Install a BeamMP server plugin by placing its Lua files in a dedicated folder under Resources/Server, then restarting the server and checking the console for errors. The dependable path is ResourceFolder/Server/<PluginName>, where ResourceFolder is the directory set in ServerConfig.toml (normally Resources). Put the plugin’s main .lua files directly in that folder; Lua files buried in subfolders are not loaded automatically.
What a BeamMP server plugin is
A BeamMP server plugin is a collection of Lua files that runs on the server. It can add or change server-side behavior without being installed into the game files of every player. BeamMP treats each folder inside Resources/Server that contains at least one Lua file as a plugin. The BeamMP Server Manual describes the arrangement this way: the Server subdirectory accepts folders, each containing at least one .lua file, and each folder is called a plugin.

This is different from a client mod. Client mods are ZIP files placed in Resources/Client and distributed to players. A plugin belongs in Resources/Server, not in the client directory and not beside the server executable.
Before you install anything
Install and initialize the server
Use the official BeamMP server setup procedure for your operating system. The setup documentation supports both Windows and Linux. Start the server once before copying a plugin. The first run creates the normal server configuration and resource layout, including ServerConfig.toml and the Resources directory.

Home hosting does not require a hosting fee, while the official setup guide characterizes VPS hosting as easier and more secure. That is a hosting choice rather than a plugin requirement: the folder procedure is the same once the server files are available.
Confirm the resource folder
Open ServerConfig.toml in the server’s main directory and find the ResourceFolder setting. The usual value points to a directory named Resources, but the setting is authoritative. If it points somewhere else, create or use the Server directory beneath that configured location.
Check the plugin’s target version
BeamMP Server 3.0.0 introduced drastic Lua plugin-system changes. A plugin written for an older server cannot be assumed to work unchanged on a current 3.x server. Before installation, check the plugin’s stated BeamMP server version and any migration notes. A correctly placed plugin can still fail if its Lua API expectations do not match the server version.
Where BeamMP plugins go
The required location is:
ResourceFolder/Server/<PluginName>/With the default resource directory, that becomes:
Resources/Server/<PluginName>/Every plugin needs its own folder. Do not put several unrelated plugins directly in Resources/Server; give each one a separate directory so BeamMP can identify and manage them independently.
A working server tree can look like this:

└── main.luaThe executable name differs between Windows and Linux, but the relationship between ServerConfig.toml, Resources, Server, and the plugin folder is what matters.

How to install a plugin step by step
- Stop the server or leave it unstarted. Copying files while the server is running can make activation timing unclear. A stopped server also lets you inspect the final folder before testing.
- Open the configured resource directory. Read
ResourceFolderinServerConfig.toml. If it uses the normal value, openResourcesin the BeamMP server folder. - Open or create the server-plugin directory. Inside the resource directory, use
Server. The resulting path should beResourceFolder/Server. - Create one folder for the plugin. Name it for the plugin, for example
MyPlugin. Keep this folder separate from every other plugin folder. - Copy the plugin’s top-level Lua files into that folder. Files such as
main.luamust sit directly insideResources/Server/MyPlugin. BeamMP automatically loads Lua files in the plugin’s main directory when the server starts. - Keep supporting files in subfolders only when the plugin expects them there. The scripting reference states that Lua files in subfolders are ignored by automatic loading. A subfolder is appropriate only when the plugin code loads a file through
require()or another mechanism documented by that plugin. - Check the final path and contents. Confirm that at least one
.luafile is directly inside the plugin folder, that the folder is beneath the configured resource directory, and that the spelling of every directory matches the intended path. - Start or restart the BeamMP server. A restart is the safest way to activate newly copied files. The server manual describes hot-reloading for changed top-level Lua files, but current 3.x reference material notes that files added after startup are not tracked in some versions. Restarting avoids relying on that difference.
- Watch the console and log. Look for a successful load or for Lua syntax, runtime, and path errors. The normal server files include
Server.log, which is useful when console output has already scrolled past.
How automatic loading works
BeamMP scans the plugin directories beneath Resources/Server. A folder containing at least one Lua file is treated as a plugin. Top-level Lua files are loaded automatically at server startup. This means the following file is in the automatically scanned location:
Resources/Server/MyPlugin/main.luaBy contrast, this file is not automatically loaded merely because it has a .lua extension:
Resources/Server/MyPlugin/modules/helpers.luaThe second arrangement can still be valid if main.lua explicitly imports the helper using the mechanism required by the plugin. Do not move every supporting file into the top level without checking the plugin’s own structure; some code expects a particular relative path.
Changing an already loaded top-level Lua file may be hot-reloadable according to the server manual. Adding a brand-new file after startup is less dependable in some current 3.x versions, so a full restart should be your normal activation step after installation or after adding files.

If a download contains a ZIP intended for clients, do not unpack it into Resources/Server and do not rename it as a Lua plugin. Conversely, putting a server Lua plugin in Resources/Client will not make the server load it.

How to verify that the plugin loaded
Check the directory before launch
ServerConfig.tomlpoints to the resource directory you are inspecting.- The path is exactly
ResourceFolder/Server/<PluginName>. - The plugin has its own folder beneath
Server. - At least one
.luafile is directly inside that folder. - Any Lua files in subfolders are intentionally imported by the plugin rather than expected to load automatically.
Check startup output
Start or restart the server and read the console as it initializes. A syntax error, runtime error, or path error generally identifies the next action: correct the Lua code or version, repair the directory layout, or restore a missing supporting file. If the console is no longer visible, inspect Server.log in the server files.
Test the feature in the right place
A server-only plugin should be tested through the server behavior it changes. If the feature depends on a client asset, confirm that the required ZIP is in Resources/Client and that any documented client Lua extension and modScript.lua requirements are also met. A server plugin loading successfully does not prove that a separate client component is installed.
Why a BeamMP plugin is not loading
The folder is in the wrong location
The most common placement error is one directory too high, one directory too deep, or under the wrong resource root. Compare the actual location with ResourceFolder/Server/<PluginName>, using the value in ServerConfig.toml rather than assuming the directory is named Resources.
The plugin has no top-level Lua file
BeamMP identifies a server plugin folder by the presence of at least one Lua file and automatically loads Lua files in that folder’s main directory. If all Lua files are under lib, modules, or another subfolder, the plugin may appear to be ignored. Move only the entry-point files required by the plugin into the top level and leave supporting files where the code expects them.
The server was not restarted
Changing an existing script may be hot-reloadable, but newly added files are not tracked after startup in some current 3.x versions. Restart after the initial copy, after adding a new Lua file, and whenever the console does not show the expected load.

The plugin targets another BeamMP generation
BeamMP 3.0.0 changed the Lua plugin system substantially. An old plugin may be physically correct yet incompatible with a 3.x server. Check the plugin’s target server version and migration notes before changing code or blaming the folder layout.
The Lua code reports an error
Read the console and Server.log for syntax and runtime messages. A syntax error prevents the affected script from starting; a runtime error can occur after loading when the plugin calls an unavailable API or assumes a missing file. Use the reported file and line information to identify whether the problem is code, a missing dependency, or an incompatible server API.
The plugin needs a client component
Some features are not server-only. If the plugin documentation calls for a client ZIP, place that ZIP in Resources/Client. If it calls for a Lua client extension and modScript.lua, install those client-side requirements as documented. Keeping every file in Resources/Server cannot satisfy a client dependency.
Players cannot connect after setup
Connection failure is a networking problem, not proof that the plugin copy failed. The BeamMP FAQ identifies port forwarding as a check and gives 30814 as the common default in typical configurations. Forward the configured port for both TCP and UDP, then verify the actual port in your server configuration rather than assuming the default is still in use.
Choosing a plugin safely
BeamMP’s official documentation does not publish a universal ranking of plugins. Evaluate a candidate against the way you operate your server instead of choosing by download count alone.

These checks do not establish that one plugin is universally better than another. They help you avoid installing a package that is incompatible, incomplete, or unsuitable for your server’s purpose.
Updates, removal, and recovery
Updating a plugin
Read the new release’s compatibility and migration notes before replacing files. Stop the server, preserve a copy of the current plugin folder and any configuration it uses, then replace the plugin files in the same Resources/Server/<PluginName> location. Start the server and inspect the console and Server.log. If the new version fails, restore the previous folder and restart.

Stop the server, remove or move that plugin’s own folder from Resources/Server, and start the server again. Do not delete neighboring plugin folders or the entire Server directory. Review the log after removal for another plugin that may have depended on the deleted files.
Keeping a recovery copy
Before an update or structural change, keep a copy of the working plugin folder and its configuration. This gives you a known-good rollback point without altering unrelated server resources. Preserve the folder structure in the copy so it can be restored directly beneath the configured Server directory.
Installation checklist
- The BeamMP server has been initialized and has generated
ServerConfig.tomland its resource directory. ResourceFolderinServerConfig.tomlpoints to the directory you are using.- The plugin is under
ResourceFolder/Server/<PluginName>. - The plugin has its own folder and at least one top-level
.luafile. - Subfolder Lua files are used only when the plugin explicitly imports them.
- The plugin targets the BeamMP server version you are running.
- Any required client ZIP or client scripting component is installed under the client resource path.
- The server was restarted after copying newly added files.
- The console and
Server.logshow no Lua, path, or runtime errors. - If players cannot connect, the configured port is forwarded for both TCP and UDP.
What to remember
For a normal BeamMP server plugin, the decisive path is Resources/Server/<PluginName> (or the equivalent directory named by ResourceFolder). Put the plugin’s entry-point Lua files directly in that folder, restart the server, and use the console and Server.log to diagnose failures. Keep client ZIP mods in Resources/Client, and treat BeamMP 3.x compatibility as a requirement rather than an optional check.
