Install phpBB on a VPS by selecting a specific phpBB release, preparing a supported PHP and SQL stack, creating a dedicated database user, uploading the complete archive, running /install/, and then removing the installer and restricting sensitive directories. The exact PHP and database requirements depend on the release: phpBB 3.3.x and phpBB 4.0.x have different version ranges, so check the requirements page for the release you download before installing packages.

Choose the phpBB release before preparing the server

Do not build the server first and decide on the phpBB version later. The official phpBB 3.3.x requirements list PHP 7.2.0 or newer through PHP 8.3, along with JSON, mbstring and XML support and the getimagesize() function. Its supported SQL engines include MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle (phpBB, 2026). A separate phpBB 4.0.x repository document lists PHP 8.2.0 through 8.5 and newer database minimums (phpBB, 2026).

Release family PHP range stated by phpBB Other stated requirements Installation decision
phpBB 3.3.x 7.2.0 through 8.3 json, mbstring, XML, getimagesize(); supported SQL engines include MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle Use the 3.3.x requirements page for the exact point release and database driver.
phpBB 4.0.x 8.2.0 through 8.5 Newer database floors are specified in the 4.0.x requirements document. Use the 4.0.x requirements page and do not reuse 3.3.x package assumptions.

Download the archive first, note its exact version, and then install a PHP version and database driver that the corresponding requirements page supports. A distribution may offer several PHP streams; do not force an older stream onto a newer release or assume that a newer stream is accepted by every 3.3.x point release.

Preflight: domain, access and operating-system preparation

Confirm the VPS is usable

  • Log in over SSH with an account that can use sudo.
  • Point a domain or test hostname at the VPS address. You can install using an IP address, but a hostname is needed for a normal HTTPS certificate and final forum URL.
  • Decide whether Apache or nginx will terminate HTTP and HTTPS. Apache is the simpler first-install path; nginx is also suitable when its PHP FastCGI and directory-deny rules are configured explicitly.
  • Record the forum document root, such as /var/www/forum, before extracting files.

Patch Ubuntu and install the basic stack

On an Ubuntu VPS, update the package index and apply security updates before installing services:

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade

Ubuntu’s PHP deployment guidance uses Apache2 with a database service such as MySQL (Canonical, 2026). A typical Apache-based installation is:

sudo apt install apache2 mysql-server php libapache2-mod-php php-mysql php-xml php-mbstring php-gd php-curl php-zip php-intl unzip

Package names differ by Ubuntu release and by the selected database. For PostgreSQL, install the PHP PostgreSQL driver instead of the MySQL driver. If the selected phpBB release requires a separate JSON package, install the package supplied by your PHP stream; on some PHP versions JSON is built in.

For nginx, install nginx, PHP-FPM, the matching database driver and the same required PHP extensions:

sudo apt install nginx mysql-server php-fpm php-mysql php-xml php-mbstring php-gd php-curl php-zip php-intl unzip

After installation, verify the interpreter and required functions rather than assuming that a package name means the feature is active:

php -v
php -m | grep -E 'json|mbstring|xml|mysqli|pdo_mysql|gd'
php -r 'var_export(function_exists("getimagesize")); echo PHP_EOL;'

The final command should print true. If it prints false, install or enable the PHP image extension required by your distribution, restart Apache or PHP-FPM, and run the check again. The phpBB requirements page remains authoritative for the release you selected.

Apache or nginx: decide how much configuration you want to own

Choice What you configure Why choose it Main risk
Apache with mod_php Virtual host, PHP module, HTTPS and the supplied directory protections Few moving parts for a first manual installation Leaving the default virtual host or permissive overrides in place can expose the wrong directory.
nginx with PHP-FPM Server block, FastCGI socket, index handling, upload limits and explicit deny rules Clear separation between the web server and PHP process A missing FastCGI or deny rule can produce downloads, 404 errors or direct access to private files.

There is no benchmark in the cited phpBB material establishing that one option is faster for your forum. Choose the configuration you can patch, monitor and recover confidently.

Create a dedicated database and user

Use a separate database and account for each board. Do not use the database administrator account in phpBB. The installer asks for the database type, host, port when non-default, database name, username and password, so record those values in a password manager.

MySQL or MariaDB example

Open the database shell as an administrator:

sudo mysql

Create a database with a Unicode character set, create a unique account restricted to the local server, and grant only that database’s privileges. Replace the secret in the command with a randomly generated password and do not place it in shell history on a shared machine:

CREATE DATABASE phpbb_forum CHARACTER SET utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_unicode_ci;
CREATE USER 'phpbb_user'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'GENERATE_AND_PASTE_A_LONG_RANDOM_SECRET';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON phpbb_forum.* TO 'phpbb_user'@'localhost';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
EXIT;

If the database server listens on a different host, create the account with the narrowest required source address rather than a wildcard. Keep the database bound to the private interface unless remote access is genuinely required, and protect any required remote connection with firewall rules and TLS.

PostgreSQL, SQLite and other engines

phpBB 3.3.x lists PostgreSQL, SQLite, Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle in addition to MySQL and MariaDB. The PHP driver, database creation process and installer fields differ for each engine. Install the driver named by the release requirements, create a least-privilege database account using that engine’s administrative tools, and keep the host, port, database name, username and password available when the installer opens. Do not enter MySQL commands for a PostgreSQL or SQLite deployment.

Download and place the complete phpBB package

Keep the archive structure intact

  1. Download the complete package for the release you selected from the official phpBB downloads page. Do not use a partial source tree or omit the vendor directory.
  2. Transfer the archive to the VPS with your preferred secure copy method, or download it directly on the server over HTTPS from the official source.
  3. Create the document root and extract the archive there. If the archive contains a top-level directory, move its contents into the directory that your virtual host serves.
sudo mkdir -p /var/www/forum
sudo tar -xf phpBB-<version>.tar.bz2 -C /var/www/forum --strip-components=1
sudo find /var/www/forum -maxdepth 1 -type f -printf '%fn' | sort | head

The command uses a version variable only to show where your downloaded filename belongs; use the exact filename on your server. Confirm that the forum root contains phpBB’s application files, config.php may be created later, and directories such as install, store, cache and vendor.

Set temporary installer permissions without using 777

The installer must write configuration and cache data. Determine the web-server account for your distribution, commonly www-data on Ubuntu, and grant only the directories phpBB identifies as writable. Do not make the entire filesystem world-writable:

sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/forum
sudo find /var/www/forum -type d -exec chmod 755 {} ;
sudo find /var/www/forum -type f -exec chmod 644 {} ;

Treat those commands as a starting point, not a reason to leave every file owned by the web process permanently. If your hosting layout uses a deployment account, retain ownership with that account and grant the web user write access only to the paths required by the requirements screen. After installation, restore restrictive ownership and permissions while preserving write access for upload, cache and other directories that your selected release documents as necessary.

Run the phpBB web installer

Open the requirements page

  1. Visit https://your-domain.example/forum/install/, replacing the hostname and path with your virtual-host configuration. Use HTTP only temporarily if HTTPS is not configured yet.
  2. The first page is the requirements list. phpBB checks the PHP runtime, extensions, database support and filesystem permissions before allowing the installation to continue (phpBB installation documentation).
  3. Resolve every failed check. A missing extension requires a package install and service restart; a filesystem failure requires a narrowly scoped ownership or permission change; a database failure requires checking the driver, host, port and credentials.

Do not bypass a failed requirement by suppressing the check. The installer will not continue until the runtime, database and filesystem checks pass.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enter database and administrator details

  1. Select Install after the requirements page passes.
  2. Choose the database type and enter the host, port if non-default, database name, database username and password created earlier. For a local MySQL or MariaDB service, the host is commonly localhost, but use the value appropriate to your socket and PHP driver.
  3. Create the first administrator account with a unique username and a long, unique password. Use an email address you can access because phpBB uses it for board administration and configured email functions.
  4. Leave advanced settings at their defaults unless you have a specific requirement. They can be changed in the Administration Control Panel after the board is running.
  5. Submit the form and wait for phpBB to write its configuration and initialize the schema.

phpBB normally writes config.php. If the web server cannot write it, the installer provides a generated file for download. Download that file through the installer, place it at the forum root as instructed, set its ownership and permissions appropriately, and continue only after the installer confirms that it can read the file.

Finish the installation and remove the installer

After the installer reports success, log in to the board and open the Administration Control Panel. The official documentation states that the Administration Control Panel remains restricted while the install/ directory is present. Remove the directory from the document root:

sudo rm -rf /var/www/forum/install

Check the path before running the command. Removing the wrong directory is irreversible without restoring the source archive. Keep a copy of the exact release archive outside the web root for future updates, but never leave a second extracted install/ directory publicly reachable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Harden the web server and VPS

Protect phpBB’s sensitive directories

phpBB’s security guidance identifies cache/, files/, includes/, phpbb/, store/ and vendor/ as directories that should not be directly browsable. The package supplies Apache protections and its documentation points to nginx examples (phpBB, 2026). Verify that your virtual host actually applies those protections; do not assume that extracting the archive is sufficient.

For nginx, a location rule following the documented directory-deny approach can be placed in the relevant server block, then tested before reloading:

location ~ ^/(cache|files|includes|phpbb|store|vendor)/ {
    deny all;
    return 403;
}

sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl reload nginx

Merge this with the phpBB configuration supplied for your release and review whether any directory must remain reachable through a controlled script. A blanket rule copied without understanding your board’s upload behavior can break legitimate downloads; the goal is to deny direct listing and execution while preserving phpBB’s normal request flow.

Enable HTTPS and restrict administration

  • Install a certificate for the real hostname and redirect HTTP to HTTPS. Set phpBB’s cookie and server settings consistently with the final HTTPS URL.
  • Allow SSH only from trusted addresses where practical, disable password authentication after key-based access is verified, and avoid exposing the database port to the public internet.
  • Use a firewall that permits only the services you operate, normally SSH, HTTP and HTTPS.
  • Keep database credentials out of shell history, ticket systems and publicly readable configuration backups.

Prepare for spam

Public phpBB boards attract automated spam. Apply phpBB’s anti-spam guidance soon after installation: enable a current CAPTCHA or anti-spam configuration, give moderators only the permissions they need, and add rate limiting at the network edge where available. Monitor failed logins and review new-account activity instead of waiting for the first spam wave.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Validate the board before inviting users

Use an administrator account to run a controlled acceptance check:

  1. Open the public board and the Administration Control Panel over HTTPS.
  2. Create a test forum, assign an administrator-only permission, and confirm that a normal test account cannot see or use it.
  3. Upload an allowed image or attachment and verify that it can be retrieved through phpBB without exposing directory listings.
  4. Configure email and send a test message. If delivery fails, inspect the mail configuration and server logs rather than repeatedly changing permissions.
  5. Request each protected directory directly and confirm that it returns a denial rather than a directory index or source file.
  6. Inspect the Apache, nginx, PHP and database logs for warnings, fatal errors and permission failures.
  7. Remove the test content and record the working PHP version, database engine, package version and document-root path.

Troubleshoot common installer failures

Requirements page reports a missing PHP extension

Check the active CLI modules and the web SAPI separately. The CLI command can use a different php.ini from Apache or PHP-FPM. Install the extension package for the active PHP stream, restart the relevant service, and reload the requirements page. Confirm XML, mbstring, JSON support, the selected database driver and getimagesize().

Database connection fails

  • Confirm that the database service is running and listening on the expected local socket or host.
  • Check spelling and capitalization of the database name and username.
  • Verify that the account’s host restriction matches the connection method. A user created for localhost may not authenticate through a TCP address, and the reverse can also occur.
  • Test the same credentials with the database client’s command-line tool, then enter the tested host and port in phpBB.

The installer cannot write config.php

Do not make the whole document root writable. Grant temporary write access to the web user or use the installer’s generated-file procedure, place the resulting config.php at the forum root, then restore restrictive ownership and permissions.

Pages download PHP source or return a 502 error

With nginx, verify that the FastCGI socket path matches the installed PHP-FPM service and that the server block passes index.php requests to PHP-FPM. A 502 generally indicates a stopped service or wrong socket; a source download indicates that PHP handling is missing. Test the configuration and inspect the nginx and PHP-FPM logs before reloading.

Uploads fail after permissions are tightened

Identify the exact directory named by the phpBB error and grant the web user write access only there. Do not respond by applying chmod -R 777. Re-run the upload test and review the server error log for the first permission-denied event.

Backups, updates and recovery

Back up before every change

A recoverable phpBB backup has two parts: a full database dump and the files that contain configuration, uploads, images, extensions and any customizations. Preserve config.php and uploaded content. Store backups outside the web root, restrict their permissions, and test restoring them to a separate environment.

Update source files and the database together

Before updating, take a fresh database and file backup. Replace or update the phpBB source files according to the release documentation, preserve config.php, uploaded files and extensions as appropriate, then run the documented updater or CLI migration for that release. Updating only the database is incomplete: phpBB explicitly says to update the source files even when the database updater has been run (phpBB installation documentation). Remove the install/ directory again after a successful update.

Monitor the running VPS

  • Check free disk space so uploads, logs and database files cannot fill the volume.
  • Review PHP and web-server error logs after upgrades and configuration changes.
  • Watch failed logins, new registrations and moderator queues for abuse.
  • Keep the operating system, PHP stream, database server and phpBB release within their supported security windows.

Deployment choices and their trade-offs

Decision Control and transparency Maintenance burden Best fit
Manual command-line installation Full visibility into packages, virtual hosts, permissions and backups You must patch and troubleshoot each layer Administrators who want reproducible configuration and direct recovery access
Managed image or one-click deployment Less initial configuration visibility Provider-specific update and backup procedures Users who value convenience and accept platform constraints
Apache Simple first deployment and packaged protections Virtual-host and module maintenance First-time phpBB administrators
nginx with PHP-FPM Explicit FastCGI and access-control configuration More settings to maintain and test Administrators already comfortable with nginx
MySQL or MariaDB Common VPS tooling and familiar backup workflows Database patching and credential management Most conventional forum deployments
PostgreSQL, SQLite, Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle Uses an engine supported by the selected phpBB release Driver, backup and operational practices differ Existing environments with a specific database standard

The cited compatibility documents establish supported engines and PHP ranges, not forum-capacity or performance benchmarks. Size the VPS from your measured traffic, enabled extensions, attachment volume and backup requirements rather than an unverified capacity number.
