Install Coolify on a fresh, supported Linux VPS with SSH access, then run the project’s automated installer: curl -fsSL https://cdn.coollabs.io/coolify/install.sh | bash. The script prints the dashboard address. Create the first administrator account immediately, save the generated environment file, and put production access behind a domain, HTTPS, key-based SSH, and a restricted firewall.
Coolify’s current documented minimum is 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM, and 10 GB of free disk. That is the capacity for Coolify itself, not a complete production budget: Docker images, application builds, databases, persistent volumes, logs, and backups all consume additional resources.

What you are installing
Coolify is a self-hosted deployment platform that runs on a Linux server and uses Docker to build and run applications. A VPS is the usual starting point because it provides a public IP address, persistent storage, and administrative access without requiring you to maintain physical hardware.
The installation creates a Coolify instance on one server. From its dashboard you can connect Git sources, register additional deployment servers over SSH, and deploy applications to those servers. The initial host can run both Coolify and workloads, but separating roles becomes useful when production traffic, builds, databases, or backup jobs need isolation.

Coolify’s official guide describes the baseline plainly: “Coolify needs 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM, and 10 GB disk space to run.” It also states that you need “a server with SSH access.” Treat both statements as minimum requirements rather than a recommended production size.
Prerequisites and compatibility
Choose a supported architecture and Linux image
Confirm whether the VPS is amd64 or arm64 before provisioning it. Use a supported 64-bit Linux distribution supplied by your VPS provider. Coolify documents Debian, Ubuntu, Red Hat-family distributions, SUSE, Arch, Alpine, and 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS options. Some distributions, and some non-LTS Ubuntu releases, require a manual installation path rather than the fully automated flow below. Check the current Coolify documentation for the exact status of the image you intend to use.

A fresh server is preferable. Coolify’s server validation can install Docker and restart the Docker service; doing that on a machine that already runs important containers can interrupt them or create conflicting configuration.
Meet the minimum resources

The figures in the table are the Coolify project’s 2026 documented minimums. They do not predict how many applications a server can host. Size the VPS around your actual image sizes, build concurrency, database growth, backup retention, and expected traffic, and leave headroom so a build or backup does not exhaust the disk.
Prepare networking and credentials
- Give the VPS a reachable IPv4 address, IPv6 address, or stable hostname, as appropriate for your deployment.
- Make sure the SSH port is reachable from your workstation. Port 22 is the usual default, but use the port configured on your server.
- Create an SSH key pair on your workstation and install the public key for the server account. Test the key before starting the installer.
- Know the login user and whether it can become root with
sudo. The automated installation can be run as root or by a sudo-capable account according to the server guide. - Plan firewall rules for SSH, the Coolify dashboard, and the ports required by the applications you will deploy. Do not open every port merely to make troubleshooting easier.
Provision the VPS
1. Select the image and capacity
Create a VPS with a supported Linux image and the correct architecture. Select at least 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM, and 10 GB of free disk for Coolify itself; increase those values when the machine will build images, host databases, retain logs, or store backups. Record the public address, operating-system version, login user, and SSH port.
2. Evaluate the provider on operational factors
The cheapest monthly plan is not automatically the best deployment host. Compare the characteristics that affect availability and administration:

3. Configure the provider firewall before connecting
Allow inbound SSH from your administration network, using the server’s actual SSH port. Add only the public ports needed for Coolify’s initial access and for the applications you intend to expose. Keep a provider console or rescue method available in case a firewall rule blocks your own connection.

Connect over SSH and verify the server
From your workstation, connect with the key you created. Replace the example user, address, and key path with your own values:
ssh -i ~/.ssh/your_key user@your_server_ipIf your server uses a nonstandard SSH port, include it with -p:
ssh -p 2222 -i ~/.ssh/your_key user@your_server_ipAfter login, confirm that the account can obtain administrative privileges, that the machine has outbound internet access for package and image downloads, and that the disk has the free space you planned. Do not continue until key authentication works reliably; losing the only administrative path during installation turns a routine setup into a recovery exercise.

Stop or migrate any unrelated containers before registering a server so that this operation cannot disrupt an existing service.
Install Coolify with the official command
1. Run the automated installer
On the VPS, run the project’s documented command exactly:
curl -fsSL https://cdn.coollabs.io/coolify/install.sh | bashThe command downloads the current installation script and pipes it to Bash. Because this is a remote script, run it only on the server you intend to dedicate to Coolify, and keep the installer address under review as Coolify releases change. If your security policy does not permit piping downloaded content to a shell, download the script for inspection first and follow the project’s manual-installation instructions for your distribution.
2. Wait for completion
Keep the SSH session open while packages, Docker components, and Coolify services are configured. A slow VPS or a large package update can take time. Read the terminal output rather than assuming that a returned prompt means the dashboard is ready.

3. Record the dashboard address
At the end, the installer prints a dashboard URL. Initial HTTP setup commonly uses port 8000, so the address may resemble http://server-address:8000. Use the exact address printed by your installation; do not substitute a guessed port or hostname.
4. Open the dashboard and register the first administrator
Open the printed address in a browser from a network allowed by your firewall. Create the first administrator account immediately. The first registrant can gain control of the instance, so do not leave the registration screen exposed while you postpone setup, and do not share the registration URL publicly.
If the page does not load, verify the VPS firewall, provider firewall, server address, and the port shown by the installer. Confirm from the VPS that Coolify’s services are running, and inspect the installer output for a failed dependency or Docker error before changing unrelated settings.
Protect the installation before production use
Put the dashboard behind a domain and HTTPS
Create a DNS record for a domain or subdomain that points to the VPS. In Coolify, configure the instance or proxy to use that hostname and obtain HTTPS through the supported certificate flow. Use the domain for normal administration instead of continuing with a raw IP and initial HTTP port. HTTPS protects credentials and session cookies in transit and makes browser security behavior predictable.

Once HTTPS access is confirmed, remove any public exposure that is no longer required, provided your Coolify configuration and deployed services do not depend on it.
Restrict SSH
- Keep key-based authentication and test a second administrative key before disabling a working one.
- Limit inbound SSH to a trusted office, VPN, or management network when practical.
- Use a dedicated administrative account with
sudorather than sharing a root password. - Retain a provider console or rescue path and document how to use it.
- Review authorized keys periodically and remove keys that no longer belong to administrators.
Apply least-privilege firewall rules
Permit SSH and the public ports required by the dashboard, reverse proxy, and deployed applications. Keep database ports, internal service ports, and Docker management interfaces private unless a specific architecture requires otherwise. Coordinate provider-level and host-level firewalls so that both layers express the same intended policy.
Back up Coolify’s secrets
Back up /data/coolify/source/.env to protected storage. The file contains installation secrets, including the APP_KEY needed for restoration. Treat this backup as sensitive: restrict access, encrypt it at rest, and do not commit it to a public repository or paste it into support channels. A backup that omits this file may not be sufficient to restore the instance.

Back up data and test restoration
Schedule backups for databases and persistent volumes, not only for the VPS boot disk. Define retention, off-server storage, and ownership for each backup. Perform a restoration test on a separate or disposable environment and record the steps, expected downtime, and credentials required. A backup plan without a tested restore path is only an assumption.
Control updates and changes
Document who can upgrade Coolify, Docker, the operating system, and deployed images. Before a change, capture a current backup and note the rollback method. Monitor release notes and the supported-distribution list because the installer and compatibility requirements are release-sensitive.
Complete the first Coolify configuration
Verify the localhost server
After signing in, inspect the server list and verify the localhost server created by the installation. Confirm that Coolify can reach Docker and that the server reports the expected resources. Resolve SSH, Docker, or permission warnings before deploying an application.
Add deployment servers when the workload warrants it
For a separate deployment host, create or select an account with the required SSH key authorization, enter the server address and SSH port, and run Coolify’s validation. Validation can install Docker and restart it, so use a fresh server or schedule the operation during a maintenance window. Separate servers can isolate production workloads from the control plane, but they add networking, patching, monitoring, and backup responsibilities.

Add the Git provider or repository source in the dashboard, authorize the access required for the project, and select a repository and branch. Keep repository credentials scoped to the projects that need them. Confirm that a private repository can be cloned by the target deployment server before attempting a production release.
Deploy a small test application
Use a noncritical application to validate the complete path: source checkout, image build or image pull, container startup, health checks, proxy routing, logs, and rollback behavior. Check that DNS and HTTPS resolve correctly from an external network. Only after this test succeeds should you move production services or databases.

There is no universal best layout. Start with one host only when its failure domain and capacity are acceptable, and plan the migration path before the first production deployment.

Choose how users reach Coolify and your applications

Use the initial IP access only for setup and diagnosis. Make the domain-based HTTPS path the normal administrative route, then limit direct access to any temporary port that is no longer needed.
Capacity planning and monitoring
Watch CPU, memory, disk utilization, and Docker image growth from the first deployment. A server can satisfy the documented minimum while still failing under a build or database workload. Investigate repeated memory pressure, swap activity, long build queues, slow disk operations, and rapidly growing logs before they become outages.
- CPU pressure: build jobs and compression may starve application processes. Reduce build concurrency, schedule builds, or add CPU capacity.
- Memory pressure: containers may be killed or builds may fail. Identify the largest processes, set sensible application limits, and increase RAM when demand is legitimate.
- Disk pressure: Docker layers, logs, database files, and backups can fill the volume. Set retention, remove unused images safely, move backups off-server, and expand storage before free space reaches zero.
- Network pressure: image pulls, backups, and user traffic compete for bandwidth. Schedule large transfers and verify the provider’s traffic policy.
Record baseline usage after the test deployment and review trends rather than reacting only to an alert. Capacity decisions should be based on your applications and retention policies; Coolify’s minimum figures alone cannot predict workload capacity.
Troubleshooting common installation problems
SSH connection refused or timed out
Check the VPS state, public address, SSH port, provider firewall, host firewall, and the source network from which you are connecting. If the port is correct but the service is unavailable, use the provider console or rescue mode to inspect SSH configuration and firewall rules. Do not repeatedly change keys until network reachability is established.
The installer stops on a package or Docker error
Read the final error lines and confirm that the distribution and architecture are supported. Verify outbound DNS and HTTPS access, free disk, administrative privileges, and that no existing Docker installation or container stack conflicts with the setup. On a non-LTS or otherwise unsupported image, use the documented manual installation route instead of forcing the automated script.

Use the exact address and port printed by the installer. Check both provider and host firewalls, confirm that the server has the expected public address, and inspect whether Coolify and its proxy containers are running. If you later changed DNS, test the raw address and the hostname separately to distinguish routing from application issues.
First-account registration is unavailable
Complete registration immediately after installation. If another person registered first, treat the instance as compromised: restrict access, rotate credentials and secrets, inspect users and deployments, and restore from a known-good backup if you cannot establish control.
A deployment fails after the server is added
Run server validation again and confirm that the authorized SSH key belongs to the account Coolify uses. Check Docker availability, disk space, repository permissions, build logs, image architecture, DNS, and the application’s required environment variables. A successful Coolify installation does not guarantee that an arbitrary application has a valid build or runtime configuration.
HTTPS or a custom domain fails
Verify that the DNS record points to the correct VPS, that the required public ports reach the reverse proxy, and that no second proxy is intercepting traffic. Allow certificate issuance to complete, then test from an external network. Keep the initial address available only as a controlled recovery path while you correct DNS or certificate configuration.
