To install mods on a dedicated Project Zomboid server, stop the server, open the active profile in Zomboid/Server/, place each numeric Steam Workshop item ID in WorkshopItems=, place each mod’s exact internal ID in Mods=, save, restart, and make every client use the same build, mod set, and order.
The two settings do different jobs: WorkshopItems tells Steam what content to download, while Mods tells Project Zomboid what downloaded content to activate. A server can therefore download a mod successfully and still leave it disabled if only the first field is filled.
What a dedicated server actually uses
A dedicated Project Zomboid server does not read the mod list from the game’s in-game Mod Manager. It reads a server profile stored under Zomboid/Server/. The profile is an INI file whose name corresponds to the server profile you launch, such as Zomboid/Server/YourProfile.ini. If you edit a different profile, the server will start normally while ignoring your changes, which makes the installation appear broken.
The server profile controls the authoritative mod configuration. A player’s local subscriptions and Mod Manager choices do not replace the server’s WorkshopItems and Mods lines. Clients still need the same game build and mod content, but the dedicated server’s profile is where the administrator declares what the server should obtain and load.

Choose the installation route
The correct procedure depends on how the world is hosted. These options are related, but they are not interchangeable.

This guide focuses on a dedicated server. For a listen server, subscribe to compatible Workshop items and enable them in the host’s Mod Manager, then verify that joining players receive the same collection. For managed hosting, the same two concepts still apply even when the panel presents them as separate fields: one value identifies Workshop content and another activates internal mod IDs.
Check compatibility before changing the server
Mod installation is safest when the server, clients, and Workshop content are all aligned before the first restart. A successful download does not prove that a mod can run on your current build.
- Confirm the server’s current Project Zomboid build and require every selected Workshop item to support it.
- Check the Workshop description for required companion mods, maps, frameworks, and a prescribed load order.
- Make sure the server and every player will use the same game build, not merely the same game title.
- Back up the active
Zomboidfolder, especially the world save, before adding, removing, or updating mods. - Keep a disposable test world available for map, dependency, and script changes.
Build mismatches, stale Workshop files, and missing dependencies can prevent a client from connecting even when the INI syntax is correct. If a mod author lists a required order or companion item, treat that information as part of the installation, not as an optional suggestion.
Install mods on a dedicated server: exact procedure
1. Stop the server completely
Use the server console, hosting panel, or service manager to perform a normal shutdown. Do not edit the profile while the process is actively rewriting configuration or saving the world. Wait until the process has exited and the console or panel reports that the server is offline.
2. Identify the profile that is actually launched
Open the server’s Zomboid/Server/ directory and list the available INI profiles. Match the filename to the server name or launch argument used by your startup script, shortcut, service, or hosting panel. Open that exact file. If you maintain several worlds, write down which profile belongs to which world before making changes.

A common failure pattern is editing a newly generated or similarly named profile while the startup command continues to launch an older one. Confirming the launch profile first prevents every later step from being applied to the wrong file.

3. Select compatible Workshop items
Open each mod’s Steam Workshop page and verify that it supports the server’s current build. Read the author’s dependency and load-order instructions. For a map, also check whether the author requires a particular map folder, map order, or companion framework. Add related items as a planned set rather than enabling one component and guessing at the rest.
4. Copy both identifiers from every Workshop page
Record two different values for each mod:
- Workshop item ID: the numeric number in the Steam Workshop URL. This value belongs in
WorkshopItems=. - Mod ID: the exact internal identifier declared by the mod, normally shown in the Workshop information or the mod’s
mod.infometadata. This value belongs inMods=.
Do not substitute the Workshop page title for the internal ID. Titles can contain spaces, punctuation, or branding, while the internal identifier is the string the game uses when activating the mod. Preserve spelling and case exactly as shown in the metadata.
5. Edit the two INI settings
Find the existing WorkshopItems= and Mods= lines in the active profile. Put the numeric Workshop IDs on the first line and the internal IDs on the second. Keep the delimiter and list style already used by the profile, and follow any load-order instructions supplied by the mod author.
The fields may be empty on a new profile, so the relevant keys can appear as:
WorkshopItems=
Mods=After adding content, each key should contain the complete list required for that server. Avoid accidental line breaks inside a list, extra punctuation, or a second copy of the same key later in the file. If an administrator has already configured mods, preserve the existing entries unless you are deliberately removing them.
6. Save without changing unrelated settings
Save the file as plain text with its original INI filename and extension. Do not use a word processor that inserts formatting. Limit this change to the Workshop and mod entries, so a startup problem can be traced to the modification rather than to an unrelated gameplay setting.
7. Start the server and watch the first startup messages
Restart the server normally. On startup it should download or refresh the listed Workshop content, then attempt to activate the internal IDs. The first fatal console or log line is usually more useful than a long chain of later errors. Record that first failure before changing additional settings.

A download that completes successfully proves only that Steam obtained the Workshop item. Activation still depends on the internal ID, compatible build, dependencies, and order.
8. Verify with a client
Join from a client using the same game build and the same intended mod collection. Compare the server’s list with the client’s displayed requirements rather than relying only on a player’s existing subscriptions. Test a new connection before inviting players to an established world.
Keep the backup made before installation until the mod set has been exercised in the test world. Some additions do not alter an existing world retroactively, while others can affect map data, scripts, or saved objects in ways that are difficult to undo.
Workshop ID versus Mod ID

The values are often different in both format and meaning. A numeric Workshop ID is not a substitute for an internal Mod ID, and a readable internal ID does not tell Steam which Workshop item to fetch. For a mod with multiple components, record every Workshop item and every internal ID the author requires.

Keep server and clients synchronized
Every participant needs the same game build and a matching mod set. Differences in one item, one internal ID, or the order of entries can produce connection rejection, missing-mod prompts, or desynchronization.
- Compare the server’s Workshop item list with the collection each client has installed.
- Compare internal IDs, not just the visible Workshop titles.
- Use the same order when an author specifies an order, especially for maps and dependencies.
- Remove stale or duplicate versions from clients before retrying a connection.
- After a build change, recheck every selected item instead of assuming an older set remains valid.
When distributing instructions to players, provide the server’s authoritative list and tell them to let the game obtain the required Workshop content. A player subscribing to a similarly named item is not sufficient if its internal ID or supported build differs.
Maps, dependencies, and load order
Dependencies
Some mods require libraries, frameworks, or other Workshop items. Install the complete dependency chain and place all required internal IDs in the profile. If a dependency is omitted, the primary mod may download yet fail during activation.

Maps
Map mods can require more care than cosmetic or standalone gameplay mods. Follow the author’s instructions for map order and any related items, then test in a backup or disposable world. A map addition may not appear in an already explored save, and removing a map from a world that contains its objects can create an unsafe state.
Load order
Do not alphabetize a list that the author says must follow a specific order. Put prerequisites where instructed and keep map entries in the documented sequence. If no order is stated, make one change at a time and use the server log and a test connection to identify conflicts before adding more content.
Backups, updates, and removing a mod
Back up before every structural change
Copy the active Zomboid folder or your provider’s complete world backup before adding, updating, or removing a mod. Retain at least one known-good copy and label it with the date, profile, build, and mod set. A configuration backup alone is not enough if the world itself has been changed.
Update deliberately
Workshop authors can publish updates that change dependencies, internal IDs, or compatibility. Read the current Workshop notes before restarting an established server. Test the updated set in a copy of the world, then schedule the production restart and inform players that their clients may need to refresh content.

Remove or roll back safely
Stop the server before removing an entry from either INI field. Restore the previous profile and world backup if the updated set causes errors. If the mod documentation requires a fresh world, do not assume that deleting the two IDs reverses changes already written into the save.

The mod downloads but is not active
Open the active profile and inspect Mods=. Add the exact internal ID from the mod metadata, preserving spelling and case. Confirm that the Workshop item’s download corresponds to that ID and restart after saving. A populated WorkshopItems= line alone only requests acquisition; it does not enable the package.
Players are rejected or experience desynchronization
Compare the server and client game builds first. Then compare Workshop IDs, internal IDs, and order. Remove outdated client files or let the client reacquire the required Workshop content. If the server was recently updated, verify that every selected item supports the new build before changing unrelated settings.

Changes appear to do nothing
Check that the edited file is under Zomboid/Server/ and that its profile name matches the one actually launched. Confirm that the server was fully stopped before editing and restarted afterward. If several profiles exist, temporarily record which one the startup command uses so future changes target the same file.

Read the Workshop author’s dependency and order instructions again. Add missing companion items, preserve the documented sequence, and test the group in a disposable world. Use the first fatal console or log line to identify the missing or incompatible component instead of repeatedly changing unrelated INI options.
An existing save behaves unexpectedly
Stop testing on the live world and restore the backup made before the mod change. Some mods require a new world, and some map changes do not apply retroactively. If the author documents a fresh-world requirement, create one rather than trying to repair the established save by repeatedly toggling the mod.
Using managed hosting for modded servers
A managed provider can reduce the file and maintenance work, but it does not eliminate the underlying decisions. Before moving a world, verify that the service supports your Project Zomboid build and can expose both Workshop item and internal Mod ID settings. Check whether the panel can preserve order, install dependencies, restart after changes, and show startup logs.
- Confirm how often automatic backups run and how long they are retained.
- Ask whether backups include the world, server profile, and mod configuration.
- Check whether you can download a backup before a risky mod update.
- Verify the provider’s process for changing builds and rolling back a failed update.
- Confirm that its mod tool accepts the author’s required load order rather than sorting entries automatically.
Delegating administration is useful when the server must stay online, but a panel that hides the active profile or cannot restore a world leaves you with less control during a failure. Treat the provider’s documented build support, backup policy, and mod workflow as requirements, not marketing extras.

- Stop the server and edit only the active profile’s two mod fields.
- Start the server while watching the first startup errors.
- Connect with a test client using the same build and collection.
- Keep the backup until map loading, joining, and normal gameplay have been verified.
- Publish the final list and build to players so their clients remain aligned.
Following this sequence separates acquisition, activation, compatibility, and save safety into distinct checks. That makes a failure diagnosable instead of turning every mod change into an uncontrolled trial.
