For the currently documented homebrew route, you need a Zune HD running firmware 4.5. Install Project Lyra on the player, then use Lyra’s on-device Mods tab to browse and install available games and other mods. The Wi-Fi browser method needs no PC, but the Zune reboots during installation.
These steps do not apply to every Zune model: older Zune 30 and Zune 120 devices use different tools and procedures. If you have a Zune HD, follow the Lyra method below; archived app and game packages can also be synced separately through the legacy Zune software.
Check your Zune model and firmware
Project Lyra’s current install documentation targets the Zune HD on firmware 4.5. Confirm that your player is a Zune HD before proceeding; instructions for other Zune models use different firmware and deployment paths. See Project Lyra’s Getting started page for its supported scope.
Install Project Lyra over Wi-Fi
The simplest documented installation uses the Zune HD’s own browser and a Wi-Fi connection. You do not need a computer or a preliminary download for this route.

- Connect the Zune HD to Wi-Fi and open its web browser.
- Go to
install.zune.moeand tap Install. - Wait for the installer to finish and the player to reboot automatically.
Project Lyra says the browser installer writes a small installer to Flash2lyraboot.exe. That installer fetches the platform package, checks it against a SHA-256 digest compiled into the installer, unpacks Lyra into flash2automation, and reboots the device. The project also notes that the browser exploit depends on a race in the browser’s script engine; if the page reports that an attempt did not take, tap Install again. What to know about the connection
According to Project Lyra, the installer page and package are delivered over plain HTTP because the Zune HD browser cannot complete a current TLS handshake and lacks a certificate authority that signs for the domain. The installer’s compiled SHA-256 digest is used to check the package. After installation, Lyra downloads mods using TLS through its own stack. This describes the project’s stated implementation, not an independent security audit.

Install games through Lyra’s Mods tab
Installing Lyra is the platform setup; adding a game or other mod is a separate step. After the player restarts:
- Open the Mods tab on the Lyra home screen.
- Browse the repository and select an entry to view its details.
- Choose the install option for the mod you want and allow the download and installation to complete.
Repository entries include names, authors, categories, and descriptions. The available feed can change, so use the catalog shown on your device rather than expecting a fixed list. Optional: install Lyra from a PC over USB
If you cannot use the Zune HD browser route, Project Lyra documents two PC deployment options carrying the same Lyra payload: deploy a Deploy Kit folder with zune-deploy over USB-MTP, or deploy an XNA package through the XNA Game Studio Connect / Visual Studio path. The player must be connected and enumerated over USB. The Deploy Kit method also lists a ~/.mtpz-data authentication file as a prerequisite. Follow the tool-specific instructions on the Lyra install page.
Microsoft’s Zune HD manual describes connecting the player to a computer with its sync cable. A compatible cable is relevant only if you choose USB deployment and do not already have one; it is not needed for the Wi-Fi installation.

Alternative: sync archived Zune HD games with Zune software
A separate community-maintained procedure covers older Zune HD app and game packages. It does not install Lyra; it places selected packages in the legacy Zune software’s Applications folder and syncs them to the player.
- Download and extract the app or game package you want to use.
- Create
%LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftZuneApplicationsif the folder does not already exist. - Move the selected package files into that folder.
- Connect the Zune HD and open the Zune software to sync the packages.
These steps come from Josh Wong’s Zune HD app and game setup guide. The guide warns that some apps depend on external services that have changed or been decommissioned, while it says most games should be playable. That is not a guarantee that every archived package is available, intact, or functional.

Why older XNA instructions are different
Microsoft’s XNA Game Studio 3.1 documentation describes a developer deployment workflow and says XNA supports Zune devices running firmware 3.0 or later. It requires the XNA/Visual Studio toolchain and a connected device. This is historical guidance for deploying developer-built projects, not a prerequisite for the current Lyra browser install or the legacy package-sync method.
