Install ImageMagick and the PHP Imagick extension as two separate layers: ImageMagick supplies the image-processing engine and command-line tools, while Imagick is the PHP extension that calls that engine. On most Linux systems, start with the distribution package manager, then verify both magick and the Imagick module loaded by the PHP runtime that will run your application.
Understand the two components before installing
ImageMagick is the native application and library that reads, transforms, and writes images. Its command-line entry point is usually magick. Imagick is a native PHP extension that exposes the ImageMagick API to PHP code; it is not the same thing as the magick executable.
The PHP documentation identifies Imagick as a PECL extension that is not bundled with PHP. Installing ImageMagick alone therefore does not make new Imagick() available, and installing a PHP module alone does not provide the underlying ImageMagick libraries. Both layers must be present and compatible.
- ImageMagick layer: the
magickexecutable, ImageMagick libraries, delegates, and policy configuration. - PHP layer:
imagick.so, enabled in the configuration read by the target PHP SAPI. - Runtime layer: the CLI, PHP-FPM pool, Apache module, queue worker, or other process that actually loads the extension.
The Imagick project describes package-manager installation as the preferred approach because a package manager installs ImageMagick along with the extension and keeps the components aligned. Use a source build only when you need a version, delegate, or installation prefix that your distribution does not provide.

Check the active PHP runtime first
Multiple PHP versions and SAPIs can coexist. A module visible to the command-line interpreter may still be absent from PHP-FPM or Apache. Identify the binary and configuration before choosing a package or compiling anything.
- Find the executable selected by your shell:
command -v php - Record its version and build information:
php -v - Display the configuration files read by that CLI binary:
php --ini - For a web application, check the PHP-FPM pool or Apache PHP configuration as well. The web SAPI can use a different binary and a different
php.inifrom the CLI.
On Debian- and Ubuntu-family systems, install the Imagick package matching the major PHP version reported by the runtime. On RPM-based systems, use the corresponding PHP Imagick package from the repositories enabled for that release. Package names and availability differ by distribution, so confirm the package name rather than assuming that a package built for another PHP version will load.

For a standard Debian or Ubuntu installation, the usual package names are imagemagick and php-imagick. The unversioned PHP package may resolve to the distribution’s default PHP version; if you run another supported version, use the version-specific package supplied by that release.
- Refresh repository metadata:
sudo apt update - Install ImageMagick and the PHP extension:
sudo apt install imagemagick php-imagick - Check the native installation:
magick identify -version - Check whether the selected CLI PHP loaded Imagick:
php -m | grep -i imagick php --ri imagick - Restart every long-running process that must use the new module. Depending on your setup, that may be PHP-FPM, Apache, a queue worker, or another service. A restarted process reads its PHP configuration again; an already running worker does not.
If apt reports that no matching php-imagick package exists, verify the distribution release, enabled repositories, and the PHP version selected by your application. Do not substitute an extension compiled for a different PHP ABI merely to make the package command succeed.

Install on RPM-based distributions
Fedora, RHEL-compatible systems, and other RPM-based distributions commonly use the package names ImageMagick and php-imagick, although repository modules and versioned package names vary.
- Refresh metadata with the package manager used by the distribution, for example:
sudo dnf makecacheor, on systems that still use Yum:
sudo yum makecache - Install the packages:
sudo dnf install ImageMagick php-imagickIf the release uses Yum, use its equivalent install command.
- Verify ImageMagick:
magick identify -version - Verify the PHP module:
php -m | grep -i imagick php --ri imagick - Restart PHP-FPM, Apache, or the relevant worker after installation.
If the repository offers several PHP streams, select the stream used by the application before installing php-imagick. Keep the ImageMagick development and runtime packages from a compatible repository when you are using a non-default stream.
Build ImageMagick from source
A source build is justified when the distribution package is too old, when you need delegates or codecs not enabled by the package, or when the binaries must live under a controlled prefix. It also transfers responsibility for updates and policy decisions from the distribution to you.
Prepare development dependencies
Install a compiler toolchain, the development libraries required by the delegates you intend to use, and ImageMagick’s development headers and pkg-config metadata. The exact package names depend on the distribution. If the headers are installed under a custom prefix, record that prefix and ensure the build can find it through the relevant include, library, and PKG_CONFIG_PATH settings.

Configure, compile, and install
- Obtain and unpack the ImageMagick release you have selected, or clone the corresponding release source using the official source instructions.
- Change into the source directory and configure it. A basic build starts with:
./configureReview the summary carefully for the delegates and formats that will actually be enabled.
- Compile:
makeUse the distribution’s documented parallel-build option only when the machine has enough memory and CPU capacity.
- Install the compiled files:
sudo make install - Verify the installed executable. If the prefix is not on
PATH, call the full path or update the service environment before testing:magick identify -version
Keep the source tree, configuration summary, installation prefix, and delegate decisions with your deployment records. They are needed to reproduce the build and to diagnose a later library mismatch.
Build and enable Imagick from source
Build Imagick only after the ImageMagick libraries and development headers are installed. The compiler, phpize, PHP development headers, and php-config must correspond to the PHP binary that will load the extension.

- Clone the official Imagick repository:
git clone https://github.com/Imagick/imagick - Enter the checkout:
cd imagick - Generate the PHP extension build system with the matching tool:
phpize - Configure against the ImageMagick installation visible to that PHP build:
./configureIf ImageMagick is under a non-standard prefix, provide the appropriate include, library, or
PKG_CONFIG_PATHsettings for that prefix. - Compile and install:
make sudo make install
PECL package metadata lists ImageMagick 6.5.3-10 or newer and PHP 5.6.0 or newer as minimum requirements. Those are package metadata minimums, not a promise that every current Imagick release works with every ImageMagick and PHP combination. The stable Imagick 3.8.1 release is dated 2025-11-26; check compatibility with your exact PHP and ImageMagick versions before standardizing a build.
Enable the installed module
- Find the PHP configuration used by the target SAPI. For the CLI, start with:
php --iniFor PHP-FPM or Apache, inspect that service’s pool or module configuration rather than assuming it uses the CLI file.
- Add this directive to the appropriate configuration file:
extension=imagick.so - Restart PHP-FPM, Apache, and any persistent workers that need the extension.
- Confirm that the target runtime sees the module:
php --ri imagick
If the extension installs into a directory not searched by PHP, compare the installation directory reported by php-config with the active PHP extension directory and correct the PHP configuration before restarting the service.

Use the official Linux AppImage
The official ImageMagick download page provides a pre-built Linux AppImage. It is a complete portable ImageMagick application that does not require a traditional package installation. This option is useful when you need a self-contained ImageMagick command for a tool or a user account.
- Download the AppImage from the official ImageMagick download page and keep it in a directory controlled by the account that will run it.
- Make the file executable:
chmod +x ./ImageMagick-*.AppImage - Run a version check from that directory:
./ImageMagick-*.AppImage identify -version - If scripts need to call it as
magick, use an explicit wrapper or path rather than assuming the AppImage has been added to the systemPATH. - Inspect the active ImageMagick policy before processing untrusted files or enabling formats and delegates with higher risk:
magick -list policyUse the AppImage’s bundled command or the corresponding full path when
magickis not globally available.
The AppImage supplies ImageMagick only. It does not place imagick.so in PHP’s extension directory and does not configure PHP. Install Imagick separately with distribution packages or the source/PECL workflow, and ensure that the extension links to the ImageMagick libraries available at runtime.
Verify both layers independently
Verify ImageMagick
Run:
magick identify -versionA successful result prints ImageMagick version and build information. If the command is not found, the package is missing or a custom installation prefix is not on the shell or service PATH. If it reports missing shared libraries, inspect the runtime linker configuration and confirm that the libraries installed by the build are visible to the process.
Verify the CLI PHP module
Run both checks:
php -m | grep -i imagick
php --ri imagickThe first shows whether the module name appears in the loaded-module list. The second prints Imagick-specific configuration and version details. An empty result usually means that the active php.ini does not enable the extension, the extension was installed for another PHP version, or the module failed to load because of a library mismatch.

Verify the web runtime
CLI verification is not enough when the application runs through PHP-FPM or Apache. Confirm the PHP binary and configuration for the web SAPI, restart the service, and run a small application-level check:

Troubleshoot common installation failures
php -m does not show Imagick
- Run
command -v php,php -v, andphp --inito verify that you are inspecting the intended PHP binary. - Check that the configuration read by that SAPI contains
extension=imagick.soor that the distribution package enabled the module automatically. - For a web application, inspect the PHP-FPM pool or Apache configuration; it may use a different PHP version from the shell.
- Restart the service or worker. Long-running processes do not load a newly enabled module until they restart.
The build cannot find MagickWand or MagickCore
Install the distribution’s ImageMagick development package, not only the runtime package. If ImageMagick was installed under a custom prefix, point PKG_CONFIG_PATH and the compiler and linker search paths at that prefix, then rerun phpize, ./configure, and the build.
The extension has loader or symbol errors
Compare the ImageMagick major version used while compiling Imagick with the libraries available when PHP starts. A module built against one major version can fail when the loader finds another. Rebuild Imagick against the runtime libraries, or make the intended library set unambiguous through the distribution packages, linker configuration, and service environment.
CLI works but the website fails
This is usually a SAPI mismatch rather than an ImageMagick failure. Verify the web process’s PHP binary, extension directory, and configuration; enable the module there; restart PHP-FPM or Apache; and repeat the minimal new Imagick() test through the web runtime.
Image formats are denied
ImageMagick policy can restrict formats, coders, delegates, and external operations. Review the policy with magick -list policy. Treat PDF, PostScript, and external delegates as deliberate security decisions, especially on an exposed upload or conversion service. Do not weaken policy merely to make an untrusted file process successfully; first determine whether the format is required and isolate the workload appropriately.
