Choose your Omeka edition before installing anything. Omeka S and Omeka Classic have different PHP, database, extension, and Apache requirements. A reliable VPS installation therefore follows this order: match the edition to a supported software stack, create a dedicated database, configure Apache rewrites and overrides, make Omeka’s writable directories accessible to the web server, complete the browser installer, and verify the PHP CLI path. If the site returns an HTTP 500 error, read the timestamped Apache and PHP logs first, then check Omeka’s own diagnostics instead of changing settings at random.
Choose Omeka S or Omeka Classic first
“Omeka” is not one interchangeable package. The current requirements differ enough that selecting the edition after provisioning the VPS can leave you with an unsupported PHP version or missing extensions.

Use the application version you intend to run as the authority for the software stack. For example, installing a PHP release that is acceptable to Classic does not make it acceptable to Omeka S 4.2, and enabling Omeka S extensions does not satisfy Classic’s mysqli and exif requirements.
When Omeka S is the better fit
Choose Omeka S when you need its current site architecture, modules, and themes. Plan for PHP 8.1 or later, a supported MySQL or MariaDB release, and Apache configuration that permits Omeka’s rewrite rules. PHP 8.4 support begins with Omeka S 4.2; do not infer that an earlier Omeka S release supports that PHP version.

When Omeka Classic is the better fit
Choose Classic when an existing site, plugin, or theme depends on the Classic application. Its documented baseline starts at PHP 7.1, MySQL 5.5.5, mysqli, exif, and ImageMagick. Classic 3.2.1’s requirements page says it supports PHP up to 8.5, but you should still match the exact Classic release to the PHP version you will actually install and maintain.
Prepare the VPS before uploading Omeka
Provision a Linux VPS with administrative access (root or an account with equivalent sudo privileges). The host must let you control Apache, PHP, the database server, filesystem ownership, and server logs. A managed plan is suitable only if it exposes those controls or its support team will apply the required settings.

- Install the PHP branch supported by your selected Omeka release and the required extensions listed in the comparison table.
- Install MySQL or MariaDB at a version supported by that release.
- Enable access to Apache’s error log and the PHP or PHP-FPM log. Their exact filesystem paths vary by Linux distribution and PHP integration method.
- Set the server’s time zone and clock correctly so log timestamps line up with the time a 500 response occurred.
Do not begin by uploading files into an unrelated web root and hoping the installer will correct the configuration. Decide whether Omeka will run at the domain root, a subdirectory, or a dedicated virtual host, then make Apache’s DocumentRoot and rewrite scope match that decision.
Create a dedicated database and database user
Use a separate database and user for each Omeka installation. Omeka S documentation specifically advises not reusing a database or prefix from another Omeka installation. Reusing credentials can mix tables, make upgrades unsafe, and turn a configuration typo into data loss.
- Log in to MySQL or MariaDB with an administrative account.
- Create a database with a clear name dedicated to this Omeka site.
- Create a database user with a strong, unique password.
- Grant that user the permissions required for the dedicated database.
- Record the database host, database name, username, password, and port if your server does not use the default.
- Test the credentials from the VPS before running the web installer.
For a local database, the host is often localhost, but do not assume that value: use the host that your database service and VPS configuration require. A database connection failure can produce a generic 500 page, so verify these values independently.
Install Omeka S on the VPS
Download and extract the release
Download the Omeka S release that matches the PHP and database versions you selected, then extract it on the VPS or upload the extracted directory. Place it in the site’s document root or in the intended subdirectory. Preserve the hidden .htaccess file; an upload method that omits hidden files can break routing even when every visible file is present.

Configure config/database.ini
Before uploading or before opening the installer, edit Omeka S’s config/database.ini with the database name, user, password, and host. Keep the file readable by the application but do not expose it through a publicly downloadable location. A typo in any one value can prevent the application from connecting and commonly appears as a server-side error rather than a helpful browser message.
Set ownership and writable directories
The Apache service account must be able to write to Omeka’s files/ directory. Set ownership or group permissions according to your distribution’s Apache account, and avoid making the entire application tree world-writable. If you use PHP-FPM, confirm that the PHP-FPM pool user and Apache’s access rules agree with the ownership you set.
Open the browser installer
- Point the domain or subdirectory at the extracted Omeka S directory.
- Visit the installation’s
/adminURL in a browser. - Enter the site and administrator details requested by the setup screens.
- When prompted for database information, use the values already placed in
config/database.ini. - Finish setup, sign in, and load both an administrative page and a public page.
If the installer itself returns 500, stop entering values and inspect the logs described below. Repeatedly refreshing a failed installer does not reveal the underlying PHP, rewrite, permission, or database cause.
Verify the PHP CLI path
Open Omeka S’s System Information page after installation and inspect the configured PHP CLI path. Omeka S uses the PHP CLI for background jobs; an automatically detected path that points to a nonexistent binary or to an incompatible PHP version can leave web pages working while jobs fail. Set the path manually to the supported PHP executable when autodetection is wrong, then rerun a background task to confirm the correction.
Install Omeka Classic on the VPS
Place the Classic files and preserve .htaccess
Download and extract the Classic release into the intended document root or subdirectory. Include the hidden .htaccess file. Classic relies on Apache rewrite behavior, so an incomplete upload can look like a PHP problem when the real issue is that Apache is serving the wrong route or ignoring the rewrite rules.
Connect Classic to its database
Use the database name, host, username, and password created for this installation in the Classic setup screens or configuration process. Do not point Classic at an existing Omeka database or reuse another installation’s table prefix. Check the credentials directly against MySQL or MariaDB if the installer cannot connect.

Confirm Classic’s required PHP features
Before opening the installer, confirm that the active web PHP runtime—not only the command-line runtime—has mysqli and exif enabled. ImageMagick is also required by Classic’s documented requirements. It is possible for php in a shell to report one version while Apache or PHP-FPM runs another, so check the runtime that serves the site.
Complete and test the installer
- Visit the Classic installation URL in a browser.
- Complete the site, administrator, and database fields.
- Sign in to the administrative dashboard.
- Open a public item page, an administrative page, and an upload form.
- Confirm that an uploaded file is written under Omeka’s files area.
Configure Apache rewrites and AllowOverride
Clean Omeka URLs depend on Apache rewrite support. Enable mod_rewrite for the server, ensure the virtual host or directory block covering Omeka permits overrides with AllowOverride All, and verify that the application’s .htaccess file is present. The exact command used to enable a module depends on the Linux distribution; on systems that provide an a2enmod utility, the usual operation is to enable rewrite and reload Apache.

The important checks are configuration checks, not a particular command:
mod_rewriteis loaded by the Apache instance serving this virtual host.- The Omeka directory is inside the
Directoryor virtual-host scope whereAllowOverride Allapplies. - The uploaded
.htaccessis readable by Apache and was not dropped by the transfer tool. - Apache’s configuration test passes before you reload or restart the service.
- The document root points to the directory that actually contains Omeka’s entry files.
Do not set AllowOverride on an unrelated directory and assume it covers Omeka. Apache applies directory configuration by path. A rewrite rule can therefore be correct while still being ignored because the request is outside the directory block where overrides are allowed.
How to diagnose an HTTP 500 error
HTTP 500 means the server could not complete the request; it does not identify the failing component. Start with the exact time of the failed request and read the server logs before changing configuration. The Omeka forum’s guidance is straightforward: an Apache issue should appear in Apache’s log, while a PHP problem may appear in the PHP log and sometimes in Apache’s log as well.
- Reproduce the error once and note the UTC or server-local timestamp, URL, HTTP method, and whether the failure affects every page or only one action.
- Open Apache’s error log and find entries at that timestamp.
- Open the PHP or PHP-FPM log used by the active web runtime and look for the corresponding fatal error, uncaught exception, memory error, or startup warning.
- Inspect Omeka’s application diagnostics and logs.
- Correct one identified cause, reload the affected page, and check the logs again.
- After the fix, disable verbose error display on the public site.
Do not treat a blank page, a browser cache, or a generic “Internal Server Error” page as evidence of a particular cause. The timestamped log entry is the reliable starting point.

Fix the most common Omeka 500 causes
1. PHP version or extension mismatch
Compare the PHP version used by Apache or PHP-FPM with the Omeka edition and release you installed. For Omeka S 4.2, verify PHP 8.1 or newer plus PDO, pdo_mysql, mbstring, and xml. For Classic 3.2, verify PHP 7.1 or newer plus mysqli and exif, along with ImageMagick. A command-line check alone is insufficient if Apache is using a different PHP module or FPM pool.
Typical log clues include an undefined class or function, a missing extension, a syntax error caused by an unsupported PHP release, or a failure while loading a PHP module. Install the missing extension for the active PHP branch, restart or reload the relevant PHP and Apache services, and retest. If the application release and installed PHP cannot be reconciled, use a supported PHP branch rather than forcing the application to run on an untested one.
2. Apache rewrite or override configuration
When the home page loads but clean routes, administrative links, or item pages fail, check rewrites before changing PHP. Confirm mod_rewrite, AllowOverride All, the correct document root, and the presence of .htaccess. A missing or ignored .htaccess can produce broken routes and related server errors even though PHP itself is healthy.
After editing Apache configuration, run its configuration test, reload Apache, and reproduce the same URL. If the Apache log reports a directive is not allowed, the directory block is still not permitting the override needed by Omeka.
3. Incorrect database settings or permissions
For Omeka S, recheck config/database.ini. For Classic, recheck the values entered during setup or in its configuration. Verify all five connection details: host, database name, username, password, and port where applicable. Then confirm that the database user has access to that database and that the database service is running.
Do not “fix” a connection error by granting unrestricted privileges to a shared account. Correct the dedicated user’s permissions and keep each installation isolated.

4. Filesystem permissions
Ensure Apache can read the application and write Omeka’s files/ directory. If Omeka needs to write logs, the relevant log location must also be writable by the web server. A permission denied entry in Apache or PHP logs points to ownership, group membership, directory traversal permissions, or a security policy—not to a missing PHP extension.
Grant the narrowest write access that works. Making the entire VPS web root writable by every user can hide the immediate symptom while creating a serious security problem.
5. Invalid PHP CLI path in Omeka S
If web pages work but background jobs fail, inspect the PHP CLI path on Omeka S’s System Information page. Autodetection may select a binary that was removed, belongs to another PHP version, or is not executable by the account running jobs. Set the path manually to the supported PHP CLI binary and test a job. Keep the web PHP and CLI PHP aligned unless you have a deliberate reason to separate them.
6. Application diagnostics are hidden or disabled
Omeka Classic can expose more detail by setting SetEnv APPLICATION_ENV development or enabling error display in .htaccess. It can also write to application/logs/errors.log when log.errors is enabled. Use these options briefly while diagnosing a controlled request, because displaying stack traces on a public site can reveal paths, credentials, and implementation details.
Omeka S provides developer-style error tracking through its error-logging configuration. Enable the appropriate diagnostic setting, reproduce the error, read the resulting details, and then return the site to a non-verbose production configuration.

A repeatable recovery checklist
- Identify the exact Omeka edition and release.
- Compare the active web PHP version and extensions with that release’s requirements.
- Confirm the database server version is supported.
- Check that Apache serves the intended document root.
- Confirm
mod_rewrite,AllowOverride Allwhere required, and a present.htaccess. - Verify the dedicated database credentials by testing them directly.
- Check Apache’s read access and write access to Omeka’s
files/directory. - Read Apache and PHP/PHP-FPM logs at the failure timestamp.
- Read Omeka’s own logs or temporary developer diagnostics.
- For Omeka S, verify the PHP CLI path and background jobs.
- Retest the original failing URL after one targeted change.
- Turn off verbose error display and remove temporary diagnostic settings.
What a maintainable VPS setup looks like
A dependable Omeka VPS is less about a particular provider than about control and observability. You need a supported Linux environment, administrative access to Apache and PHP, a dedicated database, routine backups, writable storage for Omeka files, and access to the logs that explain failures. Before committing to a VPS plan, confirm that you can select the required PHP branch, install extensions, enable rewrite support, change virtual-host settings, and retrieve Apache and PHP logs.
Keep a short deployment record containing the Omeka edition and release, PHP and database versions, enabled extensions, virtual-host document root, database name and user, ownership of writable directories, and the PHP CLI path. That record makes future upgrades and 500-error investigations reproducible without exposing database passwords.
Final decision: fix the cause, not the status code
Installing Omeka successfully on a VPS depends on matching the edition to its supported stack and completing the Apache, database, and filesystem configuration that the browser installer cannot repair for you. When a 500 appears, the status code is only a symptom. The timestamped Apache and PHP logs, followed by Omeka’s edition-specific diagnostics, identify whether the problem is PHP, rewrites, credentials, permissions, or the CLI runtime. Correct that underlying condition, verify the original request, and then restore production-safe error handling.
