Install a Vintage Story mod by downloading the release that matches your exact game version, placing its original .zip file in the user Mods folder, and enabling it in the main-menu Mod Manager. Do not extract the ZIP. Back up worlds first, because changing a mod set can affect whether an existing world loads correctly.
What you need before installing a mod
Have these items ready before changing the client:
- A working Vintage Story installation and the game version shown by your launcher or main menu.
- A backup of every world that matters. Keep the backup outside the world’s normal save location so an update or removal cannot overwrite it.
- The mod’s original download file, normally a ZIP archive.
- A release from the official Vintage Story ModDB or a trusted author page. Treat unrelated mirrors and repackaged files cautiously.
Compatibility is the first decision, not a troubleshooting step. A mod built for a different Vintage Story release may refuse to load, work only partially, or cause crashes. Read the mod’s Files tab and select a release that supports the exact game version installed on your computer.
Install a mod manually through Mod Manager
This is the normal method for single-player worlds and for client-side additions that you want on your own computer.
- Back up your worlds. Exit any active world and copy its save data to a separate backup location. If a mod changes blocks, items, recipes, entities, or world generation, removing it later may not restore the old state.
- Check the game version. Note the full version number, including a preview or pre-release suffix when one is shown. Open the mod’s Files tab and choose a file whose compatibility statement includes that version.
- Download the mod file. The usual download is a file ending in
.zip. Leave that archive intact; do not open it and extract its contents into another folder. - Open the game’s folder picker. Start Vintage Story, remain at the main menu, open Mod Manager, and click Open Mods Folder. This control points to the user-data Mods directory that the current installation is using.
- Copy the ZIP. Drag or copy the downloaded archive into the folder that opened. Keep the ZIP itself in that folder. Do not put the download in a nested folder unless the mod’s own instructions explicitly require a special layout.
- Reload the list. Return to Mod Manager and click Reload Mods, or close and restart the game. The mod should now appear in the list.
- Enable it. Select the mod in Mod Manager and enable it. Read any dependency, side, or version warning shown by the manager before entering a world.
- Test safely. First load a backup or a test world. Confirm that the expected item, block, command, or interface appears before relying on the mod in a valuable save.
Installing several mods at once makes failures harder to isolate. Add one mod, reload, and test; then add the next. Keep a short record of each filename and version so you can reproduce a working setup.

Where the Vintage Story Mods folder is located
Open Mods Folder is the safest route because it avoids guessing which profile or installation is active. If you need to browse to it manually, the documented user-data locations are:

Vintage Story also checks a Mods folder inside the game’s installation directory. That location is used mainly for built-in Essentials, Creative Mode, and Survival Mode content. Downloaded user mods normally belong in the user-data folder above, not beside the game executable.

Advanced users can change where the client looks by editing the modPaths setting in clientsettings.json. A custom path is useful for separated profiles or testing, but it also creates an easy way to copy files into a directory the game is no longer reading. If a mod appears to vanish after changing paths, restore the intended path or use Mod Manager’s folder button to identify the active location.

Read the mod’s side designation and installation notes before copying it. A client-only mod belongs on your computer; placing it on a dedicated server does not make it active for players. Conversely, a world-changing server mod cannot be made effective merely by installing a similarly named file on one client.
What happens when you join a modded multiplayer server
From Vintage Story 1.16 onward, joining a modded server automatically sets up the server mods required on the player side. The client stores those downloaded files in a server-specific area under %AppData%RoamingVintagestoryDataModsByServer, with a subfolder named for the server or its IP address.

Do not copy server downloads into your general user Mods directory unless the administrator specifically tells you to; doing so can create duplicate or conflicting versions.
Force a server mod to download again
If an administrator updates a server mod but keeps the same filename, your client may continue using its cached copy. Leave the server, close the game if necessary, and delete that server’s own subfolder inside ModsByServer. Rejoin afterward so the client can download the current files again. Delete only the affected server folder, not the entire ModsByServer directory, unless you intentionally want to clear every server cache.

Verify that the installation worked
After reloading, use Mod Manager as the first confirmation point:
- The mod has a visible entry rather than remaining absent.
- Its enabled state is on, with no unresolved dependency or version warning.
- The displayed version corresponds to the ZIP you copied, not an older archive left in the folder.
- The feature appears in a test world or on the server where that side of the mod is active.
If the mod loads but its feature is missing, check its own configuration and side requirements before reinstalling. Some mods add content only after a new world is created, require a command, or depend on another mod; those conditions should be stated on the mod’s release page.

Troubleshooting common installation failures
The mod does not appear in Mod Manager
- Close Vintage Story completely.
- Open the user-data directory and confirm that the file is in the active
Modsfolder, not still in Downloads and not inside an extra nested folder. - Confirm that the filename ends in
.zipand that you did not extract it. If your browser added a second extension such as.zip.zip, correct the filename. - Open
clientsettings.jsonandserverconfig.jsonin the Vintage Story data directory. Check whethermodPathscontains an obsolete username, stale drive letter, or another path that no longer exists. - Correct the stale path, save the file, restart the game, and use Open Mods Folder again to verify the destination.
Do not edit unrelated settings while diagnosing a path problem. Make a backup copy of a JSON file before changing it so you can restore the previous configuration if the game stops starting.
The game crashes or a feature fails after enabling the mod
- Check the mod’s supported release against the exact Vintage Story version, including preview or pre-release status.
- Disable the newly added mod and test again. If the crash disappears, re-enable it alone to distinguish a bad release from a conflict.
- Compare its compatibility notes with every other enabled mod. Two individually valid mods can still conflict when they alter the same systems.
- Use the backed-up world for testing. Do not repeatedly open your only copy while changing a world-affecting mod set.
An incompatible release may fail outright or appear to load while producing broken behavior, so a green enabled indicator is not proof that the combination is supported.

Two copies of the same mod are installed
Vintage Story attempts to load only the highest version when more than one copy of the same mod is present. That rule can conceal an accidental duplicate: you may edit or remove the older file while the newer one is still active. Keep one intended release in the Mods folder and remove older copies, then reload Mod Manager.

Check the side label first. A client-only mod affects only your computer. A server or Both mod must be installed and permitted by the server setup, and a Both mod may require matching versions. If the server supplies its own files, clear only the affected server cache folder when a same-named update is not appearing, then reconnect.

Updating
- Back up the affected worlds.
- Read the new release notes and verify support for your exact Vintage Story version.
- Exit the game before changing files.
- Move the old ZIP to an archive folder outside Mods, or remove it, then copy in the new ZIP.
- Restart or use Reload Mods, enable the new release, and test a backup world.
Keeping old ZIPs in the active folder can trigger the duplicate-version rule and make it unclear which release is running.
Disabling or removing
Disable the mod in Mod Manager first when possible, then restart and test the backup. Removing a mod that supplied blocks, items, entities, or world-generation data can leave missing content or make a save fail to load. If the world is important, restore the pre-change backup rather than experimenting on the original.

Server administration with ModDB commands
Administrators can manage mods from the server command system instead of copying every file manually. The command reference lists these forms:

These command forms are documented for Vintage Story 1.18.0-pre.7. Command behavior can differ on another server build, so confirm the syntax against the version actually running before using it in production. Test an install on a copy or maintenance instance, announce changes to players, and retain a rollback backup.

A reliable maintenance routine
For a stable modded setup, keep a dated backup of worlds, record the Vintage Story version, and save a list of enabled mod filenames and versions. Change one variable at a time, test after every reload, and keep a known-good ZIP set outside the active Mods folder. When moving between game versions, re-check every mod rather than assuming that a previously working release remains compatible.
