You cannot install Internet Explorer 11 as a standalone browser on Windows 11. Internet Explorer 11 desktop support ended on June 15, 2022, and Microsoft does not provide a supported Windows 11 installer for the old browser.
The supported replacement is Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge. IE mode opens selected websites with Internet Explorer 11’s Trident MSHTML engine while normal Edge tabs continue using the modern Chromium engine. Microsoft currently expects to support IE mode through at least 2029 and says it will provide one year of notice before retiring it.
This guide shows how to enable IE mode, add legacy websites, check whether a page is actually using it, and fix the most common errors.

What “install Internet Explorer” means on Windows 11
On Windows 11, enabling Internet Explorer-related components does not restore an Internet Explorer desktop window. It supplies compatibility components that Microsoft Edge uses for IE mode.

Do not use old articles that tell you to download IE11 for Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10 and run that installer on Windows 11. Those downloads do not provide a supported Windows 11 solution.
Step 1: Enable IE mode in Microsoft Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Enter
edge://settings/defaultBrowserin the address bar and press Enter. - Find Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode (IE mode), or the similarly named Internet Explorer compatibility setting.
- Set the dropdown to Allow.
- Select Restart when Edge offers to restart, or close and reopen every Edge window manually.
If the setting is missing or greyed out, the computer is probably managed by an organization. Group Policy can control IE mode, so you may need to contact your administrator rather than changing the setting yourself.
Step 2: Open a website in IE mode
For non-Enterprise Edge 141 and later
Microsoft’s current procedure for a non-Enterprise device running Edge 141 or later uses the IE mode pages list rather than relying on the older per-page menu command.
- Open Edge and select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings, then Default browser.
- Under Internet Explorer mode pages, select Add.
- Enter the complete address of the legacy website, such as
https://legacy.example.com. - Select Add, then return to the site or reload the tab.
The site should now render in IE mode. Add the site’s relevant address, not just the company’s home page. For example, if the old application runs at https://portal.example.com/app, add the address Microsoft Edge requires for that application rather than assuming https://example.com will cover every host.
For Enterprise or policy-enabled Edge
On an Enterprise device, or on a computer where the relevant policy has enabled the command, use this method:

- Navigate to the legacy website.
- Select Settings and more (…).
- Select Reload in Internet Explorer Mode.
If you do not see Reload in Internet Explorer Mode, the required policy may not be enabled. Microsoft identifies the relevant policy as Allow unconfigured sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode. An administrator can also deploy an Enterprise Mode Site List, which is the preferred approach for managing many internal applications.
How to confirm that IE mode is active
Look at the left side of Edge’s address bar. When a page is running in IE mode, Edge displays an Internet Explorer logo indicator. If the indicator is absent, the page is using the normal Chromium-based Edge engine.

IE mode uses the Trident MSHTML engine from Internet Explorer 11. It can support older technologies such as:
- ActiveX controls
- Browser Helper Objects
- Internet Explorer document modes
- Enterprise modes
- Internet Explorer security-zone settings
Only pages configured for IE mode use that engine. Modern websites continue to use Chromium. Edge extensions that directly interact with IE-mode page content are not supported.
Make sure the Windows prerequisite is enabled
IE mode requires Internet Explorer 11 to be enabled in Windows Features. This does not create a supported IE11 desktop browser; it enables the compatibility components Edge needs.

- Press
Windows + R. - Type
optionalfeaturesand press Enter. - Look for Internet Explorer 11.
- If it is available and unchecked, select it and choose OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted, then restart Edge.
Microsoft lists Windows 11 as a supported operating system for IE mode and recommends installing the latest Windows and Edge updates. There is no separate Windows 11 KB prerequisite listed in Microsoft’s current IE mode prerequisite table.

Check whether Edge is installed system-wide
The administrator-privilege error can occur when Edge was installed only for the current user. To check:
- Enter
edge://versionin Edge’s address bar. - Find Executable path.
- Check the beginning of the path:
C:Program Filesindicates a system-level installation.C:Usersindicates a user-level installation.
If Edge is installed under C:Users, Microsoft’s documented remedy is to uninstall it and reinstall it with administrator privileges. For an Edge installer that supports the option, the system-level command is:
installer.exe --system-levelUse an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell window and the installer supplied by your organization or Microsoft. On a work computer, let IT perform this change.
Use IE mode diagnostics
For more detailed troubleshooting, open:
edge://compat/iediagnosticThis diagnostic page can show registry checks, the IE mode API version, IE mode configuration, command-line switches, and applied Group Policy settings. It is particularly useful when the IE mode setting is enabled but a site still opens with the modern Edge engine.

What IE mode does not support
IE mode is a compatibility layer, not a complete copy of the old Internet Explorer interface. Microsoft says it does not support:
- Internet Explorer toolbars
- IE settings or policies that control the navigation menu
- Internet Explorer 11 or Microsoft Edge F12 developer tools
For security and maintenance, keep the legacy site in IE mode only. Do not attempt to use IE mode for ordinary browsing, banking, email, or modern websites.
FAQ
Can I download Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 11?
No. Microsoft does not provide a supported standalone Internet Explorer 11 installation for Windows 11. Use Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge instead.
Does enabling Internet Explorer 11 in Windows Features install the old browser?
No. It enables compatibility components required by Edge IE mode. It does not restore a supported Internet Explorer desktop application.

The computer is likely managed by Group Policy or another organizational policy. An administrator controls whether sites can be reloaded in IE mode and may deploy an Enterprise Mode Site List.

Why can’t I find “Reload in Internet Explorer Mode”?
On non-Enterprise devices running Edge 141 or later, Microsoft’s current procedure is to add the website under Settings > Default browser > Internet Explorer mode pages, then reload it. The menu command is available when the relevant policy allows it.
How long will Microsoft support IE mode?
Microsoft currently expects IE mode to remain supported through at least 2029 and says it will provide one year of notice before retiring it.
Can IE mode run ActiveX applications?
IE mode supports several legacy technologies, including ActiveX controls, Browser Helper Objects, document modes, enterprise modes, and IE security-zone settings. The specific application may still require correct Windows, security, and site-list configuration.

If the controls are unavailable or managed, your organization must configure the required policy or Enterprise Mode Site List.
