RPCS3 uses two different kinds of installable files: the official PS3 system firmware file PS3UPDAT.PUP, and game-specific update packages with a .pkg extension. Install the firmware from File → Install Firmware. Install a title update from File → Install Packages/Raps/Edats, and use a package whose title and region ID match the game already installed.
Firmware and game updates are different
Installing firmware prepares the RPCS3 emulator with the PS3 operating-system software it needs. It does not install a game, add downloadable content, or update an individual title. The firmware file is named PS3UPDAT.PUP.
A game update is a separate package made for one title. It normally has a .pkg extension and can contain bug fixes, compatibility changes, or other title-specific updates. RPCS3 installs it through the package installer, not through the firmware command.

What you need before installing
An official firmware file
Obtain PS3UPDAT.PUP from Sony’s official support channel or from your own PS3. Do not use an unofficially modified firmware file or a download whose origin you cannot verify. RPCS3’s setup guidance specifically directs users to the official file.

A legally owned game dump
Firmware does not provide games. Add only game dumps made from discs or digital purchases that you own and are permitted to use. RPCS3’s setup guide uses File → Add Games for adding those dumps.
The correct title update package
For an update, identify the game’s title and region ID first. A package for a different regional release may install incorrectly, fail to appear, or create title-data problems. The safest approach is to use an update whose ID exactly corresponds to the installed release.
Enough storage and an accessible file
Keep the downloaded file in a location you can browse to from RPCS3. The emulator reads the file you select; it does not require the file to be placed in a special firmware or game folder beforehand. If your browser downloaded an archive, extract it first and select the actual .PUP or .pkg file.

A quick pre-install checklist
- Use the official
PS3UPDAT.PUPfor firmware. - Have the game already dumped from your own disc or digital purchase.
- Record the game’s title and region ID as shown in RPCS3.
- Keep the matching update package separate from unrelated regional packages.
- Know which menu performs each operation: firmware, package installation, and game adding are separate commands.
Install PS3 firmware in RPCS3
1. Download and verify the firmware
- Download the current official PS3 system-software file from Sony, or obtain the file from your own console.
- Confirm that the filename is
PS3UPDAT.PUP. A file ending in.pkg,.zip, or another extension is not the firmware installer. - If the download is compressed, extract it without renaming the resulting
.PUPfile.
Sony’s support page is the appropriate source for the official download. The page currently identifies PS3 system software version 4.93 and says, “This system software update improves system performance.” That version label describes Sony’s console software release; it is not a separate RPCS3 menu option or a requirement to copy files to a USB stick.
2. Open the firmware installer
- Start RPCS3.
- Open the File menu.
- Select Install Firmware.
- Browse to
PS3UPDAT.PUPand select it.
RPCS3 processes the firmware and installs the required system files. The operation is performed inside the emulator; you do not need to copy the file to a FAT32 USB drive for this workflow. The short RPCS3 setup instruction is simply to install it through File → Install Firmware.
3. Let the installation finish
Keep RPCS3 open until the installer reports completion. If the file is rejected, check the troubleshooting section below before trying a different source. Installing a second copy of the same file is not a substitute for resolving a bad, incomplete, or incorrectly selected file.
Firmware installation and game scanning are independent. A successful firmware installation may leave your game list empty until you add a game dump, and adding a game does not install firmware automatically.

Add your game to RPCS3
- In RPCS3, choose File → Add Games.
- Select the folder containing the legally owned game dump. For a disc-based dump, select the folder that contains the game’s expected files rather than an unrelated parent directory.
- Wait for RPCS3 to scan the folder and create the title entry.
- Read the title and region information shown for the game. Record the identifier before selecting an update package.
Adding a game and installing its update are separate actions. A game can appear in RPCS3 without a title update, and installing firmware alone will never make a game appear in the library.
Install a game update package
Where do I put the PS3 update PKG?
You do not need to place a game update in a particular RPCS3 directory. Leave the .pkg wherever it is easy to find, then select it from File > Install Packages/Raps/Edats. RPCS3’s built-in installer reads the package you choose. The same menu is used for PSN packages and related license files, so selecting the menu is not enough by itself; the package must still belong to the installed title.
1. Obtain the matching update
Use a .pkg update intended for the exact title and region of the game you added. Regional variants can have different identifiers even when the game has the same name. RPCS3 Quickstart guidance warns against mixing regions because incompatible title data can cause installation or launch problems.
2. Use the package installer
- Open RPCS3 and select File > Install Packages/Raps/Edats.
- Browse to the game-update
.pkgfile. - Select the package and allow RPCS3 to complete the installation.
- If you have more than one package for the same title, install them in the order specified by the package’s documentation. Do not select the firmware
.PUPfile in this dialog.
When several files are supplied for one update, preserve the order documented for that release instead of guessing. A firmware file and a title update are never interchangeable, even though both are downloaded files associated with a PS3.
3. Confirm that the update belongs to the installed title
After installation, compare the package’s title or region ID with the game entry in RPCS3. If the identifiers differ, remove the mismatched package rather than trying additional cross-region packages. A package can install successfully at the file level and still be wrong for the installed release.
Launch the game only after the installer finishes. If the title behaves exactly as before, that does not automatically mean the installer failed: some updates affect a specific issue or compatibility condition rather than adding a visible menu item. Use the exact title’s compatibility entry for title-specific notes.
Check compatibility and available updates for the exact game
RPCS3’s compatibility list changes as the emulator and title reports are updated. Search for the exact game entry, including its region, instead of assuming that an update available for one release applies to all releases.

- Check the title name and region ID shown by RPCS3 against the update package.
- Review the compatibility entry for notes about the game’s current behavior.
- Look for update information attached to that title when it is provided.
- Use the entry as a title-specific reference; another game, region, or release may have different requirements.
The compatibility list is not a guarantee that every title update exists or that every update behaves identically in every RPCS3 build. Interface wording can also change between builds, so a menu label that differs slightly from the labels above should be interpreted by function: firmware installation for the .PUP file, and package installation for the game’s .pkg.

Because entries and available update information change over time, check the list again when you change game regions, replace a dump, or move to a different RPCS3 build. Do not treat a report for a similarly named release as proof that your package is compatible.
The physical-PS3 update procedure is separate
Sony’s support instructions for updating an actual PS3 use removable storage. They should not be followed as a prerequisite for RPCS3.
- Format a USB drive as FAT32.
- Create the folders
PS3/UPDATEin that exact order. - Save the firmware as
PS3UPDAT.PUPinside theUPDATEfolder. - Connect the drive to the physical PS3.
- On the console, open Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media.
Sony currently lists PS3 system software version 4.93 on its support page and says, “This system software update improves system performance.” Sony also specifies at least 200 MB of free space on the physical console’s hard drive or removable storage for that system update. Those are console requirements, not RPCS3 requirements: RPCS3 takes the .PUP file through its own File → Install Firmware menu.
A USB drive is therefore optional for this article’s computer workflow. It becomes relevant only if you are separately updating a physical console. Sony also cautions physical-console users against system-update data from unofficial sources or methods, which is another reason to use the official file.

RPCS3 says the file is invalid
- Check that you selected
PS3UPDAT.PUP, not a compressed archive or a.pkggame update. - Download the file again from Sony or recreate it from your own console if the download was interrupted.
- Do not rename a game package to make it look like a firmware file; the contents, not just the extension, must be correct.
- Make sure the file is readable from the account running RPCS3 and that your security software has not altered or quarantined it.
You used the console USB instructions but RPCS3 still has no firmware
The FAT32 drive and PS3/UPDATE folders are for a physical PS3. RPCS3 does not scan that folder automatically. Return to RPCS3’s File → Install Firmware command and select the .PUP file directly.
The firmware menu is unavailable or behaves differently
Builds can revise menu placement and wording. Use the top-level File menu and look for the command that explicitly installs firmware. If the command is not present, confirm that you are running RPCS3 rather than a shortcut or a different frontend, and consult the documentation for that installed build.

The download has the wrong extension
Do not assume that adding “.PUP” to a filename repairs it. Extract an archive when necessary and select the actual firmware file. Likewise, do not place a title-update .pkg in the firmware dialog; return to the package installer.
Troubleshoot game-update installation
The package installer rejects the file
- Verify that the file is a complete
.pkgpackage and was not left inside a.zipor another archive. - Confirm that you selected Install Packages/Raps/Edats, not Install Firmware.
- Check the title and region ID against the game entry in RPCS3.
- If several regional packages are available, stop and identify the installed release before trying another one.
The package installs but the game does not change
Recheck the package’s title ID and region. A package made for a related release can be accepted by the installer while remaining unusable for the game you launched. Then consult the exact title’s compatibility entry for update notes; behavior is title-specific and can change as RPCS3 develops.

Do not continue installing packages from other regions. The Quickstart guidance warns that mixing regions can damage title data. Restore the game from a clean, legally owned dump or backup, then install only a package whose identifier matches that release.
You cannot find an update for the game
Not every title has update information listed, and an entry for one region does not establish that another region has the same package. Check the compatibility list for the exact title and region. If no matching package is listed, do not substitute a similarly named update from another release.

Do I need a FAT32 USB drive for RPCS3 firmware?
