Install Purpur by downloading the build that matches your Minecraft version, installing the Java runtime required for that version, and starting the JAR from a dedicated server directory. On first launch, accept the EULA as instructed, then configure and test the server locally before opening it to other players.
Purpur is a drop-in replacement for Paper. It keeps Paper’s upstream features while adding configuration options and gameplay features; with an untouched purpur.yml, Purpur behaves like Paper.

What Purpur is and what you need
Purpur is server software for Minecraft: Java Edition. It is built as a Paper-compatible fork focused on configurability and additional gameplay features. You run it as a Java archive (JAR), just as you would run a Paper server.
Prepare these items before downloading:
- A Minecraft version you have chosen deliberately. The Purpur build, Java runtime, plugins and existing world must all be compatible with that version.
- A computer or hosted instance with enough CPU, memory and storage for the players, worlds and plugins you intend to run. There is no universal Purpur RAM requirement.
- Permission to install Java, create files and open the server’s listening port on the machine and network.
- Backups of any world or configuration you plan to migrate. Never replace a production JAR or copy a world into a new version without a recoverable backup.
Purpur itself is free server software, but the practical choice is between running it on your own computer and using a managed Minecraft host. Self-hosting gives you direct control of files and Java flags; managed hosting generally reduces networking and maintenance work but adds a provider cost and limits some system-level choices.

Choose the Minecraft version and Java version first
Do not begin by downloading a random Purpur JAR. Decide which Minecraft version your players and plugins will use, then select the matching Purpur build. Purpur documents a versioned download API whose latest-build pattern is:

Your Java runtime must also match the Minecraft release. PaperMC’s current requirements table lists these mappings:

The table is version guidance, not a guarantee that every operating system has the same Java package name. After installation, verify the runtime your terminal will use with java -version. If several Java versions are installed, configure your operating system or launch script so the intended one is selected.

Create a dedicated Purpur server folder
Make one directory exclusively for this server. Keep the Purpur JAR, server.properties, worlds, logs, plugin files, configuration and backups together. A short path that is easy to reach from a terminal avoids quoting and permission problems.
Use a stable JAR filename
Downloaded files often include the Minecraft version and Purpur build in their names. Rename the file to a stable name such as purpur.jar. Your start script can then remain unchanged when you upgrade. Record the original version and build in a text file or backup directory before replacing the JAR.
Keep versions isolated
If you operate more than one server, give each instance its own folder and JAR. Do not launch two servers from the same working directory: they would compete for the same worlds, logs and configuration files.
Download Purpur and launch it
- Select the target version. Confirm the Minecraft version, Java requirement and plugin support before downloading.
- Download the matching Purpur JAR. Use Purpur’s official downloads page or its documented API pattern. Save it in the dedicated folder and rename it to
purpur.jarif you want a stable script. - Open a terminal in that folder. The Java command must run with the Purpur JAR as the current directory’s file so generated paths, worlds and logs stay together.
- Start the server. A documented Paper-style command, adapted for Purpur, is:
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar purpur.jar --nogui - Read the first-run output. Purpur creates initial files and displays the instructions needed to complete setup. Stop the process cleanly if it asks you to change a generated setting, make that change, and start it again.
In this command, -Xms4G sets the initial Java heap and -Xmx4G sets the maximum heap. Four gigabytes is an example starting point, not a universal requirement. Choose heap size according to player count, world size, plugin load and total machine memory, and leave enough memory for the operating system and other services.
Windows launch file
Once the command works interactively, save the same command in a .bat file in the server folder. Launching the script from that folder keeps the working directory predictable and makes future upgrades less error-prone.

macOS or Linux launch script
Save the command in a shell script, make it executable, and run it from the Purpur directory. Keep the script under version control or in your backup set so the Java and heap choices are documented. The command itself remains the same; only the script wrapper differs.
Complete the EULA and first-run setup
On the first launch, the server generates its baseline files and an EULA prompt. Read the Minecraft EULA, then follow the generated instructions before starting the server again. The process will not proceed until the required EULA setting is completed.
After the second launch, allow the server to finish generating the world before stopping it. Use the console’s clean stop command rather than closing the terminal window or killing the Java process. An orderly stop flushes world data and reduces the chance of corruption.
Configure the server before inviting players
Start with conservative settings and change one category at a time. Keep a dated copy of every configuration change so you can identify which setting caused a problem.

Core Minecraft settings
server.properties: Set the server name, game mode, difficulty, world name, view distance, simulation distance and listening address or port as appropriate for your network.- Operator permissions: Grant operator status only to trusted accounts. Use the narrowest permissions your administration workflow supports.
- World settings: Confirm the seed, generation options and world folder before allowing players to build. A later version change can alter generation behavior, so preserve a backup first.
- Access controls: Configure the whitelist or equivalent protection if the server is private.
Purpur and Paper configuration
Purpur-specific options are stored in its configuration files, while inherited Paper settings live in the corresponding Paper configuration. Read the comments shipped with each file and change only settings you understand. Some options require a full restart before they take effect.

A clean stop and start is safer than /reload for plugin or server lifecycle changes. Reloading can leave plugin state, threads or resources in an inconsistent condition; restart instead and keep the pre-change files available for rollback.
Install plugins without creating compatibility problems
Purpur inherits Paper features by design. Its FAQ also states that Paper, Spigot and CraftBukkit plugins generally work on Purpur. Compatibility is not absolute: a plugin can fail when its author hard-codes checks for one server implementation or ignores Paper and its forks.
- Find the plugin’s supported Minecraft and server versions in its documentation.
- Download the release that matches your selected Minecraft version, rather than assuming the newest file is correct.
- Stop the server before copying the plugin JAR into the
pluginsdirectory. - Start the server and read the console for dependency, API or version errors.
- Test the plugin with a non-admin player or test world before enabling it on a live world.
- If a plugin breaks, remove or replace it while the server is stopped, then restore the configuration and world backup if necessary.
Install a small set first. Adding many plugins at once makes it difficult to identify which one caused a startup failure, performance change or gameplay conflict.
Test locally before exposing the server
Connect from the same computer or local network first. Confirm that the world loads, chunks generate, operators can administer the server, plugins behave as expected and the console remains free of recurring errors. This isolates server configuration problems from router and firewall problems.
LAN players
Players on the same local network connect using the host computer’s local address and the listening port configured in server.properties. The host’s operating-system firewall must allow the Java process or that port for the chosen network profile.

Internet players
Players outside your home or office network need more than a running Java process:
- Allow the listening port through the host firewall.
- Create a router port-forwarding rule from the public interface to the server computer’s local address.
- Give the server computer a stable local address, or update the forwarding rule when it changes.
- Provide players with a stable public address or DNS name. If your public address changes, use a DNS service or another update method you trust.
- Test from a network outside your LAN, such as a mobile connection. A test from inside the same router may succeed even when Internet forwarding is wrong.
Some networks use carrier-grade NAT or block inbound connections. In that case, traditional port forwarding may not work; a VPN-based approach or managed hosting can be an alternative. Do not publish your home address or administrative credentials in public chat.

There is no single best deployment model. Use the following criteria instead of choosing on price alone:

For a small private server, self-hosting is practical when you can manage the network and backups. Choose managed hosting when you value simpler public access and continuous availability more than operating-system control.
Back up and update Purpur safely
Update only during a planned maintenance window. A reliable sequence is:

- Copy every world folder,
server.properties, Purpur and Paper configuration, plugin JAR and plugin configuration, whitelist and operator files, and any scripts. - Label the backup with the Minecraft version, Purpur build and date. Keep at least one copy outside the server machine.
- Download the intended Purpur build for the same or deliberately upgraded Minecraft version.
- Replace the JAR while preserving the old JAR until the new build has been tested.
- Check each plugin’s compatibility notes and update or remove incompatible plugins before starting.
- Start the server, watch the console for migration or exception messages, and join with a test account.
- If the world or plugins misbehave, stop the server and restore the previous JAR and backup rather than repeatedly restarting a damaged instance.
Purpur’s versioned API makes it possible to select a specific Minecraft version and latest build reproducibly, but “latest” can still change over time. Record the exact build you deployed.

- Server properties, permissions and Purpur settings reviewed.
- Plugins tested for the exact Minecraft and Purpur release.
- Local connection tested before network exposure.
