To install MPC-HC, download it from the official MPC-HC project’s releases page, choose the latest stable release, run the installer, and complete its prompts. On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Default apps, then assign MPC-HC to each video extension you want it to open. Windows manages these associations by file type, so selecting MPC-HC once does not necessarily change every video format.
At the project’s October 13, 2026 release listing, the stable version was MPC-HC 2.8.3. A separate development build was listed, but it is intended for testing rather than a normal everyday installation.
What MPC-HC is and which version to install
MPC-HC (Media Player Classic – Home Cinema) is free, open-source Windows software for playing audio and video. There is no hardware purchase or subscription required to complete this setup. The project documents support for Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11. This guide uses the Windows 11 settings layout; Microsoft documents the same Default apps area for Windows 10, although labels and screen arrangement can vary slightly.

Version 2.8.3’s notes list MPC Video Renderer 0.10.8.2600, MediaInfo DLL 26.10, a Windows 11-style options and menu theme, and additional stability and small fixes. Release listings can change, so check the project page again if you install at a later date. A newer date on a development build does not make it the recommended everyday version; choose the item explicitly marked stable.
Use only the official project release page rather than an unverified mirror. The project’s documentation also describes support for formats and functions including HEVC/H.265, VVC/H.266, AV1, AC4, subtitles, playback-speed controls, and resume position. Those capabilities are available after installation; you do not need to configure them before making MPC-HC your default player.
Choose an installation route
The MPC-HC project describes its own installer as basic and also recommends an optional K-Lite Codec Pack route for people who want a bundled setup with additional configuration. Neither route requires a hardware purchase. The important choice is whether you want only MPC-HC or a package that also installs selected codec and playback components.

K-Lite is optional, not a prerequisite for MPC-HC. If you want only the player and prefer the fewest additional components, use the standalone release. If you want the project’s bundled configuration route or specifically need madVR, review the K-Lite choices during setup. Standard is the project’s general recommendation; Full is not required merely to play ordinary files.
Whichever route you choose, you can still use Windows’ Default apps page afterward. Association choices made by an installer are useful starting points, but Windows remains the place to audit the final association for each extension.
Prepare before installing
- Confirm that you are installing on a supported Windows edition. The project lists Windows 7 through Windows 11; the default-association instructions below focus on Windows 11.
- Decide which video formats you actually want MPC-HC to open. Common examples include MP4, MKV, AVI, MOV, and WebM, but assign only the extensions you use.
- Close other media players while installing. This avoids confusing which program is currently handling a file and makes the final association check easier.
- Use the stable release unless you are deliberately testing a development build. Development builds can change more frequently and are not the normal recommendation for an everyday system.
- Have a sample file available for every extension you plan to change. Testing an actual file is more useful than assuming an association worked because a setting appeared in a list.
You do not need to uninstall another media player before installing MPC-HC. Installing it adds another available app; changing the default for a particular extension is a separate Windows decision. This lets you keep a different player for formats or workflows you prefer.
Install MPC-HC from the official release page
1. Open the project’s releases page
Go to the official MPC-HC project releases page. Locate the release marked stable and choose version 2.8.3 if that is still the current stable listing. Do not select the separately listed development build simply because its date is newer. A development build is pre-release/testing software, not the ordinary stable download.

2. Select the appropriate release asset
Download the release asset that matches your Windows installation and the options shown on the official page. The available asset names and architecture choices can change; use the labels displayed for the release you are installing rather than relying on an assumed filename. If several assets are shown and you are unsure which one applies, consult the project’s own release notes instead of downloading from a mirror or guessing.
3. Run the installer
Open the downloaded installer and follow its prompts. Accept the license and installation choices you want, keep the default destination unless you have a specific reason to change it, and allow setup to finish. The project describes this installer as basic, so do not expect the same breadth of codec and renderer choices offered by a bundled codec-pack setup.
4. Launch MPC-HC once
Start MPC-HC after setup completes. Opening it once confirms that Windows can launch the program and gives the application an opportunity to create its normal configuration files. You can close it again before changing Windows’ default associations. If it does not start, resolve that installation problem first; changing a file association cannot repair a program that Windows cannot launch.
5. If the installer offers associations, select only the types you want
Some setups may present file-association choices. Select the extensions you want MPC-HC to handle and leave unrelated types unchanged. Windows’ Default apps screen remains the authoritative place to inspect and change the final result. Association checkboxes in a setup wizard should not be treated as a promise that every video extension on the computer will be reassigned.

The MPC-HC project identifies K-Lite Codec Pack as an all-in-one option that includes MPC-HC and other components. It can expose more setup and configuration choices and, according to the project, can create file associations during installation.
- Open the K-Lite download or setup route referenced by the official MPC-HC project documentation.
- Choose the edition appropriate to your needs. The project says Standard should suffice for most people. Its Full edition is for users who want madVR.
- Read each setup page carefully and review the proposed components and associations before accepting them.
- Finish the installation, launch MPC-HC, and still verify the associations in Windows. Setup-created associations are not a substitute for checking each extension you care about.
This route adds components beyond the standalone player, so it is best suited to readers who want the bundled configuration rather than the smallest installation. If you are simply replacing the application that opens MP4 or MKV files, the standalone installer is the more direct route.
Do not choose Full solely because it sounds more complete. The project’s stated reason for Full is wanting madVR; Standard should be enough for most people. Renderer and codec choices can be revisited after basic playback is working.

Set MPC-HC as the default player in Windows 11
Windows stores defaults per file or link type. To avoid changing more formats than intended, assign MPC-HC to each extension you want it to open. The process is free and uses Windows’ built-in settings.

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Default apps.
- Use the search field to enter a file extension, such as
.mp4, or search for the file type shown by Windows. - Select the current app displayed for that type.
- Choose MPC-HC from the available apps and confirm the change if Windows asks.
- Repeat the process for every extension you want MPC-HC to handle, such as
.mkvor.avi.
Enter the leading dot when searching by extension. The exact list depends on the extensions Windows recognizes and the file types exposed by the installed applications. There is no universal one-switch assignment that guarantees every video extension will change.
Method 2: start with MPC-HC’s app page
- Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Search for or select MPC-HC in the app list.
- Review the supported file and link types shown for the application.
- Select each video type you want to change, choose MPC-HC, and confirm.
This view is useful when you want to audit several associations in one place. It can still require individual selections because Windows presents defaults by type. Review the entire list rather than assuming every item displayed is a video extension you need.
Repeat only for formats you use
Assigning every type listed by an application is unnecessary if you never open those formats. A focused set of associations makes it clear which player should open the files you actually receive and avoids taking over formats you prefer another program to handle. For example, you can assign MPC-HC to .mp4 and .mkv while leaving another application associated with a different extension.
Use Open with when an association is missing
If MPC-HC does not appear for a particular extension in Default apps, right-click a file of that type in File Explorer and choose Open with. If Windows lists MPC-HC, select it and use the option to make it the default for that file type when offered. Then return to Default apps and verify the extension.
If MPC-HC is not offered in either location, first confirm that the installation completed and that MPC-HC launches from the Start menu. Reinstalling from the official release page may be appropriate if the program is absent or damaged. Do not apply an unverified registry edit merely to force an association; use the project’s official guidance for any issue that Windows cannot resolve through its supported interface.
Check the extension of the actual file, not just its description. Two files may both look like video in File Explorer while using different extensions, and Windows treats those extensions as separate association types. Set the one shown after the filename’s final dot.

Confirm that the defaults work
- Open File Explorer and locate one test file for each extension you changed.
- Double-click a file and check that MPC-HC opens it.
- In MPC-HC, confirm that the picture, sound, subtitles, and seek controls behave as expected for that file.
- Close the player, then open a second file of the same extension to ensure the association persists.
- Test a format you intentionally left assigned to another app so you know that unrelated defaults were not changed.
If a file opens in a different application, return to Default apps and search that exact extension. Windows may display similar-looking formats separately, such as different extensions used by containers that appear to be the same kind of video. A successful launch test also distinguishes an association problem from a file-specific playback problem.
Troubleshoot common problems
MPC-HC is not listed in Default apps
- Launch MPC-HC directly to verify that installation succeeded.
- Close and reopen Settings, then search the extension again.
- Use the file’s Open with menu to see whether Windows recognizes MPC-HC for that type.
- If the program is still unavailable, reinstall using the official stable release and check again. Avoid unsupported registry changes.
Only some video formats changed
This is normal when you changed one extension or when Windows exposes different formats separately. Search and assign each desired extension individually. Selecting MPC-HC as an app does not necessarily overwrite every video association.

Uninstall that build through Windows’ installed-app controls, then install the stable release shown on the official project page. Keep development builds for testing situations where you accept pre-release behavior. After reinstalling, repeat the association checks because the app registration presented to Windows may have changed.
Playback works but video output needs adjustment
Do not change renderer or decoder settings just to complete installation. The project says MPC Video Renderer is included and is the recommended/default renderer for modern systems, with HDR-video support. Advanced renderer or decoder changes are optional and belong in MPC-HC’s configuration after basic playback works. First establish that the file opens, displays an image, produces sound, and handles seeking; only then investigate specialized playback settings.
Windows 10 menus look different
Microsoft documents the same general route—Settings > Apps > Default apps—for Windows 10 and Windows 11. If the layout differs, use the search box in Default apps to find the extension, then select the preferred application for that type. The principle remains the same: Windows changes associations by file or link type.
The wrong app returns after an update
Search the affected extension again in Default apps and reselect MPC-HC. Check several extensions separately rather than assuming one correction repaired all of them. If Windows still does not offer MPC-HC, verify that the installed program launches and consult the official project guidance instead of forcing a registry change.
Useful MPC-HC capabilities after setup
Once associations are working, MPC-HC can serve as a general player for modern and older files. The project documentation lists support for HEVC/H.265, VVC/H.266, AV1, AC4, subtitles, playback-speed controls, and resume position. These features are independent of the Windows default-app assignment: changing an association only determines which program opens a file when you select it.

For modern systems, the project identifies MPC Video Renderer as included and recommended by default, and notes HDR support. Leave that default in place unless you have a specific display, driver, or playback reason to investigate another renderer. A stable installation with correctly assigned extensions is the useful baseline before experimenting with advanced options.
Remember that a supported format is not the same as a guaranteed result for every file. A damaged file, unusual encoding, or system-specific playback issue can still require troubleshooting.
