Godlike.Host offers hosted Project Zomboid servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To run Project Zomboid Build 41.66, install the dedicated server files and deliberately select the Build 41 multiplayer branch. Steam now defaults to Build 42, so a normal current-branch installation is not suitable for a Build 41.66 world. The server and every client must report the same Build 41.66 version before you troubleshoot ports, settings, or mods.
On Windows, install Project Zomboid Dedicated Server from Steam Tools and launch StartServer64.bat. On Linux or another headless machine, install app ID 380870 with SteamCMD and launch start-server.sh. Then configure the ports printed by the server, forward them as UDP, and test from outside the host’s local network.
Before you install: the Build 41.66 requirement
Build 41.66 is an older Build 41 target. Current Steam defaults have moved to Build 42, and Build 41 worlds remain on a separate legacy branch. Do not install a current default-branch server and assume it will open a 41.66 save. Do not point a Build 42 server installation at a Build 41 world.
The branch label shown by Steam can change over time. The cited Steam guide identifies the Build 41 multiplayer branch as b41multiplayer; use that label when it is displayed, but verify the description and the build string reported by Steam and the server console rather than relying on the name alone.

Have these ready
- A Steam account or machine that can install the dedicated-server tool. The dedicated-server download itself can be obtained through SteamCMD with anonymous login.
- A controlled installation directory with enough disk space for the server files, saves, logs, and Workshop content.
- Administrative access to the host operating system, its firewall, and (for an internet server) the router in front of it.
- A Project Zomboid client on the same Build 41.66 branch for the first connection test.
- A backup location for the complete
Zomboiduser folder before you change profiles, worlds, or mods.

The two routes use the same Build 41 branch principle and the same server-side profile and networking checks. Pick one route for the installation; do not mix a Build 42 installation directory with a Build 41 world.
Install Build 41.66 on Windows with Steam Tools
- Show the Tools category. Open Steam Library, enable the Tools filter, and find Project Zomboid Dedicated Server.
- Install the dedicated server. Let Steam finish downloading the tool, then open its Properties.
- Select the legacy branch. Open the Betas tab and select the Build 41 multiplayer branch, shown in the cited guide as
b41multiplayer. If Steam presents a different label, select the entry that explicitly identifies Build 41 multiplayer or legacy support and record the exact build Steam reports. - Launch from the installation directory. Run
StartServer64.bat. Launching the batch file from the installed directory keeps the expected relative paths for the server files and generated data. - Finish first-run setup. The first launch creates the server’s user database and asks you to set an administrator password. Use a strong password and store it separately from any player join password.
- Confirm a complete start. Wait for the console line
*** SERVER STARTED ***. If that line never appears, stop and fix the startup error before changing network settings.
What to record after the first Windows launch
- The branch name displayed in Steam’s Betas tab.
- The exact build string printed by the server console.
- The host’s LAN address and the ports the running server reports.
- The location of the generated
Zomboidfolder and the active server profile.
These details make later troubleshooting deterministic. A server that starts successfully but reports a different build from the client is still not ready for players.

Install Build 41.66 on Linux or a headless machine with SteamCMD
Use a dedicated, controlled directory rather than scattering files through a personal home directory. The cited Steam workflow uses anonymous login, app ID 380870, and validation:

quitThe example path in the guide is Windows-style. On Linux, choose an equivalent absolute directory in your Steam library or service account’s home and run the same SteamCMD operations with that path. The dedicated-server download does not require a second Steam account when anonymous login is accepted.

- Start SteamCMD and log in anonymously.
- Set the controlled installation directory with
force_install_dir. - Run
app_update 380870 validateto download or verify the dedicated-server files. - Select or pin the Build 41 multiplayer/legacy branch when that option is available in your SteamCMD workflow. Do not leave the installation on the current Build 42 default.
- Record the exact build reported by SteamCMD and later by the server console.
- Change to the installed server directory and run
start-server.sh. - Complete the first-run administrator-password prompt and wait for
*** SERVER STARTED ***.
SteamCMD branch syntax and labels can vary, so the decisive check is the resulting build string, not merely a command that completed without an error. If SteamCMD updates the directory to Build 42, stop, select the Build 41 branch, and validate again before creating or opening a world.
Verify that both server and clients are really on 41.66
Perform this check before editing sandbox values or installing mods. Steam’s current default branch can silently move an otherwise valid installation to Build 42, while an existing client may still be on Build 41.66.

- Read the exact build string in the server console after startup.
- Check the branch and build shown by each connecting client.
- Compare the complete strings, including the Build 41 designation, rather than comparing only the major number.
- If they differ, change the out-of-sync installation and restart it before attempting to join.
Keep a written note of the confirmed string for the server and the clients. When a patch arrives, repeat this comparison; a successful file update is not proof that the world and clients are still on the same branch.
Complete first boot safely
After the first successful start, stop the server cleanly before editing any files. Generated configuration normally lives in the user’s Zomboid/Server directory, while the broader Zomboid folder contains saves, server profiles, and logs.

Make a restorable backup
- Stop the server process through its normal shutdown path and wait for it to finish writing.
- Copy the complete
Zomboiduser folder to a separate location. - Give the backup a date and branch name, such as a Build 41 backup, so it cannot be confused with a later Build 42 copy.
- Keep a named copy of the active server profile before each configuration or mod change.
A complete folder backup is more useful than copying only the visible world directory: it preserves saves, profiles, logs, and the information needed to identify what changed.
Start with a vanilla profile
Use the default, unmodded profile for the first test. Confirm that one local or remote client can join with the exact Build 41.66 string. Only after that connection succeeds should you change sandbox settings or add Workshop content. This isolates branch and network failures from configuration failures.
Configure ports, forwarding, and the host firewall
Project Zomboid’s Build 41 networking uses more than one port. The Indie Stone’s official networking announcement describes the game port, 16261 by default, as the port used to handle Steam queries. It describes an additional direct-connection port, 16262 by default. Both values can be changed through server options.

The older Steam guide says to forward 8766 and 16261 for its Steam-server setup, while the later official announcement identifies 16261 and 16262 for the game and direct connection. Build 41 networking changed over time, so do not guess from a generic port list. Inspect the running 41.66 server output and use the exact values it reports.

Forward the ports for an internet server
- Assign the host a stable LAN address so the router rule does not follow a changing DHCP address.
- Create router forwarding rules for every required server port, using the protocol shown by the setup guidance: UDP.
- Point each rule to the host’s stable LAN address and the same internal port the server reports.
- Add matching inbound UDP rules to the operating-system firewall.
- If your router separates external and internal port numbers, keep them identical unless you have a specific reason to translate them, then give clients the external value.
- Test from a machine outside the host’s LAN. A test from the same home network can succeed through local routing even when internet forwarding is wrong.
Keep the public address, the host’s private LAN address, and the configured port distinct. A player on the same network may need the LAN address, while an internet player uses the public address and the externally reachable port.

Join the server from the Project Zomboid client
- Open Project Zomboid and choose Multiplayer.
- Add a server entry.
- Enter the server address and the configured port. Use the public address when connecting from the internet and the LAN address when connecting inside the host’s network.
- Enter the join password if the server profile has one.
- Connect with a client whose branch and exact build match the server.
The first administrator connection may create or use the admin account established during first boot. The administrative password is not automatically the same as the player join password. Keep those credentials separate and do not distribute the administrator password to ordinary players.

Dedicated-server mod configuration has two related but separate fields. The server’s WorkshopItems field contains Workshop item IDs, while Mods contains mod IDs. Both sets must match what the client needs. A client’s local mod manager does not automatically synchronize the dedicated server’s INI file.
Safe mod rollout
- Stop the server cleanly and back up the complete
Zomboidfolder and active profile. - Add a small, known-compatible batch of Workshop item IDs to
WorkshopItems. - Add the corresponding mod IDs to
Mods; do not assume an item’s numeric Workshop ID is the same as its mod ID. - Start the server and watch the console for download, load, or dependency errors.
- Join with a client that has the same required content and exact Build 41.66 branch.
- If the test succeeds, back up again before adding another small batch.
When a client stops at Loading Map or reports a mod error, return to the clean backup, verify both fields, and re-add content in smaller groups. This is faster than trying to identify several simultaneous changes in a live profile.

Updating without breaking a Build 41 world
- Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the complete
Zomboidfolder and label the backup with the current Build 41 branch and date. - Confirm that the update is intended for Build 41, not the current Build 42 default.
- Update or validate the dedicated-server files while the process is stopped.
- Start the server and compare its exact build string with the clients before allowing players back in.
- If the branch or world files no longer match, stop the process and restore the last known-good backup instead of continuing to edit a live installation.
Build 41 saves should remain on the Build 41 branch. A Build 42 server installation must not be used as a shortcut for opening a Build 41 world.

Troubleshoot the problems that occur most often

Self-hosting versus managed hosting for Build 41.66
Both approaches can work, but the important question is whether the service explicitly supports the Build 41.66 branch. A managed host is not automatically compatible simply because it offers Project Zomboid servers.

Choose self-hosting when exact branch and file control matter and you can manage UDP forwarding and backups. Consider managed hosting only after the provider confirms that it can deploy and retain Build 41.66 rather than forcing a Build 42 image.
