Install Cloth Config API only when another mod lists it as a dependency. Choose the jar for your exact Minecraft version and loader, put it in the active instance’s mods folder, and add the matching loader API when using Fabric or Quilt. Fabric and Quilt use the Fabric Cloth Config artifact; Forge and NeoForge require their own artifacts.
What Cloth Config API is—and what it is not
Cloth Config API is a library that supplies configuration screens inside Minecraft. The project describes it as “A library that draws the in-game settings screens other mods use.” CurseForge labels the project “Config Screen API for Minecraft.” It does not add blocks, biomes, creatures, dimensions, tools, or other playable content by itself.
You install it because a separate mod was built against Cloth Config. That dependent mod may use Cloth Config for a graphical settings menu, and the loader checks for the library before it starts the mod. If the dependency is absent, the dependent mod can fail to load even though its own jar is present.
There is no single universal Cloth Config download. A file must match two things at the same time:

- the Minecraft version used by the profile; and
- the mod loader used by that profile: Fabric, Quilt, Forge, or NeoForge.
A jar for the wrong loader can be ignored during mod discovery. In that situation, Minecraft behaves as if Cloth Config is missing and the dependent mod reports a missing-library error.
Choose the right Cloth Config file
Use the project’s official download table or an established project page on Modrinth or CurseForge. Filter the files by Minecraft version and loader, then check the dependency’s required Cloth Config version range. Do not select a file solely because its filename looks close or because it is the newest release on the page.

Quilt is the easy one to misread: use the Fabric Cloth Config artifact, not a Forge or NeoForge file. You still need Quilted Fabric API for the same Minecraft version. Conversely, a Fabric profile needs Fabric API, and a Forge or NeoForge profile needs the corresponding loader-specific Cloth Config artifact.
Check the profile before downloading
Perform these checks in the launcher before opening a download page:
- Identify the profile or instance you intend to run.
- Record the exact Minecraft version shown for that profile.
- Record whether it uses Fabric, Quilt, Forge, or NeoForge, including the loader version if the launcher displays it.
- Confirm which mod is requesting Cloth Config and read the version range in that mod’s dependency information or error message.
- Note which game directory or instance folder that profile uses. A launcher can have more than one profile, and two profiles can otherwise appear to share the same
modsdirectory.
These details determine the correct row in the project’s download table. A newer Cloth Config release for a different Minecraft version is not a safe substitute, and a correct version built for another loader is still incompatible.

Install Cloth Config API step by step
1. Open a trusted project page
Use the official Cloth Config project download table, Modrinth, or CurseForge. Project pages show versioned files and publication or update dates that change frequently, so treat the page’s current filters as the source of truth rather than relying on an old filename copied from a guide.

Select the exact Minecraft version from the profile and then select its loader. On a Fabric profile, choose the Fabric artifact. On Quilt, choose the Fabric artifact. On Forge or NeoForge, choose that loader’s own artifact. If the page offers several files for the same game version, open each file’s metadata and confirm the loader before downloading.
3. Check the dependency range
Read the dependent mod’s stated Cloth Config requirement. A mod may require a minimum version, a bounded range, or a particular major release. Select a file that satisfies that range while still targeting your Minecraft version. “Latest” is useful only when it also meets both conditions.
4. Download the jar
Download the actual mod jar, not a source archive, changelog, or installer. Keep the file’s original name while you move it; changing a name can make it harder to identify duplicate or stale copies later.
5. Add the loader API when required
For Fabric, download Fabric API for the same Minecraft version and place it with Cloth Config. For Quilt, download Quilted Fabric API for the same Minecraft version. These are separate libraries: Cloth Config supplies configuration screens, while the loader API supplies the platform services expected by mods. Forge and NeoForge do not need an additional Cloth Config dependency beyond their matching Cloth Config artifact.

6. Close Minecraft completely
Exit the game and the launcher’s running instance before changing files. A running process can keep a jar open or leave you testing an unchanged file set.
7. Open the active instance’s mods folder
Use the launcher’s instance or game-directory option to open the folder belonging to the profile you checked earlier. Do not assume that the default game directory is the directory used by every profile. If you maintain separate modpacks, each should have its own game directory or otherwise clearly isolated mods folder.
8. Copy the jars into that folder
Place the Cloth Config jar in the profile’s mods folder. On Fabric also place Fabric API there; on Quilt place Quilted Fabric API there. Keep the dependent mod and its other required libraries in the same instance.
9. Remove stale and duplicate Cloth Config files
Inspect the folder for older files whose names contain cloth-config or cloth-api. Remove obsolete copies and resolve duplicate versions so the loader sees one intended Cloth Config jar. Leaving an older file beside the new one can cause a conflict or make troubleshooting ambiguous.
10. Launch the same profile
Start the profile whose folder you edited, not a similarly named profile. The dependent mod should now pass its dependency check and load. Open that mod’s configuration screen if it provides one; the presence of a settings screen is a practical confirmation that the library is being used.

How to confirm that the installation worked
A successful installation is demonstrated by the dependent mod loading in the intended profile. Cloth Config does not need to add a separate item or world feature, so do not judge success by searching the creative inventory. Instead, check the loader’s startup output or mod list and then open the dependent mod’s settings entry.
- The profile launches without a missing-Cloth-Config dependency error.
- The dependent mod appears in the loaded-mod list for that profile.
- Its configuration button or settings screen opens when the mod supplies one.
- The loaded file corresponds to the profile’s Minecraft version and loader.
If the game still reports the library as missing, stop and compare the profile, folder, loader, and version rather than downloading random copies.
Troubleshoot a “Missing Cloth Config” error

Use this diagnostic order
- Read the error’s requested Minecraft version, loader, and Cloth Config version range.
- Check the launcher profile you actually started.
- Open that profile’s game directory and inspect its
modsfolder. - Confirm the jar’s loader: Fabric/Quilt uses the Fabric artifact; Forge and NeoForge use their respective artifacts.
- Confirm the Minecraft version in the jar’s project metadata matches the profile.
- For Fabric, verify Fabric API is present for that version; for Quilt, verify Quilted Fabric API is present for that version.
- Delete stale duplicates, then launch again.
This order matters because a perfect jar in the wrong instance is indistinguishable from a missing jar, and a wrong-loader jar may be skipped before the dependency check runs.

The default launcher can share one game directory between profiles. That arrangement is risky when one profile uses Fabric and another uses Forge, or when profiles target different Minecraft versions. A loader may skip files intended for another loader, while a version-specific mod can prevent the profile from starting.
Use separate game directories for incompatible profiles. Name or document each instance with its Minecraft version and loader, and open the directory from the launcher rather than navigating to a remembered default path. When you switch profiles, verify the folder again before copying jars.

If you deliberately use one shared folder, remove every jar that does not belong to the profile before launching. This is slower and easier to get wrong than isolated directories, especially when several profiles need different Cloth Config releases.

Updating Minecraft changes the compatibility target; it is not merely a matter of replacing one filename. Fabric’s documentation warns that a mod working on one Minecraft version may not work on another. Treat the upgrade as a coordinated update:
- Record the new Minecraft version and loader selected by the profile.
- Check whether the dependent mod has a release supporting that version.
- Download a Cloth Config build filtered for the new version and loader.
- Update Fabric API or Quilted Fabric API when the profile uses Fabric or Quilt.
- Remove the old-version Cloth Config and API jars from that profile’s
modsfolder. - Launch and read the first dependency error if one appears; it may identify another mod that has not yet been updated.
Keep a backup of the old instance until the new profile launches reliably. Do not mix old and new jars in one folder as a way to “cover” both versions; that creates duplicates and makes the loader’s selection unpredictable.
Removing or changing Cloth Config safely
Cloth Config is usually shared by several mods. Before removing it, inspect the profile’s mod list and dependency messages. If any installed mod requires the library, removing the jar will make that mod fail its dependency check. Remove Cloth Config only after removing or replacing every dependent mod, or when you are intentionally repairing the profile.
When changing loaders, remove the old-loader artifact first, then install the new-loader artifact selected for the new profile. Do not rename a Fabric jar to make it appear to be a Forge or NeoForge file; the loader compatibility is built into the artifact.

As of October 15, 2026, release names and project-page dates continue to change, so repeat the version-and-loader checks whenever you install a new modpack or update Minecraft. The compatibility row, not the download count or a familiar filename, is the reliable basis for choosing Cloth Config.
