To install Lithium, run your server on the correct version of Fabric Loader, download the Lithium JAR built for that exact Minecraft: Java Edition version, place it in the server’s mods folder, and restart. Lithium itself does not require Fabric API, and the official project says clients do not need Lithium installed to join a server running it.
The safest workflow is to identify the running Minecraft and Java versions first, back up the world, add one matching JAR, and verify the startup log before players return. The same process works for a new Fabric server and for an existing Fabric installation, although an existing world deserves extra care because rollback and version checks are more important.
What you need before installing Lithium
Lithium is a server-compatible optimization mod for Minecraft: Java Edition. It improves game-logic work such as physics, mob AI, and block ticking while aiming to preserve vanilla mechanics. It is not a shader, texture pack, graphics renderer, or replacement for the Minecraft server software.
Have these items ready before changing the server:
- A Minecraft: Java Edition server whose exact version you know, such as 1.20.4 or 1.21.x.
- Fabric Loader installed for that same Minecraft version. Lithium is a Fabric mod, so it will not load on a Vanilla, Paper, or another incompatible server loader.
- A Java runtime supported by your Minecraft version. Fabric currently recommends Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17 through 1.20.4 and Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer.
- The Lithium JAR matching both your Minecraft version and Fabric loader.
- Access to the server files or the host control panel’s file manager.
- A recent backup of the world and server directory.
Stop the server cleanly before copying or removing mods. A backup gives you a rollback point if the loader rejects a file or another mod becomes incompatible.

Identify the exact Minecraft version
Do not rely on a broad label such as “1.20” when selecting Lithium. Record the complete version shown by the server startup, host panel, or server JAR name. A file built for one patch release may not be accepted by another. Also record the Fabric Loader version or the Fabric startup profile in use. These two details determine which Lithium download is appropriate.
On a managed host, the software selector may show separate Vanilla, Paper, and Fabric entries. Select the Fabric entry that corresponds to the server’s Minecraft version. On a self-managed server, inspect the launch files and the JAR names in the server directory. If you cannot tell which process is running, wait for the startup log rather than guessing from the folder name.

These recommendations come from Fabric’s current server documentation. A server that fails before it begins loading mods can be using the wrong Java runtime even when the Lithium file is correct. If a host offers several Java choices, select the one attached to the server’s startup profile, not merely the version installed on your personal computer.
Back up before changing the mod set
Make a copy of the world, server configuration, current mods, and launcher files while the server is stopped. Keep the backup outside the live server directory so an accidental upload or deletion cannot overwrite it. This is especially important when adding Lithium to an established world: the backup lets you return to the known-good Fabric setup if a loader error appears or another mod conflicts with the change.
Choose how to install Fabric
Lithium cannot be added directly to a Vanilla server. If you are creating a new server, install Fabric first. Fabric documents two server installation paths: an executable server launcher for convenience and a manual installation for administrators who want explicit control over the files.

The executable launcher reduces setup work because it fetches missing files. The manual route is useful when a panel, deployment script, or backup policy requires you to control the exact server.jar, launcher JAR, and uploaded libraries. Neither route changes the Lithium steps after Fabric is running: start once, stop, place the mod in mods, and restart.

For an existing Fabric server, do not reinstall Fabric just to add Lithium. Follow the mod-folder procedure below after confirming the server’s Minecraft and loader versions. Reinstalling unnecessarily can introduce a different loader or server JAR and increases migration risk.
Install Lithium on a new Fabric server
Option 1: Use Fabric’s executable server launcher
- Create a dedicated, empty directory for the server and make sure the account running it can read and write that directory.
- Run Fabric’s executable server launcher and select the required Minecraft version and server installation location. The launcher can download missing Minecraft and Fabric files for you.
- Use the Java runtime appropriate for the selected Minecraft version: Java 17 for 1.17–1.20.4, or Java 21 for 1.20.5 and newer.
- Start the newly created Fabric server once. This first run creates the normal server directories, including the location in which mods are loaded.
- Stop the server cleanly after the initial startup completes. Do not copy a mod while the process is writing its first-run files.
- Open the server directory and create a folder named
modsif Fabric did not create one automatically. It must be the directory used by the running server, not a similarly named client folder. - Download Lithium from its official project listing. Filter the files for the exact Minecraft version and Fabric loader used by the server.
- Copy the downloaded Lithium
.jarinto the server’smodsfolder. Keep the original JAR extension; do not extract it or rename it to a different file type. - Start the server with the normal Fabric launcher or the command supplied by your host panel.
- Open
logs/latest.logand search for a Lithium load entry before allowing players to connect.
If the first run asks for normal server setup such as accepting the server terms, complete that setup according to the server software’s instructions, then stop it and continue with the mod installation. Lithium is added only after Fabric has successfully completed a baseline startup.

Option 2: Install Fabric manually
- Make a new server directory and place the Minecraft server JAR for the desired version there as
server.jar, following the version selected for your installation. - Run Fabric’s manual server installer with that Minecraft version and the matching Java runtime.
- Confirm that the installer creates
fabric-server-launch.jarin the output directory and thatserver.jaris present beside it. - Start the Fabric server once so its directories are generated, then stop it cleanly.
- Create or open
modsin the same server directory. Do not place Lithium beside the launcher JAR or inside a client profile. - Place the matching Lithium JAR in that folder.
- Start the server through
fabric-server-launch.jaror your host’s Fabric startup control, then inspectlogs/latest.log.
The manual path is useful when you need to control exactly which Minecraft server JAR, Fabric launcher, and uploaded libraries are used. The executable launcher is generally faster for a clean installation because it fetches missing files for you. If a hosting panel does not expose the manual files, use its Fabric profile or ask the host which directory is connected to that profile.
Add Lithium to an existing Fabric server
An existing Fabric installation normally needs only a mod-file change. Do not replace the world or rebuild the server if Fabric is already working.

- Stop the server and make a backup of the world, configuration files, current mods, and current server directory.
- Check the Java runtime against Fabric’s version guidance before troubleshooting the mod itself.
- Open the server’s own
modsdirectory. On a managed host, use the file manager or SFTP location associated with the Fabric server, not a separate client instance. - Remove an older or duplicate Lithium JAR if one is already present. Keep one matching file rather than multiple versions.
- Download the Lithium release built for the server’s exact Minecraft version and Fabric loader, then upload that JAR to
mods. - Restart using the same Fabric startup method the server already uses. Changing the startup profile at the same time makes failures harder to diagnose.
- Read
logs/latest.logfrom the new startup and confirm that Lithium loads without a version or dependency error. - Join with a test account and observe the server before reopening it to the whole player base.
If the host panel offers separate startup profiles for Vanilla, Paper, and Fabric, select the Fabric profile. Copying a mod into a directory does not convert a server that is still launching with another software loader. If the panel has multiple file roots, use the root shown by the active Fabric profile rather than a default home directory.
Does Lithium require Fabric API?
No. Lithium’s official installation instruction states that, once the latest Fabric Loader is present, you can drop the mod into the mods folder and that no additional setup, “not even Fabric API,” is required.
Fabric API can still appear in a larger modpack because another mod may depend on it. Treat that as a requirement of the other mod, not of Lithium. Do not install unrelated libraries solely because Lithium is present; instead, read the dependency information for every other JAR in the pack. A dependency error naming another mod should be resolved for that mod or by removing it, not by assuming Lithium is incomplete.
Do players need Lithium on their clients?
Not for Lithium itself. The project describes Lithium as working on both client and server and says it can be installed on a server without requiring clients to install it, and vice versa. You can therefore run Lithium server-side while players use an otherwise unmodified client, provided the rest of the server’s mod set does not impose additional client requirements.
Evaluate each other mod separately. A content, interface, rendering, or protocol mod may require a matching client installation even though Lithium does not. In a modpack, publish the complete client-mod requirement rather than assuming that Lithium’s compatibility applies to every JAR. If you are testing with a client that already has Lithium, that is optional for connecting to a Lithium-enabled server and does not prove that other mods are optional.
How to verify that Lithium loaded
A server can appear online while silently using the wrong launcher or ignoring a file in the wrong directory. Verification should happen immediately after the restart.

- Open the current
logs/latest.log, not an old archived log. - Search for
Lithiumand confirm that the loader reports the mod during startup. - Check that the startup is identified as Fabric rather than Vanilla, Paper, or another server implementation.
- Look for an exception, dependency error, or “incompatible” message following the mod-loading section.
- Confirm that only one Lithium JAR is present in the active
modsdirectory. - Connect with a test account and observe the server before reopening it to the whole player base.
If there is no Lithium entry, the most likely causes are a non-Fabric startup, an incorrect mods path, a file that is not actually a JAR, or a release built for a different Minecraft version. A successful login alone is not proof that the optimization is active; the startup log is the authoritative first check for this installation.
What Lithium changes—and what it does not
Lithium targets game-logic calculations rather than visual rendering. Its documented optimization areas include game physics, mob AI, and block ticking, with the goal of retaining vanilla behavior. It will not add shaders, improve texture resolution, replace a graphics setting, or turn a server into a different gameplay experience.

The result depends on the workload and hardware: a world with many entities, frequent block updates, or heavy simulation can respond differently from a lightly populated world. Treat Lithium as a workload-dependent optimization, not a guaranteed frame-rate or tick-rate multiplier. Installing it is therefore a compatibility and workload decision, not a promise that every machine will show the same numerical improvement.
The Modrinth listing showed 132.6 million downloads at the time of the 2026 search. That changing project counter indicates adoption, not a benchmark and not a promise of a particular improvement on your machine.
Troubleshoot a failed Lithium installation
The server stops before loading mods
Check Java first. Fabric recommends Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17–1.20.4 and Java 21 for 1.20.5 and later. A runtime that is too old or not the one selected by the host panel can prevent the server from starting before Lithium is examined. Confirm the runtime used by the actual startup profile, because a system-wide Java setting may differ from the panel’s selected executable.
The log says the mod is incompatible
Read the first loader error in logs/latest.log, then compare the Minecraft version and loader shown there with the version printed on the Lithium download. Replace the file with a build made for the server’s exact version; do not assume that a nearby patch release is interchangeable. Keep the failed log when reporting the problem so the first error, rather than the final shutdown line, can be identified.

Lithium is never mentioned in the log
Confirm that the server is launching Fabric, that the file is in the server’s own mods directory, and that its extension is really .jar. A file left in a client instance, a nested folder, or a download renamed with an extra extension will not be loaded by the server. Also check that the host has not assigned a different working directory to the startup profile.
There are multiple Lithium files
Stop the server and remove duplicate or outdated Lithium JARs. Leave one release that matches the running Minecraft version and Fabric loader, then restart and inspect the first error rather than only the final shutdown message. Keeping old files “just in case” can make the loader report a duplicate or select an unintended version.

Another mod reports a missing dependency
Lithium does not require Fabric API, but another installed mod may. Identify the mod named in the dependency error and install its stated requirement, or remove that mod if it is not needed. Do not infer a Lithium dependency from a separate mod’s message. If several mods were uploaded at once, temporarily narrow the set to identify which dependency declaration is responsible.

Change the startup profile to the Fabric launcher and verify the resulting log. A correctly uploaded Lithium JAR has no effect when the process never starts Fabric Loader. Some panels retain separate files for each profile, so confirm that the JAR was uploaded into the directory used by the selected Fabric profile.
The update causes a problem
Stop the server, restore the backed-up server files or remove the newly added Lithium JAR, and start the previously known-good Fabric configuration. Keep the failed startup log so you can compare the first loader error when selecting a different compatible release. Do not delete the backup until the server has completed a stable test startup and players have confirmed normal access.

Handle an update like any other change to the server’s mod set:
- Tell players the server will be offline and stop it cleanly.
- Back up the world and current server directory.
- Remove the old Lithium JAR before uploading the replacement; do not leave two versions for the loader to choose between.
- Confirm the replacement targets the server’s exact Minecraft version and Fabric loader.
- Start the server and inspect
logs/latest.logbefore announcing that it is available. - Test a connection and a representative area of the world before ending maintenance.
To remove Lithium, stop the server, delete its JAR from mods, and restart Fabric. Players do not need to uninstall anything if Lithium was the only client-optional mod involved. Keep the backup until you have confirmed that the world and the remaining mod set start normally without it.

A managed Minecraft host can simplify file access by providing a Fabric installation profile, a file manager, and a Java selector. Before choosing or changing a host, verify that it supports Fabric for the Minecraft version you need and that you can upload a JAR to the active server’s mods directory. Hosting prices, included storage, and support policies vary by provider, so confirm those details directly rather than assuming that every managed plan exposes the same controls.
For a self-managed server, keep the launcher, server JAR, mods, and backups organized in a predictable directory structure. For either setup, record which Fabric profile and Java runtime were used so a later update does not accidentally launch Vanilla or the wrong Java version.
