The safest arrangement is a modded PC installation used only for Story Mode and a clean installation used for official GTA Online. Keep archive and script changes inside the game’s mods folder, disable BattlEye only when playing Story Mode if your platform supports that setting, and restore an unmodified, BattlEye-enabled setup before connecting online. Rockstar says modding online games, manipulating protected game code, or interfering with other players can lead to account suspensions.
This guide explains the practical installation sequence, how to switch between the two environments, what BattlEye errors mean, and how to recover without deleting important Windows files. It applies to the PC versions of Grand Theft Auto V; always check whether a mod supports the Legacy or Enhanced edition you own.

What “safe” modding means in GTA V
There is no supported way to take file-changing mods into official GTA Online. “Safe” means isolating those changes to Story Mode and ensuring that the files and anti-cheat configuration used for an online session are normal and unmodified.
Rockstar’s current Single-Player or Story Mode mods policy page, last updated September 15, 2026, points to its Terms of Service, Creator Platform License Agreement, and Mod Guidelines. Its separate account-action guidance, last updated May 20, 2024, specifically identifies modding in online games, manipulating protected code, and interfering with another player’s experience as conduct that can trigger action against an account.

- This game will no longer support Windows 7 or 8 operating systems starting January 30, 2024.
That is different from saying every Story Mode mod automatically causes a suspension. The practical risk comes from allowing modified files or prohibited software into an official online session. A clean-online workflow reduces that risk; selecting “Story Mode” from the menu while leaving a heavily modified installation in place is not as strong a separation.
How BattlEye separates Story Mode from GTA Online
BattlEye is Rockstar’s anti-cheat component for GTA Online. Rockstar’s BattlEye FAQ, last updated June 17, 2025, says BattlEye only needs to be active during online play and may be disabled for Story Mode, depending on the launcher or platform. Rockstar’s troubleshooting instructions, last updated February 24, 2026, also state that GTA Online will not connect to official servers when BattlEye is disabled.
Use that distinction as a one-way rule:
- Story Mode: a modded installation and, where supported, BattlEye disabled.
- Official GTA Online: an unmodified installation, normal launcher configuration, and BattlEye enabled.
Disabling BattlEye is not an online workaround. It prevents an official online connection; it does not make online use of mods acceptable.
Check these requirements before installing anything
Identify your GTA V edition
PC installations now commonly appear as Legacy or Enhanced. The community setup guide from GTAPoliceMods notes that they use separate installation folders and that a mod made for one edition does not necessarily work in the other. Read the mod’s own compatibility statement before downloading it.

| Check | What to confirm | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Edition | Legacy or Enhanced | File locations, loaders, and scripts may differ. |
| Mod type | Archive replacement, script, or both | Archive mods generally use the mods folder; scripts need a compatible script loader. |
| Required tools | OpenIV components, ScriptHookV, or other dependencies listed by the author | Installing an unnecessary loader adds another possible failure point. |
| Removal method | Whether files can be removed from mods or replaced with a clean backup |
A reversible installation is easier to troubleshoot. |
Make a recoverable backup
Back up the game before adding a loader or changing an archive. A full copy of the installation is the simplest recovery option; at minimum, preserve the original archives that you intend to modify and keep a record of the files added beside GTA5.exe. Do not rely on the mod manager or the game’s file verification as your only backup.
The GTAPoliceMods “Getting started with mods” guide, checked October 6, 2026, recommends using a mods folder so changed archives can be removed without overwriting the originals. The guide is a community procedure, not Rockstar’s official installation method, so follow the current readme supplied with each tool as well.
Prepare a clean online state
Before you begin, launch the unmodified game once and confirm that Story Mode loads. Close the game and the launcher before copying files. If you already have mods installed, restore the original files or create a separate clean copy first; do not assume that turning BattlEye on will repair modified game data.

- Experience entertainment blockbusters Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online — now upgraded for a new generation with stunning visuals, faster loading, 3D audio, and more, plus exclusive content for GTA Online players.
- Welcome to Los Santos - When a young street hustler, a retired bank robber, and a terrifying psychopath find themselves entangled with some of the most frightening and deranged elements of the criminal underworld, the U.S. government, and the entertainment industry, they must pull off a series of dangerous heists to survive in a ruthless city in which they can trust nobody — least of all each other. Current PC players can transfer both GTAV Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters and progression with a one-time migration from the legacy version of GTAV to GTAV Enhanced.
- Stunning Visuals - Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes including ray tracing features such as ambient occlusion and global illumination, ray traced shadows and reflections, support for AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS, and more.*
- Faster Loading - Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before by using SSD and DirectStorage on supported devices.
- Immersive Controls - Feel new levels of responsiveness with dynamic resistance via the Adaptive Triggers on the DualSense wireless controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and much more.*
- Confirm edition support. Check the mod page for Legacy or Enhanced compatibility and note every required dependency. Do not copy a Legacy archive into an Enhanced installation, or vice versa, unless the author explicitly supports it.
- Back up the installation. Copy the game directory or the original files you will touch to a location outside the game folder. Include the launcher configuration information you will need to return to a clean setup.
- Install OpenIV for archive work. OpenIV is used to inspect and edit GTA V archives. In its ASI Manager, install ASI Loader and OpenIV.ASI as described by the current tool instructions. If the manager offers a component you do not need, leave it out.
- Create the
modsfolder. In OpenIV, create amodsdirectory in the GTA V installation and copyupdate.rpfinto it, following the guide’s path and prompts. Work on the copy undermods, not the original archive. - Add archive-based mods to the copy. Preserve the directory structure expected by the mod. If a package tells you to replace files inside
update.rpfor another archive, make that change only in the matching archive undermods. Keep the downloaded package and a written list of changed files so removal is straightforward. - Install script support only when required. For a script mod that requires ScriptHookV, place the files specified by the current ScriptHookV instructions beside
GTA5.exe. Install only the components the chosen mod requires; a script that does not need ScriptHookV should not receive it merely because it is available. - Add one mod at a time. Start with the dependency or loader, test Story Mode, then add the next mod. This identifies the offending package if the game stops loading and avoids trying to diagnose several changes at once.
- Test Story Mode before any online attempt. Launch Story Mode and verify that the menu, a saved game, and the mod’s advertised feature work. Exit completely before changing the BattlEye or launcher setting.
Know which files belong in which layer
| Layer | Typical purpose | Safe handling |
|---|---|---|
| Original game files | Rockstar’s clean installation used for official services | Do not overwrite them; preserve a backup. |
mods archive copies |
Replacements for archives such as update.rpf used by Story Mode |
Edit or remove the copies here. Removing the changed files from mods is the community guide’s undo method. |
Loader files beside GTA5.exe |
Components such as ASI Loader, OpenIV.ASI, or ScriptHookV required by particular mods | Track every added file and remove or restore it before an online session. |
| Mod package | Downloaded scripts, archives, readmes, and dependencies | Keep the original package outside the game folder for reinstallation or verification. |
Not every mod uses every layer. The installation readme is authoritative for that mod’s file list; copying an entire package into the game directory can install unsupported files and make recovery harder.
Use a deliberate Story Mode/Online switching routine
Think of the two modes as two configurations, not two menu choices. Record the state before each launch.
| Item | Modded Story Mode | Official GTA Online |
|---|---|---|
| Game files | Archive copies and required script files may be present. | Original, unmodified files only. |
| BattlEye | May be disabled through the applicable launcher setting if the platform permits it. | Enabled. |
| Launcher | Use the platform’s Story Mode option and the mod’s documented launch requirements. | Use the normal Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Launcher configuration. |
| Network destination | Story Mode only. | Official GTA Online servers. |
Starting a modded Story Mode session
- Close GTA V and the launcher.
- Confirm that the modded files are present only in the intended installation or modded copy.
- Use the platform’s documented BattlEye setting to disable BattlEye for Story Mode if required. The exact control varies by launcher.
- Start the game and choose Story Mode. Do not select an Online option while BattlEye is disabled.
- When finished, exit the game fully rather than leaving the launcher in a suspended state.
Returning to official GTA Online
- Remove the archive and script changes, or switch to the separate clean installation you prepared.
- Restore any original files that were changed outside
mods. Do not leave loader files besideGTA5.exeunless they are part of the clean setup. - Restore BattlEye to its normal enabled configuration.
- Start through the regular Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Launcher path, without mod-specific launch arguments.
- Verify that Story Mode loads normally and that no mod loader or script reports an active injection before selecting GTA Online.
If you cannot confidently describe the current files as unmodified, do not connect to official Online. Restore from the clean backup or use the platform’s file-repair process, then repeat the verification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

GTA Online will not connect
This is expected when BattlEye is disabled. Rockstar says official GTA Online requires BattlEye, so re-enable it and launch through the relevant platform configuration. Its troubleshooting page recommends checking launch arguments and using the appropriate Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Launcher route.

A mod stops loading after BattlEye is enabled
That is an indication that you are using an online configuration with files intended for Story Mode. Do not try to bypass BattlEye or force the script into Online. Close the game, restore the clean files, and use the mod only in the Story Mode configuration.
A blocked-file message mentions bcrypt.dll
Rockstar’s support article, “BattlEye blocking bcrypt.dll when launching Grand Theft Auto V,” last updated October 15, 2024, says to ensure GTA V is unmodified and warns that a modded bcrypt.dll can be flagged. Its explicit instruction is: “Do not delete the bcrypt.dll file. It is essential for Windows to function properly.”
Do not remove or replace that Windows file as a troubleshooting shortcut. Instead, undo the mod installation, restore the clean game files, remove unauthorized copies from the game directory, and then retry the normal BattlEye launch. If the error remains, follow Rockstar’s current troubleshooting steps rather than downloading a replacement DLL from an unrelated site.

- Remove the most recently installed mod and test again.
- Check that every archive and script matches Legacy or Enhanced.
- Confirm that the loader version is the one required by the mod and that its files are in the location specified by the readme.
- Restore the backup if the game still fails, then add dependencies one at a time.
- Do not verify or repair files while you still need to preserve an experimental installation unless you have a separate copy; repair tools can overwrite changed files.
Edition-specific decisions: Legacy versus Enhanced
There is no universal compatibility list that makes a mod safe to copy between editions. Evaluate each package against the edition, file type, required loader versions, and removal method.
Best Value
| Decision question | Legacy installation | Enhanced installation |
|---|---|---|
| Does the mod explicitly name this edition? | Use only when the author states Legacy support. | Use only when the author states Enhanced support. |
| Are the installation folders interchangeable? | No assumption is safe; the community guide says the editions have separate folders. | |
| Will an archive replacement transfer directly? | Not necessarily. Match the archive path and edition-specific instructions. | |
| Can the same script loader be assumed? | No. Check the mod and loader documentation for the installed edition. | |
Remove, update, or abandon a mod safely
Removing an archive mod
Close the game, remove the changed copy from the corresponding location under mods, and launch Story Mode to confirm that the game falls back to the original archive. If you edited an original archive by mistake, restore that archive from your backup instead of trying to reconstruct it manually.
Removing a script mod
Use the package’s readme to identify its script and any supporting files. Remove only those files, retain shared dependencies that other installed mods still need, and test after each removal. Keep a file list because similarly named scripts can have different purposes.
Updating a loader or game edition
Back up first, read the new version’s compatibility notes, and treat the update as a fresh test. A game update can invalidate a script or archive even when the mod itself has not changed. If the updated combination fails, restore the last known-good backup rather than adding more loaders.
Common mistakes that put Online at risk
- Installing into the original archives: this destroys the clean baseline and makes it easy to forget what must be restored.
- Assuming “Story Mode” in the menu is an isolation mechanism: modified files can remain installed when the launcher later offers Online.
- Leaving BattlEye disabled and trying Online: official servers require BattlEye, and disabling it is not permission to use mods online.
- Copying a mod across editions: Legacy and Enhanced are separate targets.
- Installing every dependency “just in case”: unnecessary loaders increase conflicts and complicate removal.
- Deleting
bcrypt.dll: Rockstar explicitly says it is essential to Windows. - Using downloaded DLLs from random sources: they can be malicious or incompatible and are not a substitute for restoring the game.
- Testing several new mods at once: you lose the ability to identify which change caused a crash or blocked launch.
A practical pre-Online checklist
- All archive changes are removed from the modded copy or you have switched to a known-clean installation.
- Original game files have been restored where anything was changed outside
mods. - Loader and script files beside
GTA5.exeare absent from the clean setup unless they belong there. - Every installed file matches the correct Legacy or Enhanced edition.
- BattlEye is enabled.
- No mod-specific launch arguments remain active.
- You are launching through the normal Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Launcher configuration.
- You have not deleted or replaced Windows files such as
bcrypt.dll.
If any item is uncertain, stop and restore the backup before opening GTA Online. This procedure does not guarantee an account outcome, but it follows Rockstar’s stated online boundary and keeps the modded components confined to Story Mode.
