To install a Modlet on a 7 Days to Die dedicated server, stop the server, place the Modlet folder directly inside the server’s Mods directory, and restart. The folder immediately under Mods must contain ModInfo.xml; a typical installation looks like Mods/ModName/ModInfo.xml.
XML-only Modlets commonly work from the server installation, while Modlets that add icons, asset bundles, DLLs, or other client-dependent features may also require matching files on every player’s computer. Always check the Modlet author’s version, dependency, client, and anti-cheat requirements before starting.

Prepare the following before changing files:
- Access to the dedicated server’s installation root—the directory that contains the server’s game files.
- Permission to stop, start, and edit the server files.
- The Modlet archive downloaded from its author or a trusted distribution source.
- The Modlet’s release notes, including supported game versions, dependencies, client requirements, and rollback instructions.
- A recent save backup, especially before installing anything that changes blocks, items, entities, quests, progression, or world generation.
Do not edit a live installation while the server is running. Stop it first so the server cannot overwrite files or keep an old mod state in memory.
Install a Modlet on the server
1. Stop the dedicated server
Use your hosting control panel or the server’s normal shutdown command. Wait until the process has fully stopped before opening or replacing Modlet files.

2. Open or create the server’s Mods folder
Go to the server installation root and look for a folder named Mods. If it does not exist, create one with that exact spelling and capitalization. The folder should be at the game’s installation root, not inside a save folder, a configuration folder, a log folder, or the download directory.
3. Extract the downloaded archive
Extract the Modlet archive to a temporary location. Do not copy the archive itself into Mods. Open the extracted files and identify the Modlet folder that directly contains ModInfo.xml.

4. Copy the correct folder into Mods
Copy that Modlet folder, including its files and subfolders, directly into the server’s Mods directory. The expected structure is:

Mods/ModName/Config/...Each separate Modlet gets its own folder directly under Mods. Do not merge the contents of unrelated Modlets into one directory.
5. Check the folder depth before starting
Open the destination and verify that ModInfo.xml is one level below Mods, inside the Modlet’s own folder. These examples show the difference:

6. Start or restart the server
Start the dedicated server normally. During startup, inspect the console or server log for an entry showing that the Modlet was loaded. If there is no loaded-mod entry, stop the server and work through the troubleshooting checks below rather than testing on a live save repeatedly.
How the server and clients use Modlets
The official 7 Days to Die Wiki states that “Modlets are installed the same on Client as they are on a Server.” That describes the folder structure, not the networking behavior of every Modlet. What players must install depends on what the Modlet changes.

XML-only changes
XML changes can be sent from the server to connected clients. A Modlet that only changes game XML may therefore work with installation on the server alone, subject to its author’s instructions and game-version support.
Icons and asset bundles
Item icons and asset bundles are not pushed from the server. A Modlet that supplies either of these requires the corresponding client files on each player’s computer. Without them, the server-side change may load while icons, models, sounds, or other visual assets are missing or displayed incorrectly.
Client-dependent and code features
Features that rely on client-side code or other local files can require a matching client installation. Read the Modlet documentation for an explicit client requirement before asking players to connect. If a client file is required, every player should use the version specified by the author; mixing versions can produce missing assets, errors, or connection problems.
Modlet types, EAC, and dependencies
Inspect the extracted archive before changing anti-cheat settings. The presence of XML files alone does not prove that a Modlet is XML-only, and the presence of a DLL changes the installation and server requirements.

Do not disable EAC just because a Modlet is popular or because its archive contains many files. Change the EAC setting only when the Modlet’s documentation and files indicate that it is a code/DLL mod requiring that change. Disabling EAC can alter who is able to join and changes the server’s protection model.
Dependencies and load order
A Modlet may depend on another Modlet or support package. Install every required dependency in its own folder directly under Mods, unless the author specifies a different arrangement. A missing dependency can prevent the dependent Modlet from loading even when its own ModInfo.xml is in the correct place. Code Modlets may also require the exact 0_TFP_Harmony folder named in their documentation.

How to verify a successful installation
- Stop the server again if you need to correct files.
- Confirm the server’s active installation root, rather than a similarly named backup or client directory.
- Open
Modsand check that every immediate child folder containsModInfo.xml. - Check that no archive file, download folder, or second Modlet root sits between
Modsand the Modlet folder. - Confirm that the filename is exactly
ModInfo.xml, including capitalization. - Review the Modlet’s version and dependency notes against the server’s game version.
- Start the server and watch the console or log for a loaded-mod message.
- If the Modlet changes client assets, have a test player install the required client files and verify that icons or other assets appear.
A loaded-mod message confirms that the game recognized the folder. It does not by itself prove that every feature works; test the specific item, block, recipe, quest, or command changed by the Modlet.

The server shows no loaded-mod entry
- Wrong Mods root: Move the Modlet to the
Modsfolder under the actual server installation root. A client installation, save directory, or unrelated data folder will not load server Modlets. - Nested extraction: Open the archive again. If the path is
Mods/Download/ModName/ModInfo.xml, moveModNameup one level so the path becomesMods/ModName/ModInfo.xml. - Missing or renamed manifest: Restore the author’s exact
ModInfo.xmlfilename. Do not rename it toinfo.xml, add a second extension, or place it inside another subfolder. - Incompatible game version: Check the Modlet release notes and the server’s game build. A correctly placed Modlet can still fail when it targets another version.
- Missing dependency: Install the required dependency or support package exactly as documented, then restart the server.
The Modlet loads but its feature is missing
Check whether the feature depends on a client-side icon, asset bundle, or code component. XML can be delivered by the server, but icons and asset bundles cannot. Install the documented client package and make sure its version matches the server’s Modlet.

The server reports errors after adding a DLL Modlet
Stop the server and read the Modlet’s release notes before changing anything else. Confirm whether EAC must be disabled in serverconfig.xml, whether 0_TFP_Harmony is required, and whether a matching client installation is expected. Remove the new Modlet temporarily and restore the save backup if the server cannot start or the world behaves incorrectly.
Several Modlets conflict
Install and test Modlets one at a time when possible. If adding one causes an existing feature to disappear, compare their XML edits, dependencies, and documented load-order requirements. Keep a backup made before the change so you can return to the previous working set without permanently altering the save.
Removing or rolling back a Modlet
- Stop the dedicated server and wait for a complete shutdown.
- Back up the current save and the server’s configuration before removing files.
- Delete or move the Modlet’s own folder from
Mods; do not delete unrelated Modlet folders. - Remove any client-side files installed solely for that Modlet.
- Restore the prior EAC setting or dependency package only if the removed Modlet had changed them.
- Start the server and check the console for errors and the absence of the removed Modlet’s load entry.
Removing a Modlet does not guarantee that content already written into a save will be harmlessly erased. Follow the author’s rollback instructions and use the pre-installation backup when the Modlet changes world or progression data.
Choosing between Modlets safely
When evaluating two Modlets that provide a similar feature, compare the practical support burden rather than only the feature list:

The lowest-maintenance choice is generally the Modlet whose author clearly documents supported versions, dependencies, client files, EAC behavior, and rollback steps. Keep a written list of installed Modlets and their versions so a future server update does not leave you guessing which component caused a failure.
