There is no documented, supported way to install and run Nintendo 3DS software on an ordinary R36S running ArkOS. The R36S manual lists Nintendo DS, but not Nintendo 3DS. PortMaster installs Linux game ports, not Nintendo 3DS games, and its own compatibility guidance says that a port working on one handheld may not work on another.
You can still use a safe workflow for documented R36S ports and protect your system while investigating experiments. The key is to treat any supposed 3DS emulator or “3DS port” for the R36S as unverified, never overwrite your only card, and never assume that a PortMaster package converts a commercial 3DS game into a compatible R36S application.
What the R36S and PortMaster officially support
The R36S is identified in PortMaster’s supported-handheld information as a 480×320 device using the RK3326 chip and ArkOS. That hardware and firmware combination is designed around a collection of emulators and Linux game ports, not the Nintendo 3DS platform.
The R36S manual’s compatibility table includes Nintendo DS. Nintendo 3DS is a separate system with different hardware, software requirements and input features, so DS support should not be interpreted as 3DS support. A game that runs through a DS emulator does not become a 3DS game simply because both systems are handheld Nintendo consoles.

PortMaster is a graphical tool for downloading and installing Linux handheld game ports. It is not a general-purpose emulator manager and it does not turn an original Nintendo 3DS title into a native Linux port. PortMaster also warns that not every port runs on every supported handheld. The R36S entry confirms that the device is in the supported-handheld ecosystem, but each individual package still has to identify its own device requirements.

Can the R36S run Nintendo 3DS games?
No supported answer has been documented for the ordinary R36S/ArkOS setup. The available R36S documentation does not provide a maintained Nintendo 3DS emulator, a standard 3DS-port package, or a normal installation procedure for 3DS software.
That conclusion is narrower than saying that no community experiment could ever exist. Unofficial projects may appear, change names or target a particular clone, but an experiment is not the same as a maintained package with verified R36S compatibility. Without documentation for your exact hardware and ArkOS build, you cannot safely predict boot behavior, controls, graphics, speed, save handling or stability.
The R36S’s 480×320 screen and RK3326 platform are also important practical constraints. Nintendo 3DS software was designed for a system with two screens and hardware features that an R36S does not reproduce directly. Even if an experimental emulator starts, that does not establish that games are playable or that the installation is safe. Do not use a reported boot video or a forum claim as proof of general compatibility.
Will PortMaster install Nintendo 3DS games?
PortMaster will not automatically install commercial Nintendo 3DS games. Its role is to install Linux ports packaged for supported handhelds. A package may require legally obtained original game data, but that requirement is defined by the individual port; PortMaster does not supply copyrighted game files for you.

When a package description says that a game-data file is required, obtain that data from a source you are legally entitled to use and follow the package’s stated folder and filename requirements. Do not copy a random “3DS ROM” into /roms/ports and expect PortMaster to convert it. A Nintendo 3DS ROM and a Linux port’s game-data files are different things.
Why attempting an unverified 3DS installation is risky
Unsupported software can damage your working setup
An unofficial emulator, launcher or script may replace files, add incompatible libraries or alter startup settings. If the change is made directly to your only microSD card, diagnosing the failure becomes harder and recovery may require rebuilding the card.

Clones and alternate R36S models may differ
The PortMaster entry describes an R36S-class RK3326 handheld, but products sold under similar names can use different boards, screens or firmware images. Confirm the exact device and ArkOS build before applying instructions written for another model. A package that works on one R36S variant is not automatically suitable for another.
Two-screen behavior is not guaranteed
3DS software expects a dual-screen interface and specialized controls. The R36S has a single 480×320 display. An experimental project would need its own method for presenting both screens and mapping controls; that behavior cannot be assumed from DS support or from the existence of a PortMaster menu entry.
Legal and data requirements still apply
Installing an emulator does not grant permission to download commercial games. Keep the legal source of any game data clear, and follow the license terms of open-source ports and their required assets.

Safe preparation before changing an R36S
1. Identify the exact hardware and firmware
- Check the handheld’s model, board information and installed ArkOS build.
- Confirm that the device matches the R36S-class RK3326 hardware described by PortMaster, rather than assuming that a similar-looking clone is identical.
- Record the current setup, including which microSD card is used for the operating system and which card contains ROMs.
If you cannot identify the firmware or card layout, stop before installing experimental software. Instructions that depend on a particular ArkOS arrangement may point to the wrong partition on another build.
2. Make a complete backup
- Shut the R36S down normally. Do not remove the card while the device is writing data.
- Remove the microSD card and connect it to a computer with a USB microSD reader.
- Create a full card image when your computer’s imaging software supports it. Also copy accessible files so you have a convenient way to restore saves and configuration.
- Preserve the
BIOSfolder. The R36S manual specifically advises backing up the original card, with particular attention to BIOS files. - Label the original card and keep it untouched as a rollback copy. Perform experiments on a separate working card whenever possible.
A file copy is useful for individual ROMs and saves, while a full image is the more complete recovery option because it preserves the card’s partition layout. Whichever method you use, verify that the backup can be opened before making changes.
3. Use dependable storage
The manual recommends replacing supplied cards with branded Kingston or Samsung cards. A reliable replacement reduces the chance that an installation failure is actually a failing or corrupt card. The recommendation does not make unsupported 3DS software compatible; it simply gives you a more dependable storage foundation.
4. Understand the EASYROMS partition
ArkOS uses an EASYROMS partition for ROMs and BIOS files. Keep the folders already present. ArkOS documentation warns against deleting existing folders or their contents because emulator dependencies may be stored there.
- Add files only to the folder intended by the emulator or port instructions.
- Do not rename system folders to make an experimental package appear in a menu.
- Do not replace BIOS files with files from an unknown source.
- Eject the card safely from the computer before putting it back in the handheld.
Installing a documented PortMaster port safely
This procedure is for a port that explicitly supports your R36S/ArkOS build. It is not a Nintendo 3DS installation method.

1. Open PortMaster on supported ArkOS builds
- Boot the R36S and open Options > Tools > PortMaster.
- Read the package information before selecting Install. Check the listed handheld support and any required game data.
- If PortMaster is not present, do not download a random replacement script. The ArkOS documentation describes placing the PortMaster folder under
/roms/tools, or under the corresponding second-card path where that layout is used. Follow the documentation for your exact build and keep your backup available.
2. Install only the package you can identify
- Select a package whose description names the R36S or your exact supported device family.
- Review whether the package is a native Linux port, what original assets it needs and where those assets belong.
- Install the package through PortMaster when possible. Manual copying should follow the package’s own instructions rather than a generic folder guess.
- PortMaster packages normally reside under
/roms/ports. Do not put a Nintendo 3DS ROM there unless a specific, documented port explicitly requires a file with that name and format.
3. Add legally obtained game data
Some ports contain the executable but require original game data. Copy only the files identified by the package documentation, preserving exact names and locations. If the package does not explain how to use your data, treat that as a reason to pause, not as an invitation to download an unverified bundle.
4. Test without destroying your rollback option
- Boot the port and check the controls, graphics, sound, save creation and exit behavior.
- Keep saves and configuration inside the port’s own folder unless its instructions specify another location.
- If the port fails, remove only the newly added package and its associated data. Do not delete shared ArkOS folders or BIOS files.
- Restore the backed-up image if the failure affects the menu, boot process or other systems.
How to evaluate a claimed R36S 3DS solution
If you encounter a community project claiming to run 3DS software, use the following checks before putting it on a card you care about:
- Exact-device support: Does the documentation name your R36S variant, RK3326 board and ArkOS build?
- Software type: Is it a native Linux port, an emulator, a launcher or merely a configuration file? Those categories have different requirements.
- Game-data source: Does it explain the legally obtained original data required, without bundling commercial files?
- Reversibility: Can you remove the package without replacing system files, and does it provide an uninstall procedure?
- Hardware load: Does it document how the 480×320 single-screen device handles the 3DS interface and controls?
- Maintenance: Is there a current release, clear installation documentation and reports from the same hardware, rather than a single unrepeatable demonstration?
Failing any of these checks does not prove that the project is malicious or impossible. It does mean that presenting it as a safe, standard R36S installation would overstate what is known.

Use the R36S for documented systems and ports
Choose emulators and ports listed for the R36S and your ArkOS build. This keeps the installation inside the device’s documented ecosystem and lets you use the backup, EASYROMS layout and PortMaster workflow described above.

Use hardware with documented 3DS support
If your goal is specifically to play Nintendo 3DS software, select a platform whose manufacturer or maintained emulator project documents 3DS support, dual-screen handling and the required controls. The R36S manual’s DS entry is not evidence that the device meets those requirements.

Keep experiments separate
If you still want to investigate a community experiment, use a spare microSD card made from a verified backup. Never test it first on the original supplied card or on the card containing your only saves. Record what you changed so that you can undo it cleanly.
Failure symptoms and recovery
The PortMaster option is missing
Verify that you are using a supported ArkOS build and inspect the expected /roms/tools location on the correct card. Do not move folders between cards until you have confirmed the layout. Restore the backup if a manual installation changes the menu or boot behavior.
A port appears but will not start
Recheck the package’s device support and required game data. Confirm filenames and locations exactly, then remove only that port and its added files if it still fails. PortMaster’s general device support does not guarantee that every package runs on the R36S.

Power it off, remove the working card and return to the untouched original or restore the verified card image. Do not repeatedly interrupt startup or delete folders from the EASYROMS partition in an attempt to repair the problem.
Games disappeared after reorganizing files
Restore the original folder names and contents from the backup. ArkOS dependencies can be stored in existing folders, so a “cleanup” that removes apparently unused directories can break more than the one game you intended to change.
Bottom line for Nintendo 3DS on the R36S
For a normal R36S running ArkOS, there is no documented, supported Nintendo 3DS emulator or standard 3DS-port installation path. Nintendo DS support in the manual and PortMaster’s Linux-port functionality do not change that limitation.
The safe approach is to back up the original card, preserve the EASYROMS and BIOS structure, use reliable storage, install only individually documented PortMaster packages and keep any experiment on a separate card. Treat an unverified 3DS claim as an experiment rather than a guaranteed installation, and use hardware with explicit 3DS support when 3DS compatibility is the actual requirement.
