Install ISPConfig on a fresh VPS or virtual machine running a supported Debian or Ubuntu release, then use the ISPConfig project’s current automated Perfect Server installer. The project describes that route as the easiest installation method. Before you start, set the server hostname, static public IP, DNS plan and provider networking; the installer configures a complete hosting stack, so adding it to an already customized production server can create conflicts.

What ISPConfig installs and manages

ISPConfig is open-source Linux hosting-control-panel software released under a BSD license. It lets you administer one server or several servers from one panel. Depending on the options selected during installation, it can provision websites, mailboxes, DNS zones, FTP accounts, databases and usage statistics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The panel is not a physical product or a hosted service that you purchase as a box. You install the software on infrastructure that you control, such as a VPS, a virtual machine or a physical Linux server. The ISPConfig download page displayed version 3.3.2p1 when checked on 15 October 2026; version numbers and supported operating systems change, so check the project’s download and installation pages immediately before installing.

Choose a supported Linux release

The ISPConfig documentation says Debian is the recommended distribution. The services documentation also identifies Debian 11–13 and Ubuntu 22.04–24.04 as recommended choices, and confirms that ISPConfig can run on physical servers and virtual machines.

Distribution Release support listed by ISPConfig Position in the current installation guidance
Debian 11–13 Recommended distribution; covered by the automated guide
Ubuntu 22.04–26.04 22.04 and 24.04 are identified as recommended; the automated guide covers the 22.04/24.04 era
AlmaLinux 8–10 Listed as supported on the product page
Rocky Linux 8–10 Listed as supported on the product page
CentOS 8 Listed as supported on the product page

Support statements are time-sensitive. A release can remain installed while no longer being the best choice for a new deployment, and an installer can change its assumptions. Treat the current Perfect Server guide for your exact release as authoritative rather than copying commands from an older tutorial.

Decide whether a VPS is suitable

Use a VPS when you want control

A VPS gives you administrative access, a public address and the ability to run the web, mail, DNS, FTP and database services that ISPConfig manages. It is appropriate when you are prepared to maintain the operating system, monitor services, handle backups and respond to security notices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use managed operations when you do not want server administration

ISPConfig does not remove the operational responsibility of the underlying server. A managed VPS arrangement may handle some operating-system and infrastructure tasks, but you must confirm that the provider permits control-panel installation and allows the services you intend to run. ISPConfig’s official material does not establish a universal provider, price or service-level recommendation.

Do not assume a published minimum size

The official material used for this guide does not provide a universal CPU, RAM, storage or port-sizing table. Choose capacity based on the number of sites, mailboxes, databases, traffic and logging you expect, and follow any sizing advice in the current guide for your selected release. Avoid presenting an uncited “minimum VPS” specification as an ISPConfig requirement.

Prepare the VPS before running the installer

1. Provision a clean image

Create a new VPS or virtual machine with one of the supported distributions and an administrative account. A clean image is important because the installer configures a broad service stack. Existing web servers, mail transfer agents, DNS daemons, database servers or custom firewall rules can collide with the configuration that ISPConfig expects.

  • Choose the exact distribution and release you checked in the current ISPConfig documentation.
  • Use a new instance, or rebuild an old one, when the server contains services you cannot confidently remove or reconcile.
  • Keep a provider console or recovery path available in case networking is interrupted during installation.

2. Set the hostname correctly

Give the server a fully qualified hostname before installation, such as panel.example.net. The hostname should resolve to the server’s static public IP and should be the name you intend to use for administration and service identity. Do not proceed with a temporary provider hostname if you plan to replace it immediately afterward; change the system hostname and its DNS deliberately first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Plan DNS and mail identity

Decide which DNS service will be authoritative for your domains. ISPConfig can manage DNS zones, but your registrar or another DNS operator must delegate the domain to the nameservers you actually run. Plan the records required for each service:

  • A records: point names such as www.example.net to an IPv4 address.
  • CNAME records: create aliases where a name should follow another hostname.
  • MX records: identify the mail host for a domain.
  • SRV records: publish service endpoints when an application requires them.
  • TXT records: carry verification or policy text, including mail-authentication policies where applicable.

Use a static public IP. If the provider changes the address during a rebuild, update the hostname and every dependent DNS record before testing services.

4. Check provider networking

Confirm that the VPS has outbound and inbound connectivity required by the services you selected, and that the provider does not block the mail or web traffic you need. The exact firewall and port requirements depend on the services and the current guide; use those instructions instead of applying a generic port list from an unrelated tutorial.

5. Back up anything that will be replaced

The recommended workflow assumes a fresh system. If you are reusing a machine, export any data you need and record the current network and service configuration first. A panel installation is not a safe way to preserve an existing, hand-built stack.

Automatic installation: the recommended route

ISPConfig calls its automated installer the easiest installation method. It is delivered through the project’s current Perfect Server guides, which are maintained for particular distribution releases. The guide is version-sensitive: select the document matching the operating system you actually provisioned.

  1. Open the ISPConfig documentation and choose the automated Perfect Server guide. Verify the guide’s distribution, release and installer assumptions against your VPS before executing anything.
  2. Read the prerequisites and warnings. Confirm that the machine is clean, you have administrative access, the hostname and IP are correct, and DNS and provider networking are ready.
  3. Connect to the VPS as the administrative user. Use the provider’s documented secure access method and keep the console available while the installer changes network and service configuration.
  4. Run the installer exactly as the current guide shows. Do not substitute commands copied from a different release, an old blog post or a distribution with different package names.
  5. Select only the services you need. The installer presents choices for the web server, mail, DNS, FTP, database and related components. Make these choices based on your hosting design, not on the assumption that every service must be enabled.
  6. Let the installer complete without closing the session. It may install packages, create users, write configuration files and enable multiple daemons. Interrupting it can leave a partially configured system.
  7. Record the results. Save the administrator credentials, panel URL, server hostname and any nameserver or service information displayed at the end. Store credentials in a password manager rather than in a public note.
  8. Apply current update and security guidance. Follow the project’s post-install instructions for updating ISPConfig and the operating system, restricting administration and maintaining backups.

The exact prompts and defaults can change as the installer evolves. That is why a current guide is safer than a fixed command block reproduced here.

Choose the service stack deliberately

Function Software choices identified by ISPConfig What the choice affects
Web server Apache2 or nginx How HTTP requests are served and how site configuration is generated
SMTP mail Postfix Sending and receiving mail transport
POP3/IMAP mail access Dovecot Mailbox access for mail clients and webmail integrations
FTP PureFTPd File-transfer accounts and sessions
DNS BIND or PowerDNS Authoritative DNS zones managed from the panel
Database MariaDB or MySQL Database creation and credentials for hosted applications

Apache2 versus nginx

Both web servers are supported. Select the one that matches your application’s compatibility requirements and your team’s operational experience. The official capability list establishes support for both; it does not declare one universally faster or better. If an application depends on Apache-specific directives, confirm its requirements before selecting nginx. If your team already maintains nginx configurations, choosing nginx can reduce the learning curve, but the panel remains responsible for generating site configuration.

Mail and DNS choices

Enable mail services only when you intend to operate mail on the VPS. Running mail adds deliverability, authentication, mailbox security and monitoring work. Enable DNS services when you will host authoritative zones there; otherwise, keep DNS with your existing operator and create the required records in that system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Database choice

Choose MariaDB or MySQL according to the applications you plan to host and their documented compatibility. Keep database administration credentials separate from panel credentials, and create one database account per application where practical.

Automatic installer versus manual stack installation

Approach Best fit Main advantage Main risk
Automated Perfect Server installer Most new deployments The project describes it as the easiest route and aligns package configuration with the selected guide Running a stale installer or selecting unsuitable services can still produce a broken deployment
Manual installation Experienced administrators with a specific, tested architecture Fine-grained control over each package and configuration file Every service, integration and ISPConfig expectation must be configured and maintained correctly

Manual installation is not simply “install Linux, then add a panel.” You must understand how the web server, mail stack, DNS daemon, FTP service, database server, permissions, certificates and panel metadata interact. Unless you have a documented reason to diverge, the automated guide reduces the number of independent decisions you must make.

What to do immediately after installation

Open the panel and verify identity

Visit the panel URL reported by the installer, authenticate with the administrator credentials you recorded, and confirm that the displayed hostname and server correspond to the VPS you intended to configure. If the URL does not load, check provider networking, DNS resolution and the service status before changing configuration files manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply updates and protect administration

Use ISPConfig’s current update instructions and the operating system’s normal security-update process. Restrict administrative access to the people and networks that need it, use unique credentials, and keep recovery credentials offline. The precise commands and supported update path can change between ISPConfig releases, so follow the current project documentation.

Verify the enabled services

Confirm that each service you selected is running and that unneeded services are not enabled. Check that the web server can answer a test site, that DNS returns the expected records, that mail services accept the intended connections, and that database creation works before migrating production data.

Create a first site

  1. In the panel, open the site-management area and create a site for the domain.
  2. Enter the domain, document-root and PHP or application settings required by that site.
  3. Create the matching DNS records, either in ISPConfig’s DNS module or at your external DNS provider.
  4. Wait for DNS changes to propagate, then test the domain over HTTP and HTTPS.
  5. Review logs and permissions before uploading application data.

Create mail and database resources only as needed

For mail, create the domain and mailbox resources, then publish the MX and relevant TXT records. For an application database, create a database and a dedicated user, store the credentials securely, and test connectivity from the application host. Avoid reusing the panel administrator account for applications.

Single-server and multiserver designs

Single server

A single VPS is the simplest topology: web, mail, DNS, databases and the control panel share one machine. It is easier to understand and administer, but every service competes for the same resources and a single outage affects all hosted functions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multiple servers

ISPConfig can manage more than one server from one control panel. You can separate roles, such as web, database, mail or DNS, when isolation, capacity planning or failure boundaries justify the added complexity. Each server still needs a supported operating system, reliable networking and a configuration that matches the current multiserver guidance.

Do not treat multiserver mode as an automatic high-availability system. Separate machines can improve isolation, but they also add network dependencies, credential management and backup paths that you must design explicitly.

Common installation failures and recovery

The installer refuses to run or stops on package checks

  • Confirm that the distribution and release exactly match the selected Perfect Server guide.
  • Recheck that the image is clean and that another web, mail, DNS or database service is not already installed.
  • Read the installer output for the first failed package or prerequisite; later errors may be consequences rather than causes.
  • If the system has been partially modified, rebuilding from a fresh supported image is often safer than attempting to guess which configuration files to undo.

The panel is unreachable after completion

  • Use the provider console to confirm that the VPS is still online and has the expected public IP.
  • Verify that the hostname resolves to that address and that provider-level filtering is not blocking the administration connection.
  • Check the service status and logs using the troubleshooting procedure in the current guide.
  • Do not disable security controls permanently just to make the panel appear; identify the specific rule or networking mismatch.

A site resolves to the wrong server

Inspect the domain’s A or CNAME records and any cached or secondary DNS data. Confirm that the site’s hostname in ISPConfig exactly matches the name being tested. If an external DNS provider is authoritative, changing records inside ISPConfig will not change public answers until delegation points to the ISPConfig nameservers.

Mail does not arrive

Check the MX record, the target host’s A record, the selected mail services and provider restrictions on mail traffic. Ensure that the mailbox exists in ISPConfig and that the domain’s TXT policies are consistent with your mail design. Deliverability also depends on reputation and recipient-provider policy; a successful local configuration does not guarantee inbox placement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Existing applications break after installation

This usually indicates that the machine was not truly clean or that the chosen web-server and database options do not match the applications. Restore from your backup, document the application’s requirements and rebuild on a supported image when necessary instead of layering more untested changes onto the server.

Operational checklist

  • Supported Debian or Ubuntu release selected and verified against the current guide.
  • Fresh VPS or VM with administrative access and a recovery console.
  • Fully qualified hostname and static public IP configured.
  • DNS authority and required A, CNAME, MX, SRV and TXT records planned.
  • Provider networking and service restrictions checked.
  • Automated Perfect Server guide selected for the exact release.
  • Web, mail, DNS, FTP and database components chosen intentionally.
  • Installer output, panel URL and credentials stored securely.
  • ISPConfig and operating-system updates applied using current project guidance.
  • First site, DNS records, mailboxes and databases tested before production migration.
  • Backups, monitoring and an administrator recovery path established.

Which installation path should you choose?

For a new Linux VPS, choose Debian 11–13 when you want the distribution ISPConfig explicitly recommends, or choose a supported Ubuntu release when it better matches your applications and administration practices. Start with a clean image, prepare identity and DNS, and follow the current automated Perfect Server guide. Use a manual stack only when you have a documented technical reason and the expertise to maintain every component it replaces.

ISPConfig’s value is the unified management layer: one panel can coordinate websites, mail, DNS, FTP, databases and statistics across one or more Linux servers. That convenience depends on disciplined preparation and ongoing maintenance; the installation is the beginning of operating the hosting platform, not the end.
