To run Banov, install two separate pieces: the Banov Workshop mod and its matching empty.banov mission folder. Then place BANOV.bikey in the server’s keys directory, set template="empty.banov" in serverDZ.cfg, and add @Banov to the server’s mod parameter. A server can have the map files and still load the wrong world if the mission template is not set, or reject connections if the key and client content do not match.
The procedure below covers a manually managed server, a hosting-panel installation, first-start validation, updates, custom XML preservation, and the failures most often seen after adding Banov or updating DayZ.
What you need before installing Banov
- Dedicated-server file access: You need permission to stop the server, copy Workshop files, edit
serverDZ.cfg, place files in the mission directory, and copy keys. - A backup: Save the current server directory and mission configuration before changing anything. Include custom XML files such as
types.xmlandevents.xml. - The matching Banov package: Banov is distributed as DayZ Workshop content plus a separate mission package. You need both; downloading only the map mod is not enough.
- A compatible client: Every player joining must have the same Banov Workshop content installed and enabled by the DayZ launcher or the relevant client launcher.
- The correct Steam application context: The dedicated-server application is identified by app ID
223350. The DayZ client uses app ID221100, which is also the context in which players obtain Workshop content. Do not target the client app ID when installing the server application. - A vanilla test plan: Start with Banov alone, or with the smallest known-good set of server mods. Add gameplay and administration mods only after the map starts and a player can connect.
File and log locations vary by operating system, provider, and control panel. The names, settings, and folder relationships below are the parts that must match.
How Banov’s files fit together
Banov has two independent installation surfaces:
- Workshop map mod: This supplies the world content and is normally represented in the launch line by
@Banov. - Mission folder: The matching mission files are extracted into a folder named
empty.banov. The server uses this folder when the mission template is set to that exact name.
The mod and mission are related but not interchangeable. A correct template setting cannot replace missing Workshop files, and copying the Workshop folder does not create the mission configuration. The mod’s BANOV.bikey is a third requirement: it enables signature verification when the server checks signed content.

Manual installation on a dedicated server
1. Stop the server and make a recoverable backup
- Stop the DayZ server cleanly from its service manager, terminal session, or hosting panel.
- Copy the complete server configuration and mission data to a dated backup location.
- Record any custom edits to
types.xml,events.xml, economy files, spawn files, or other mission XML. Do not assume a future Banov mission update will preserve your changes.
Do not edit mission files while the server is running. A live process can overwrite settings or leave partially written files in the event of a crash.
2. Obtain the Workshop mod and matching mission files
Subscribe to or download Banov from the DayZ Steam Workshop, and obtain the mission files intended for that Banov release. Extract the mission package into a directory named exactly empty.banov. Keep the capitalization and punctuation unchanged; the name is referenced literally by the configuration.
Copy the Banov Workshop content to the server’s mod-content location. On a manually administered installation, the folder is commonly exposed as @Banov, but the physical path depends on how SteamCMD or the server files were installed. Preserve the package’s internal structure rather than copying only selected subfolders.
3. Install the signature key
- Open the Banov mod’s
keysfolder. - Copy
BANOV.bikeyinto the dedicated server’s top-levelkeysdirectory. - Check that the filename remains
BANOV.bikeyand that it was not renamed with an additional extension such as.txt.
The key belongs in the server’s key directory, not inside the mission folder. A missing or misplaced key commonly produces signature or key-verification errors during startup or when a client connects.
4. Put the mission in the server’s mission directory
Place the complete empty.banov folder beneath the server’s mission directory. Do not nest it accidentally, for example as empty.banov/empty.banov, and do not leave the extracted files one level above the folder. The directory should expose the mission files directly under the folder whose name is empty.banov.

The exact parent directory name differs between server layouts. Use the location where your existing DayZ missions reside, then verify that the folder name is identical to the value you will put in serverDZ.cfg.
5. Select the Banov mission in serverDZ.cfg
Open the server configuration and change the mission block’s template value to:
template="empty.banov";Keep the quotation marks and spelling. If the server starts on another world, this setting and the actual mission-folder name are the first things to compare. A folder named empty.Banov, Empty.banov, or another variation is not the same reference on systems that treat case as significant.
6. Load Banov in the server’s mod parameter
Add @Banov to the launch command’s mod list. For example, a mod list may use a semicolon-delimited value such as:
-mod=@Banov;@AnotherModThe example illustrates the separator only. Keep the syntax used by your existing launch script or service definition, and do not remove required parameters. If Banov is the only mod, the value can be simply -mod=@Banov. If the server uses a panel field instead of a command line, enter the same mod name in that field and preserve the panel’s required delimiter format.

7. Start and read the logs before adding anything else
- Start the server with Banov and no newly added gameplay mods.
- Open the server’s configured console or log viewer and look for mission-loading, mod-loading, signature, and XML parsing errors.
- Do not rely on a single “server started” message. Confirm that the process remains running and that the mission reaches its normal ready state.
- Record the exact error text before changing files. There is no universal log path or one fix for every error; the message determines whether the problem is a path, key, XML, or incompatible-mod issue.
8. Connect with a matching client and test persistence
Join with a client that has the Banov Workshop content installed. Test more than the server browser:
- Spawn at least once and confirm the terrain and landmarks are Banov rather than the default world.
- Move between several areas to detect missing or corrupt map assets.
- Check that loot appears and that ordinary interactions work.
- Log out, restart the server if practical, and reconnect to verify persistence.
Only after this baseline works should you introduce additional mods, custom economy edits, or large XML changes.
Installing Banov through a hosting panel
Managed hosts use different labels and file permissions, but the documented pattern is consistent:
- Stop the DayZ server.
- Open the panel’s Mod Manager or equivalent tool.
- Find Banov under a category such as Community Maps.
- Install the map through the panel.
- Start the server and inspect its console or log view.
Some panels copy the mission, key, and mod parameter automatically; others expose those as separate controls. Confirm that the resulting configuration still contains template="empty.banov", that BANOV.bikey is present in the server keys directory, and that the launch mod list contains @Banov. Panel labels and behavior are provider-specific, so use the current instructions for the panel you operate rather than assuming that every host manages missions identically.

A fresh or otherwise vanilla server is the safest starting point. If the panel installation fails, remove other custom mods, reinstall Banov, and prove the map works before restoring the rest of the mod list.

First-start validation checklist
Use this checklist before declaring the installation complete:
- The server process stays online after startup.
- The active mission is
empty.banov, not a default DayZ mission. - The Workshop content is loaded as
@Banov. BANOV.bikeyexists in the server’skeysdirectory.- A client with matching Workshop content can join without a signature error.
- The player spawns in Banov, loot generates, and normal interactions work.
- A reconnect or restart preserves the test character and expected world state.
- No XML, mission-path, or mod-loading errors remain in the log.
Updating Banov without losing custom work
Banov’s Workshop map and mission are separate update surfaces. Treat them as separate changes rather than replacing the entire server directory in one operation.
Back up before each update
Stop the server and copy the active mission, configuration, and custom XML files. At minimum, preserve edited types.xml and events.xml; also include any other economy, spawn, or event files you changed.
Update the Workshop map and mission independently
Apply the new Workshop map files and obtain the mission package that matches that release. A mission update may arrive in a folder named empty.Banov_UPDATED. That name is an intermediate workspace, not automatically the active mission. Compare its XML with your current empty.banov, merge the changes you need, and switch the active folder only after checking the result. Keep template="empty.banov" unless you intentionally rename the active mission folder and update the configuration to match.
Expect compatibility work after DayZ patches
A DayZ game update can break Banov before the map developer publishes a compatible release. When this happens, check for a Banov update and read the hosting provider’s or map author’s compatibility notes before changing unrelated server settings. Rolling back to the last known-compatible map and mission backup may be safer than repeatedly modifying configuration files.

Troubleshooting Banov startup and connection problems
The server starts on the wrong world
Verify both sides of the reference:
- In
serverDZ.cfg, confirm the line is exactlytemplate="empty.banov";. - In the mission directory, confirm the folder is exactly
empty.banov. - Check that the folder is not nested one level too deeply and that the server is using the mission directory you edited.
- Restart after correcting the path and read the log for the mission it actually selected.
Signature, key, or client-verification errors
- Confirm
BANOV.bikeyis in the server’skeysdirectory, not only in the mod folder. - Confirm the server launch list contains the intended Banov mod.
- Have the client update or reinstall its Banov Workshop content so it matches the server’s release.
- Remove stale duplicate map folders that could cause the server or launcher to load a different build.
The server crashes after another mod is added
Some Workshop mods are incompatible with Banov and can cause crashes or startup failures. Remove the newly added mods, start Banov by itself, and then re-add mods one at a time. After each addition, let the server complete startup and perform a client connection test. This isolates the incompatible package instead of leaving several simultaneous changes to diagnose.

Read the exact file name, line, and element reported by the parser. Compare that mission file with the current Banov package and with your backup of the last working version. Community documentation has reported an events.xml Sedan02 parsing problem and suggested removing the offending event line, but that is version-specific community guidance. Validate the line against the current Banov files before deleting it, and keep a backup so you can restore the original if the diagnosis is wrong.
The server breaks after a DayZ update
First check whether Banov has a compatibility update. Review the map author’s and host’s notes, then compare the updated mission and Workshop files with your backup. Do not assume a change to an unrelated launch parameter will repair a map that has not yet been updated for the new DayZ version.
Players cannot see loot or persistence is abnormal
After confirming the correct world, inspect the mission XML for incomplete merges or parse warnings. Restore the last known-good mission if a recent update replaced custom economy files, then reapply changes gradually. Test a fresh spawn and a reconnect before reintroducing every custom edit.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
The choice is mainly about control and maintenance rather than a different Banov installation requirement. Both approaches still depend on the same map, mission, key, and client compatibility.

If you want to merge mission XML frequently or diagnose incompatible mods at file level, direct server access is the more flexible option. If you prefer a Mod Manager and do not want to maintain the server software and update process, a managed panel reduces routine administration but does not eliminate compatibility checks.
Safe operating routine after Banov is live
- Keep a copy of the currently working
empty.banovmission and configuration. - Record the Banov Workshop version and DayZ server version whenever you make a change.
- Change one category at a time: map update, mission update, XML edit, or additional mod.
- Start the server and read the log after each change.
- Join with a matching client and test spawning, loot, and persistence.
- If the change fails, restore the last known-good backup instead of stacking more edits on top of an uncertain state.
This process keeps the two most common causes of Banov downtime—mod incompatibility and mission-file drift—separate and recoverable.
