On PC, install DayZ Workshop mods by opening the game’s Steam Workshop page, selecting Subscribe for each required item, waiting for Steam to finish downloading, and then starting DayZ through Steam. Use the official DayZ launcher to review the subscribed collection and enable the mods required for your session or community server.
You normally do not need to copy files into an @ folder or install DayZ Tools just to play Workshop content. The important part is matching your enabled client collection to the server’s current mod list and dependencies.
What you need before installing
This procedure applies to the regular Windows PC version of DayZ distributed through Steam. Have the following ready:
- An active Steam installation and a DayZ license in your Steam library.
- A stable connection with enough disk space for the Workshop items you intend to use. Large maps, terrain packs and collections can take substantially longer than a small equipment mod.
- The name or address of the community server you plan to join, if you are installing mods for multiplayer. The server determines which collection is valid; subscribing to random items first often creates an unnecessary troubleshooting job.
- Steam running while Workshop content is being downloaded. A subscription is an instruction to obtain an item, not proof that the item is already present and usable.
DayZ’s Workshop catalog contains many kinds of content. The browse page displayed 111,715 entries in a Steam Community crawl in 2026, but that number changes as items are published, hidden or removed. Treat it as a snapshot rather than a fixed specification.

Install a DayZ Workshop mod through Steam
- Open the DayZ Workshop. In the Steam client, open your Library, select DayZ, and use the game’s Workshop link. You can also reach the Workshop from DayZ’s Steam store area.
- Open the item’s detail page. Read the current description rather than subscribing solely from a thumbnail. Look for the intended map or server, required dependencies, supported game context and any notes from the author about updates.
- Select Subscribe. Steam adds the item to your Workshop subscriptions. Steam’s Workshop guidance says that, in most cases, subscribed content is available the next time the game starts.
- Wait for the download to finish. Watch Steam’s Downloads view and allow the DayZ Workshop job to complete. Do not launch on the assumption that the button click downloaded everything immediately. A paused, queued or interrupted job leaves the item subscribed but unavailable or incomplete.
- Start DayZ through Steam. Starting the game this way lets the official launcher see the Steam-managed Workshop collection. If Steam is still processing an update, let it finish before continuing.
- Open the launcher’s mod view. DayZ’s official Steam description says that mods can be managed directly from the game launcher. Review the subscribed items shown there and identify which are available to load.
- Enable only the collection you need. Turn on the mods required for your offline session or the target server. If a mod has a dependency, include that dependency as well; a subscription alone does not mean every related item is enabled in the current launch profile.
- Launch after the launcher is ready. If the required items appear unavailable, still downloading or outdated, stop and resolve that state before attempting to connect.
This is the normal client workflow: Steam handles acquisition and updates, while the DayZ launcher presents the collection you can load.
Use the official launcher to select a playable collection
The launcher is the point where you turn subscriptions into a launch selection. A useful mental model is that Steam owns the downloaded Workshop items, while the DayZ launcher decides which of those items participate in this run.

Review what is installed
After DayZ starts, inspect the launcher’s subscribed or available mod list. Check names carefully: similarly named items can belong to different maps, versions or projects. If a newly subscribed item is absent, return to Steam’s Downloads view before changing files manually.
Enable a coherent set
For a single-player or local test, enable the items you deliberately want to use. For multiplayer, use the server’s required list as the authority. A collection that contains a weapon or cosmetic mod but omits the framework or dependency it requires can fail even though the visible item appears subscribed.
Keep the launch profile understandable
When diagnosing a problem, avoid enabling a large unrelated collection. Start with the server’s required items, confirm that the connection works, and add optional content one item at a time. This makes it possible to identify which subscription or update introduced a conflict.
Install the collection required by a community server
Community servers control their own mod requirements. DayZ supports community-run servers, but the fact that a server exists does not mean every Workshop item is compatible with it. Identify the target server first, then build your client collection around that server’s current requirements.
- Choose the exact server. Record its displayed name and, where provided, its address, map and version information. Two servers can use similar names while requiring different collections.
- Read the server’s instructions. Use the server listing, its current description or its administrator-provided mod list. Treat an old third-party list as suspect if the launcher reports a different requirement.
- Open each required Workshop item. Confirm the item’s present description, dependencies, supported map or server context and latest update notes. DayZ Workshop categories include Animation, Character, Economy, Environment, Equipment, Mechanics, Sound, Props, Terrain, Vehicle, Weapon and Dependency, which can help you distinguish a core dependency from optional content.
- Subscribe to every required item and dependency. Select Subscribe on each relevant Workshop page. If an item points to another required item, subscribe to that one too.
- Wait for all downloads and updates. Steam may queue several items. Check that the queue has completed rather than assuming the first finished download means the whole collection is ready.
- Launch DayZ and compare lists. In the official launcher, verify that every required item is available and enabled. Remove accidental extras from the active selection while testing.
- Connect only after the collection matches. If the server rejects the connection, record the exact missing, outdated or incompatible item named by the message and troubleshoot that item instead of reinstalling the entire game.
Some servers publish a launcher-accessible collection or another server-driven setup. Use that only as a way to discover the server’s required Workshop items; Steam still needs to complete the actual downloads, and the DayZ launcher remains the supported client launch point.
Understand dependencies and compatibility
A successful subscription answers only “has Steam been asked to obtain this item?” It does not answer “can this item run on every server?” Compatibility depends on the mod’s current files, its dependencies, the server’s configuration and the map or game context for which it was built.

What to check on a Workshop page
- Required dependencies: frameworks, libraries or shared assets that must also be subscribed and enabled.
- Supported context: a map, terrain, server type or game mode named by the author.
- Update status: a recent change may require the server administrator to update the server before clients can connect.
- Load instructions: author notes can specify an order, companion item or known limitation.
- Scope: an item listed as a dependency is not necessarily content you will see directly in game; it may provide code or shared assets for another mod.
Why a subscribed mod can still be unusable
Workshop items can change after you subscribe. An author may add a dependency, replace files or publish an update that a server has not adopted. Conversely, a server may change its collection while your local copy remains old until Steam downloads the update. Always compare the current Workshop description and the server’s current requirements when the launcher reports a mismatch.
Do you need to copy files into an @ folder?
For ordinary client play, no manual @-folder copying is required by the documented Steam Workshop workflow. Subscribe through Steam, allow Steam to download the item, and use the DayZ launcher to manage the collection. Manually moving or renaming Workshop files can make Steam’s update state and the launcher’s view disagree, creating harder-to-diagnose problems.

If an administrator gives you a specific deployment procedure, follow that server’s instructions rather than modifying your client at random.
DayZ Tools is separate from client mod installation
DayZ Tools is an official Steam package with a Tools Launcher for the tool suite. It serves development and server workflows. You do not need DayZ Tools merely to subscribe to Workshop mods or load them through the normal DayZ client launcher.

Install or use the tools only when you are creating, packaging, testing or administering content and the relevant documentation requires them. Keeping that distinction clear prevents a common mistake: installing a development package in an attempt to fix a client that simply has an incomplete Steam download.
Keep Workshop mods updated and remove unwanted items
Allow normal Steam updates
Steam can update subscribed Workshop items when authors publish changes. Before a scheduled server session, open Steam’s Downloads view and make sure pending DayZ Workshop updates have completed. Starting while an update is queued can leave the client on a different revision from the server.
Unsubscribe safely
To stop receiving an item, open its Workshop page and select Unsubscribe. Then let Steam finish any resulting file operation before launching DayZ again. If the item remains visible in a launcher list temporarily, restart Steam and DayZ so both applications refresh their state.
Do not remove a dependency casually
Before unsubscribing, check whether another enabled item requires it. Removing a shared dependency can break several otherwise unrelated mods. If you are cleaning up a large collection, remove optional items first and test the required server set after each meaningful change.

Troubleshoot missing, outdated or incompatible mods
Use the symptom that best matches what you see. The exact repair depends on the item and its author; there is no single reinstall action that fixes every Workshop problem.

When to stop changing local files
If the error identifies a server-side mismatch, repeated local reinstalls may not help. A server can require a particular revision, remove an item or change dependencies. Capture the exact message, the server name and the affected Workshop item, then ask the server administrator or consult official DayZ support. Avoid deleting the entire DayZ installation unless a documented support instruction specifically calls for it.

The practical choice for a player is therefore straightforward: use Steam Workshop for acquisition and the DayZ launcher for selection. Use server instructions to determine which items belong in that selection, and reserve manual tools or file operations for tasks that explicitly require them.
A repeatable pre-session checklist
- Confirm the exact community server or play session.
- Open every required Workshop item and read its current dependencies and context.
- Subscribe to all required items, including dependencies.
- Wait until Steam’s Downloads view shows the DayZ Workshop work is complete.
- Start DayZ through Steam and inspect the launcher’s available collection.
- Enable the server-required items and disable unrelated extras while testing.
- Launch only when the required content is available and current.
- If an error appears, write down the named item and follow the matching troubleshooting branch instead of changing several variables at once.
What to remember
DayZ Workshop installation is intentionally a two-part process. Steam obtains and updates the files when you subscribe; the official DayZ launcher manages which subscribed files are loaded. Waiting for downloads, checking dependencies and matching the server’s current collection prevent most failures. DayZ Tools and manual @-folder copying are outside the ordinary client workflow.
