Install software on Kubernetes with Helm 3 by installing the Helm client, selecting the correct kubectl context, adding a chart repository, inspecting and rendering the chart, then running helm install RELEASE CHART with reviewed values. Helm stores each deployment as a release, so you can inspect it, upgrade it, or roll it back without manually applying every generated manifest.
What Helm 3 installs and why it matters
Helm is a client-side package manager for Kubernetes. A Helm chart is a versioned package containing chart metadata, default configuration values, and templates that render into Kubernetes manifest files. Helm sends those rendered resources to the Kubernetes API and records the deployment as a named release.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Helm 3 does not require the Tiller server used by Helm 2. The helm client uses your Kubernetes credentials and current context, just as kubectl does. That makes the active kubeconfig context, namespace, and permissions part of every installation decision.
A successful helm install only means that Helm accepted the release and created (or began creating) the requested resources. It does not prove that pods are ready, services are reachable, storage mounted, ingress routes work, or the application itself is healthy. Those checks belong in the installation procedure.

Prerequisites before installing a chart
- A Helm 3 client installed on the workstation or automation runner.
kubectlconfigured with credentials for the intended Kubernetes cluster.- Permission to create the namespace and resources required by the chart.
- A chosen chart source and a chart version that is compatible with your Kubernetes version.
- A reviewed values file or a short list of deliberate
--setoverrides.
Install and verify the Helm client
The official Helm installer documents downloading and unpacking a binary as well as package-manager installations through Homebrew, Chocolatey, Winget, Scoop, Snap, and Flox. After installation, make sure the directory containing helm is on your PATH, then verify the client:
helm version
The command should print the installed Helm version. If your shell reports that helm cannot be found, fix the PATH or reopen the terminal before continuing. Keep the client version consistent across CI and operator workstations when you need reproducible behavior.
Confirm the cluster context
Check the destination before adding repositories or installing anything:
kubectl config current-context
kubectl cluster-info
Compare the context name and cluster endpoints with the environment you intend to change. A valid context can still point to production, so do not treat a successful command as proof that the target is safe.
Select a namespace deliberately
Use a dedicated namespace when the chart is an application rather than a cluster-wide platform component:
kubectl create namespace demo
If the namespace already exists, creation reports that fact and you can continue. Pass --namespace demo consistently to repository-independent Helm commands. Helm can create it during installation with --create-namespace, but explicitly deciding the namespace first helps avoid accidental installs into default.
Add and refresh a Helm chart repository
A repository is an index of packaged charts and their metadata. Add a repository once on a workstation, then refresh its local index before choosing a version:
helm repo add bitnami https://charts.bitnami.com/bitnami
helm repo update
helm search repo bitnami
The repository alias is local to your Helm configuration; in this example it is bitnami. helm repo update downloads current index metadata, so run it before selecting a chart or version rather than relying on a stale local list. The repository URL above is the endpoint used by this example; repositories can change ownership, chart availability, or retention policies, so check the publisher’s current documentation.

For broader discovery, helm search hub searches the public chart catalog and Artifact Hub. Discovery results are not a substitute for reviewing a chart’s source, release notes, image provenance, security defaults, and compatibility requirements.
Inspect the chart before changing the cluster
Start by reading the chart metadata and defaults:
helm show chart bitnami/nginx
helm show values bitnami/nginx > values.yaml
The chart metadata identifies the chart version and application version, which are separate values. The generated values.yaml file gives you the complete set of configurable defaults for that chart version. Save a reviewed copy in version control when the configuration is part of an environment’s deployment process.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Before installation, inspect at least these areas:
- Kubernetes compatibility: look for the chart’s Kubernetes version constraints and any APIs that your cluster no longer supports.
- Images: identify image repositories, tags, pull policies, and private-registry credentials.
- Exposure: determine whether the defaults create a ClusterIP, NodePort, LoadBalancer, ingress, or another service path.
- Persistence: check whether a persistent volume claim is created, which storage class is requested, and what happens on uninstall.
- Security: review service accounts, pod security settings, Linux capabilities, security contexts, and network policies.
- CRDs: find out whether the chart installs or expects custom resource definitions and how upgrades handle them.
- Resources and probes: review CPU and memory requests, limits, liveness probes, and readiness probes.
Pin a chart version for repeatable deployments. Without --version, Helm may select the newest version available in the refreshed repository index, and that version can change independently of your application configuration.
Render and validate manifests before installation
Use three complementary checks before creating resources:
helm lint ./my-chart
helm template my-nginx bitnami/nginx --namespace demo --values values.yaml
helm install my-nginx bitnami/nginx --namespace demo --values values.yaml --dry-run --debug
Check a local chart with helm lint
helm lint checks a chart package or directory for common structural and template problems. A clean lint result does not prove that your cluster has sufficient permissions, that an image exists, or that the application will become ready; it is an early quality check.
Render with helm template
helm template renders the chart locally and prints Kubernetes YAML without contacting the cluster. Review names, namespaces, labels, image references, ports, probes, volume claims, and security settings. You can redirect the output to a file for code review or feed it into separate policy and schema checks.
Recommended Free Tools
Exercise the install path with a dry run
helm install --dry-run --debug uses Helm’s installation rendering path but does not create resources. The debug output helps expose merged values and template errors. Treat rendered output as potentially sensitive: charts can include connection strings, passwords, or other values that should not be pasted into public logs.
If a publisher supplies a provenance file for a signed chart package, helm verify can check that package before installation. Verification depends on the publisher’s signing and provenance process; it is not available for every chart source.

Install software with helm install
The general syntax is:
helm install RELEASE CHART [flags]
RELEASE is the name Helm uses for this specific deployment. CHART identifies the package and can come from several source types:
| Chart source | Example | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Repository reference | bitnami/nginx |
Install a chart indexed by a configured repository alias. |
| Local directory | ./my-chart |
Develop or deploy a chart stored in a checked-out directory. |
| Packaged chart | ./my-chart-1.2.3.tgz |
Install a reviewed, versioned archive. |
| Full URL | A direct URL to a chart archive | Install an archive hosted outside a configured repository. |
| OCI reference | oci://registry.example.com/charts/nginx |
Use an OCI registry that stores chart artifacts. |
Use a values file for reviewable configuration
A normal repository installation with a pinned chart version looks like this:
helm install my-nginx bitnami/nginx
--namespace demo --create-namespace
--values values.yaml
--version <pinned-chart-version>
--wait --timeout 10m
--values (also written -f) loads your configuration on top of the chart defaults. Keep substantial, security-sensitive, or reviewable settings in a file so they can be code-reviewed and reproduced. If you supply multiple values files, Helm merges them in the order supplied; later files override earlier ones.
Use --set for small overrides
For a narrowly scoped change, pass a key and value directly:
helm install my-nginx bitnami/nginx
--namespace demo
--set service.type=ClusterIP
Use quoting when a value contains spaces, commas, shell metacharacters, or a string that could be interpreted as a number or boolean. For nested objects and arrays, a values file is usually clearer and less error-prone than a long command line. Do not place secrets in shell history or CI logs; use the chart’s documented secret mechanism and your platform’s secret-management controls.
Understand waiting, timeouts, and atomic behavior
--wait tells Helm to wait for the chart’s applicable resources to reach their readiness conditions. --timeout 10m sets the maximum wait duration in this example; choose a value that matches image-pull time, migrations, and startup behavior rather than copying it blindly.
--atomic applies rollback-on-failure behavior for the operation according to Helm’s documented semantics. Use it when your deployment policy requires automatic cleanup or rollback after a failed install or upgrade, but still investigate the underlying cause. An automatic rollback does not repair an application migration that already changed external data.
Verify the release and the Kubernetes objects
After installation, inspect both Helm’s release record and the objects in the cluster:

helm list --namespace demo
helm status my-nginx --namespace demo
helm get values my-nginx --namespace demo
helm get manifest my-nginx --namespace demo
kubectl get all --namespace demo
helm list shows releases in the selected namespace. helm status reports the release state and any chart-provided notes. helm get values shows the values associated with the release, while helm get manifest prints the manifests Helm stored for it.
Continue beyond those commands:
- Inspect pod readiness and restart counts with
kubectl get pods -n demo. - Read warning events with
kubectl get events -n demo --sort-by=.lastTimestamp. - Check service endpoints and ingress addresses before testing reachability.
- Review container logs for startup failures, configuration errors, and failed migrations.
- Confirm that persistent volume claims are bound and that the selected storage class is usable.
- Run
helm test my-nginx --namespace demowhen the chart supplies test resources.
Readiness is an application and cluster outcome, not a guarantee conveyed by Helm’s successful command exit alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUpgrade an existing release safely
Use helm upgrade with the same release name, namespace, and intended values source. Pin the new chart version explicitly:
helm upgrade my-nginx bitnami/nginx
--namespace demo
--values values.yaml
--version <new-chart-version>
--install --atomic
--install makes the command create the release if it does not already exist, which is useful in idempotent deployment scripts. Before applying an upgrade, render the proposed version and review its release notes, schema changes, CRD behavior, image changes, and any required value migrations. Reusing the same values source prevents an upgrade from silently reverting settings that were previously supplied on the command line.
After the upgrade, run the same release and workload checks used after installation. Pay particular attention to readiness, storage, service endpoints, and application logs during a rollout.
Inspect history and roll back a failed change
Helm records revisions for a release. List them with:
helm history my-nginx --namespace demo
Choose the revision that represents the last known-good configuration, then roll back:
helm rollback my-nginx <revision> --namespace demo --wait
A rollback returns the release to an earlier Helm revision and creates a new history entry. Verify pods, services, storage, events, and application behavior after the rollback; do not assume that a completed rollback means the service is healthy.

Rollback changes Kubernetes resources managed by the release. It cannot undo external side effects such as a database migration, a message already sent, or data written by the newer application. For stateful software, pair Helm rollback with an application-level recovery plan and tested backups.
Helm retains release history after an uninstall as well, which can support auditing and later review. Retention limits and chart-specific resources still need to be considered in your operational policy.

Remove a release and check what remains
Remove the named release with:
helm uninstall my-nginx --namespace demo
Then inspect the namespace and cluster-scoped resources. Uninstall behavior depends on the chart and its retention policies. Persistent volume claims, custom resource definitions, webhook configurations, and other cluster-scoped objects may intentionally remain or may be managed outside the release lifecycle. Delete remaining resources only after confirming ownership and data-retention requirements.
How to choose between charts for the same application
When multiple charts package the same application, compare the chart rather than judging only the application name. Use a written checklist:
- Maintenance and cadence: examine recent releases, issue response, and whether the chart tracks supported application versions.
- Kubernetes support: compare declared Kubernetes versions and API usage with your cluster upgrade plan.
- Image provenance: identify who builds the images, how tags are managed, and whether digests can be pinned.
- CRD lifecycle: determine whether CRDs install, upgrade, and remove safely and whether they are shared by other workloads.
- Security defaults: review service accounts, privileges, pod security contexts, network policies, and exposed services.
- Persistence and backup: understand storage classes, reclaim behavior, backup hooks, and restore documentation.
- Upgrade and rollback notes: look for breaking value changes, migration steps, and known rollback limitations.
- Package verification: check whether the publisher signs or otherwise verifies chart packages.
Record the chart version and application version separately in deployment metadata. A chart can update templates or defaults while the application version remains unchanged, and the reverse can also occur.
Troubleshoot common installation failures
Helm cannot connect or resources appear in the wrong cluster
Re-run kubectl config current-context and kubectl cluster-info. Check the KUBECONFIG environment variable, credentials, and namespace flags. A repository can be configured correctly while the Kubernetes context is wrong; repository configuration does not select the destination cluster.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The chart or version cannot be found
Run helm repo update, then search with helm search repo. Confirm the repository alias, chart name, and exact version. If the chart is a local directory, archive, URL, or OCI reference, verify the path or registry reference instead of searching repository indexes.
Template rendering fails
Run helm lint, then helm template with the same values files and namespace used by the intended install. Inspect indentation, data types, required values, and renamed keys between chart versions. Use --dry-run --debug to examine the merged configuration without creating resources.
Pods remain pending or never become ready
Use kubectl describe pod, inspect namespace events, and verify image-pull credentials, node capacity, taints, affinity rules, resource requests, storage claims, and readiness probes. A longer Helm timeout only helps when the workload is progressing; it does not fix a missing volume, invalid image, or unsatisfied scheduling rule.
An upgrade fails or changes more than expected
Inspect helm history, compare rendered manifests for the old and new chart versions, and confirm that the upgrade used the intended values file. Roll back to a known-good revision when appropriate, then address migrations or external side effects separately. Avoid repeatedly retrying an --atomic deployment without reading the events and application logs that explain the failure.

Helm 3 support status
As of the stated 2026 project dates, Helm 3 receives bug-fix support through July 8, 2026, and security-fix support through November 11, 2026. The Helm project identifies Helm 4 as the current stable release. Before standardizing a new platform on Helm 3, check the current support policy, client and chart compatibility, and the upgrade path for your automation. Existing Helm 3 estates may still require it for compatibility, but support dates should be part of the platform lifecycle decision.
