your provider cannot handle spaces in a folder name, rename the folder to a simple name and use that exact renamed value in the command; apply the same name to every client installation.
Keep client-required content symmetrical
Any mod that supplies content a player must load belongs in both the server’s and the player’s required mod sets. Every player should use the same effective list and compatible versions. A server-only administration or utility mod can instead be loaded with -servermod; it is not sent to clients. Do not put client-required Expansion content in -servermod, or clients will lack the files needed to join.
Install signature keys correctly
Each mod folder contains a key directory. Copy every .bikey file found there into the dedicated server’s root keys directory. Repeat this for CF, DF, the Bundle, and every additional mod you load.
- Open a downloaded mod folder.
- Open its
keysubfolder. - Copy each file ending in
.bikeyto<server-root>/keys. - Repeat for every installed mod, preserving the original filenames.
- After a mod update, compare the new
keyfolder with the server’skeysdirectory and copy any new or replaced keys.
A missing or stale key commonly produces a signature error or prevents a player from joining. Keys are server-side verification files; they do not belong in the mission folder and should not be referenced as part of the -mod value.

Build the launch command
Bohemia’s server parameters define -config for the server configuration file, -port for the listening port, -profiles for the profile/log directory, -mod for client-loaded mod subfolders, and -serverMod for server-only subfolders. The -mod value is a semicolon-separated list; each entry must resolve to a real directory.

Use a known-good Windows pattern
This representative command follows the Expansion installation pattern. Adapt the executable, profile directory, port, and optional logging switches to your server:

On Linux or a control panel, enter the same parameters in the form required by that environment; do not paste the Windows start wrapper where it is not supported.
Check the command before launching
- Confirm the executable exists in the directory from which the command runs.
- Confirm
serverDZ.cfgexists at the path supplied to-config. - Confirm every semicolon-delimited
-modentry is an actual folder. - Confirm the profile path is writable and not accidentally the mod directory.
- Confirm the selected port is available and matches your firewall or host panel settings.
- Confirm the client has the same required mods, names, and compatible versions.
Start once and locate Expansion settings
Launch the server with the dependency and Bundle folders enabled before importing any mission content. On the first successful start with Expansion loaded, the server creates an ExpansionMod directory inside the profile directory. The profile may be named profile, sc, server profile, instance_xxxx, or config, depending on the host.

If you cannot find the settings, first verify the value of -profiles and check that the server actually reached a running state with the intended mod version. Do not edit generated Expansion files while the process is still starting, and do not assume that the installation root is the profile path. Once the correct ExpansionMod directory exists, stop the server before making configuration changes and keep a backup of the original files.
Import mission files separately
Expansion’s item, vehicle, weapon, trader, and mapping data is not installed merely by adding the mod folders to -mod. Obtain the current mission content from the DayZ-Expansion-Missions repository and follow its README_TUTORIAL.txt. The exact files and paths depend on the mission and map you run.
Choose only content that matches your server
- Use mission files intended for the installed map.
- Use files compatible with the installed Expansion and dependency versions.
- Treat trader and mapping imports as optional feature choices, not mandatory parts of the base installation.
- Import one feature group at a time and restart before adding another.
Mission imports can change gameplay data even when the executable and mod command are correct. Keep a copy of the last known-good mission directory so you can revert without reinstalling the entire server.

- Baseline: start the vanilla server and confirm it remains stable.
- Dependencies: add CF, DF, and the current Expansion package using the provider’s exact folder names.
- Keys: copy every dependency and Expansion
.bikeyinto the rootkeysdirectory. - Arguments: check
-config,-profiles,-port, and each-modpath against real files and directories. - Logging: start with available network and administrator logging enabled, then inspect the profile directory for RPT output and crash logs.
- Client test: join from a client carrying the same required mods and compatible versions.
- Mission features: add mission files and optional Expansion features one change at a time, restarting after each change.
This order isolates failures. If the client can join the base Expansion server before mission imports, a later failure is confined to the newest mission or feature change rather than the complete installation.

Troubleshoot startup and join failures
The server exits immediately
Check command syntax first. A missing executable, invalid -config path, malformed quote, or a profile directory that cannot be created can stop startup before Expansion reports anything useful. Then verify that every -mod folder exists exactly as typed. Remove the newest optional mod or mission import and reproduce from the last known-good command.

Players receive a signature or key error
Open every installed mod’s key folder and compare its .bikey files with the server root keys directory. Copy missing or replaced keys after each update. A key copied into the wrong mod folder, mission folder, or client-only location will not satisfy server verification.
The client cannot join because of missing or mismatched mods
Compare the server’s effective -mod list with the client’s required list, including spelling, spaces, renamed folders, and versions. Ensure client-required content was not placed in -servermod. Remove duplicate or obsolete copies from the client so it loads one consistent version of each dependency.
Expansion loads but settings seem absent
Look under the directory supplied to -profiles, not only beside the executable. Host panels may label that location profile, sc, server profile, instance_xxxx, or config. The ExpansionMod folder appears only after a successful start with Expansion active; a failed launch will not generate it.
The server fails after adding a trader, map, or other feature
Undo the newest mission import or optional mod and restart. Read crash_timedate.log and other timestamped logs in the server profile, then reintroduce one change at a time. Confirm that the mission content matches both the installed map and the current mod set before trying the feature again.

- Run the SteamCMD update command from a saved script rather than updating ad hoc.
- After every mod update, check for changed
.bikeyfiles and copy them to the rootkeysdirectory. - Record the exact folder names and launch command in your deployment notes.
- Back up
serverDZ.cfg, the profile directory includingExpansionMod, mission files, and any provider-specific data before updates. - Update dependencies and the Bundle as a coordinated set; dependency names and composition may change in current documentation.
- Restart and test with one client before reopening the server to the full player group.
- Keep the previous mod folders and mission backup available until the updated combination has passed a join test.
When managed hosting is the better fit
Self-hosting is appropriate when you need unrestricted file access, custom launch parameters, automated update scripts, and direct control of networking. Managed hosting can reduce operating-system and network administration, but only if its panel exposes the controls Expansion requires. Ask specifically about current CF and DF support, the DayZ-Expansion-Bundle, separate additions, Workshop update timing, automatic key deployment, profile/log access, backup restoration, and the ability to add mission files. Verify current pricing and capacity directly with the provider; no universal price or performance figure applies to this installation.
