Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click Docker, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
Docker Compose V2 is installed on Linux as the Docker CLI plugin named docker-compose-plugin. After Docker Engine and the Docker CLI are installed, the command you use is docker compose—with a space—not the older docker-compose executable. For most VPSs, install the plugin from Docker’s repository together with the Engine packages so security and feature updates arrive through the normal package manager.
This guide covers Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, verification, non-root access, manual installation when repositories are unavailable, and the fixes for the two errors VPS administrators encounter most often: a missing Compose command and permission denied on Docker’s socket.

What Docker Compose V2 is and what it requires
Compose lets you describe a multi-container application in a YAML file and operate that application as a unit. A Compose project can define services, networks, volumes, environment variables, health checks, and startup dependencies. Compose V2 is the current Go-based implementation integrated into the Docker command-line interface. Linux exposes it through the docker compose subcommand.
V2 is not a separate daemon. The Docker daemon still creates and runs containers; the Compose plugin reads your Compose file and sends requests through the Docker CLI. Consequently, installing only a Compose binary is not enough for normal operation.

Prerequisites
- A supported Linux distribution and release. Docker publishes separate procedures for Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, CentOS, RHEL, Raspberry Pi OS, and other systems; supported architectures differ by distribution.
- Root or
sudoaccess to install packages, configure repositories, and manage the Docker service. - Docker Engine, the Docker CLI, and the container runtime. The recommended package installation also includes Buildx, which is used by modern image-building workflows.
- A VPS architecture compatible with the repository packages you select. Check it before adding a repository or downloading a manual binary.
Compose does not replace Docker Engine. If the daemon is stopped, a correctly installed plugin will still fail when it tries to create or start containers.
Identify your VPS before changing packages
Do not copy an Ubuntu repository block onto Debian, or a Debian suite name onto Ubuntu. First identify the operating system, release, and CPU architecture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorscat /etc/os-release
dpkg --print-architecture
/etc/os-release shows the distribution and release identifiers used by package instructions. On Debian- or Ubuntu-family systems, dpkg --print-architecture prints the architecture understood by APT, such as amd64 or arm64. Fedora uses RPM architecture naming and should be handled with its DNF procedure instead.
Take a snapshot or confirm that your VPS provider has a recovery console before replacing container packages. A repository change normally leaves existing images and volumes in place, but removing conflicting packages or changing the daemon is still a privileged system operation.
Remove packages that can conflict with Docker’s packages
On Ubuntu and Debian, older distribution packages can provide commands or libraries with names that overlap Docker’s official packages. Docker lists these possible conflicts:
docker.iodocker-composedocker-compose-v2docker-docdocker-buildxpodman-dockercontainerdrunc
Check what is installed before removing anything:
dpkg -l | grep -E 'docker|containerd|runc|podman'
If a listed package is present and you are moving to Docker’s package set, remove only the packages that actually conflict on your machine. Package removal generally does not delete images, containers, volumes, or networks stored under Docker’s data directory, but read the APT transaction summary and preserve backups before accepting it. Do not remove a package that belongs to another container runtime you still need.
Install Docker Compose V2 on Ubuntu or Debian
Repository installation is the normal choice for a maintained VPS. It registers Docker’s signing key and package source, installs the Engine and CLI together with the Compose plugin, and lets APT receive later updates. Docker’s Ubuntu and Debian procedures are similar but use different distribution suite values, so use the exact repository block for your operating system and release from Docker’s official installation documentation.

1. Configure the official Docker repository
Follow the current Docker instructions for your identified distribution to install the prerequisite APT tools, add Docker’s key, and create the repository entry. The suite variable is not interchangeable: Ubuntu and Debian releases have different names and repository paths. After creating the entry, refresh package metadata:
sudo apt update
If APT reports a signature, suite, or architecture error, stop here. Recheck /etc/os-release, the repository suite, the key file permissions, and whether Docker publishes packages for your architecture and release. Do not bypass signature verification to force an install.
2. Install Engine, CLI, runtime, Buildx, and Compose
Install the complete package set documented for both Ubuntu and Debian:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
sudo apt install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin
The package names have distinct roles. docker-ce supplies the daemon, docker-ce-cli supplies the command-line client, containerd.io supplies the container runtime, docker-buildx-plugin supplies the modern builder, and docker-compose-plugin adds the docker compose subcommand.
APT may propose removing a conflicting package or changing dependencies. Review the proposed transaction. If it would remove a service you still rely on, cancel and resolve that conflict instead of accepting blindly.
3. Check and start the Docker service
Inspect the daemon after installation:
sudo systemctl status docker
If the status is inactive, start it:
sudo systemctl start docker
Use systemctl start only when the status shows that the service is not running. If it fails to start, keep the terminal output and inspect the service journal before testing Compose files. A daemon failure is separate from a missing Compose plugin.
4. Verify Engine and Compose independently
Run Docker’s installation test and then query the plugin:

sudo docker run hello-world
docker compose version
The first command downloads and runs Docker’s small verification image, proving that the CLI can reach the daemon and create a container. The second proves that the CLI can discover the Compose plugin. Both checks matter: a successful hello-world run does not prove that Compose is installed, and a reported Compose version does not prove that the daemon is healthy.
Install Docker Compose V2 on Fedora
Fedora uses DNF rather than APT. Configure Docker’s Fedora repository using the current official Fedora procedure, then install the equivalent package set:
sudo dnf install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin
DNF may ask you to accept a repository key and transaction. Confirm that the repository and architecture match the Fedora release running on the VPS. As with Ubuntu and Debian, resolve conflicts rather than mixing unrelated Docker, Podman-compatibility, or distribution container packages without a plan.
Fedora’s documented startup command both enables Docker at boot and starts it immediately:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →sudo systemctl enable --now docker
Verify the daemon and Compose plugin:
sudo systemctl status docker
sudo docker run hello-world
docker compose version
If your Fedora derivative is not explicitly listed in Docker’s procedure, check whether its repositories are compatible before substituting a release name. A derivative may require a different repository configuration even when its package manager is DNF.
Use the Compose command correctly
Compose V2 is invoked with a space:
docker compose up -d
docker compose ps
docker compose logs -f
docker compose down
Run these commands from the directory containing your Compose file, normally compose.yaml, compose.yml, or a file passed with -f. For example:
docker compose -f /srv/myapp/compose.yaml up -d
The hyphenated docker-compose command belongs to the older standalone implementation. Some systems retain it for compatibility, but installing or invoking it does not confirm that V2 is available. For new deployments, use the space-separated command and verify it explicitly with docker compose version.

Allow a trusted administrator to run Docker without sudo
By default, Docker’s daemon listens on a Unix socket owned by root. That is why the documented verification uses sudo docker run hello-world. The socket is not a normal TCP service, and access to it is effectively administrative access to the host.
Option 1: keep using sudo
This is the simplest and most explicit approach:
sudo docker compose up -d
Use the same privilege consistently for a project. Mixing root-owned and user-owned configuration files can create confusing permissions, especially when bind mounts write files into your application directory.
Option 2: add a trusted user to the docker group
Docker documents an optional post-installation procedure that creates or uses the docker group, adds your user, and refreshes the login session. The usual sequence is:
sudo groupadd docker
sudo usermod -aG docker $USER
Log out and back in, or start a new session, so the supplementary group is applied. Confirm membership with:
id -nG
Then test without sudo:
docker run hello-world
docker compose version
Membership in the Docker group grants broad control over the daemon. Limit it to trusted administrators; it should not be treated as a low-privilege application role. If you do not need passwordless Docker access, continue using sudo instead.
Manual Compose plugin installation when a repository is unavailable
Docker also documents installing the Compose plugin binary directly into the Docker CLI plugin directory. Use this only when repository installation is unavailable or unsuitable for your operating environment. Repository packages integrate with normal security updates; a manually downloaded binary creates an update responsibility for you.
Plan the manual install
- Select a specific Compose release from Docker’s official release instructions rather than guessing a version.
- Confirm that the release supports the VPS architecture.
- Use the CLI plugin directory appropriate to the user or system-wide installation. A system-wide plugin is commonly placed under Docker’s CLI plugins path; follow the current Docker instructions for the exact directory.
- Download the binary over a trusted connection, install it with executable permissions, and record the selected release for future maintenance.
The final validation is the same:
docker compose version
A manual plugin does not install Docker Engine, containerd, or the Docker CLI. Those prerequisites must already be present and working. If the command is found but container operations fail, test the daemon separately with systemctl status docker and docker run hello-world.

Repository package or manual binary?
| Consideration | Repository installation | Manual plugin installation |
|---|---|---|
| Maintenance and updates | Compose updates arrive through the distribution package workflow alongside Docker packages. | You must monitor releases, replace the binary, and preserve the intended version yourself. |
| Version reproducibility | Repository state determines the available package version; pin packages only when your change-control process requires it. | A selected release can be held at a known version, provided you document the architecture and upgrade plan. |
| Architecture compatibility | APT or DNF resolves packages published for the configured architecture. | You must choose the correct binary and plugin path manually. |
| Operational effort | More initial repository configuration, then routine package maintenance. | Faster in a constrained environment, but every future update is a manual task. |
| Rollback | Depends on package versions retained by the repository and your package-management policy. | Replacing the plugin with a previously retained binary is straightforward, but you must keep that binary and its provenance. |
For an ordinary internet-connected VPS, repository installation is the safer operational default. Manual installation is a fallback for systems where the repository cannot be used or where a controlled, pinned plugin binary is an explicit requirement.

Troubleshoot installation and first-run failures
docker compose: command not found
- Confirm that the plugin package is installed. On APT systems, run
dpkg -l docker-compose-plugin; on DNF systems, query the installed package with DNF. - Check that you are invoking the Docker CLI you intended:
command -v docker. - Ensure the Compose plugin was installed in the CLI plugin directory expected by that CLI. A manually downloaded binary in a different user’s directory will not be visible to every account.
- Run
docker compose versionagain. Do not substitutedocker-composeas proof of a V2 installation.
If the package is unavailable, revisit the repository release and architecture. A missing package is often a repository configuration problem rather than a Compose problem.
Permission denied on /var/run/docker.sock
The daemon socket is root-owned by default. Test with sudo docker compose version and sudo docker run hello-world. If those work, either continue using sudo or add only trusted administrators to the Docker group, then start a new login session. Do not make the socket world-writable and do not expose the daemon on an unauthenticated TCP port.
The Docker daemon is inactive or will not start
- Inspect the service:
sudo systemctl status docker. - Start it if it is simply inactive:
sudo systemctl start docker. - Read the systemd journal for the failure and its preceding configuration error:
sudo journalctl -u docker --no-pager -n 100. - Only after the daemon is healthy, retry
sudo docker run hello-worldand then your Compose command.
Compose cannot repair a failed daemon. Investigate storage capacity, invalid daemon configuration, runtime conflicts, and service logs before changing a Compose file.

- Compare the repository suite with the exact value shown by

Compose starts but the project fails
Once docker compose version succeeds, errors such as an invalid YAML file, an unavailable image, a port already in use, or a bind-mount permission problem are project-level issues. Use docker compose config to render and validate the merged configuration, docker compose ps to inspect service state, and docker compose logs to read service output. Keep daemon troubleshooting separate from application troubleshooting.
How to handle Compose versions in production
Do not hard-code one universal Compose version in a general VPS procedure. Available package versions vary with distribution, release, architecture, repository metadata, and update timing. The repository method intentionally follows the package version offered by the configured source.
Pin a specific version only when reproducibility, a validated deployment, or a formal change-control process requires it. Record the distribution release, architecture, Engine version, CLI version, Compose version, and package source together. Test upgrades on a staging VPS, then update the production host through the same controlled process. For a manual binary, retain the exact release identifier and checksum information supplied by Docker’s release instructions.
Final installation checklist
- Identify the VPS distribution, release, and architecture.
- Remove only conflicting packages that you no longer need.
- Configure the matching Docker repository and refresh package metadata.
- Install
docker-ce,docker-ce-cli,containerd.io,docker-buildx-plugin, anddocker-compose-plugin. - Check and start Docker with systemd.
- Run
sudo docker run hello-world. - Run
docker compose version, addingsudoif your user is not authorized for the Docker socket. - Use the space-separated
docker composecommand for projects. - Grant Docker-group access only to trusted administrators, or continue using
sudo. - Document versions and repository details if the VPS is part of a reproducible production deployment.
When the checklist passes, Compose V2 is installed as a Docker CLI plugin and ready to manage Compose projects. If it does not, determine whether the failure is package discovery, CLI-plugin discovery, socket permission, or daemon health before changing application configuration.
