Install LineageOS 24 only by following the current installation page for your phone’s exact model and regional variant. LineageOS 24 is based on Android 17, but the recovery image, firmware prerequisite, partition commands, boot-button sequence, and even the upgrade path vary by device. A generic command sequence can install the wrong image or leave a phone unable to boot.

The safe process is to verify official support, back up and prepare the phone, install the device-specific recovery and LineageOS package with ADB and Fastboot, add any optional package before the first boot, and stop whenever a required step fails.

What LineageOS 24 is—and why the exact phone matters

LineageOS 24 is the project’s Android 17-based release. The project maintains a lineage-24.0 branch, and supported devices receive builds weekly or periodically as changes are committed. A device page showing LineageOS 24.0 is evidence that the project currently publishes instructions and builds for that model; it is not evidence that every phone from the same manufacturer is supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Support is controlled by the official device list and the individual device page. A phone that is absent from the list is unsupported, and a similar model, carrier edition, storage configuration, or regional variant is not an acceptable substitute for the model named in the guide. The model number printed in Settings, on the chassis, or on the original label must match the page’s supported-model list.

How to check whether your phone is supported

  1. Open the official LineageOS device index.
  2. Search by manufacturer and marketed model.
  3. Compare the exact model or variant identifier with the value shown in your phone’s Settings and, where available, on the device itself.
  4. Open that model’s installation page and confirm that it offers instructions for LineageOS 24.0, not an older release.
  5. Read the entire page, including firmware requirements, listed quirks, recovery instructions, and any separate upgrade page.

If the index does not list the phone, do not use an image for a related device. The official project’s support rule is explicit: devices not listed are unsupported.

What to prepare before installing

A computer with ADB and Fastboot

The official installation process requires Android Debug Bridge (ADB) and Fastboot on a computer. Install both using the current instructions for your operating system, then open a terminal or command prompt in the directory from which you will run the device page’s commands. The guide for your model may require additional drivers or permissions, especially on Windows or Linux.

Do not download a recovery image or ROM package until the exact model page tells you which files to use. File names and partition targets are device-specific.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reliable USB connection

Use a known-good, data-capable USB cable and a port that reliably connects the phone to the computer. A cable that only charges can make ADB or Fastboot appear not to work. If Fastboot hangs or produces no output, the official guidance is to check the cable, try another USB port, and, for some USB problems, try a hub. A replacement cable is unnecessary if your existing cable transfers data consistently.

A verified backup

Plan the installation as a potential data-erasing operation. The clean-install procedure can require Format data or Factory reset; that removes encryption and deletes files stored in internal storage. Copy photos, videos, documents, authenticator exports, contacts, messages, and application data to a location you can actually open before starting. Check the backup from another device or computer rather than assuming that a completed copy is usable.

Remove Google accounts and understand Factory Reset Protection

The relevant LineageOS installation guide directs users to remove Google accounts before proceeding. This reduces the risk of Factory Reset Protection (FRP) blocking setup after the device is reset. Follow the account-removal instructions on your device page and record any recovery codes or credentials you will need later.

Test the stock phone first

Boot the manufacturer’s operating system and test essential functions before changing it:

  • Place and receive a call.
  • Send and receive an SMS.
  • Confirm that mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cameras, speakers, microphones, and charging work.
  • Check the exact model and software information in Settings.

Some devices need VoLTE or VoWiFi provisioned while still running the stock system. If your device page mentions that requirement, complete it before installing LineageOS. A fault that already exists in the stock system is much harder to diagnose after a ROM change.

Read the complete device guide before touching the phone

The official instructions say to read through the steps first and not continue after a failure. That warning is important because the order is not interchangeable. One model may use a bootloader command and a recovery image; another may require a different partition, a temporary recovery boot, a vendor firmware baseline, or a particular button combination. The controls displayed by recovery also differ.

An official installation page for the 10.or G illustrates the project’s general workflow, but its commands, filenames, and partition details are not universal. Never copy those values to another phone. The only authoritative command, image name, firmware version, and button sequence for your installation are the ones on your own model’s current page.

How do I install LineageOS 24 on my phone?

The steps below describe the common shape of an official installation. They are a checklist for understanding the process, not a replacement for the device page. Keep that page open and perform each step exactly as written.

1. Confirm the model and current release

Before downloading anything, confirm the model identifier again and verify that the page is for LineageOS 24.0. Check whether the page requires a particular stock-firmware version. Do not assume that the newest firmware is correct; use the baseline specified for that device.

Charge Samsung S10 to 50% in just 30 minutes—that’s up to 30% faster than with other 2.4A charger cable.

2. Unlock the bootloader if the device page requires it

Whether unlocking is required, how it is requested, and which warnings or waiting periods apply depend on the manufacturer and model. Use only the procedure on the official page. Do not substitute a method for another phone, and do not proceed if the bootloader tool reports a model or state that does not match your device.

3. Enter the documented bootloader or recovery mode

Use the exact key combination or ADB command shown for your model. Connect the phone to the computer and use the prescribed ADB or Fastboot check to verify that the computer sees it. A device that is visible in normal Android may still be invisible in Fastboot because drivers, permissions, the cable, or the selected USB port are wrong.

4. Install or boot the specified Lineage Recovery

Download the recovery image named on the device page, verify that it belongs to the exact model, and follow the page’s instruction for installing or temporarily booting it. Recovery images are not interchangeable merely because two phones share a processor or screen size. Use recovery’s own controls and messages as the source of truth while you work.

5. Apply the clean-install reset when instructed

For a clean installation, the guide may direct you to choose Format data, Factory reset, or an equivalent recovery action. This is the point at which internal files and encryption are removed. Do not perform it until your backup is complete and you have confirmed that you are in the correct recovery for the correct model.

6. Sideload the exact LineageOS package

Recovery normally provides an Apply update or Apply from ADB route. Start that mode on the phone, then use the exact sideload command and package filename from your device page. The package must be the LineageOS 24.0 build for your model, not a build for a related variant.

ADB can appear to stop around 47 percent during a sideload even when the transfer has completed. Certain benign messages are also possible. Do not cancel solely because the computer’s percentage appears stuck; read the recovery status and follow the model page’s instructions for determining whether the sideload succeeded.

7. Install optional packages before the first boot

If you want an add-on such as Google Apps, install the compatible package from recovery immediately after the ROM and before starting LineageOS for the first time. The device page controls the order and any special steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Reboot only after every selected step is complete

When the page tells you to reboot, use its reboot option. Do not boot into the newly installed system early and then return to recovery to add a package. For Google Apps in particular, the official Wiki warns that installing them after the first LineageOS boot requires a factory reset.

9. Allow the first boot to finish

The first boot can take longer than a normal restart. One device-specific guide says its first boot usually takes no more than 15 minutes; that is guidance for that device, not a universal deadline. Keep the phone connected to power, avoid interrupting it prematurely, and consult the exact page if the time exceeds the device-specific expectation.

Can I install Google Apps with LineageOS 24?

Yes, Google Apps are optional. LineageOS works without them, and the official Google Apps page says those packages are not supported by LineageOS. If you choose to install one, use only the package and architecture listed for your device page.

For LineageOS 24 (Android 17), the Wiki lists MindTheGapps packages in ARM and ARM64 variants. That table does not tell you which architecture your phone needs; the exact device page does. Do not choose ARM64 merely because the phone is modern, and do not flash a package intended for a different Android release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Download the package specified for your model and LineageOS 24.0.
  2. Install LineageOS and remain in recovery.
  3. Use recovery’s documented sideload or install action for the Google Apps package.
  4. Only then reboot into LineageOS.

If you already booted LineageOS without the package, follow the Wiki’s warning: a factory reset is required before adding Google Apps later. That reset again removes user data, so plan the decision before the first boot.

Clean install versus an upgrade

Do not infer an upgrade path from the clean-install instructions. Whether an existing LineageOS installation can be upgraded while retaining data, which firmware is required, and whether recovery must be updated are determined by the device’s separate upgrade guidance.

Question Clean installation Upgrade or migration
What controls the procedure? The current LineageOS installation page for the exact model. The model’s upgrade page and the current release-specific instructions.
Is a data wipe possible? Yes. Format data or factory reset can delete internal storage. Not established generically; follow the device-specific upgrade instructions.
Which recovery, firmware, and partitions apply? Only those named on the current model page. Only those named for that model and upgrade path.
Can Google Apps be added later? Install them before the first boot if desired. Check the upgrade instructions; the first-boot rule still matters for a new installation.

Troubleshooting without making the problem worse

Fastboot detects nothing or hangs

  • Confirm that the phone is actually in the bootloader or Fastboot mode specified by the guide.
  • Check the USB cable and try a different computer port.
  • On systems affected by USB compatibility problems, try the hub workaround mentioned in the official guidance.
  • Check the required drivers or permissions for your operating system.
  • Re-read the model page for a required driver, firmware state, or alternate connection mode.

Do not flash another device’s image as an experiment. If the required detection step still fails, stop and resolve the connection or driver problem first.

The sideload percentage appears frozen

Around 47 percent can be a benign display symptom during some ADB sideloads. Inspect recovery’s completion message and any instructions on the exact device page. Canceling only because the computer’s progress display stopped can interrupt a successful operation.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The phone does not boot after installation

Do not immediately repeat random commands. Return to the device page, check whether the installation and optional-package order was followed, and verify the required firmware baseline. If a required step failed, stop rather than improvising. Preserve your backup and record the exact recovery message before seeking device-specific help.

Calls or mobile features do not work

Compare the result with the quirks section on the model page. If VoLTE or VoWiFi provisioning was required on the stock system and was skipped, that may explain missing calling features. Also distinguish a LineageOS configuration issue from a function that was already defective before installation.

Risks, app compatibility, and project limits

LineageOS installation is performed at your own risk. The official guide states, “LineageOS is provided as-is with no warranty.” A wrong model, incompatible firmware, interrupted flash, or incorrect recovery image can cause installation failure and may require manufacturer-specific recovery procedures.

Installing LineageOS does not guarantee that every banking, streaming, digital-rights-management, or other integrity-sensitive app will run. Individual apps may exclude a device or require checks that the project cannot control. Test the applications you depend on before treating the phone as your only device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Official device-support requirements include enforcing SELinux, and supported devices must not ship with su included. Do not interpret a successful installation as a promise that root access is bundled or officially supported.

Final pre-flash checklist

  • The official device index lists your exact manufacturer, model, and variant.
  • The page is current for LineageOS 24.0 (Android 17).
  • You have read the full installation and, if relevant, upgrade instructions.
  • ADB and Fastboot work on your computer.
  • Your cable transfers data and the computer has a suitable USB port.
  • Your backup is complete and verified.
  • Google accounts have been removed as instructed to reduce FRP problems.
  • The stock phone’s calls, SMS, and other essential functions have been tested.
  • Any required stock firmware and device-specific quirks are understood.
  • You know whether you want Google Apps and have the exact architecture-compatible package ready.
  • You will stop if a required step fails instead of substituting commands from another model.
