The safe way to play Super Mario Galaxy on Android is to install the official Android build of the independent Dolphin emulator, use a game dump made from a disc you legitimately own (where your local law permits), and configure Wii Remote pointer and motion inputs before launching the game. Do not download a ROM, ISO, RVZ, or “preloaded” package from a file-sharing or mirror site: Nintendo identifies downloading pirate copies as illegal.

What you need before installing

Galaxy was designed for a Wii Remote and Nunchuk, not a conventional touchscreen game. It uses ordinary buttons, a pointing device and motion-style actions. A phone can emulate those inputs, but the quality of the result depends on the Android device, its sensors, the controller you use and the Dolphin build.

  • A 64-bit Android phone or tablet. Dolphin’s Android build requires a 64-bit device. Keep Android itself current and install available system updates before troubleshooting emulator behavior.
  • Free storage for your legally obtained game dump. Leave additional space for Dolphin’s app data and any save files. The exact amount needed depends on the dump format and your device.
  • Dolphin from its official website. The download page separates stable releases from development builds. A stable release is the safer starting point for a general setup because development builds receive less testing.
  • Your own game data. Dolphin’s FAQ explains that it is not affiliated with Nintendo and discusses making a dump from a legitimately owned disc. The legal method for creating or using a dump varies by country, so check the law where you live.
  • An input plan. You can begin with touch controls, use a Bluetooth gamepad for Android, or configure a real Wii Remote setup if you already have compatible hardware.

Do not assume that a powerful-looking phone guarantees perfect emulation. Android graphics drivers, thermal limits, operating-system versions and Dolphin revisions all affect results, and there is no single frame-rate or compatibility figure that applies to every device.

Why the ROM-download shortcut is unsafe and unlawful

Nintendo Support states: “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.” That warning applies to peer-to-peer networks, file-hosting pages and third-party sites offering a ready-to-play copy. A site that bundles Dolphin with a game file is not an official distribution channel.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Dolphin itself is legitimate emulator software, but the emulator does not give you permission to obtain copyrighted game data. Dolphin’s FAQ also states: “Dolphin is not affiliated with Nintendo in any way.” Treat those as two separate questions:

  • Software source: get Dolphin from Dolphin’s official download page, not a modified APK mirror.
  • Game source: use a dump made through a lawful ownership and dumping route permitted by your local law. Do not follow links promising a “Galaxy ISO,” “RVZ download,” or a preloaded Android package.

Keep the original dump unchanged. If a copy later fails an integrity check or stops appearing in Dolphin, the untouched original gives you a known-good source to verify again rather than forcing you to search for another download.

Install Dolphin on Android

  1. Open Dolphin’s official download page. Select the Android section and review the available channels. Choose the current stable release unless you have a specific reason to test a development build.
  2. Download the Android APK from that page. Avoid APK mirrors, “mod” releases and packages advertised with included ROMs. A package that asks for unrelated permissions or changes Dolphin’s name is a reason to stop.
  3. Install the APK. Android may ask you to allow installation from the browser or file manager you used. Grant that one-time permission only if you trust the official file, then return to Android settings and disable the source permission afterward if your version provides that control.
  4. Launch Dolphin and grant file access only when requested. Use the Android file picker to choose the directory that contains your game dump. Dolphin should not need access to unrelated personal folders for this task.
  5. Update deliberately. If a development build causes a new problem, return to a current stable release and test there. Keep a copy of your controller profile before changing builds so you can restore your working mapping.

The exact wording of Android permission dialogs differs by Android version and manufacturer. The safe principle is consistent: use the official APK and select only the game directory Dolphin needs.

Put your game dump where Dolphin can find it

Create a dedicated game folder

Make one folder for your legally obtained Dolphin games, such as a directory under your device’s shared storage. A dedicated folder makes permissions easier to understand and prevents Dolphin from scanning photographs, downloads and documents. If you use an SD card, choose a location Android allows Dolphin to read reliably.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Select that folder in Dolphin

  1. Open Dolphin’s game list.
  2. Choose the option to add or select a game directory.
  3. Navigate through Android’s file picker to the folder containing your dump.
  4. Confirm the folder and allow Dolphin to scan it.
  5. Wait for the game list to refresh, then select your own Super Mario Galaxy entry.

Use the dump format supported by the Dolphin version you installed. An ISO or RVZ should be added only when that build recognizes it; the extension alone does not prove that a file is valid. Do not rename a damaged file to make it appear supported, and do not solve a missing-game problem by downloading another copy.

If the game does not appear

  • Reopen Dolphin’s game-directory picker and confirm that you selected the folder containing the file, not its parent or a shortcut.
  • Check Android’s file permission for that directory. If you moved the file, Dolphin may still be pointing to the old location.
  • Confirm that the dump is complete and in a format supported by your installed build.
  • Keep the original dump untouched and rescan after correcting the path or permission.

Understand Galaxy’s control requirements

The game’s manual describes actions that explain why a basic touchscreen layout can feel incomplete:

  • Point at Star Bits to collect them.
  • Point at an enemy and press A to stop it.
  • Point at Mario and press A to make him jump.
  • Press B to shoot.
  • Co-Star mode also relies on pointing plus A and B actions.

Movement therefore needs more than a left stick. Your layout should provide A, B, the Nunchuk stick and a usable pointer. Motion actions may require an accelerometer or gyroscope source, depending on the build and controller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure Dolphin’s Wii Remote controls

  1. Open Wii input settings. In Dolphin, open the controller or input configuration screen and select an Emulated Wii Remote for the player slot you will use.
  2. Map A and B first. Put A and B on large, easy-to-reach buttons. These are the two actions the game manual repeatedly associates with pointer interactions and shooting.
  3. Add the Nunchuk extension. Enable the Nunchuk in the emulated Wii Remote configuration and map its stick to your left analog stick or a clear touch-stick region. This controls Mario’s movement.
  4. Choose a pointer source. Dolphin’s controller guide supports pointer settings and alternate motion sources. Map the pointer to a touch region, a controller’s right stick or another input your device exposes. Adjust the pointer area so it does not cover A, B or the movement stick.
  5. Map required motion actions. If your selected source provides shake or other Wii Remote-style motion, assign it in the motion section. On supported Android builds, the phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope can act as motion input.
  6. Test in a game or controller test screen. Move the pointer across the whole display, press A and B, walk with the Nunchuk stick and perform a gentle shake. Fix one control at a time instead of changing every binding at once.
  7. Save a game-specific profile. Store the mapping under a profile name associated with Galaxy. This lets you experiment with touch or gamepad layouts without losing the working configuration used by another title.

Dolphin’s exact labels and screen arrangement can change between stable and development builds, but the concepts remain the same: emulated Wii Remote, extension, pointer, motion source and profile.

Choose between touch, a Bluetooth gamepad and a Wii Remote

There is no universal performance ranking for these options across Android devices. The comparison below describes practical trade-offs, not a measured frame-rate result.

Setup Pointer precision Motion fidelity Setup complexity Portability Battery needs Risk of dropping the phone
Touch controls Depends on the size and calibration of the touch region Depends on Android sensor support and mapping Highest: several virtual controls must fit without blocking the screen Highest because no accessory is required Phone battery only Higher if you tilt or shake the phone while holding it
Bluetooth gamepad for Android A right stick can provide a steadier pointer than a small touch region Varies by controller; many pads do not reproduce every Wii Remote motion action Medium: pair the pad, then map buttons, sticks and any available motion source Medium because you carry an additional device Phone and controller batteries Lower because the phone can remain still
Real Wii Remote setup Closest to the original pointing arrangement when the hardware and adapter configuration work Closest to original Wii Remote motion behavior Highest: pairing, extension and Android compatibility require more hardware steps Lower because the remote and related accessories travel with you Remote batteries or rechargeable cells plus the phone Lower because the remote is separate from the phone

For most Android users, a Bluetooth gamepad for Android is the clearest physical-accessory option: physical buttons and a right stick make A, B, movement and pointer mapping easier to control. It is not a guarantee that every motion action will work; controller capabilities and Dolphin’s available input sources differ.

Make pointer aiming reliable

Touch pointer

Assign pointer movement to a dedicated touch region rather than the entire screen if the layout allows it. A confined region gives you a repeatable place to aim, while an oversized region can make it difficult to press A or B without moving the pointer accidentally. Start with moderate sensitivity, then adjust it after testing Star Bits and an enemy target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Right-stick pointer

With a Bluetooth gamepad, map the right stick to the pointer and the left stick to the Nunchuk. Keep A and B on face buttons that you can press without releasing either stick. If the pointer moves too slowly or quickly, change Dolphin’s pointer sensitivity or dead-zone settings and save the revised profile.

Sensor-based pointer or motion

On supported Android builds, the accelerometer and gyroscope can supply Wii Remote-style motion input. Hold the phone securely, use gentle movements and consider a case or wrist strap. A phone is less robust than a Wii Remote, so avoid vigorous shaking over a hard floor or near other people.

If the pointer drifts, recalibrate the sensor or remap the pointer source in Wii input settings, then save the profile again. Drift can come from the phone’s sensor orientation, a controller dead zone or an over-sensitive mapping; changing the source is often faster than repeatedly forcing the same calibration.

Configure and test motion actions

  1. Verify that Android motion sensors are enabled and available to Dolphin.
  2. In the emulated Wii Remote settings, select the phone sensor or physical-controller motion source exposed by your build.
  3. Assign the required shake or tilt action and leave unrelated motion bindings untouched until the basic action works.
  4. Test with a gentle movement while the phone is secure. If no input registers, check the selected source and Android sensor permission before changing game settings.
  5. If sensor aiming remains uncomfortable, use a physical controller whose sticks and motion features Dolphin can map, accepting that behavior varies by controller.

Some Bluetooth pads provide buttons and sticks but no motion sensors. In that case they can improve pointer control while still requiring an alternative motion source for actions that depend on shaking or tilting.

Improve performance without making unsafe assumptions

Performance is device- and driver-dependent, so do not treat a particular resolution, frame rate or graphics setting as universal. Start with a stable Dolphin release and change one setting at a time.

Apply even pressure for a few seconds to allow the suction cup to adhere properly. To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.
  • Close background apps. Freeing memory and reducing competing CPU activity can help on phones that are close to their thermal or resource limits.
  • Lower internal resolution. If rendering is slow, reduce Dolphin’s internal resolution before changing several unrelated options. Lower resolution reduces the graphics workload but makes the image less sharp.
  • Watch for heat. A phone may run well briefly and slow after sustained play as it reaches a thermal limit. Remove an insulating case during testing only if the phone remains safe to hold.
  • Compare stable and development builds cautiously. Development builds may contain fixes, but they are less tested. If a development build introduces crashes, missing input or graphics problems, test the current stable release.
  • Keep graphics changes reversible. Note the original setting or use Dolphin’s profile options so you can return to a known configuration.

These steps can reduce load, but they cannot turn an incompatible device into a guaranteed smooth system. Device model, Android version, graphics driver and Dolphin revision all matter.

Troubleshoot common failures

Dolphin installs but will not open

Confirm that the phone is a 64-bit Android device and that Android is fully updated. Reinstall only the APK obtained from Dolphin’s official source. If the problem began after switching to a development build, test the stable release instead.

The game list is empty

Check the selected directory, Android file permission and dump format. Reopen the game-directory picker and choose the folder that actually contains your file. Do not download a replacement ROM as a troubleshooting step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The pointer drifts or will not reach the edges

Recalibrate the phone or controller, inspect the pointer source and dead zone, then remap it in Wii input settings. Save the corrected profile. A right-stick mapping may be steadier than a small touch region; a different sensor orientation may be necessary on a phone.

A, B or movement works but pointing does not

Confirm that the emulated Wii Remote is selected, the Nunchuk extension is enabled where needed, and a pointer source is assigned. Test the pointer independently before changing game graphics settings.

Motion actions do nothing

Verify that Android sensor input is enabled and mapped in Dolphin. If the phone exposes no usable sensor data, try a physical controller with a suitable motion or alternate-input mapping. A standard gamepad’s buttons and sticks alone may not reproduce every Wii Remote action.

Gameplay is slow or stutters

Use a stable Dolphin release, close background apps and lower internal resolution. Retest after each change and allow the phone to cool. There is no reliable universal frame-rate promise because Android hardware and drivers differ substantially.

Final safety checklist

  • Download Dolphin only from its official website.
  • Use a stable Android build first; treat development builds as less-tested alternatives.
  • Use game data obtained through a legitimate ownership and dumping route allowed by local law.
  • Never download a third-party ROM, ISO, RVZ or “preloaded” package.
  • Grant Dolphin access only to the game directory Android asks you to select.
  • Keep the original dump untouched and use a dedicated folder.
  • Map A, B, the Nunchuk stick and a pointer before judging whether the game controls correctly.
  • Use gentle sensor movements and secure the phone when motion input is enabled.
  • Save a game-specific controller profile after calibration.
