Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
Install the JEI jar that matches your exact Minecraft version and server loader (Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge) in the server’s mods folder, then install the same build and loader on every client that needs the item-and-recipe interface. For Minecraft 1.21.2 and newer, JEI should be installed on the server because recipes are synchronized from the server to clients. On 1.21.1 and earlier, a client-only installation can work, but several recipe and cheat-mode features remain disabled until JEI is also installed server-side.
What JEI adds to a server
Just Enough Items (JEI) is a Minecraft item and recipe viewer. When it loads correctly, it adds a searchable item column and search field beside the inventory or container screen. You can inspect how an item is crafted, see where it is used, and browse items supplied by installed mods instead of memorizing recipes or repeatedly checking external wikis. The official project pages are CurseForge and Modrinth.
Modrinth listed 83.2 million JEI downloads in 2026. That number is a platform download count, not a guarantee that a particular jar will load on your instance or that it improves server performance.
- R while hovering an item opens its recipe.
- U while hovering an item shows recipes that use it.
- Ctrl+O toggles the item-list overlay.
- Search supports
@modto filter by mod ID,#tooltipto search tooltip text, a leading-to exclude matches, and quoted phrases for an exact phrase search.
Decide whether JEI belongs on the server, the client, or both
The correct installation model depends first on the Minecraft version. Recipe data moved to a server-held model in 1.21.2, so treating every release as if it behaved like an older client-only setup can leave a player with an apparently working interface but incomplete recipes.
#1 Best Overall
| Minecraft version | JEI on server | JEI on client | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.21.2 and newer | Required for complete synchronization of recipes supplied by server mods. | Install the matching JEI build and loader on each player client that needs the interface. | Client receives the recipes held by the server, including recipes added by server-side mods. |
| 1.21.1 and earlier | Optional for basic viewing, but recommended when players need the disabled functions restored. | Can run against a vanilla or modded server. | Client-only viewing works, but the recipe-grid + button, some NBT-heavy item cheating, and deletion of items from the list are disabled. |
For a current 1.21.2-or-later modded server, the practical answer is “install JEI on both sides.” For an older server, client-only JEI is sufficient if you only want to look up recipes and uses and can accept the three limitations above.
Check the version and loader before downloading
JEI jars are not interchangeable. A build for Minecraft 1.20 is not a substitute for a build marked 1.20.1, and a Forge jar cannot be used in a Fabric instance. Write down the exact version shown by the server and the loader that starts it before opening a download page.
Identify the four values that must agree
- Minecraft version: for example, 1.21.2, 1.21.1, or 1.20.1. Include the full patch number.
- Server loader: Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge. A vanilla server does not provide a mod-loader environment in which JEI can run server-side.
- JEI build: choose the file whose Minecraft-version and loader labels match the first two values.
- Client environment: every client using JEI must run the same Minecraft version, the corresponding loader, and the same JEI build as the server where that matching build is required.
Loader-specific requirements
| Server loader | JEI download choice | Additional requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | JEI file labeled for the exact Minecraft version and Fabric. | Install the matching Fabric API as well. |
| Forge | JEI file labeled for the exact Minecraft version and Forge. | Use the Forge server and its corresponding client profile. |
| NeoForge | JEI file labeled for the exact Minecraft version and NeoForge. | Use the NeoForge server and its corresponding client profile. |
Use the version and loader filters on the JEI project page, or select the same values on Modrinth. The project’s installation guidance is also available at jei-mod.com/installing-jei/. Download the jar itself; do not unpack or rename its contents.
Install JEI on the server
Do this while the server is stopped. Editing the mods directory while the Java process is running can leave the process using an old file list until its next restart.
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the server console’s normal stop action and wait until the process has finished saving the world.
- Open the server root. This is the directory containing the server’s launch file and the
modsdirectory. Ifmodsdoes not exist, create a directory with exactly that name in the server root. - Confirm the loader. The server must actually be a Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge installation corresponding to the JEI file you selected. A loader mismatch cannot be repaired by placing the jar in a different directory.
- Copy the unmodified JEI jar. Place it directly in
mods, not in a nested folder such asmods/jei. Keep the file’s extension and contents unchanged. - Add Fabric API when applicable. Fabric servers need the Fabric API build matching the Minecraft version. Forge and NeoForge use their corresponding loader components instead of Fabric API.
- Check for duplicates. Leave one JEI jar for this instance. Remove older JEI builds or a second copy with a different filename before launching.
- Start the server and watch the log. A successful launch should pass the loader’s mod discovery stage without a missing-dependency or wrong-loader error. Stop and correct the named dependency or version rather than ignoring the error.
On 1.21.2 and newer, this server installation is what allows recipes held by the server to be sent to clients. Without it, a client may display vanilla recipes while failing to show recipes added by the server’s mods.
Install the matching JEI build on clients
Players need a client-side JEI installation for the visible overlay and keyboard controls. A server jar does not automatically install a mod into a player’s game directory.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
- Close the Minecraft launcher and the game.
- Open the
modsdirectory for the launcher profile or instance that connects to this server. - Copy the same JEI build used by the server into that client
modsdirectory. The Minecraft version and loader must match exactly. - On Fabric, copy the matching Fabric API to the client as well.
- Start that profile, connect to the server, and open an inventory or container screen.
For 1.21.1 and earlier, a client can use JEI against a vanilla or modded server without a server-side JEI jar. Install it on the server anyway when players need the recipe-grid + button, the fuller NBT-heavy item-cheating behavior, or the ability to delete items from the list; those functions are disabled in the client-only arrangement.
Verify that JEI loaded
Verification takes less than a minute and separates an installation problem from a keybind or display problem.
- Enter a world or connect to the target server.
- Open your inventory or another screen that normally accepts item interaction.
- Look at the right side of the screen. A vertical column of items and a search bar indicate that JEI’s interface is active.
- Hover an item and press R. A recipe view should open. Press U to see recipes that consume the item.
- Press Ctrl+O if the column is not visible; this shortcut toggles the overlay and it may simply be hidden.
- Type a distinctive item name into the search field, then try a mod filter such as
@examplemodif the pack contains a known mod. Clear the search to restore the complete list.
Seeing the panel but not a particular mod’s recipes usually points to synchronization or version selection, not to the overlay toggle. On 1.21.2 and newer, confirm that the server has JEI and that the server-side mod supplying those recipes is present and compatible.

Use JEI efficiently after installation
Find an item’s recipe or uses
Hover an item in the JEI column, your inventory, or a recipe grid. Press R for the recipe that creates it and U for recipes that use it. The recipe-grid + action can transfer ingredients into a crafting interface where that feature is available; on 1.21.1 and earlier it is one of the functions disabled by a client-only installation.
Search by mod, tooltip, or exclusion
@modidlimits results to items from a mod. Replacemodidwith the mod identifier shown by that mod.#tooltipsearches tooltip text, which is useful when the item’s display name does not contain the property you remember.- Prefix a term with
-to exclude it, such as-stonewhen you want to remove stone-named results. - Put a phrase in quotation marks when the words must appear together, such as
"Polished Andesite".
Search syntax filters the list; it does not repair missing server recipes. If a result is absent after clearing the search, continue with the troubleshooting checks below.

The item column is completely absent
- Press Ctrl+O; the overlay may be toggled off.
- Open the game’s mod list and confirm that JEI appears. If it does not, the jar is in the wrong
modsdirectory, the profile is different from the one you edited, or the loader rejected it. - Check that you copied the jar directly into
modsand restarted both the server and client after adding it. - Look for a second recipe viewer. Another viewer can occupy the same area or provide a conflicting overlay, making JEI appear missing even though it loaded.
The loader reports an error at startup
- Read the exact Minecraft version and loader named in the error. Replace the JEI jar with the build matching both values; a 1.20 file is not interchangeable with 1.20.1, and Forge and Fabric files are not interchangeable.
- On Fabric, install the matching Fabric API on both the server and client where required.
- Remove duplicate JEI jars, including an older file left in the same directory under a different filename.
- Restart after each correction so the loader performs a clean discovery pass.
The panel appears, but modded recipes are missing on 1.21.2+
- Install JEI on the server, not only on the client. These versions keep recipes on the server and send them to connected clients.
- Verify that the server and client use the same JEI build and loader.
- Confirm that the mod adding the missing recipe is installed and successfully loaded on the server. JEI cannot display a recipe that the server never registered.
- Clear the search field and remove filters such as
@modid,#tooltip, exclusions, or quoted phrases.
The panel appears on an older version, but actions are unavailable
On Minecraft 1.21.1 and earlier, this is expected when JEI is client-only. The recipe-grid + button, some NBT-heavy item cheating, and deleting items from the list are disabled in that configuration. Add the matching JEI jar to the server, restart it, and connect with the matching client build to restore those functions.
Best Value
Choose the installation layout for common server setups
| Server situation | Server JEI | Client JEI | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge on 1.21.2+ | Yes, with the exact loader and version build. | Yes, same build for each player. | Use both sides for server-held recipe synchronization. |
| Modded 1.21.1 or earlier; recipe viewing only | Optional. | Yes. | Client-only is adequate if the three documented feature limits are acceptable. |
Modded 1.21.1 or earlier; players need the + button or fuller cheat actions |
Yes. | Yes, same build. | Install both sides to restore those functions. |
| Vanilla server on 1.21.1 or earlier | Not needed for basic viewing. | Yes. | Use client-only JEI, accepting its feature limitations. |
Regardless of the row you choose, exact version and loader matching is the controlling requirement. If a hosting panel manages files for you, its file manager still needs the JEI jar in the server’s mods directory, and its selected loader must match the jar.

Installation checklist
- Exact Minecraft version recorded, including the patch number.
- Server loader identified as Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge.
- JEI jar filtered for that exact version and loader.
- Matching Fabric API added wherever a Fabric instance requires it.
- One unmodified JEI jar placed directly in the server
modsdirectory. - Same JEI build and loader installed in each client profile that needs the interface.
- Server and client restarted after file changes.
- Inventory panel, R, U, and Ctrl+O tested.
- For 1.21.2 and newer, JEI installed server-side so modded recipes synchronize.
Sources and version guidance
Use the JEI installation guide for the project’s current loader and placement instructions, and select files from the version filters on the CurseForge project page or Modrinth project page. Those pages are the appropriate places to check when a new Minecraft patch or loader release changes which build is available.
