Install Nukkit by choosing the correct server family, installing its required Java version, placing the server JAR in a dedicated folder, and launching it once to generate its files. To add a plugin, copy a compatible Nukkit-family .jar directly into that server’s plugins folder and restart. Do not mix ecosystems: Cloudburst requires Java 17 or newer and does not load Nukkit plugins, while the Nukkit project identifies Endstone as the successor to legacy Nukkit.
Choose the right Bedrock server before installing anything
“Nukkit” can refer to more than one generation of Bedrock server software. Your Java version, download, configuration files and plugins all depend on the server line you select. The legacy CloudburstMC/Nukkit project describes Nukkit as Java-based server software for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. Its installation guide lists Java 8 or newer. Cloudburst is a separate server line with a separate plugin ecosystem and a Java 17-or-newer requirement. The Nukkit project site now presents Endstone as the next generation and official successor to legacy Nukkit.

Before downloading anything, identify the Bedrock version your players will use and verify that the selected server build and every plugin support it. A plugin that worked on an older Nukkit build can fail after a server update even when the JAR still appears in the correct folder.
What you need for a Nukkit installation
- A computer or virtual machine that can run the selected Java version.
- The server JAR from the selected project’s official release or build location.
- A dedicated, writable directory for the server. Keeping worlds, configuration, logs and plugins together makes backups and rollbacks practical.
- Permission to open the Bedrock UDP port on the host firewall and, for remote players, on the router or cloud security group.
- A compatible plugin JAR and any dependencies listed by that plugin.
Do not rename a server JAR in the launch command unless you also change the command to match. The basic command shown by the Nukkit repository is java -jar nukkit-1.0-SNAPSHOT.jar; current builds may have a different filename.

Install Java and create the server directory
Match Java to the server family
Install Java 8 or a newer compatible runtime for legacy Nukkit. Install Java 17 or newer for Cloudburst. Do not assume that “newer” is always interchangeable: a server build can require a particular Java major version or expose incompatibilities when launched with another one. If you are moving from legacy Nukkit to Cloudburst, change the Java runtime and the plugin set as one migration rather than copying the old installation wholesale.
Create a clean directory
Make a directory used only by this server, such as C:NukkitServer on Windows or ~/nukkit-server on Linux and macOS. Place the downloaded server JAR directly inside it. Avoid running the JAR from a downloads folder that is automatically cleaned or from a directory where several server instances share the same files.

On a machine with multiple Java installations, check which runtime the command line resolves before starting. The launch scripts below use the java executable found on your system path. If that command reports an unexpected major version, correct the path or your environment before troubleshooting Nukkit itself.
Start Nukkit on Windows
Create a reusable batch file
- Open Notepad in the server directory.
- Enter the following lines, replacing the JAR filename if your build uses another name:
java -jar nukkit-1.0-SNAPSHOT.jar pause - Save the file beside the JAR as
start.bat. In Notepad’s Save dialog, choose “All files” so it does not becomestart.bat.txt. - Double-click
start.bat. Thepauseline keeps the console window open if Java exits, allowing you to read the error.
The first successful launch may ask you to accept terms or may print setup prompts before creating the server files. Follow the prompt shown by your build. Keep the console visible during this first run so you can see the exact Java or permission error if startup stops.
Connect locally
For a server and client on the same Windows computer, the official guide documents connecting to 127.0.0.1. Windows can block loopback access for some Bedrock configurations; if the client cannot reach a running local server, apply the loopback-exemption procedure in the official Nukkit guide, then retry. This is different from opening the server to the public internet.

Start Nukkit on Linux
Create and run the shell script
- Change to the directory containing the JAR:
cd ~/nukkit-server - Create
start.shwith this content:#!/bin/sh java -jar nukkit-1.0-SNAPSHOT.jar - Make it executable:
chmod +x start.sh - Start the server:
./start.sh
Run the server from its own directory. Nukkit creates relative paths such as plugins, worlds and configuration files relative to the working directory; launching the same JAR from another directory can make you think files or plugins are missing when they were created elsewhere.
Keep the process manageable
For a test server, an open terminal is sufficient. For a persistent deployment, use the process-management method appropriate to your Linux distribution or hosting platform and ensure the server directory is on persistent storage. Whatever wrapper you use, preserve the normal console input path so you can stop Nukkit cleanly instead of killing the Java process.
Start Nukkit on macOS
Use a .command launcher
- Place
start.commandbeside the server JAR. - Enter:
#!/bin/sh cd "$(dirname "$0")" java -jar nukkit-1.0-SNAPSHOT.jar - Make it executable in Terminal from that directory:
chmod a+x start.command - Double-click the file in Finder or run
./start.commandfrom Terminal.
The cd line is important when launching from Finder because it changes to the script’s own directory before Java starts. Without it, Nukkit can create its plugins, worlds and configuration files in an unexpected working directory.
Complete the first-run setup
Let Nukkit generate its files
The first run creates the required directories and configuration files. Stop the server cleanly after generation has completed. Do not copy a plugin into a directory that does not yet belong to the active server instance; first confirm that the expected server folder contains the generated files.
Edit the two core configuration files
Review server.properties and nukkit.yml with a plain-text editor while the server is stopped. Set the server name, game settings, permissions and network values appropriate for your world. Keep a backup of the original files before making major changes so you can restore a known-good configuration.

server.properties: player-facing server and gameplay values, including the network settings exposed by your build.nukkit.yml: Nukkit-specific behavior and server configuration.
Save the files, then start the server again and read the startup output. A malformed value or indentation error can stop startup or cause a setting to be ignored. Change one setting at a time when diagnosing a problem so the console output remains attributable.
Add a Nukkit plugin correctly
Verify the plugin before copying it
Download a plugin JAR that explicitly targets your Nukkit-family server and the server version you are running. Check its declared dependencies, required permissions and supported Bedrock or server versions. A plugin made for Cloudburst is not a Nukkit plugin merely because both servers use Java and Bedrock; Cloudburst’s documentation explicitly says it does not support Nukkit plugins.
Put the JAR in the root plugins folder
- Stop the server if it is running.
- Open the active server directory—the same directory from which your script launches the JAR.
- Open or create
plugins. - Copy the downloaded
.jardirectly into that folder. The path should look like<server-directory>/plugins/ExamplePlugin.jar, notplugins/ExamplePlugin/ExamplePlugin.jar. - Start Nukkit again. Plugin discovery and loading occur during startup.
- Read the console for a successful enable message or a stack trace naming the failure.
The official Nukkit guide’s procedure is to drop the downloaded JAR into the server’s plugins folder and restart. Do not expect a running server to activate a newly copied JAR automatically unless a specific, compatible management tool documents that behavior; a full restart is the reliable activation step.
Know what the plugin can provide
The official guide describes Pokkit as limited Spigot compatibility and cites MobPlugin for mob AI and spawning. Treat these as examples of different plugin purposes, not as evidence that arbitrary Spigot plugins will work. Read each plugin’s own compatibility notes and install its dependencies before judging it from a single failed launch.
Confirm players can reach the server
Local testing
Test from the host first. On Windows, use 127.0.0.1 and apply the documented loopback exemption if the Bedrock client cannot connect despite a running server. This test separates a Nukkit or plugin startup problem from a router or firewall problem.

Remote access and UDP
Bedrock connections use UDP. Permit the port configured in your server settings through the host firewall and any router or cloud firewall. The repository’s Docker example publishes UDP port 19132; if you use that example, publish the same port on the host and direct clients to the reachable address. If you choose another port, publish and advertise that port consistently.
Opening a port on the host is not enough when the server is behind a home router or cloud security group. Forward the selected UDP port to the machine running Nukkit, and avoid exposing administration interfaces that are not needed for player connections.
Choose a deployment method
The same Nukkit JAR can be run with a local script, a game-server control panel, Docker, or Kubernetes. The right choice depends less on the Java command than on how you will update, back up and expose UDP traffic.

Whichever method you choose, keep the plugin JAR, server JAR, configuration and world data versioned or backed up together. A rollback that restores only the executable while leaving a migrated world or changed configuration can produce a second, unrelated failure.

The plugin does not appear at all
- Confirm the file ends in
.jarand is directly inside the active server’s rootpluginsdirectory. - Check that your launch script starts the directory where you copied the JAR; relative paths follow the process working directory.
- Restart the server after copying the file.
- Make sure the download is a plugin JAR, not a ZIP archive, source package or documentation file.
The console reports an unsupported class or Java version
Check the Java major version first. Legacy Nukkit documentation lists Java 8 or above, while Cloudburst documentation lists Java 17 or above. Then verify that the plugin itself supports that server line. Changing Java without checking the plugin’s target can replace one startup error with another.

The console shows missing dependencies
Read the complete stack trace and the plugin’s dependency declaration. Install the required dependency JAR in the same plugins folder, if the plugin documentation says it is needed, and restart. Do not guess at dependency names or download similarly named files from unrelated projects.
The plugin is present but features do nothing
Check the plugin’s generated configuration, permission nodes and startup messages. Confirm that the account or group testing the feature has the required permission. If the plugin requires a particular world setting or another plugin, satisfy that requirement before changing unrelated server settings.
You are running Cloudburst
Do not expect a legacy Nukkit JAR to load. Cloudburst has its own plugin ecosystem, and its official installation guidance states that Nukkit plugins are unsupported. Either obtain a plugin built for Cloudburst or choose the Nukkit-family server for which the existing plugin was written.
Players cannot connect
- Test locally with
127.0.0.1before testing from another network. - On Windows, follow the official loopback-exemption procedure when local Bedrock access is blocked.
- Confirm the server is listening on the port configured in
server.properties. - For Docker, verify the UDP publication (the documented example uses
19132/udp). - Open the same UDP port in the host firewall, router and cloud security group as applicable.
A safe update and recovery routine
- Stop Nukkit cleanly from its console.
- Copy the entire server directory to backup storage, including worlds, both configuration files and the
pluginsdirectory. - Record the current server JAR, Java major version and plugin filenames.
- Read the target server build’s compatibility notes and verify that each plugin has a compatible release.
- Update one component at a time, starting the server after each change and saving the console output.
- If startup or gameplay fails, restore the previous JAR and the matching configuration and plugin backup instead of mixing files from different versions.
This sequence gives you a known restore point and makes the first failing change identifiable. It is especially important when moving between legacy Nukkit, Cloudburst and Endstone, because those are different server lines rather than interchangeable labels.
When to choose a different server line
Choose legacy Nukkit when you specifically need a Nukkit plugin and the project’s documented Java and Bedrock compatibility fit your deployment. Choose Cloudburst when you want its current server line and are prepared to use Cloudburst plugins with Java 17 or newer. Investigate Endstone when starting a new deployment and you want the successor identified by the Nukkit project; follow its current requirements and plugin documentation rather than assuming legacy JAR compatibility.
Once the server line is settled, the repeatable pattern is simple: install the required Java version, launch the JAR from its dedicated directory, complete the first-run configuration, place compatible plugin JARs directly in plugins, restart, and use the startup log to resolve errors before inviting players.
