To install Minecraft mods from Modrinth on a server, first match the Minecraft Java Edition version and mod loader, install that loader on the dedicated server, then either copy compatible mod JAR files into the server’s mods directory or deploy a complete .mrpack with a server-capable installer. Restart the server and use its logs to resolve missing dependencies, side mismatches, and version errors. Players must also install the client-side files required by the pack or mod.
What you need before installing anything
A mod is not compatible simply because it appears on Modrinth. Compatibility is determined by several pieces of metadata that must agree with the server and, for multiplayer, with every player’s client.
- Minecraft edition: These instructions apply to Minecraft Java Edition. Bedrock add-ons use a different format and workflow.
- Minecraft version: Record the exact version, including the patch number, such as 1.20.1 rather than only 1.20.
- Mod loader: Identify whether the server uses Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt. A mod built for one loader is not interchangeable with a build for another.
- Java runtime: Use the Java version required by the chosen Minecraft release and loader. If the existing server already starts successfully, keep its working Java installation unless the loader documentation requires a change.
- Server access: You need permission to stop the server, upload files, edit its configuration, and read its console or log files.
- A backup: Stop the server and make a copy of the world, configuration files, and current server directory before changing the loader or adding a large pack.
Write the version and loader down before browsing projects. Fabric’s documentation specifically warns that a mod can work on one Minecraft patch and fail on another. Select files whose Modrinth metadata lists the server’s exact version and loader.
Choose the right installation path
There are two fundamentally different jobs: adding one or a few mods, and deploying an entire modpack. The correct path affects dependency handling and how repeatable future updates will be.

Modrinth identifies Modrinth Servers, mrpack-install, and the itzg/minecraft-server Docker image as server-side ways to use a Modrinth pack. A normal desktop launcher installation is not automatically a dedicated-server deployment; confirm that the tool you choose can create or update a server instance.
Install the loader before installing mods
Why the loader matters
The loader is the software that starts the modded server and provides the APIs that mods expect. Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt are separate ecosystems. Do not place a Fabric JAR in a Forge server’s mods directory, or combine loader-specific builds because their filenames look similar.
Determine the existing loader
Check the server’s startup script, launch files, or console banner. A Fabric server commonly starts through a Fabric launcher JAR; Forge and NeoForge installations have their own generated launch files; Quilt has its own loader files. If the server is already modded, use the loader and Minecraft version it reports rather than guessing from the folder name.
Install or replace a loader safely
- Stop the server completely. Wait for the process to exit and make sure no world files are still being written.
- Back up the entire server directory, especially the
worldfolder,server.properties, loader configuration, and existingmodsdirectory. - Obtain the installer for the loader and Minecraft version selected by the mod or pack. Run it in the server directory and choose the dedicated-server option when offered.
- Accept the Minecraft EULA only after reading it, using the server’s normal
eula.txtprocess. The loader installer does not replace the server’s legal requirements. - Start the server once without new mods. Confirm that it reaches a ready state, then stop it cleanly. This separates loader problems from mod problems.
If the server was previously running a different loader, treat the change as a migration. A world and configuration created by one mod ecosystem may not be usable by another without adjustments. Restore the backup if the new loader cannot start or the world does not load as expected.
Install individual Modrinth mods
1. Verify every download
Open the Modrinth project page for each mod and check all of the following before downloading:

- The file lists the exact Minecraft version used by the server.
- The file is built for the server’s loader: Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt.
- The project description says whether it can run on a dedicated server, a client, or both.
- Required dependencies are listed, including the correct loader API and any library mods.
- The file is a release suitable for your installation, not an incompatible beta or build for another game version.
For Fabric, the majority of mods also require Fabric API. Download the Fabric API version that matches the server’s Minecraft version and place it with the other server-required mods.

2. Identify server-side and client-side files
Do not copy every mod from a player’s client into the dedicated server. A client-only graphics, interface, shader, or performance mod can prevent a dedicated server from starting. Conversely, a server-side gameplay mod may require every player to install a matching client component before they can connect.
Use the project’s side information and documentation to classify each file:
- Server-only: Install on the dedicated server; players may not need a matching client file.
- Client-only: Install in each player’s client instance, never on the dedicated server.
- Both sides: Install a compatible copy on the server and on each client.
- Optional client feature: Players can usually omit it, but they will not see its interface or visual effects.
3. Copy the JAR files
- Stop the server and open its instance directory—the folder containing the server’s launch files and world directory.
- Create a directory named
modsif the loader has not created one. - Upload or copy only the verified server-required
.jarfiles into that directory. Keep the original filenames so the loader and support tools can identify versions. - Copy required dependencies, such as Fabric API, into the same directory.
- Do not unpack a mod JAR, rename it to change its version, or place it in the world directory.
- Start the server and watch the console from the beginning of the launch.
On a local server, file copying can be done directly in the instance folder. On a hosting panel, use its file manager or SFTP connection and verify that you are editing the active server instance rather than a staging or backup directory.

Deploy a Modrinth modpack with an .mrpack file
What an .mrpack contains
An .mrpack is a ZIP-format package designed to describe a complete instance rather than simply bundle every JAR into one archive. Its central modrinth.index.json records files, download information, dependencies, and the Minecraft and loader versions. The pack can also contain override directories for configuration and other files.
The format distinguishes files by side. Entries can be marked required, optional, or unsupported for a server or client. That metadata is why a server-aware installer is preferable to manually extracting the archive: it can omit client-only content and apply the correct server files.
Server overrides
Modpacks can include regular overrides and server-specific overrides. Server overrides are applied after regular overrides, so a pack author can provide dedicated-server configuration without overwriting the client configuration distributed to players. This is useful for server properties, permissions, scripts, and settings that should differ between sides.
Recommended deployment sequence
- Download the pack’s
.mrpackfrom its Modrinth project page and note the Minecraft version and loader shown by the pack. - Choose a server-capable deployment method: Modrinth Servers,
mrpack-install, theitzg/minecraft-serverDocker image, or a managed host that explicitly supports Modrinth packs. - Create a new server instance or use an empty directory. Do not point an installer at an unrelated world unless its documentation explains how existing data is preserved.
- Provide the pack file or its project/version reference to the installer. Let it read
modrinth.index.json, resolve declared dependencies, download the listed files, and apply overrides. - Review the generated server directory before starting. Confirm that the expected loader files,
modsdirectory, configuration, and server overrides are present. - Accept the EULA through the normal server setup, start the instance, and monitor the first launch. A pack may generate additional configuration files on this run.
- Distribute the same pack version to players through a client-capable launcher or installer. A server pack and a client pack are related but are not always identical in their installed files.
Do not treat an .mrpack as a generic archive to extract blindly. Manual extraction can install client-only files, skip dependency declarations, or apply overrides in the wrong order.

Make the server and clients agree
A successful server launch does not prove that players can connect. Multiplayer compatibility depends on the server’s loader, Minecraft version, required gameplay mods, and configuration.
- Give players the exact pack version or a locked list of mod versions rather than asking them to download the newest files independently.
- For mods marked as required on both sides, install the same version on the server and every client.
- Keep client-only visual and interface mods on clients only.
- When a mod documents a server-only installation, do not force players to install it unless the project says a client component is needed.
- Record configuration changes that affect gameplay so a replacement server can be rebuilt consistently.
If a player receives a message about a missing mod, mismatched version, or incompatible registry, compare the client’s installed list with the server’s list before changing files at random.

First-start checklist
- The console identifies the intended Minecraft version and loader.
- The loader discovers the expected number of mods without reporting a malformed JAR.
- Required dependencies are present and the server reaches its ready or listening state.
- The world loads, and a test player can join, move, interact, and disconnect normally.
- New configuration files are reviewed before the server is opened to players.
Always restart after adding, removing, or replacing mod files. Most loaders read the mods directory only during startup; changing a JAR while the server is running does not reliably apply it and can corrupt an active world if files are replaced during writes.
Common log messages and fixes

Keep the complete first-start log when troubleshooting. The earliest error is often more useful than the final shutdown message, which may only report that startup was aborted.

Updating, removing, and rolling back mods
Updating an individual mod
- Read the new file’s supported Minecraft versions, loader, and dependency requirements.
- Back up the world and the current
modsdirectory. - Stop the server cleanly.
- Remove the old JAR and copy in the new one, along with any newly required dependency.
- Start the server and test a copy of the world or a low-risk area before inviting players back.
Do not leave two versions of the same mod in mods. Duplicate JARs can produce ambiguous loading errors or make it unclear which code is active.
Updating a modpack
Use the pack’s new version through the same installer that created the server when possible. Record the old pack version, back up the world and configuration, and read the pack’s changelog for migration notes. A pack update can change loader versions, remove mods, or alter world-generation behavior; a backup is essential before the first launch.
Rollback procedure
- Stop the server and preserve the failing logs.
- Restore the previous mod files or redeploy the previous
.mrpackversion. - Restore the matching configuration and, if world data changed, restore the pre-update world backup.
- Start the server and confirm that the previous state is healthy before diagnosing the update on a separate copy.

Choose the administration model after deciding whether you need individual mods or a complete pack. A managed service cannot make an incompatible mod compatible, and a Docker image does not remove the need to understand server/client side metadata.
Security and reliability practices
- Download files from the project’s official Modrinth page and inspect the project author, supported versions, and dependencies before installing.
- Keep the server process and operating system patched, but test loader and mod updates on a copy first.
- Run the server with a dedicated account that has access only to its own files where practical.
- Use automated or scheduled world backups and periodically verify that a backup can actually be restored.
- Do not expose administrative consoles, file panels, or remote access services to the public internet without authentication and network controls.
- Keep a text record of the Minecraft version, loader version, pack version, mod list, Java version, and configuration changes.
A concise decision checklist
- Is this Minecraft Java Edition?
- What exact Minecraft version and loader does the server use?
- Are you adding individual mods or deploying a complete modpack?
- Does every selected file support that version, loader, and dedicated-server side?
- Have you installed required dependencies, including Fabric API when a Fabric mod requires it?
- For a pack, are you using a server-capable
.mrpackinstaller rather than blindly extracting the ZIP? - Have you backed up the world and tested the loader before adding mods?
- After restarting, do the logs show a clean load and can a test client connect?
The Bottom Line
Match the Minecraft version and loader first, install that loader on a clean or backed-up server, then use the mods directory for individual server-compatible JARs or a server-aware .mrpack installer for a complete pack. Keep client-only files off the dedicated server, install every declared dependency, and treat the startup log and a restorable backup as part of every mod installation.
