Install OpenMod by stopping your Unturned server, backing up the server and plugin data, downloading the current OpenMod.Unturned.Module-vX.X.X.zip release, and copying its complete OpenMod.Unturned folder into the server installation’s Modules directory. Start the server, allow extra time for OpenMod to download its core components, and confirm the module loaded in the console before installing plugins. If RocketMod is already installed, you can keep it and either use the normal module installation or the RocketMod installer-plugin route.
What OpenMod is and what this installation changes
OpenMod is a .NET plugin framework. The Unturned implementation runs as an Unturned module, then provides the framework used by OpenMod plugins. Installing the module does not by itself install gameplay plugins; those are added after the framework starts successfully.

The critical detail is the directory hierarchy: the module’s OpenMod.Unturned directory must remain intact inside Modules. Copying only individual files, renaming the directory, or creating an extra nested level prevents Unturned from finding the module.
OpenMod can run alongside RocketMod. You do not have to remove RocketMod to use OpenMod, but RocketMod must remain separately installed if you want OpenMod’s RocketMod integration options, RocketMod permissions, or RocketMod economy support.

Before you begin
Stop the server and make a recoverable backup
Stop the Unturned process cleanly before changing modules or plugins. Back up the complete server directory, including the world data, configuration files, the Modules directory, the Rocket directory if RocketMod is installed, and any OpenMod plugin and configuration data already present. A separate copy outside the live server directory gives you a rollback point if the first start fails.
Check the server build and release assets
OpenMod release compatibility is not guaranteed for every Unturned update. The releases listing currently surfaces OpenMod version 3.8.5, shown as released on 22 May in that listing, and identifies a netstandard2.1 target. Those are release metadata, not a universal Unturned-version compatibility promise.

Before production deployment, read the current release notes and inspect the downloadable assets. Confirm that the module package and its Unturned redistributable/API files match the build you are running. The official installation guide intentionally writes the ZIP name with a version placeholder, OpenMod.Unturned.Module-vX.X.X.zip; replace that placeholder with the version of the asset you actually download.
Decide which installation route fits your server

Route 1: install the OpenMod.Unturned module manually
1. Stop and back up the live installation
- Stop the Unturned server and wait until its process has exited.
- Copy the complete server directory to a backup location.
- Verify that the backup contains the server configuration, world data,
Modules, and any existing plugin and configuration directories.
2. Download the correct module package
Use the current OpenMod release source and download the Unturned module asset named in the release, such as OpenMod.Unturned.Module-vX.X.X.zip. Do not assume that the newest framework release automatically supports your Unturned build. Read the release notes and check the asset contents first.
3. Extract the archive without flattening it
Extract the ZIP into a temporary location. You should obtain a directory named OpenMod.Unturned. Preserve that directory name and everything beneath it; do not copy only the DLL files and do not rename the folder.
4. Copy the complete directory into Modules
Open the Unturned installation’s Modules directory and copy the complete extracted OpenMod.Unturned directory into it. The resulting path must be:

Unturned installation/Modules/OpenMod.UnturnedThe wording above describes the hierarchy, not a literal directory name for every host. If the archive already contains an OpenMod.Unturned folder, copy that folder as a unit. Avoid an accidental double nesting such as Modules/OpenMod.Unturned/OpenMod.Unturned, which leaves the module one level too deep.
5. Start the server and allow the first run to finish
Start Unturned normally. OpenMod documentation warns that the first start takes longer because OpenMod downloads its core components. Do not interrupt the process solely because startup exceeds the time you normally expect from an unchanged server.
6. Verify module loading in the console
Watch the server console through startup and confirm that OpenMod loads as a module without a fatal error. The exact wording varies by release and server host, so use the module-loading messages and the absence of startup exceptions rather than relying on one fixed log line. Do not add plugins until this check succeeds; otherwise a plugin error can hide a module or dependency problem.
7. Keep the first successful state as a rollback point
After OpenMod starts successfully, stop the server and preserve a copy of this known-good state. It lets you distinguish later plugin problems from a module installation problem and makes an upgrade reversible.

Smartly Dressed Games documentation also describes a RocketMod-assisted path. Use it only when RocketMod is already installed and you have confirmed that the installer assets are still appropriate. The installer repository is archived, so check the current official OpenMod release source before deploying an archived installer workflow.
- Stop the server and make the same complete backup described above.
- Download the OpenMod Installer Plugin from the current source you have verified.
- Place the installer plugin in
/Rocket/Pluginswhile preserving the server’s existing RocketMod directory structure. - Restart the server and wait for RocketMod to load the installer plugin.
- Run
/openmod installfrom the server console or an administrative command context. - Allow the installation to complete, then inspect the console for OpenMod module-loading errors before installing additional plugins.
The installer repository documents optional migration flags. Use a flag only when you understand what it migrates and have a backup that can restore the pre-migration state; the available flags can change independently of the archived repository’s maintenance status.

Using OpenMod and RocketMod together
OpenMod supports side-by-side installation with RocketMod. Side-by-side support means both frameworks can remain present; it does not mean every plugin can be used interchangeably. RocketMod plugins still require RocketMod, and OpenMod plugins still require OpenMod.
Permission integration
OpenMod’s integration configuration can select RocketMod permissions, OpenMod permissions, or separate permission systems. Choose the system that matches the commands and groups you intend to administer. If you select RocketMod permissions, RocketMod must be installed and functioning independently of OpenMod.

Economy integration
The economy integration can similarly select RocketMod/Uconomy, OpenMod, or separate economy systems. Install and configure RocketMod/Uconomy separately before selecting that option. A side-by-side installation does not automatically migrate balances or permissions between frameworks; treat any migration as a deliberate, backed-up operation.
When to keep the systems separate
Separate permission or economy systems can reduce coupling when you are introducing OpenMod gradually or testing plugins without changing the existing RocketMod setup. The trade-off is administrative duplication: commands, groups, balances, and plugin expectations may be split between systems, so document which framework owns each function.
Confirming a healthy installation before adding plugins
A successful process start is not enough. Use this short validation sequence:
- The server starts with the
OpenMod.Unturneddirectory in the correctModuleslocation. - The console shows OpenMod module loading and no fatal exception associated with the module.
- The first-start download has completed rather than being terminated halfway through.
- Existing RocketMod functionality still behaves as expected if RocketMod remains installed.
- You have a fresh backup of the working module state.
If any check fails, fix the module installation first. Installing several plugins before the base framework is verified makes the eventual failure harder to isolate.

Install OpenMod plugins from NuGet
Once OpenMod is running, the simplest supported workflow is to install a NuGet plugin from the server console.
Install the latest stable package
Run:
openmod install <package id>Replace <package id> with the plugin’s NuGet package ID. Use the package ID, not an arbitrary display name, and review the plugin’s own dependency and compatibility notes before installing it on a production server.
Pin a specific version
To request a particular package version, append the version with @:
openmod install <package id>@<version>Version pinning makes an upgrade reproducible and helps you roll back a plugin without silently receiving a newer dependency. Keep a record of the package ID and version alongside your server backup.
Include prerelease packages deliberately
Enable prerelease packages with the -Pre option:
openmod install <package id> -PreUse prereleases for testing or when a plugin author specifically requires one. A prerelease can change APIs or dependencies before a stable release, so test it on a copy of the server first.
Reload OpenMod after the change
Run:
openmod reloadOpenMod’s plugin documentation requires a reload after installing or updating plugins. The same reload is required after removing a plugin. Watch the console for the plugin’s load result and for dependency errors before allowing players to use the new functionality.

Install a plugin manually when you need file-level control
Manual installation is useful when a plugin is distributed outside NuGet, when you need to inspect a package before deployment, or when you must control exactly which DLLs are present.

- Obtain the plugin DLL and every required library from a source you trust, and check that the plugin targets the OpenMod and Unturned versions you run.
- Copy the plugin DLL and its required libraries into
openmod/plugins, preserving the files’ names. - Remove superseded copies only after confirming which version the plugin requires; duplicate DLLs can create ambiguous loads.
- Start the server or run
openmod reloadafter the files are in place. - Read the console output and test the plugin’s commands or features before returning the server to normal operation.

Common failures and how to recover
OpenMod does not appear to load
- Stop the server and inspect the path. The required location is
Modules/OpenMod.Unturnedinside the Unturned installation. - Correct an extra nesting level such as
Modules/OpenMod.Unturned/OpenMod.Unturned. - Restore the complete folder from the ZIP instead of copying selected DLLs.
- Check the release asset and Unturned redistributable/API files against the current server build.
- Restart and read the console again before changing plugins.
Startup takes much longer than usual
The first OpenMod start downloads core components and can take longer than later starts. Keep the server running while that process completes unless the console reports a fatal error. If startup remains stuck across repeated attempts, stop the server, restore the backup, and re-check the release asset and file hierarchy before trying again.
The /openmod install command is unavailable
That command belongs to the RocketMod installer-plugin route. Confirm that RocketMod is installed, the installer plugin is in /Rocket/Plugins, and the server was restarted after copying it. If you are using the manual module route, install plugins with the OpenMod console command after OpenMod itself has loaded; do not expect the RocketMod installer command to exist.
A plugin fails after installation
- Run
openmod reloadand read the complete console error. - Check the plugin’s required OpenMod, Unturned, and library versions.
- If you used a prerelease, test the corresponding stable version or remove the prerelease and restore the previous package.
- For a manual install, verify that every required library is in
openmod/pluginsand that an older duplicate DLL is not being loaded. - Remove the plugin or restore the pre-install backup if it prevents the server from starting.
RocketMod features stop working after enabling integration
OpenMod’s integration settings can select RocketMod or OpenMod ownership for permissions and economy. Verify that the selected provider is actually installed and configured. If RocketMod is not present, choose an OpenMod or separate system instead of selecting RocketMod integration.
Updating or removing OpenMod safely
Updating the module
- Read the target release notes and confirm the module and Unturned API assets match your server build.
- Stop the server and back up the current working installation.
- Replace the existing
OpenMod.Unturneddirectory with the complete directory from the new release, preserving the name and hierarchy. - Start the server without changing plugins, then verify module loading and console errors.
- Only after the base module is healthy should you update plugins or configurations.
Removing OpenMod
- Stop the server and preserve a backup of the current state.
- Remove or move the
OpenMod.Unturneddirectory fromModules. - Remove OpenMod plugins and configuration only if you are certain you will not restore OpenMod; keeping a separate archive makes later recovery easier.
- If you used the RocketMod installer route, remove the installer plugin from
/Rocket/Pluginsas part of the rollback. - Start the server and verify that RocketMod-only operation, if applicable, works as expected.
Production checklist
- Server stopped before file changes.
- Complete server, plugin, and configuration backup verified.
- Current OpenMod release notes and assets checked against the Unturned build.
- Complete
OpenMod.Unturnedfolder copied toModuleswithout renaming or extra nesting. - First start allowed to download core components.
- Console confirms module loading before any plugin installation.
- RocketMod retained separately when its plugins, permissions, or economy are still required.
- Permission and economy providers selected intentionally in the integration configuration.
- Plugins installed through NuGet or copied with all required libraries into
openmod/plugins. openmod reloadrun after every plugin install, update, or removal.- Known-good backups retained before production upgrades.
Planning the server around OpenMod
If you do not want to maintain the operating system, updates, backups, and console access yourself, a managed Unturned server hosting service can provide those operational layers. Confirm that the host permits module installation, gives you access to the Modules directory or an equivalent file manager, supports console commands, and lets you create and download backups. Those capabilities matter more for OpenMod administration than a generic hosting feature list because you must be able to verify release assets, reload plugins, and recover from an incompatible update.
