To install developer tools on a supported Chromebook, first enable Google’s Linux development environment, then use its Debian Terminal and the APT package manager. Linux runs in an environment alongside ChromeOS; installing a package there does not install it directly into ChromeOS. Setup can take 10 minutes or more, and device compatibility or work- and school-administrator policies may prevent it.
What the Chromebook Linux environment provides
Google calls this feature the Linux development environment. After setup, the Chromebook opens a Terminal connected to a Debian environment. From there, you can run Linux commands, customize the shell, and install packages using APT. As Google explains, “You have a Debian environment. You can run Linux commands, install more tools using the APT package manager, and customize your shell.” Google’s Chromebook Linux setup guide describes the setup and its limitations.
The environment is off by default. Before starting, check that the Chromebook model supports Linux. If the device is managed by a workplace or school, its administrator may have disabled the feature; ask the administrator if the setup option is missing or unavailable.
Enable Linux development environment
- Open Settings. On the Chromebook, select the time or system tray, then select Settings.
- Open the developer settings. Select About ChromeOS > Developers.
- Start Linux setup. Beside Linux development environment, select Set up.
- Complete the prompts. Follow the setup flow. Google says setup may take 10 minutes or more. When it finishes, a Terminal window opens with the Debian environment.
If you do not see Set up, do not assume that a different menu path will enable Linux. The device may not support it, or administrator policy may block it. Check Google’s device support guidance linked from its setup page, and contact the administrator on a managed Chromebook.

Update package information before installing
APT uses package information to locate available software. In the Linux Terminal, refresh that information before trying to install a package:
sudo apt-get update
Enter the password if the Terminal requests one, then let the command finish. If it reports an error, read the message before proceeding: a failed update means APT may not have current package information. Google’s troubleshooting guidance also documents this command:
Rank #2
- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
This combined command updates package information and then performs a distribution upgrade. It is a troubleshooting step in Google’s guidance, not a requirement to run before every installation. Review the Terminal’s proposed changes before confirming them, especially if it says packages will be removed or substantially changed.

sudo apt install package-name
Replace package-name with the exact Debian package name for the tool you want. The name shown on a project’s website or in its documentation may differ from its Debian package name, so verify the name and installation instructions with the project or a trustworthy Debian package source. Do not guess: a package may be unavailable in the repositories configured for this environment, or a similarly named package may be something else.
- Open the Linux Terminal if it is not already open.
- Run
sudo apt-get updateand wait for it to complete successfully. - Run
sudo apt install package-namewith the verified package name. - Read APT’s summary of packages to be installed or changed. Continue only if the proposed action matches what you intend to install.
- Wait for installation to finish. If the command reports that it cannot locate the package, check the package name and whether the software is available through the configured Debian repositories.
These commands install software in the Debian environment, not as a ChromeOS application. The fact that a program runs on Linux in general does not establish that it is available through the repositories on this Chromebook.

Understand the security and hardware limits
Linux apps share an environment
Google says Linux apps run inside the same sandbox. A harmful Linux app can affect other Linux apps, although Google says it cannot affect the rest of the Chromebook. Files and permissions you share with Linux are available to all Linux apps in that environment. Share only files the Linux apps need, and be cautious about granting access to sensitive folders.
Some hardware and workflows are unsupported
Google’s cited setup guidance lists cameras, Android emulators, and hardware acceleration—including GPU and video decode—as not yet supported in Linux. It says Android devices are supported over USB, while other devices are not yet supported. These limits matter if a developer tool depends on a camera, emulator, GPU acceleration, video decoding, or a USB peripheral. Check Google’s current guidance and the tool’s own requirements before choosing the Chromebook Linux environment for that workflow.

Troubleshoot setup and package installation
The Linux setup option is missing or disabled
- Confirm that the Chromebook model supports the Linux development environment using the device guidance linked from Google’s setup page.
- If the Chromebook belongs to a workplace or school, ask its administrator whether Linux is blocked by policy.
APT cannot find a package
- Check that the package name is the Debian package name, not just the product or project name.
- Run
sudo apt-get updateand check whether it completes without errors before retrying. - Confirm that the software is available through the repositories configured in the Debian environment. Do not assume every Linux application is packaged there.
A change does not take effect
Google recommends restarting the Chromebook and updating packages when troubleshooting, and notes that a restart may be needed for changes to take effect. Linux also automatically checks for new packages after initial setup and every 24 hours while it is running. If you restart, reopen the Terminal and check whether the issue remains.
When this setup is a good fit
The Linux development environment is useful when the tools you need can run in Debian and do not depend on unsupported hardware features. It is not a way to install packages directly into ChromeOS, and its usefulness depends on Chromebook support, administrator policy, software availability in the configured repositories, and the hardware capabilities your workflow needs. Check those constraints before relying on it for a particular development task.
