Linux works well on the Framework Laptop 12 when you match the installation guide and kernel requirements to the laptop’s processor generation. Framework documents Fedora 44 Workstation for both Core Series 3 and 13th Gen Intel models. Its Ubuntu 26.04 installation guide is specifically for the 13th Gen Intel version, so Core Series 3 owners should verify a current, matching Ubuntu guide before installing.

Identify the processor first, check Framework’s current compatibility chart, then create installation media and install with deliberate disk and encryption choices. The process is straightforward, but choosing the wrong guide or assuming that every listed distribution has the same support level can lead to missing hardware features or avoidable troubleshooting.

Identify your Framework Laptop 12 processor generation first

“Framework Laptop 12” is not a sufficient compatibility label. Framework publishes separate requirements for the Core Series 3 and 13th Gen Intel Core configurations, and the supported kernel floors differ substantially.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the processor in your purchase or configuration record, firmware setup, or the operating system currently installed. On an existing Linux installation, lscpu or cat /proc/cpuinfo will identify the processor family. On Windows, open Settings, System, About and read the Processor field. Record the exact generation before downloading an image or following a guide.

Do not infer compatibility from the laptop’s name alone. The Ubuntu 26.04 guide reviewed for this article is scoped to the 13th Gen Intel model, while Framework’s Fedora 44 Workstation guide covers both generations.

Which Linux distro works best on the Framework Laptop 12?

For the least setup work using Framework-published instructions, Fedora 44 Workstation is the clearest cross-generation choice. Framework describes it as officially supported, with full hardware support and little setup, for both 13th Gen Intel and Core Series 3 Laptop 12 systems. The trade-off is Fedora’s faster kernel update cadence, which can expose regressions sooner on very recent hardware.

Ubuntu is the more conservative LTS-style choice when you want slower-moving packages and a stability-oriented update model. However, the Framework Ubuntu 26.04 guide is explicitly for 13th Gen Intel. It should not be treated as proof that Ubuntu 26.04 is verified for Core Series 3.

Framework separates distributions into support tiers:

Support tier What Framework says What it means for you
Officially supported Ubuntu and Fedora have engineering collaboration and official customer-support coverage. Use the matching Framework guide and compatibility entry; support is still model- and release-dependent.
Community-supported Examples include Arch Linux, Bazzite, NixOS and CachyOS. Users self-validate and document known issues. You may need more configuration and should rely on the exact release entry in the compatibility chart rather than assuming parity with Ubuntu or Fedora.

Framework’s guide index also lists Arch, Bazzite, CachyOS, Linux Mint and NixOS instructions, plus separate Fedora KDE Plasma guides for the two Laptop 12 generations. The existence of a guide does not make every distribution officially supported or equivalent in stability.

When Fedora 44 is the practical default

Choose Fedora 44 Workstation if you have either processor generation and want one Framework-documented path. Framework says it has worked with Fedora to improve support for the Laptop 12’s recent hardware. The compatibility chart lists Fedora 44 for Core Series 3 with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth working out of the box, stable status and easy setup; check the entry for your exact configuration because behavior can vary by model and release.

When Ubuntu 26.04 makes sense

Choose Ubuntu 26.04 when you own the 13th Gen Intel model and prefer the Ubuntu ecosystem, long-term maintenance approach or the options exposed by Framework’s installation walkthrough. The guide includes interactive installation, third-party driver and media-format choices, and several encryption paths. Core Series 3 owners should wait for or locate a guide explicitly matching that generation and release.

Check hardware compatibility before installing

Use Framework’s current Laptop 12 Linux compatibility chart immediately before installation. Kernel versions, distro support and fingerprint packages change over time, so a chart entry is more useful than a generic statement that “Linux works.”

Kernel requirements by generation

Laptop 12 configuration Framework-listed minimum kernel Additional guidance
Core Series 3 7.1 The chart gives this minimum for the model.
13th Gen Intel Core 6.1 Framework recommends 6.13 or newer for the current hardware.

A distribution that boots with an older kernel may still have incomplete support for newer devices. Check the image’s kernel generation and the installed kernel after setup with uname -r. If the version is below the chart’s floor, use a newer release or an officially documented kernel update path rather than debugging individual devices first.

Fingerprint-reader requirements

For Core Series 3, Framework lists Libfprint 1.94.100 as the minimum for fingerprint support and prefers the latest version. The chart describes support as available on some distributions, with more support to come; it is not a guarantee that fingerprint login works on every distro or desktop environment. The 13th Gen Intel entry should be checked separately for the release you select.

Connectivity and setup fields

Read the exact chart row for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, stability and setup effort. Framework notes that results can differ by model, generation and configuration. A “working out of the box” note for one Fedora release should not be generalized to every community distribution or older image.

Prepare the installer safely

The Ubuntu path documented by Framework assumes a fresh installation on a blank drive. Even if you plan to preserve an existing operating system, prepare as though an error could erase the target disk.

  • Back up documents, browser profiles, encryption keys and any recovery codes to storage that is not the laptop’s internal drive.
  • Have an 8 GB or larger USB flash drive. Writing an installer image erases the USB’s existing contents.
  • Confirm the USB drive’s name and capacity before selecting it in the media-writing application. Do not rely on its position in a list of removable drives.
  • Connect the laptop to power. Keep a wired or trusted wireless internet connection available; Framework says internet access improves installation by enabling compatibility checks and additional packages.
  • Keep the Framework compatibility chart and the guide for your exact generation open on another device.

Create Ubuntu installation media

  1. Download the Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop image from Ubuntu’s official download site.
  2. On Linux, use Fedora Media Writer as described in Framework’s guide, or another image writer that verifies the image.
  3. On Windows, Framework documents Rufus. Select the downloaded Ubuntu image and the intended USB device.
  4. On macOS, Framework documents balenaEtcher. Select the image, select the USB and start the write operation.
  5. Wait for the writer to finish and safely eject the USB. Recheck that the drive you used was the disposable installation device, not a backup disk.

The same erase warning applies if you create Fedora media: the selected USB is rewritten as installer media.

How do I install Linux on a Framework Laptop 12?

The following sequence follows Framework’s Ubuntu 26.04 guide for the 13th Gen Intel model. Core Series 3 owners can use the procedure only after confirming that a current Ubuntu guide and compatibility entry explicitly cover their generation. Fedora users should follow Framework’s Fedora 44 guide for the corresponding model; the boot and disk decisions are similar, but the screens and package choices differ.

1. Boot from the USB

  1. Insert the installer USB while the laptop is powered off.
  2. Power on and open the firmware boot menu using the key shown on the laptop’s startup screen.
  3. Select the USB device and start the installer. If the internal drive boots instead, shut down and repeat, checking that the USB is fully inserted and visible in the boot menu.

Use a direct USB connection where possible. Hubs and adapters can make a boot device disappear during firmware startup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Start an interactive installation

Choose the interactive installation option. Select the language, keyboard layout and network connection requested by the installer. An internet connection is not strictly required for every basic install, but Framework says it enables compatibility checks and extra software packages.

3. Select the application set

Choose the default or extended application set according to how you will use the laptop. The extended option installs more commonly used applications and consumes more storage; it does not change the processor-generation compatibility requirement.

4. Review “Optimize your computer” choices

Framework’s Ubuntu walkthrough presents options for third-party graphics and Wi-Fi software and for additional media-format support. Read each option rather than accepting it automatically. Third-party drivers and codecs can improve device or media compatibility, but they also add software outside the base Ubuntu installation.

5. Choose the disk arrangement deliberately

This is the point at which an incorrect selection can destroy existing data. The installer offers several approaches:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Erase disk and install Ubuntu: removes existing partitions and data on the selected target drive.
  • Install alongside an existing operating system: creates a dual-boot layout when the installer detects suitable free space.
  • Manual partitioning: gives you direct control over partitions and mount points and is intended for users who understand the consequences.

Before confirming, verify the drive’s displayed name and size against the internal SSD you intend to use. Disconnecting unrelated external drives reduces the chance of selecting the wrong device. If you need files from the current installation, stop and complete the backup before proceeding.

6. Configure encryption

The Ubuntu guide exposes unencrypted installation, passphrase-based encryption and hardware-backed encryption choices. Encryption protects data if the storage device is removed, but recovery depends on retaining the passphrase or recovery material. Record that information in a secure location before rebooting into the new system. A forgotten encryption credential can make the installation’s files inaccessible.

7. Create the account and finish

Enter your name, computer name, username and login password. Review the summary screen, especially the target disk and encryption selection, then start the installation. When prompted, reboot and remove the USB so the laptop starts from the internal drive.

Framework’s Ubuntu guide gives an estimated duration of 15–25 minutes. That is the guide’s estimate, not a guaranteed or independently measured installation time; download speed, disk size, updates and encryption can change the duration.

Installing Fedora 44 Workstation

Framework’s Fedora 44 Workstation guide covers both Laptop 12 generations and describes Fedora as officially supported with full hardware support and little setup. Create Fedora installation media, boot from it, connect to the network when possible and follow the Fedora installer’s language, storage, account and reboot screens.

Pay particular attention to the storage destination and any automatic partitioning choice. A clean installation still removes data from the selected drive. If you require dual boot or custom partitions, use Fedora’s manual storage controls only after you have a tested backup.

Fedora’s faster kernel cadence is both a benefit and a risk: newer kernels can improve support for recently released hardware, while a regression can arrive sooner. If you value a more conservative update rhythm, Framework’s Fedora guide suggests considering an Ubuntu LTS-style distribution, provided its guide matches your processor generation.

  1. Run uname -r and compare the result with the chart’s minimum for your generation.
  2. Confirm the wireless adapter and Bluetooth toggle appear in the desktop settings. From a terminal, rfkill list shows whether either radio is blocked.
  3. Use lspci -k to inspect PCI devices and the kernel drivers attached to them.
  4. Use lsusb to confirm USB peripherals and the optional fingerprint reader are detected.
  5. If your distribution supports it, install or update its fingerprint service and run fprintd-enroll. Enrollment success is a practical check, but it does not establish support for every login manager.
  6. Suspend and resume once, test audio output and the webcam, and connect a Bluetooth device. Record any failure while the symptoms are reproducible.

Keep the exact distro release, desktop environment and kernel version with your notes. Those details are necessary when comparing your result with the compatibility chart or reporting a community-supported issue.

Common installation and compatibility problems

The USB does not appear as a boot option

Recreate the media, confirm that the writer completed successfully and try a different USB port. Check the boot menu again with the drive inserted before power-on. If the USB is detected on another computer but not the Laptop 12, verify firmware settings and use the current Framework guide for your model rather than an older walkthrough.

Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is missing after installation

Connect temporarily by Ethernet or a USB network adapter if available, install the distribution’s pending updates and reboot. Compare the resulting kernel with Framework’s minimum. If the chart says wireless works out of the box for your exact release but the device remains absent, capture uname -r, lspci -k and rfkill list output for support.

The fingerprint reader is detected but enrollment fails

On Core Series 3, verify that Libfprint is at least 1.94.100 and preferably current. Then check whether your distribution’s desktop login stack supports fingerprint authentication. Framework’s statement covers some distributions, not every release, so a working USB and Wi-Fi setup does not prove fingerprint support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The installer shows the wrong disk

Stop before confirming any partition change. Compare the displayed drive name and capacity with the internal SSD, unplug external storage and restart the installer if necessary. Selecting “Erase disk and install Ubuntu” on the wrong device is destructive.

A kernel update causes a regression

Record the previous and current kernel versions, boot the prior kernel from the boot menu if it remains available, and consult the Framework compatibility entry for your generation. Fedora’s faster update cadence makes this type of regression more plausible on very recent hardware; report the exact release and device rather than describing the problem only as “Linux incompatibility.”

Choosing between a clean install and dual boot

A clean install is simpler and is the assumption in Framework’s Ubuntu 26.04 walkthrough, but it removes the existing operating system and its partitions. Dual boot preserves both systems but requires careful space planning, a reliable backup and attention to which boot entry is selected after updates. Manual partitioning offers maximum control and maximum opportunity for a mistake. Choose the method based on your recovery plan, not only on the shortest installer path.

Final compatibility checklist

  • Processor generation identified as Core Series 3 or 13th Gen Intel.
  • Distribution and release matched to a Framework guide for that generation.
  • Kernel checked against the 7.1 minimum for Series 3 or 6.1 minimum for 13th Gen Intel, with 6.13 or newer recommended for 13th Gen.
  • Fingerprint requirements checked separately; Series 3 needs Libfprint 1.94.100 minimum, latest preferred.
  • USB of at least 8 GB backed up and verified as disposable installation media.
  • Internal-drive backups completed before partitioning.
  • Target disk, encryption mode and third-party software choices reviewed before confirmation.
  • Post-install Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, suspend, audio, webcam and fingerprint behavior tested.

Decision summary

For either Framework Laptop 12 generation, Fedora 44 Workstation is the Framework-documented cross-generation route. For a 13th Gen Intel model, Ubuntu 26.04 offers a conservative alternative with a detailed guided installer. Core Series 3 owners should not reuse that Ubuntu guide without a matching compatibility entry. In every case, the processor-specific chart, kernel threshold and exact release determine whether a feature is supported.
