Minecraft Bedrock Edition does not install Java Edition .jar mods through a mods folder. Its supported customization system is called Add-Ons. Add-Ons use Resource Packs, Behavior Packs, Skin Packs, or combinations of them.
Most downloads arrive as .mcpack, .mcaddon, or .mcworld files. On Windows, Android, and iOS, opening one of these files normally starts Minecraft and imports it automatically. You then activate the pack in a world’s Add-Ons settings.
What the Bedrock file types mean
| File | Purpose |
|---|---|
.mcpack |
A packaged Resource Pack or Behavior Pack. |
.mcaddon |
A package containing one or more .mcpack or .mcworld files. |
.mcworld |
A packaged Bedrock world, which may already include Add-Ons. |
.zip |
Not automatically recognized as a Bedrock Add-On. It must contain the correct Bedrock structure and use the appropriate extension. |
A Resource Pack changes client-side content such as textures, models, sounds, and interface elements. A Behavior Pack changes how content behaves and can add or modify entities, recipes, functions, loot, and other gameplay elements. Some projects include both packs and link the Resource Pack to the Behavior Pack.

Install a Bedrock Add-On on Windows
- Download the
.mcpack,.mcaddon, or.mcworldfile from a source you trust. - Open File Explorer and go to the folder containing the download, usually Downloads.
- Double-click the file.
- Allow Minecraft to open it if Windows asks which application to use.
- Wait for Minecraft to display an import message. Large packs or worlds may take a moment.
A .mcpack is imported into the appropriate Resource Pack or Behavior Pack collection. An imported .mcworld appears in the Play menu as a world.
Activate a pack in a new world
- Open Minecraft Bedrock and select Play.
- Select Create New World.
- Under Settings, scroll to Add-Ons.
- Choose Behavior Packs or Resource Packs, depending on the download.
- Open the MY PACKS drop-down.
- Select the pack and choose Activate.
- Repeat the process in the other pack tab if the Add-On includes separate Behavior and Resource Packs.
- Select Create.
If a Behavior Pack correctly declares a dependency on its Resource Pack, activating the Behavior Pack may activate the linked Resource Pack automatically. If the pack appears in only one tab, that can be normal: a Resource Pack belongs in Resource Packs, while a Behavior Pack belongs in Behavior Packs.
Activate an Add-On in an existing world
- From Play, find the world and select its edit icon.
- Open Resource Packs or Behavior Packs under Add-Ons.
- Open MY PACKS, select the imported pack, and choose Activate.
- Activate any companion pack in the other tab.
- Save the world settings and enter the world.
Make a copy of an important world before testing unfamiliar Add-Ons. A pack that changes entities, blocks, terrain, or world generation can affect existing gameplay and may not be easy to remove cleanly.
Install a ZIP download
Some creators distribute a pack or world as a ZIP file. Microsoft’s Bedrock instructions allow you to change the extension to .mcpack or .mcworld before opening it, but this is not a conversion process. It works only when the ZIP already contains a valid Bedrock pack or world in the expected format.
- In File Explorer, enable visible file extensions. In Windows 11, select View > Show > File name extensions.
- Right-click the ZIP and choose Rename.
- Change only the ending to the type that matches its contents: for example,
Example.ziptoExample.mcpack. - Accept the warning about changing the file extension.
- Open the renamed file.
Do not rename an arbitrary ZIP containing screenshots, instructions, or a nested download folder and expect Minecraft to import it. If the ZIP contains a top-level folder that itself contains the actual pack, it may need to be repackaged correctly rather than simply renamed.

Install an Add-On manually on Windows
Manual copying is mainly useful for packs you are developing or troubleshooting. Microsoft’s current Windows location for the Bedrock com.mojang folder is:
%appdata%Minecraft Bedrockuserssharedgamescom.mojang
- Press Win+R.
- Paste
%appdata%Minecraft Bedrockuserssharedgamescom.mojanginto the Open box. - Select OK.
- Copy a finalized Behavior Pack into
behavior_packs. - Copy a finalized Resource Pack into
resource_packs. - For packs under development, use
development_behavior_packsordevelopment_resource_packs. - For a packaged world, use
minecraftWorlds.
The folder names are significant. Other relevant directories include skin_packs and the two development-pack folders. After copying a pack, restart or return to Minecraft and look for it in the appropriate Add-Ons tab.

Older guides often point to %appdata%Minecraft.... That is not the current Windows path documented by Microsoft for Bedrock.
Install on Android
- Download the Add-On or world file.
- Open Settings > Storage > Explore. The exact wording can vary by Android version.
- Open the location containing the download, usually Download.
- Select the
.mcpack,.mcaddon, or.mcworldfile. - Choose Minecraft if Android asks which app should open it.
- Wait for the import to finish, then activate the pack in the world’s Add-Ons settings.
An imported world should be available from Minecraft’s Play menu. A pack must still be activated for the particular world unless the download is an already configured world package.
Install on iPhone or iPad
- Download the Add-On or world file in Safari or another supported app.
- Tap the downloaded file.
- When the share or open prompt appears, choose Open in Minecraft.
- Wait for Minecraft to import the file.
- For a pack, open or edit a world and activate it under Add-Ons.
- For a
.mcworld, find the imported world in Play.
Use the Add-On on a console through Realms
Consoles do not use the documented Windows-style process for importing arbitrary .mcpack or .mcaddon files. The practical cross-device route is to configure the world on Bedrock for Windows, upload that Add-On-enabled world to a Realm, and then open the Realm world on the console.

- Upload that world to a Realm.
- Open the Realm on the console using the same Microsoft account or Realm membership.
The Add-On is associated with the Realm world rather than installed by dropping files onto the console.
No command is needed to install a pack
Commands such as /give and /setblock are for using or testing content after an Add-On is active. They do not import or activate the pack. The normal process is file import followed by activation through Play > Create New World > Settings > Add-Ons.
Troubleshoot an Add-On that does not appear
If the pack is missing from MY PACKS, the problem is usually the package structure or manifest rather than the world settings.
Check the file extension
Make sure the file is really named .mcpack, .mcaddon, or .mcworld. With extensions hidden, Windows can create a file such as pack.mcpack.zip. Enable file-name extensions before renaming or diagnosing downloads.
Check the manifest
Every Resource Pack and Behavior Pack needs a correctly named manifest.json. Common errors include:

- The file is accidentally named
manifest.json.json. - JSON braces, brackets, commas, or quotation marks are invalid.
- The manifest header UUID and module UUID are identical. They must be different.
- The pack is nested one folder too deeply.
- Expected directories or files are misspelled.
Bedrock folder names are exact. For example, a function directory is named function, not functions, and it contains .mcfunction files. A pack can import successfully while its content remains unusable if files are in the wrong location.
Check a red exclamation mark
If an activated Behavior Pack shows a red exclamation point, open its diagnostic information. It may report a missing dependency or another loading error. For a two-part Add-On, compare the Behavior Pack dependency UUID with the Resource Pack UUID declared by that Resource Pack. A mismatch prevents the link from working.
Check pack stacking
A pack can be active but appear to do nothing because another pack overrides its files. In the active-pack list, move the intended pack above competing packs where the interface allows it. Also check for an incorrect entity name, a misspelled directory such as entities, or a file placed in the wrong pack.
Be careful with preview-only manifests
Preview Minecraft 1.21.110 and later introduced manifest interface version 3, including semver-style version strings and custom pack settings. Current documentation notes that version-3 manifests require metadata.author in the relevant preview context. This is a compatibility detail for preview packs; it is not a reason to convert every stable-release Add-On to manifest version 3.
Do Bedrock Add-Ons always require Experimental Features?
No blanket rule applies. Some Add-Ons or particular features may state that they need an experimental toggle, but the standard installation and activation process does not require Experimental Features for every pack. Follow the creator’s instructions for that specific Add-On and do not enable experimental options merely because the file failed to import.

FAQ
Can I install Java Edition .jar mods in Minecraft Bedrock?
No. Bedrock uses Add-Ons rather than Java Edition .jar mods. Use a compatible .mcpack, .mcaddon, or .mcworld file.
Where do imported Bedrock packs appear?
A Resource Pack appears in the world’s Resource Packs tab, and a Behavior Pack appears in the Behavior Packs tab under Add-Ons. An imported .mcworld appears in the Play menu.
Why does my ZIP file not work after I rename it?
Renaming works only when the ZIP already contains a valid Bedrock pack or world with the expected structure. It does not convert an arbitrary ZIP into an Add-On.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do I need a command such as /give to install an Add-On?
No. Import and activation are handled through the file and world-settings interface. Commands are used only to use or test content after installation.
Why is my Add-On active but not changing the game?
Check pack stacking, exact folder and file names, entity names, and Behavior Pack dependencies. Another active pack may be overriding it, or the Add-On may have a structure or manifest error.
Can I use a Bedrock Add-On on Xbox or PlayStation?
The documented cross-device method is to activate it in a Windows Bedrock world, upload that world to a Realm, and open the Realm world on the console. Direct arbitrary file importing on consoles is not described by Microsoft’s installation procedure.
The Bottom Line
For Bedrock, think Add-Ons, not Java mods. Open a valid .mcpack, .mcaddon, or .mcworld file with Minecraft, activate its Resource Pack or Behavior Pack in the world settings, and use the current com.mojang path only when manual copying is necessary. If a pack is missing or inactive, inspect its extension, manifest.json, folder names, dependencies, and pack priority before trying commands or experimental settings.
