McMyAdmin can still run a Minecraft server, but it is legacy software. Its publisher says McMyAdmin was replaced by AMP in 2018 and that McMyAdmin 2 no longer receives feature updates. Use AMP for a new deployment; use the procedure below when you must maintain an existing McMyAdmin installation or a legacy environment.

The installation depends on your operating system. Native 64-bit Linux uses a bundled binary, 32-bit Linux, macOS and BSD require Mono, and Windows requires a supported Windows release plus .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. After the panel is installed, you still have to install a compatible Minecraft server runtime, accept the EULA, allocate memory, start the game server and configure networking.

What McMyAdmin does—and what it does not do

McMyAdmin is a web control panel for managing a Minecraft server. It is not the Minecraft server itself. The panel starts and stops the game process, exposes configuration and administration controls, and can manage the server files, but the machine still needs the runtime required by the Minecraft edition you choose.

The instructions below describe the legacy McMyAdmin 2 workflow. The publisher identifies AMP as its successor and says new installations should use AMP. McMyAdmin’s website also makes historical marketing claims of more than 75,000 Minecraft servers and more than 35 service providers; the page does not state a year for either figure, and they are not independent current adoption statistics.

Before downloading anything, verify whether the operating system is 64-bit or 32-bit and decide which Minecraft edition you intend to host. The Java Edition server and Bedrock Dedicated Server are different products with different files and launch methods.

Install McMyAdmin on 64-bit Linux

The official Linux procedure separates system-level preparation from the panel installation. Run the first archive commands as root, then switch to a regular account for the McMyAdmin download, password setup and launch. Replace [YOURPASSWORD] with a strong password; do not type the brackets.

  1. As root, move to /usr/local, download the support archive, extract it and remove the downloaded ZIP:

    cd /usr/local
    wget https://mcmyadmin.com/Downloads/etc.zip
    unzip etc.zip; rm etc.zip
  2. As the non-root account that will run the panel, create its home-directory installation folder and enter it:

    mkdir ~/McMyAdmin
    cd ~/McMyAdmin
  3. Download and extract the 64-bit package, then delete the ZIP:

    ./MCMA2_Linux_x86_64 -setpass [YOURPASSWORD] -configonly
  5. Remain in the installation directory and launch McMyAdmin:

    cd ~/McMyAdmin
    ./MCMA2_Linux_x86_64

The working-directory requirement is strict. McMyAdmin cannot be started by calling the executable through a relative or absolute path while your shell is somewhere else. If it appears to start and immediately fails, run pwd, change to ~/McMyAdmin, and launch it again. Keep the panel process under the non-root account so a Minecraft compromise does not automatically grant unrestricted system privileges.

Install McMyAdmin on 32-bit Linux, macOS or BSD

These platforms do not have a native McMyAdmin build. Install the Mono framework appropriate to your operating system before running the panel. Mono supplies the runtime for the Windows-style McMyAdmin.exe program.

  1. Create and enter the installation directory:

    mkdir ~/McMyAdmin
    cd ~/McMyAdmin
  2. Download and extract the Mono package:

    wget https://mcmyadmin.com/Downloads/MCMA2-Latest.zip
    unzip MCMA2-Latest.zip
    rm MCMA2-Latest.zip

  4. Start the panel from that same directory:

    cd ~/McMyAdmin
    mono McMyAdmin.exe

Do not launch mono McMyAdmin.exe from another directory. The panel expects its supporting files relative to the installation folder. If Mono is installed but the command is not found, correct the Mono installation or your shell’s PATH before troubleshooting McMyAdmin itself.

Install McMyAdmin on Windows

Supported Windows versions

The legacy Windows installer supports Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 or newer. Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are unsupported. Those old systems also lack modern security maintenance, so moving the server to a supported operating system is preferable to forcing a legacy installation.

Install .NET Framework 3.5 SP1

McMyAdmin requires .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1. On a desktop edition of Windows, install that framework before launching the panel. On Windows Server, add the .NET 3.5 feature through Server Manager. A missing framework commonly causes the installer or executable to refuse to start.

Windows Server Core

Server Core users should use the dedicated core archive rather than the graphical installer and follow its command-line service instructions. Server Core has no normal desktop shell, so plan how the service will start, stop and be monitored before deploying it.

Prepare the Minecraft server inside McMyAdmin

Once McMyAdmin is running, open its web interface using the address and administrative port shown by your installation or existing configuration. Sign in with the password you set during -setpass. The exact Minecraft release and Java requirement must be checked against the server version you plan to deploy because those requirements change over time.

  1. Select the server variant. In the panel, choose the Minecraft server software and release appropriate for your world. Do not assume that a Java server release can run a Bedrock world or that an old Java runtime is valid for a newer release.
  2. Install or supply the server files. Let McMyAdmin download the selected server package if that option is available in your legacy installation, or place the required files where the panel’s configuration expects them.
  3. Verify Java from the command line. Minecraft’s official Java server instructions require Java to be available to the server process. On Windows, add the Java executable to the system PATH if the panel cannot find it. On Linux, macOS or BSD, confirm the selected Java command works for the account that runs McMyAdmin.
  4. Accept the EULA. Start the setup far enough for the EULA file or prompt to appear, read the Minecraft terms, and accept them only if you agree. A server will not legally and technically complete startup while the EULA remains unaccepted.
  5. Set memory deliberately. Allocate enough RAM for the selected Minecraft release, world size, view distance, plugins or mods and the operating system. Leave headroom for the OS and McMyAdmin instead of assigning all physical memory to Java. If the process is killed, swaps heavily or the machine becomes unresponsive, reduce the allocation or move the server to a larger host.
  6. Start the server from the panel. Watch the console for a completed startup message rather than assuming that a launched process is ready. Address Java errors, missing files, EULA errors or out-of-memory messages before testing from a client.
  7. Test locally first. Connect from a Minecraft client on the same machine or local network using the server’s local address. A successful local connection proves that the game process and basic configuration work before you introduce firewall rules, port forwarding and internet exposure.

Make the server reachable from outside your network

External players may need both host-firewall and router configuration. Minecraft’s Java server documentation identifies firewall and port-forwarding as additional setup, and the Java default game port is 25565. Confirm the actual port configured in McMyAdmin before creating rules; do not blindly forward a port that your server is not listening on.

  1. Keep ports distinct. The McMyAdmin administration interface and the Minecraft game listener serve different purposes. Give administrators access to the panel port, while forwarding only the game port needed by players.
  2. Allow the game port through the host firewall. Create an inbound rule for the configured Minecraft port and the correct protocol. Restrict the administrative interface to a management network, VPN or trusted addresses whenever possible.
  3. Forward the game port on the router. Map the router’s external port to the server’s fixed internal address. Reserve the server’s LAN address so the rule does not break after a DHCP lease changes.
  4. Test from a different network. Use a phone connection or another external network, because testing your public address from inside the same LAN may be affected by the router’s NAT loopback behavior.
  5. Remove unnecessary exposure. If external access is not required, do not forward the game port. Keep McMyAdmin’s administration port off the public internet unless you have a specific, secured reason to expose it.

Java Edition versus Bedrock Dedicated Server

The McMyAdmin workflow described here is for managing a Java Edition server. Bedrock Dedicated Server is a separate product, not an alternate Java executable that you can substitute inside the same setup.

Minecraft’s official Bedrock instructions provide a Windows or Ubuntu/Linux ZIP. You extract it into an empty folder, launch the supplied executable or command-line file, and edit its configuration files. If you need Bedrock, follow that product’s current package and configuration instructions instead of applying the Java server steps above. Confirm the edition with every player before creating a world, because Java and Bedrock clients do not use identical server software.

Run McMyAdmin safely as a legacy service

  • Use a dedicated account. On Unix-like systems, the documented workflow explicitly separates root-only preparation from normal McMyAdmin operation. Keep the panel and Minecraft process under a non-root account.
  • Back up worlds and configuration. Copy world directories, panel configuration and any plugin or mod files while the server is stopped or after using a consistent backup method. A panel backup is not a substitute for an independently restorable copy.
  • Patch the operating system and runtime. McMyAdmin 2 no longer receives feature updates, so security maintenance must come from the host operating system, Java or Mono, firewall and account controls.
  • Limit administrative access. Use a strong unique panel password, avoid sharing it in shell history or chat, and restrict the administration port. A web panel exposed directly to the internet is a high-value target.
  • Record the exact versions. Keep a note of the McMyAdmin build, Minecraft release, Java or Mono version, memory setting and network ports. This makes rollback and troubleshooting possible when a Minecraft update changes runtime requirements.

Troubleshooting common installation failures

The executable says files are missing or will not start

Change into ~/McMyAdmin (or the Windows installation directory) and launch from there. McMyAdmin’s documented requirement is that it runs from its own directory; invoking it from another location is not supported.

The Linux installation has permission errors

Check which account owns the extracted files and which account is launching the panel. Perform only the documented preparation in a root shell, then give the non-root service account ownership of its McMyAdmin directory. Avoid solving every permission error by running the panel as root.

  • discover community creations in the new in-game store
  • access new mini games and game modes through servers

Mono reports that the program cannot run

On 32-bit Linux, macOS and BSD, verify that Mono is installed and that the mono command is available to the account running McMyAdmin. These platforms have no native McMyAdmin binary, so installing the Linux 64-bit executable is not a substitute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows reports a missing framework

Install .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. On Windows Server, add the corresponding feature in Server Manager, then retry the installer or service.

Minecraft starts and then stops

  • Check that the Java command is available to the McMyAdmin service account.
  • Read the console for an unaccepted EULA, incompatible Java version, missing server file or invalid option.
  • Reduce the memory allocation if the operating system is out of RAM or begins swapping.
  • Confirm that the selected release matches the Java version and any plugins or mods installed.

Local players can connect but internet players cannot

The game process is probably running, so inspect the host firewall, router port-forwarding rule, server LAN address and configured game port. The standard Java port is 25565, but a custom McMyAdmin setting must be forwarded instead if you changed it. Test from an external network rather than relying on a same-LAN public-address test.

Should you keep McMyAdmin or move to AMP?

For a fresh server, the publisher’s direction is unambiguous: McMyAdmin has been replaced by AMP, and McMyAdmin 2 is no longer receiving feature updates. A legacy installation can remain useful when its operating system, Minecraft release and existing workflows are stable, but it carries more maintenance responsibility than a current control panel.

Decision factor Legacy McMyAdmin AMP or another current option
Support status Replaced in 2018; no McMyAdmin 2 feature updates Evaluate the current product’s support and release policy before migration
Runtime burden Requires a native 64-bit Linux binary, or Mono on 32-bit Linux/macOS/BSD; Windows requires .NET 3.5 SP1 Depends on the current product and its supported operating systems
Migration effort No migration is needed if the existing world and configuration remain healthy Requires backups, version compatibility checks and a planned cutover
Network administration You still manage firewall rules, router forwarding and panel exposure Check whether your chosen option or host changes that responsibility; do not assume it does
Best fit Maintaining an established legacy deployment Starting a new server or reducing dependence on unsupported software

If you migrate, stop the old server, make a restorable backup, test the world on the new panel with the same Minecraft release, and change DNS or port-forwarding only after a local connection succeeds. Keep the old installation offline but intact until the new deployment has been verified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

McMyAdmin can still host a Java Edition Minecraft server when installed on a supported legacy platform, but it is no longer the recommended choice for new deployments. Install it from its own directory, run it under a non-root account on Unix-like systems, provide the correct Java runtime, accept the EULA, test locally, and expose only the required game port. For a new server, evaluate the publisher’s successor, AMP, instead.
