The most repeatable way to install OpenLiteSpeed on a Linux VPS is to add the official LiteSpeed repository, install the server package, and then install LSPHP separately if the VPS will run PHP. This method supports current, non-EOL CentOS 8, 9 and 10; Debian 11, 12 and 13; and Ubuntu 22, 24 and 26, along with listed derivatives such as AlmaLinux, CloudLinux, Oracle Linux, Rocky Linux and VzLinux. You will need SSH access, sudo privileges, a supported 64-bit operating system, and permission to open TCP port 7080 for the WebAdmin console.
Choose the installation method before changing the VPS
OpenLiteSpeed has several installation paths. They are alternatives, not layers to combine. For most production VPSs, the repository method is the best default because package installation and later upgrades follow the operating system’s package manager. The one-click script is more automated but can add a complete application stack. A precompiled binary gives you a self-contained installation path, while a source build provides the most control at the cost of more administration.

If you are replacing an incompatible VPS image, verify its distribution and release first. Package availability and supported releases change, so check the current OpenLiteSpeed support matrix immediately before installation rather than relying on an old image or tutorial.
Prerequisites and pre-installation checks
Confirm the operating system
Connect over SSH and identify the distribution and release:

cat /etc/os-releaseThe repository procedure currently covers CentOS 8, 9 and 10; Debian 11, 12 and 13; and Ubuntu 22, 24 and 26, including the documented derivatives AlmaLinux, CloudLinux, Oracle Linux, Rocky Linux and VzLinux. “Current” means the release is still supported by both the operating-system vendor and the OpenLiteSpeed repository. If the VPS is running an older, end-of-life release, upgrade or rebuild it before installing.
Use an account with sudo privileges
The installation writes under /usr/local/lsws and adds system packages, so use a root shell or an account that can run sudo. Keep the SSH session open until the service and WebAdmin console have been tested.

OpenLiteSpeed’s WebAdmin console listens on TCP port 7080. Allow that port in both the VPS operating-system firewall and any cloud-provider firewall or security group, but do not expose administrative ports more broadly than necessary. Your normal website ports, such as HTTP and HTTPS, must also be allowed when you publish a site; opening those ports is separate from the OpenLiteSpeed installation itself.
Install OpenLiteSpeed from the official repository
The repository guide describes this as an easy way to install OpenLiteSpeed and PHP on a supported operating system. Run the following commands after connecting by SSH.
1. Add the repository
sudo wget -O - https://repo.litespeed.sh | sudo bashThis command downloads and runs the repository setup script from https://repo.litespeed.sh. Review the output for repository errors before moving to the package-installation step.
2. Install the server package
Use the package manager for the distribution family:
# Debian and Ubuntu
sudo apt-get -y install openlitespeed
# CentOS-family distributions
sudo yum install openlitespeed -yWhen the command completes, the default OpenLiteSpeed installation is under /usr/local/lsws. The package step installs the web server itself; it does not automatically install every PHP component an application might require.

3. Install LSPHP for PHP applications
Install the LSPHP version and modules your application needs. The documented example uses LSPHP 8.4:
# Debian and Ubuntu
sudo apt-get install lsphp84 lsphp84-common lsphp84-mysql
# CentOS-family distributions
sudo yum install lsphp84 lsphp84-common lsphp84-mysqlndFor this example, the LSPHP binary is located at /usr/local/lsws/lsphp84/bin/lsphp. Confirm that the package manager completes without dependency errors before configuring a PHP site. Additional PHP extensions may be needed by a particular application, but the exact list depends on that application and should not be guessed from the web-server installation alone.
Set the WebAdmin password and open the console
Find or change the generated password
OpenLiteSpeed stores the randomly generated WebAdmin password in:
/usr/local/lsws/adminpasswdTo set a new password or change the existing one, run:
sudo /usr/local/lsws/admin/misc/admpass.shChoose a unique, long password and store it in an approved password manager. Do not put the password in shell history, a ticket, or a public configuration file.
Allow TCP 7080
Permit TCP 7080 in the VPS firewall and in any external cloud firewall. Firewall syntax differs by distribution and provider, so use the control panel or firewall tool appropriate to your environment. If the port is blocked at either layer, the server can be healthy while the browser still reports a timeout.
Sign in

https://your-domain-or-vps-ip:7080/A certificate warning is possible when the console is reached by an IP address or before a trusted certificate has been configured. Verify that you are connecting to your own VPS, then authenticate with the password from adminpasswd or the password you set with admpass.sh.
Start OpenLiteSpeed and verify the service
Use the bundled control utility for a basic start and status check:
sudo /usr/local/lsws/bin/lswsctrl start
sudo /usr/local/lsws/bin/lswsctrl statusThe status command should report a running server. If it does not, inspect the command output and the OpenLiteSpeed logs under /usr/local/lsws before attempting repeated starts. A successful process check does not prove that a browser can reach the site: verify the firewall, DNS, listener ports and virtual-host configuration separately.
Validate the four installation layers
- Package layer: the
openlitespeedpackage and any requested LSPHP packages installed without errors. - Process layer:
lswsctrl statusreports the server as running. - Administration layer: TCP 7080 is reachable and the WebAdmin credentials work.
- Application layer: the intended virtual host, document root and PHP handler are configured and tested with the application’s own health check.
Using the one-click installation script
The official one-click script is useful when you want OpenLiteSpeed and LSPHP installed together with minimal manual package work:

The -k option tells curl not to verify the TLS certificate, so use this path only when you understand that trade-off and have verified the script source and destination independently.
With -W, the script also installs MariaDB, WordPress and LiteSpeed Cache:
bash <(curl -k https://raw.githubusercontent.com/litespeedtech/ols1clk/master/ols1clk.sh) -WUse the bundled option only on a fresh VPS where all of those components are wanted together. It changes the machine beyond the web server itself, so document exactly what it will add, take a restorable snapshot if appropriate, and avoid running it over an existing production stack. If you need a minimal server or already operate a database and application separately, use the repository method instead.

Installing from a precompiled binary
The binary guide requires superuser privileges and documents a one-click binary path for its listed 64-bit operating systems. This route is appropriate when you need the supplied binary package rather than repository-managed packages.
- Obtain the appropriate OpenLiteSpeed binary archive for the supported 64-bit operating system.
- Extract the archive and enter its directory:
tar -zxvf openlitespeed-*.tgz
cd openlitespeed- Run the installer as a privileged user:
./install.sh- Start the server and check its status:
/usr/local/lsws/bin/lswsctrl start
/usr/local/lsws/bin/lswsctrl statusThe binary route does not make repository packages part of the same installation. Keep a record of the archive version and installation date so future maintenance follows the same path.
Building OpenLiteSpeed from source
A source build is for administrators who need custom compilation or configuration control. It requires more testing because you own the dependency, compiler and configuration decisions.
- Extract the OpenLiteSpeed source archive.
- Run
./build.sh; the documented build process uses it to handle dependencies, configuration and compilation. - Review
ols.confbefore installation so the resulting server settings are understood. - Run
./install.sh. - Use the default server root,
/usr/local/lsws, unless your controlled build changes it. - Start and verify the server:
/usr/local/lsws/bin/lswsctrl start
/usr/local/lsws/bin/lswsctrl statusThe default WebAdmin port remains 7080. Test the compiled server and its application configuration on a staging VPS before replacing a production instance.

Configure PHP after installation
Installing LSPHP supplies the PHP runtime, but a PHP site still needs a virtual host, document root and script handler configured in OpenLiteSpeed. The repository example places the executable at /usr/local/lsws/lsphp84/bin/lsphp; use that path when the WebAdmin configuration asks for the PHP binary for this installation.
Keep the PHP version aligned with the application’s requirements and the packages available for your operating-system release. A package can install successfully while an application still fails because a required extension is absent, the document root is wrong, or the handler points to a different PHP version. Test a small application-specific PHP check and remove diagnostic files after testing.

“Package openlitespeed has no installation candidate”
- Confirm the VPS release is in the supported matrix.
- Run the repository setup command again and read its output for a signing, network or distribution error.
- Refresh package metadata, then retry the distribution-appropriate install command.
- Do not substitute an unrelated third-party repository or mix packages from a different operating-system release.
The WebAdmin page times out
- Run
sudo /usr/local/lsws/bin/lswsctrl statusto confirm the process is running. - Check TCP 7080 in both the VPS firewall and the cloud firewall or security group.
- Use the VPS’s actual public IP or a DNS name that resolves to it.
- Check whether an upstream network policy blocks nonstandard administrative ports.
The password is rejected
Read the generated password file with appropriate privileges or reset it using sudo /usr/local/lsws/admin/misc/admpass.sh. Make sure the browser is reaching the intended VPS, especially when several servers share similar DNS names.

OpenLiteSpeed runs but PHP pages fail
- Verify that the LSPHP packages were installed for the same distribution family as OpenLiteSpeed.
- Confirm the configured executable is
/usr/local/lsws/lsphp84/bin/lsphpfor the documented LSPHP 8.4 example. - Check that every application-required extension is installed.
- Review the virtual-host and script-handler configuration for path and permission errors.
The service will not start after configuration changes
Recheck the edited configuration, inspect the OpenLiteSpeed logs under /usr/local/lsws, and return to the last known-good configuration if necessary. Make one change at a time so the failing setting is identifiable.

Upgrade and maintenance without breaking the installation
Keep the installation and upgrade methods consistent. For repository installations, upgrade OpenLiteSpeed with the package manager:
# Debian and Ubuntu
sudo apt-get upgrade openlitespeed
# CentOS-family distributions
sudo yum update openlitespeedThe official upgrade guidance warns against mixing binary and repository installation. A server installed from a binary archive should not later be overwritten with repository packages simply because that appears faster; choose one lifecycle and document it.
Use staging for version changes
Package availability and supported distribution versions are volatile. Pin or test versions on a staging VPS before applying production changes, and keep a rollback plan that includes the OpenLiteSpeed configuration, virtual-host data and application backup. After an upgrade, check the service status, WebAdmin access, PHP execution and representative application requests.
Keep operational records
- Record the operating-system release and architecture.
- Record whether the server was installed from the repository, one-click script, binary archive or source.
- Record the OpenLiteSpeed and LSPHP package versions.
- Record firewall changes, the WebAdmin port and the location of backups.
- Repeat upgrades in a maintenance window and monitor logs afterward.
Which method should you use?
Choose the repository procedure when you want the shortest repeatable path on Ubuntu, Debian or a CentOS-family VPS and intend to use normal package upgrades. Choose the one-click script only for a fresh machine where its complete software bundle is intentional. Choose a precompiled binary when you need a controlled archive-based installation, and choose a source build when custom compilation justifies the additional maintenance.
