To install a CurseForge mod on a dedicated Hytale server, download a file that matches the server’s Hytale build, copy the plugin or asset-pack file into the server’s mods/ directory, restart the server, and read the startup log. You must also install every dependency listed on the project page. A mod file in the directory is not necessarily active in a particular world, so enable it in that world’s settings when the server or client workflow requires it.
Hytale is server-side first: most CurseForge projects are Java plugins or asset packs, normally distributed as .jar files. Client-only installation uses a different UserData/Mods folder and does not replace the server installation.
Understand what you are installing
CurseForge groups Hytale content into three broad categories:
- Packs add assets or other content.
- Plugins are Java modifications built against Hytale’s API.
- Bootstrap/Early Plugins perform lower-level class transformations and should be used only when a project specifically requires that level of access.
On a dedicated server, the relevant copy belongs in that server instance’s mods/ directory. Installing a project in your local Hytale client affects your own game files or worlds; it does not automatically copy the project to a remote server. Conversely, a server plugin may require no separate client installation if its project page describes it as server-side.

Because Hytale is in Early Access, a plugin can be rejected even when the file looks correct. The project’s supported Hytale build, required dependencies, and any installation notes take priority over the filename.
Prepare the server before adding a mod
Do these checks before copying anything. They prevent most failed starts and make recovery straightforward.

Compare the server’s current build with the project’s supported game version. Do not assume that a file made for an earlier Early Access build will load on a newer one.
- Read the project’s dependency list. Download each required dependency in a compatible version. A missing dependency can stop a plugin from loading even when the main file is present.
- Back up the server and worlds. For a client installation, back up
UserData/Saves. For a dedicated server, use the host’s backup control or copy the server data before testing. CurseForge recommends routine backups during Early Access. - Confirm file access. You need permission to upload files to the server’s root or mod directory, restart the process, and view its log. If a host hides those controls, ask the host how its Hytale mod workflow is implemented.
- Record the original state. Note the server build, existing files in
mods/, and the time of the backup. This makes it easier to identify the one change that caused a failure.
Install a supported project through the CurseForge app
The desktop app is the simplest route when the project is supported by the app. CurseForge’s January 14, 2026 beginner guide uses the following flow.
- Install and open the CurseForge desktop app. Allow it to detect the Hytale installation.
- Open the Hytale page and select Discover or Browse.
- In Browse, filter by mod type and Hytale game version. Check the project page for dependencies and server/client notes.
- Open the project and click Install when that button is available. The app downloads the supported file into the Hytale mod location.
- Launch Hytale through CurseForge or the official launcher.
- Open Worlds. For an existing world, open its settings, select the mod, and choose Save world settings. For a new world, select Create World, open the settings cog, select the mod, apply the settings, and create the world.
The app manages the download and can make updates easier, but an app installation still needs to be enabled for the intended world. Seeing a project in the app does not mean it is active in every save.
Install a project manually from the CurseForge website
Manual installation is required when a project is not supported by the app, and it gives you exact control over the file you deploy.

- Open the project’s CurseForge page and review its Hytale version, mod type, dependencies, and author instructions.
- Choose Install via app if the project supports that route. Otherwise open the download dropdown and choose Download file manually. The project’s Files tab also provides downloadable versions.
- Keep the downloaded file unchanged until you have checked its extension and instructions. Do not rename a file merely to make it appear compatible.
- For a client installation, move it to the Hytale mod folder described below. For a dedicated server, upload it to the server’s
mods/directory instead. - Restart Hytale or the server after adding or changing files.
- Enable the project in the target world’s settings where required, then check the client or server log for validation and dependency messages.
If the project page says that a ZIP must be extracted, follow that instruction rather than applying a general rule. Some ZIP packages are intended to remain zipped; others need to be unpacked so that their expected manifest and asset paths are visible.

Find the correct Hytale mods folder
The safest discovery method is to open the launcher’s own directory shortcut rather than guessing a path. In the Hytale Launcher, select the settings cog, choose Open directory, then open UserData and Mods. In CurseForge, open the Hytale tab menu and choose Open Mods Folder.

UserData/Mods is global to the client installation. A world-specific UserData/Saves/<worldname>/mods directory has a narrower scope. Do not place a server file in a client folder and expect a remote server to see it.
Install the mod on a dedicated Hytale server
Use this procedure for a server that players join over a network, whether it runs on your own machine or through a hosting control panel.
- Stop or prepare a maintenance window. Avoid changing the directory while the server is writing world data.
- Back up the server. Include the world saves and configuration needed to restore the previous working state.
- Verify the file. Confirm that it is the server-compatible plugin or asset pack, matches the server’s Hytale build, and has all required dependencies available.
- Open the server instance directory. Use the host’s file manager, SFTP, or local filesystem access. Locate the directory named
mods/beside the server files. If it does not exist, follow the server package’s documented directory layout instead of creating a random folder elsewhere. - Upload the file directly into
mods/. A typical Java plugin is a.jar. Keep the project’s required filename and do not put it inside an extra nested directory unless the author explicitly instructs you to do so. - Add dependencies. Place each required dependency in the same server mod directory or in the location specified by that project.
- Start or restart the server. A running process normally will not discover a newly uploaded plugin until it is restarted.
- Read the startup log from the beginning. Look for successful registration, dependency failures, duplicate-plugin warnings, validation errors, or compatibility messages. Early Access checks can reject a mismatched plugin or asset pack.
- Test in a safe world or after confirming the backup. Join with a test account, exercise the mod’s documented feature, and watch the log for errors that appear only after a world loads.
If a provider offers a one-click Hytale mod installer, use it only when you can still identify the resulting server mods/ directory, restart the process, inspect logs, and restore a backup. Those controls are more important than the installer’s label.

Enable a mod in the intended world
Copying a file is installation, not activation. Hytale’s world settings determine which installed content a world uses.
Existing world
- Open Worlds.
- Right-click the world you want to change.
- Select the mod or mods to enable.
- Click Save world settings.
New world
- Choose Create World.
- Open the settings cog.
- Select the required mods and apply the settings.
- Create the world.
If a client mod does not appear, first confirm that the file is directly in UserData/Mods, restart Hytale, and then return to the world settings. A file hidden in a second folder level, left in a download directory, or copied only to a server will not appear in the client’s mod selector.
Know which file types belong in the folder

For an extracted ZIP, check the expected location of manifest.json. If extraction creates an outer folder containing another folder that holds the manifest, the project may require you to move the inner content up one level. Use the author’s layout instructions rather than guessing.
Check compatibility and dependencies systematically
Version matching is the first diagnostic step whenever a server rejects a mod. Compare three things:

- The Hytale build listed for the downloaded project file.
- The versions of every dependency named by the project.
Do not treat a newer file as automatically compatible. During Early Access, API and validation changes can make a plugin built for one release fail on another. If a project lists separate client and server files, download the server variant for the dedicated instance. If it lists a required library or companion plugin, install that dependency before testing the main project.

Duplicate copies can also cause a failure. Keep one intended version of each plugin in the active mods/ directory and remove old files that have the same plugin identity. The startup log is the authority for which file was discovered and why it was accepted or rejected.
Troubleshoot common installation failures
The server stops starting immediately after adding one mod
- Stop trying additional changes and restore the most recent backup if the world is at risk.
- Remove the newly added file from the server’s
mods/directory. - Start the server and confirm that the previous configuration works.
- Read the failed startup log for build, dependency, validation, or duplicate-plugin messages.
- Check the project for a file updated for the server’s current Hytale build, then test that version alone.
If the server boots after removal, the isolated mod or one of its dependencies is the likely cause. Do not delete world data as a first response.
The server starts, but the feature is missing
- Confirm that the file is in the active server instance’s
mods/directory, not a parent directory or a different server profile. - Check the startup log for a registration line and for a dependency that was skipped.
- Verify that the world was created or saved with the mod enabled when the project requires world activation.
- Make sure players are connecting to the same server instance that you modified.
The client mod does not appear
- Use Hytale Launcher → settings cog → Open directory →
UserData→Modsto verify the location. - In CurseForge, use the Hytale tab menu’s Open Mods Folder command.
- Move the file directly into
UserData/Mods; remove an accidental extra nesting level. - Restart Hytale and enable the mod in the relevant world’s settings.
A ZIP package fails to load
Read the author’s instructions to determine whether the ZIP should remain compressed. If extraction is required, check that manifest.json is at the expected level and that assets were not placed inside an unintended outer folder. Loose JSON files placed directly in Mods are usually a sign that the package structure was unpacked incorrectly.
The mod is rejected as incompatible
Return to the project’s file list and select a file that explicitly supports the server’s current Hytale build. Then install the stated dependencies in compatible versions. A restart after every file change makes the next log easier to interpret.
The log reports a duplicate plugin
Stop the server, inspect mods/ for older copies or duplicate downloads, and leave only the version you intend to run. Restart and confirm that the warning has disappeared before testing gameplay.

App installation versus manual installation

Choose the app for a supported client project when convenience matters. Choose manual installation when you need a specific file, the project is not app-supported, or you are deploying to a dedicated server. In either case, version checks, dependencies, world activation, backups, and log review remain your responsibility.
What to verify with a server host
A host is suitable for modded Hytale operation only if its controls support the complete lifecycle, not merely file uploads.

If you cannot see the log or restore a backup, test new mods on a separate instance first. A control panel that hides the actual instance path can make an apparently successful upload ineffective.
Update or remove a mod safely
- Back up the server or the relevant client world before changing versions.
- Stop the dedicated server, or close Hytale for a client change.
- Remove the old file only after identifying its exact filename and plugin identity.
- Install the replacement file and any matching dependency updates.
- Restart and inspect the log for validation and duplicate warnings.
- Open the world settings and confirm that the intended version remains enabled.
- Test the world before allowing normal play. If the update causes a failure, restore the backup or revert to the previously working file.
Removing a plugin file can make a server boot again, but it does not automatically undo changes that the plugin already made to a world. This is why a pre-change save is more reliable than relying on file deletion alone.
Use a repeatable installation routine
For every new CurseForge project, follow the same order: identify whether it is a pack, plugin, or bootstrap/early plugin; match its file to the Hytale build; install dependencies; back up the destination; copy the file to the correct client or server scope; restart; enable it for the intended world; and read the log before inviting players. That sequence separates file placement, activation, and compatibility checks, so a failure points to a specific stage instead of leaving the whole installation ambiguous.
