Windows 10 may already include .NET Framework 4.8, particularly on newer feature updates. If a program reports that .NET Framework 4.8 is missing, first check the installed release number. If version 528040 or higher is present, .NET Framework 4.8 or a later 4.x release is installed and the problem may be with the application rather than the framework.
For systems that need it, the safest method is to download the official Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 Runtime installer and run it with administrator privileges. The runtime is enough to run applications; developers who need to compile .NET Framework projects need the separate Developer Pack.
Before installing .NET Framework 4.8
.NET Framework 4.8 is a Windows-only runtime for applications built with the .NET Framework 4.x family. It is an in-place update: installing 4.8 replaces older 4.x versions rather than installing a completely separate runtime.

Check whether .NET Framework 4.8 is already installed
Using PowerShell
- Right-click Start and select Windows PowerShell or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Run this command:
$release = Get-ItemPropertyValue -Path 'HKLM:SOFTWAREMicrosoftNET Framework SetupNDPv4Full' -Name Release
$releaseThe number returned is the .NET Framework release value. A value of 528040 or higher indicates .NET Framework 4.8 or a later 4.x release. On Windows 10, a value of 528040 is commonly reported for .NET Framework 4.8. Microsoft’s release values can differ by operating-system version, so the release number is more useful than looking for a folder named “4.8.”
Using Command Prompt
Open Command Prompt and run:
reg query "HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftNET Framework SetupNDPv4Full" /v ReleaseIf the command reports that the key or value does not exist, the full .NET Framework 4.x runtime is not installed in the usual registry location.
Download the .NET Framework 4.8 Runtime
- Go to Microsoft’s official .NET Framework 4.8 download page.
- Under the Runtime section, choose Download .NET Framework 4.8 Runtime.
- Save the installer. The web installer is normally named
ndp48-web.exe.
Use the Microsoft download page rather than a third-party download site. Do not download the Developer Pack unless you are developing or compiling .NET Framework applications. The Developer Pack includes targeting packs and build-time reference assemblies; it is not necessary for simply running an existing application.

Install .NET Framework 4.8 with the web installer
- Close applications that are currently running.
- Open the folder containing
ndp48-web.exe. - Right-click the file and select Run as administrator.
- If User Account Control asks whether to allow the installer to make changes, select Yes.
- Accept the license terms.
- Select Install.
- Wait while the installer downloads the required files and applies the update.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
The web installer needs internet access during setup. A corporate proxy, firewall, antivirus product, or restricted Windows Update configuration can prevent it from downloading its payload.

Install using the offline installer
Use the offline installer when you need to install .NET Framework 4.8 on several computers, when the target PC has unreliable internet access, or when the web installer fails during its download phase.
- Open Microsoft’s .NET Framework 4.8 download page.
- Under the Runtime section, download the Offline installer. The file is commonly named
NDP48-x86-x64-AllOS-ENU.exe. - Copy the downloaded file to the Windows 10 computer, if necessary.
- Right-click it, select Run as administrator, and complete the installation wizard.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
The offline installer is much larger than ndp48-web.exe, but it contains the installation payload instead of retrieving it during setup. It is still tied to the supported Windows versions; it is not a way to install .NET Framework 4.8 on an unsupported operating system.
Install silently from an elevated command prompt
For scripting or deployment, open Command Prompt as an administrator, change to the folder containing the installer, and run:

NDP48-x86-x64-AllOS-ENU.exe /quietCheck the process exit code after a deployment. A successful installation commonly returns 0; 3010 generally means the installation succeeded but Windows must be restarted. Test the release registry value again after restarting.
What to do when setup says .NET Framework 4.8 is already installed
This message is usually not an error. Because .NET Framework 4.x versions are in-place updates, the installer will not install a second copy of 4.8 over an equal or newer release.
Check the release value using PowerShell. If it is 528040 or higher, try these steps:

- Restart Windows.
- Run Windows Update and install pending updates.
- Repair or reinstall the application that reported the missing framework.
- Install the application’s current version, if one is available.
Do not remove a newer .NET Framework 4.x version just to install an older 4.x release. Applications targeting .NET Framework 4.5 through 4.8 generally use the installed 4.x runtime, subject to the application’s compatibility requirements.

Common installation errors

Repair Windows components if setup repeatedly fails
If Windows servicing is damaged, repair the component store and system files from an elevated Command Prompt:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc.exe /scannowRun the commands separately and wait for each one to finish. Restart Windows afterward, then retry the .NET Framework installer. These commands repair Windows files; they do not replace the .NET Framework installer.
For additional installation details, review the .NET Framework setup logs in the user’s temporary folder. Press Windows key + R, enter %temp%, and look for files whose names begin with dd_NDP48 or similar .NET setup prefixes.
