To install Exile, you need more than a mission file: deploy the Arma 3 dedicated server, the client-side @Exile mod, the server-side @ExileServer package, a MariaDB/MySQL database loaded with exile.sql, a matching extDB3 extension, and an Exile mission PBO. Start the server with both mod parameters, point its template at the same mission PBO, then use the RPT and extDB logs to verify the first boot before troubleshooting player connections.
What an Exile installation contains
Exile is a two-sided deployment. Players load the @Exile client mod, while the dedicated server loads that mod and also loads @ExileServer through -servermod. The server package contains the server-side scripts, configuration examples and database-extension files; it is not a replacement for the client mod.

- A MariaDB or MySQL service and an Exile database.
- The supplied
exile.sqlschema imported before the first launch. - An Exile mission PBO in

Skipping any one of these can produce a server that starts but cannot create a session, cannot load a mission, or appears to run without saving player data.

Choose where to run the server
Self-hosted Windows
Windows is usually administered with a batch file, a local MariaDB/MySQL service and a BattlEye directory. You control every file, extension and restart script, but you are responsible for firewall rules, database backups, updates and recovery.
Self-hosted Linux
Linux uses SteamCMD and the ./arma3server executable. Logs are commonly redirected to files, and a service manager or shell script is used for restarts. Confirm that the executable, extDB3 library and all configuration files use the same architecture.

A managed Arma 3 panel can automate Steam Workshop downloads, database creation, formatting and start/stop operations. Before choosing one, confirm that it permits a custom Exile mission PBO, exposes the database connection settings, supports the required extDB3 architecture and allows backups. The cited deployment material does not establish a universal CPU, RAM, player-count or monthly-price requirement, so those figures must come from the particular host and your intended workload.
Install or update the Arma 3 dedicated server
Use SteamCMD to install the dedicated-server application. The app ID is 233780. Installing into a dedicated directory keeps the server files separate from a desktop Arma 3 installation.
Windows
- Download and extract SteamCMD.
- Open a command prompt in the SteamCMD directory.
- Run the following, replacing the destination with your server directory:
steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir C:arma3server +app_update 233780 validate +quitRun the same command when updating. The validate pass checks the downloaded files; it does not install Exile or create the database.
Linux
- Install the distribution packages required by SteamCMD and the Arma 3 server.
- Create a service account and a directory such as
/opt/arma3server. - Run SteamCMD with the Linux path:
steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir /opt/arma3server +app_update 233780 validate +quitAfter installation, identify the executable supplied by the current server build. Some installations expose arma3server; others include a 64-bit executable such as arma3server_x64. Use the file that actually exists and keep its architecture in mind when installing extensions.

Obtain the Exile files
Download the client mod
The Exile development documentation identifies Steam Workshop item 1487484880 for @Exile. Downloading that Workshop item requires a real Steam account that owns Arma 3. A server administrator can download the files with that account and copy the resulting @Exile directory into the dedicated-server folder, or use the equivalent Workshop workflow provided by a managed panel.
Clients must enable the same @Exile mod. Keep the server and clients on the same Exile release; a version mismatch can prevent a join even when the database is healthy.
Install the server package
Obtain the release’s @ExileServer package and place it beside the Arma executable, not inside mpmissions. Do not put the server package in a client’s mod list. The server loads it with -servermod=@ExileServer.
Check the resulting layout
A useful starting layout looks like this (the exact contents vary by release):

profiles/The extDB3 configuration may be in @ExileServer/extdb3 or in a path named by the package. Use the location shipped with your release rather than creating a second copy.
Create the database and import the schema
Start MariaDB or MySQL before the first Exile launch. Create an empty database and a dedicated account instead of using the root account for the game server. For a local MariaDB installation, an administrator can use SQL similar to:

CREATE DATABASE exile;
CREATE USER 'exile'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'replace-with-a-long-password';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON exile.* TO 'exile'@'localhost';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;If the database is on another machine, create the account for the server’s source address and restrict the grant to that address where practical. Confirm the database host, port and credentials from the server machine before moving on.
Import exile.sql
Import the schema supplied with the Exile release before launching the mission. From a machine with the MySQL client installed, the pattern is:

In a graphical database tool, select the exile database and execute the complete file. Some Exile packages or add-ons include additional migration SQL; apply those migrations after the base schema, in the order documented by that package.
Verify that tables were created and that the account can insert and update rows. An empty database is not an acceptable substitute for importing the schema: the server may start while persistence queries fail.
Configure extDB3
Open the extdb-conf.ini or extdb3-conf.ini shipped with your Exile server package. File naming and directory placement differ between releases, so edit the copy referenced by that package. Set the database section’s host or IP address, port, database name, username and password. A local database normally uses 127.0.0.1 and port 3306; use the actual port if your service was changed.
Keep the existing key names and section names. Some builds call the address field IP, while others describe it as a host; do not add a second section with guessed names. Save the file in the encoding expected by the package and ensure the password contains no accidental trailing spaces.

Match the extension architecture
The Arma executable and the database extension must be compatible. A 64-bit server paired only with 32-bit extDB2 binaries can fail to load the extension and continue without a working database. Use a compatible 64-bit extDB3 build with a 64-bit server, or deliberately run a matching 32-bit stack when your release requires it. Do not assume that a library copied from an older Exile package is compatible with the current executable.
On first launch, an architecture problem normally appears in the RPT or extDB log as an extension-load failure, rather than as a normal SQL authentication error. Fix the binary mismatch before changing passwords or firewall rules.
Install the mission PBO and align the template
Copy the Exile mission PBO for the chosen map into mpmissions. For example, an Altis installation may contain Exile.Altis.pbo. The name before .pbo is significant.

Open the server configuration used by the launch command, commonly @ExileServer/config.cfg, and set its mission or template value to the exact PBO name without the extension, for example:
template = Exile.Altis;Case, punctuation and map name must agree. A PBO named Exile.Tanoa.pbo will not satisfy a template set to Exile.Altis. If the mission is absent or the names differ, the process can remain running while no playable mission is created.
Start the server with the required parameters
The Exile README’s representative command includes the client mod, server mod, configuration files, profiles, BattlEye path, port, an empty world and automatic initialization. Adapt the executable and path separators to your operating system:

Windows batch example

Keep the configuration paths pointed at the files you edited. The -mod=@Exile parameter makes the Exile client content available to the server; -servermod=@ExileServer loads server-only content without asking players to install it.
Create the profiles and BattlEye directories if the package did not create them. Open the selected UDP port in the host firewall and any upstream router only after the local first boot is clean. Port forwarding cannot repair a missing mission, a failed extension or invalid SQL credentials.
Validate the first boot before inviting players
- Start the server from the directory containing
@Exile,@ExileServerandmpmissions. - Wait for initialization to finish instead of immediately restarting after the first warning.
- Read the server RPT file in the active profiles directory.
- Read the extDB log in the extension’s log directory.
- Confirm that the selected mission PBO was found and that no extension-load or SQL authentication errors remain.
- Connect locally or from a test client with the matching
@Exileversion before publishing the address.
These logs distinguish a game-server problem from a network problem. A clean mission load with successful database queries is the point at which firewall and port-forwarding tests become meaningful.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes

Operate the server after installation
Back up the right data
Back up the Exile database regularly, especially before applying an add-on migration or updating the server package. Also preserve @ExileServer, config.cfg, basic.cfg, the extDB configuration, BattlEye settings, mission PBOs and your launch script. A file backup without the database does not preserve player progress.
Update in a controlled order
- Stop the server cleanly and take a database backup.
- Record the current Arma, Exile and extDB3 versions.
- Update the Arma dedicated-server files with SteamCMD.
- Update
@Exileand@ExileServerfrom a compatible release. - Apply only the migrations supplied for that release.
- Recheck extDB architecture and configuration paths.
- Start privately and inspect the RPT and extDB logs before reopening the server.
Keep configuration secrets private
Restrict permissions on extdb-conf.ini and any launch script containing a database password. Do not paste those files into public support posts. Give the game account only the permissions it needs for the Exile database rather than using a global administrator account.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
The installation requirements do not change: both approaches still need the client and server mod split, a SQL schema, compatible extDB3 binaries, a mission PBO and a correct launch configuration. The operational trade-off is who maintains those pieces.
