The simplest supported installation path for most people is GrapheneOS’s official WebUSB installer. Confirm that your exact Pixel can be bootloader-unlocked, back up everything, prepare an updated computer and a reliable USB data cable, enable OEM unlocking in stock Android, then use the installer to unlock, flash, and relock the phone. The unlock, operating-system flash, and relock each erase user data, so treat the backup as mandatory.
Use the live GrapheneOS WebUSB installation guide on the day you install. Its supported Pixel, operating-system, browser, and model-specific requirements can change.
What you need before installing
GrapheneOS installation replaces the phone’s operating system and changes its bootloader state. A small compatibility mistake can leave you unable to proceed, while an unplanned wipe can permanently remove photos, messages, authenticator data, and files. Complete these checks before connecting the phone.

Carrier variants deserve special attention. A carrier’s configuration can disable bootloader unlocking even when the same retail model is supported. GrapheneOS advises avoiding carrier variants to reduce this risk. Check that your particular handset exposes an OEM-unlocking option in stock Android before you commit to the installation.
Do this check using the exact handset in your possession, including its carrier and regional variant. A model name printed on a retail listing is not enough if the seller supplied a carrier-customized device. If OEM unlocking cannot be enabled, stop there rather than downloading images or attempting unofficial bypasses.
Meet the computer requirements
The current WebUSB guide lists at least 2 GB of free computer memory and 32 GB of free storage. Keep the computer’s operating system and browser updated, and check the guide’s live supported-version list immediately before starting. Install from a bare-metal operating system rather than a virtual machine: USB passthrough in virtual machines can be unreliable during bootloader operations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesClose software that may suspend the computer, claim USB devices, or aggressively manage removable hardware. Keep the computer connected to reliable power, and prevent sleep until the installer reports that every stage is complete. These precautions reduce interruptions without changing any of the official flashing steps.
Prepare a suitable cable and port
Use a standards-compliant, data-capable USB-C cable. The high-quality USB-C cable supplied with the Pixel is the preferred starting point. If the computer has only USB-A ports, use a high-quality USB-C-to-USB-A data cable. A charging-only lead cannot transfer the bootloader data needed by the installer.
Connect the phone directly to a computer port. Avoid USB hubs, docks, and questionable adapters. The official guide identifies faulty cables and hubs as common causes of connection and flashing failures. There is no required cable brand or model; reliability and data capability matter more than appearance or marketing claims.
Back up before touching the bootloader
Copy photos, videos, documents, messages, app exports, password-manager data, two-factor-authentication recovery codes, and any other information you cannot recreate. Confirm that the backup opens on another device or computer. Cloud synchronization is not automatically a complete backup: check app-specific data and locally stored files separately.

Keep recovery codes somewhere independent of the Pixel. A backup that merely appears in a file list is not enough; open representative photos, documents, and exports so you know the copy is usable.

Three operations in this process erase user data:
- Unlocking the bootloader wipes the existing installation.
- Flashing the GrapheneOS factory images replaces the operating system and wipes data.
- Locking the bootloader again wipes data a second time after flashing.
Plan to restore your backup only after the final lock and first boot. Anything copied to the phone between the first wipe and the relock can be lost again.
Choose the installation method
GrapheneOS documents two supported routes. The WebUSB method is the practical choice for most readers because the browser performs the device communication and flashing sequence. The command-line method gives experienced users more manual control but requires additional tools and verification work. Use one method from start to finish rather than combining partial steps from unrelated guides.
| Route | Best for | What it requires | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official WebUSB installer | Most installations | A supported browser with WebUSB, a compatible computer, and direct USB connection | Lower setup burden; the browser guides the unlock, download, flash, and lock sequence |
| Official command line | Technically experienced users | Current fastboot tooling, OpenSSH setup, factory-image signature verification, and comfort with terminal instructions | More control, but more opportunities for a tooling or command mistake |
The project recommends following its own official installation instructions and warns that third-party tutorials can be outdated or inaccurate. If you choose command line, use the current CLI guide linked from that page for every command and verification step. Do not substitute a factory image from a different Pixel generation, and do not skip signature checks simply because a download completed successfully.

Step 1: Enable OEM unlocking in stock Android
Leave the Pixel running its original Android installation while you change this setting.
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone (or About tablet on a Pixel Tablet).
- Scroll to Build number and tap it repeatedly until Android confirms that Developer options are enabled.
- Return to Settings and open System > Developer options.
- Turn on OEM unlocking and approve the warning.
Some variants need an internet connection at this point so stock Android can check the carrier-lock status. If the switch is unavailable or disabled, do not continue by forcing another method; first resolve the device’s unlockability with the current official guidance. An enabled switch is a prerequisite, not a sign that any Pixel image can be flashed safely.
Pixel 6a historical exception
GrapheneOS documents a specific Pixel 6a issue: the factory stock operating-system version did not allow OEM unlocking. The documented fix was to update over the air to the June 2022 release or a later version, then perform a factory reset so the setting becomes available. This is a model-specific exception, not a general instruction for every Pixel. Check the live guide for any newer caveats before applying it.
Step 2: Enter Fastboot Mode and connect directly
- Power the Pixel off or restart it.
- Hold Volume Down while it starts until Fastboot Mode appears.
- Leave the phone paused on that screen.
- Connect it directly to the computer with the prepared data cable.
On a Pixel Tablet, disconnect the tablet from its stand before proceeding. The browser may not see the phone if the operating system lacks the appropriate USB permissions. Linux users may need udev rules for non-root USB access; follow the distribution-specific package and permission instructions in the official guide rather than running the browser as root by default.
If the phone boots into Android instead, power it down and repeat the Volume Down procedure. Do not start flashing while the device is merely at the normal lock screen. The installer needs the bootloader interface, and keeping the phone on that screen makes it clear which state is being operated on.

Linux-specific connection issue
If Linux reports that the device is in use, the official troubleshooting instructions note that the fwupd service may be claiming the USB interface. Temporarily stop it only as described by GrapheneOS, complete the installation, and restore normal service afterward. Avoid broad, permanent permission changes when the documented udev rule or temporary service stop addresses the problem.
Step 3: Use the WebUSB installer
Open the official WebUSB installer in a supported, up-to-date browser. The labels and supported browser versions are maintained on that page, so use what it shows rather than an old screenshot. When the browser asks to select a USB device, choose the Pixel that is visibly in Fastboot Mode.
Unlock the bootloader
- Choose the connected Pixel in the installer’s device selector.
- Select the control to unlock the bootloader.
- Read the warning on the phone’s screen and confirm with the hardware keys.
The confirmation starts the first data wipe. If the installer cannot detect the device, stop and fix the cable, port, browser permission, driver, or Linux udev issue before retrying. Repeatedly changing commands or images will not solve a missing USB connection.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Download and flash the factory images
- Return to the installer after the phone reboots or remains in its bootloader flow.
- Allow it to download the factory images and required firmware for the selected Pixel.
- Start the flash operation and leave the cable connected.
- Wait for the installer to report completion; do not close the browser, suspend the computer, or disconnect the phone during the process.
The initial flash replaces the existing operating system and erases data. Download time depends on the connection and image size; the important signal is the installer’s completion status, not a particular elapsed time. If a progress display pauses, give the installer time and consult its current troubleshooting instructions before interrupting it.
Step 4: Relock the bootloader
Do not treat an unlocked bootloader as the finished installation. Return to the bootloader interface if necessary and use the installer’s lock bootloader control. Confirm the lock on the Pixel with the hardware keys, then wait for the operation to finish.
Relocking erases user data again. It is also the security-critical step: as the GrapheneOS documentation states, “Locking the bootloader is important as it enables full verified boot.” A locked bootloader prevents unauthorized flashing or modification of protected operating-system partitions and allows the device to verify what it boots.
Because relocking wipes the phone, do not spend time installing apps or copying files between flashing and locking. If you must repeat the process after a failure, assume that any data on the device is disposable and rely on the backup kept elsewhere.
Step 5: Complete first boot and verify the result
- Let the Pixel boot into GrapheneOS.
- Complete the initial setup screens.
- Unless you have a specific future development need, turn off OEM unlocking during the final setup process.
- Restore your personal data from the backup you made before installation.
Do not restore data until the bootloader is locked and the phone has completed its first normal boot. A restore performed earlier can be lost by the relock wipe. Treat the first successful boot as a checkpoint: confirm the model, basic connectivity, and setup screens before adding a large set of applications.

Check verified-boot information
Supported Pixel generations expose verified-boot information. On newer generations that display the complete verified-boot key hash, compare the value shown by the device with the official value for that model in GrapheneOS documentation. Older generations may show only a shortened identifier, so the available comparison is less complete.
For an additional hardware-backed check, GrapheneOS documents Auditor, which uses a second Android device to verify the installed system and device state. Auditor complements, rather than replaces, the protection provided by a locked bootloader. Follow the current official instructions for pairing and interpreting its result. Keep the second device available during verification; it is part of this optional workflow.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The browser does not list the Pixel | Bad cable, hub, unsupported browser, missing Linux udev permission, or the phone is not in Fastboot Mode | Return to Fastboot Mode, connect directly to the computer, try the supplied or another known-good data cable, update the browser, and apply the official Linux USB-permission instructions. |
| OEM unlocking is missing or disabled | Carrier restriction, no internet check, an unsupported variant, or the documented Pixel 6a stock-version issue | Verify the exact model and carrier status. Give stock Android internet access, apply the Pixel 6a update-and-reset procedure if it is that model, and consult the live guide before proceeding. |
| Linux says the device is in use | A system service such as fwupd has claimed the USB interface | Use the official troubleshooting procedure to stop the conflicting service temporarily, then reconnect in Fastboot Mode. |
| The flash stops or fails partway through | Interrupted USB connection, unstable hub or adapter, computer sleep, or an unsupported environment | Do not improvise with random images. Keep the phone connected, restart the official sequence from the documented recovery point, use a direct port and reliable cable, and avoid virtual machines. |
| The phone boots but is not fully protected | The bootloader was left unlocked | Return to the official install flow and lock the bootloader, accepting the required wipe, before using the phone for normal work. |
| The phone repeatedly returns to Fastboot | The installation has not completed, or the bootloader state is waiting for the next documented step | Read the installer’s status and the on-device text, then continue only with the matching official step. Do not select unrelated bootloader options or flash a different image. |
If an error does not match these cases, record the exact on-screen message, Pixel model, computer operating system, browser version, and stage at which it occurred. Then use the live GrapheneOS installation and troubleshooting documentation; do not substitute commands from a different Pixel generation or an old tutorial.
Security decisions after installation
Why the locked state matters
GrapheneOS’s verified-boot model relies on the bootloader being locked. Unlocking is necessary to replace the factory software, but leaving it unlocked removes the protection that detects unauthorized changes to system partitions. Relocking restores the intended verified-boot trust chain.
When to leave OEM unlocking off
For an ordinary daily-use phone, leave OEM unlocking disabled after setup. Re-enabling it later is a deliberate maintenance choice for someone who expects to flash another operating system or perform development work; it should not be enabled merely because the option exists.
Keep verification separate from app setup
Complete bootloader verification and any Auditor check before installing a large collection of apps. This makes it easier to distinguish a device-state problem from an application or account-setup problem and gives you a clear baseline for future checks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will installing GrapheneOS erase my data?
Yes. Bootloader unlocking wipes the existing phone, flashing replaces the operating system and wipes data, and relocking wipes data again. Make and test a backup before starting, then restore it only after the final lock and first successful boot.
Can I install GrapheneOS on any Pixel?
No. Support is model-specific and can change. Check the current GrapheneOS supported-device information and WebUSB guide for the exact Pixel. Carrier variants should generally be avoided because their configuration may disable bootloader unlocking.
What if OEM unlocking is greyed out?
Give stock Android internet access so it can check carrier-lock status, and verify that the handset is an unlockable variant. Pixel 6a units on the factory stock release had a documented exception: update to the June 2022 release or later over the air, then factory-reset as directed by the current guide.
Do I need a special USB cable?
No brand is required, but the cable must be standards-compliant and support data. The supplied Pixel USB-C cable is a good choice. Use a quality USB-C-to-USB-A data cable only when the computer lacks USB-C, connect directly, and avoid hubs.
Can I use a virtual machine?
The WebUSB guide recommends a bare-metal operating system because USB passthrough in virtual machines can be unreliable during bootloader operations. Use a directly connected, updated computer whenever possible.
Why does Linux say the device is in use?
A service such as fwupd may have claimed the USB interface. Follow GrapheneOS’s documented Linux troubleshooting procedure to stop the conflicting service temporarily, then reconnect in Fastboot Mode and restore normal service afterward.
Is relocking the bootloader optional?
No for a normal secure installation. Relocking wipes data again, but it enables full verified boot and helps prevent unauthorized flashing or modification of protected operating-system partitions.
Should I use WebUSB or the command-line method?
WebUSB is the recommended practical route for most people. Command line is for experienced users who can set up current fastboot and OpenSSH tools and verify factory-image signatures. Follow one official method from start to finish.
How can I verify the installed system?
After the bootloader is locked, newer supported Pixel generations can show a complete verified-boot key hash that you can compare with the official value for the model. Older devices may show only a shortened identifier. GrapheneOS Auditor can provide an additional hardware-backed check using a second Android device.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Check the exact Pixel and carrier variant, back up before any bootloader action, use a current computer and dependable direct USB connection, follow the official WebUSB sequence, and relock the bootloader before restoring data or using the phone normally.
