For Armored Core VI, the safe ModEngine 2.1 method is to keep the original game files intact, place each mod in a separate folder, point config_armoredcore6.toml at that folder, and start the game with launchmod_armoredcore6.bat. Keep Steam running, use modded sessions offline only, and launch the game normally from Steam whenever you want the unmodded version.

What ModEngine changes in Armored Core VI

ModEngine is a loader: it tells the game to read replacement or additional files from a mod directory while leaving the normal Steam installation available. For Armored Core VI, a common payload is regulation.bin, the game-data file used by many balance, progression, and gameplay modifications. Other projects may contain loose files in a directory structure that ModEngine loads alongside the executable.

The loader does not make incompatible mods compatible. It also does not turn an online game into a safe place for experimentation. Mod Engine’s safety guidance describes the tool as intended for single-player, offline games only. Treat every ModEngine session as offline mod testing: do not enter multiplayer, competitive modes, or any online service while modified files are active.

ModEngine 2.1 is the AC6-capable release identified in the project’s release notes as adding initial Armored Core 6 support. The upstream ModEngine2 README now says development is discontinued and that future work will be done in successor tooling called me3. That status matters when a future Armored Core VI patch changes file formats or breaks the launcher: a fix may need to come from a mod author or successor project rather than a new ModEngine2 release.

Before you install: safety and compatibility checks

Use the correct download source

For this AC6-specific installation, obtain ModEngine 2.1 from the official soulsmods/ModEngine2 releases page, not from a file-rehosting site, a forum attachment, or a repacked archive. The project’s release guidance directs players to its releases page for the current build. A separate Mod Engine safety FAQ, updated in August 2026, says signed Mod Engine applications should come only from modengine.app and warns against mirrors. These instructions are not a reason to trust a similarly named download: verify that the archive came from the authoritative project page for the AC6 release you intend to use.

Confirm your game and mod versions

Open the mod’s documentation before copying anything. Armored Core VI mods can depend on a particular regulation or game version. A package may include more than one alternative regulation.bin; if its instructions say to choose one, copy only the variant that matches your game and the mod’s stated requirements. Do not assume that two files with the same name are interchangeable.

Back up outside the game directory

Make backups before changing the installation. Keep a copy of your save data and the original configuration or game files in a location outside the Armored Core VI directory. The exact save location can vary by installation, so use your existing Steam or Windows save path rather than moving a backup into the game folder. A backup is useful if a mod corrupts a configuration, if an update changes compatibility, or if you need to restore a clean install without guessing which files were changed.

Prepare a clean working layout

  • Close Armored Core VI before extracting files.
  • Keep Steam installed and running; ModEngine’s batch launcher expects the Steam installation.
  • Use a text editor that preserves plain-text TOML formatting.
  • Plan one dedicated folder, normally named mod, for the files ModEngine should load.
  • Read the mod’s own install notes for required regulation versions, optional files, and known conflicts.

Install ModEngine 2.1 step by step

1. Open Armored Core VI’s actual Game folder

  1. Open Steam and go to your Library.
  2. Right-click Armored Core VI and choose Manage, then Browse local files.
  3. Open the Game directory that contains armoredcore.exe. A typical Steam location ends with ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICONGame, but your library may be on another drive.

Use the folder containing armoredcore.exe, not the higher-level Steam common folder. If you cannot see the executable, you are one level too high or have opened a shortcut rather than the installed files.

2. Download the AC6-capable archive

Download the latest available ModEngine 2.1 archive from the official soulsmods/ModEngine2 releases page. Preserve the downloaded archive until the installation works so you can verify which files were installed. Do not run a launcher copied from an unknown mirror simply because its filename matches the release.

Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon - Compatible for PS5 - UK PAL
  • A new action experience from the makers of Dark Souls and Elden Ring
  • Assemble and pilot your own mech
  • 3D manoeuvrability to move freely through three-dimensional fast-paced missions
  • Take on difficult challenges and overwhelm your enemies
  • Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the international version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions. DLC might not work properly unless proper region is selected.

3. Extract the archive beside the executable

Extract the archive’s contents directly into the Game folder, beside armoredcore.exe. After extraction, the ModEngine files, the AC6 configuration file, and the launcher batch file should be in that same directory level. A common mistake is extracting into GameModEngine2.1 and leaving the files one level too deep; the batch file will then point at the wrong location or appear not to work.

4. Create or use the mod folder

Use the included mod folder if the archive provides one. If it does not exist, create a folder named mod beside armoredcore.exe. Put the mod payload inside this directory. For a mod supplied as a single replacement file, that normally means placing regulation.bin directly in Gamemod. For loose-file mods, preserve the directory structure described by the mod author beneath the configured folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Point the configuration at that folder

Open config_armoredcore6.toml in a plain-text editor. The default entry should resemble:

mods = [
  { enabled = true, name = "default", path = "mod" }
]

The important values are enabled = true and path = "mod". If you chose another folder name, change only the path to match it. The path is normally relative to the directory containing the configuration and launcher, so a folder named my_first_mod beside armoredcore.exe would use path = "my_first_mod". Keep the quotation marks and brackets intact; malformed TOML can prevent the launcher from reading the mod list.

6. Start the modded game

  1. Leave Steam running and signed in.
  2. In the Game folder, double-click launchmod_armoredcore6.bat.
  3. Wait for Armored Core VI to start, then check the mod’s documented in-game effect rather than assuming that a launcher window alone proves the files loaded.

The batch file is the modded launch path. Starting the game through the ordinary Steam Play button does not use the ModEngine configuration.

7. Return to a vanilla session

Close the modded game and launch Armored Core VI normally from Steam. ModEngine’s README describes a direct Steam launch as a vanilla instance, so you do not need to delete the mod folder or uninstall the loader just to play the unmodified game. Keep the mod files in place and use the appropriate launcher for the session you want.

Understand the folder layout before adding more mods

Location or file Role What to check
Gamearmoredcore.exe Armored Core VI executable ModEngine files must be placed at this directory level.
Gameconfig_armoredcore6.toml ModEngine configuration The enabled mod entry must point to the folder that actually contains the payload.
Gamemod Default mod payload directory Place regulation.bin or the mod’s documented loose-file structure here.
Gamelaunchmod_armoredcore6.bat Modded launcher Use it while Steam is running; do not substitute the normal Steam shortcut for a modded session.

Think of the configuration as a map. ModEngine loads from the directory named by the path value; it does not search every nearby folder for files. If a mod is inside modSomeModregulation.bin but the author expected the file directly in mod, either move the file or follow that project’s documented structure. An extra wrapper directory is one of the most common reasons a mod appears to do nothing.

Add a mod without overwriting the original installation

For a regulation.bin mod

Read the project’s notes, select the one compatible regulation.bin, and place it in the configured mod directory. Do not replace the copy in the original game directory unless the mod specifically requires a different installation method. Keeping the original files untouched makes it possible to return to a clean Steam launch and makes troubleshooting easier.

For loose files

Some mods add files rather than replacing one regulation file. Copy the complete structure supplied by the author into the folder named in config_armoredcore6.toml. Preserve capitalization and subdirectories. If the package contains an additional top-level folder, inspect it before copying: the files should land where the mod’s instructions expect them, not automatically one directory deeper.

For packages with alternatives

When a download includes options such as different balance settings, install only the selected option. A package containing two alternative regulation.bin files is not asking you to copy both. Rename or archive the unused option outside the active mod folder so ModEngine cannot load it accidentally.

Combining mods and resolving conflicts

ModEngine2 does not merge conflicting files automatically. If two enabled entries provide a file with the same name, the highest-priority file wins; for regulation.bin, that means one mod can silently replace the other instead of combining its changes. The project’s configuration documentation illustrates this priority behavior in its example configuration: ModEngine2 configuration example.

Before combining mods, compare these points:

  • Game or regulation version: both projects must target the version you are running.
  • Payload type: determine whether each mod supplies regulation.bin, loose files, or both.
  • Shared filenames: two copies of the same file require a priority decision or a compatible merge.
  • Launcher requirements: confirm that both projects expect ModEngine2 and the same AC6 launch method.
  • Maintenance: check whether the author has updated the mod after recent Armored Core VI patches.

If two mods each require a different regulation.bin, use one compatible file or a mod-specific merge or patch tool recommended by the authors. Do not assume that placing both files in separate subfolders will merge their changes. Test combinations one at a time so you know which addition caused a crash or missing feature.

Verify that the installation worked

Use a small, documented mod for the first test rather than installing a large collection immediately. Confirm the following in order:

  1. The files beside armoredcore.exe include config_armoredcore6.toml and launchmod_armoredcore6.bat.
  2. The mod payload is inside the exact directory named by the configuration’s path value.
  3. The configuration entry has enabled = true.
  4. Steam is open when you run the batch file.
  5. The game shows the mod’s documented change in an offline single-player session.
  6. A normal Steam launch still starts the unmodded game.

If the mod works, record the game version, the mod version, and the files you installed. That short inventory makes it possible to rebuild the setup after an update without relying on memory.

Troubleshoot common failures

Nothing changes in the game

First check the extraction depth. Open the directory containing armoredcore.exe and confirm that the launcher and configuration are there, not inside a second archive-named folder. Next open config_armoredcore6.toml and compare its path with the real folder name. Finally, inspect the payload location: if the file is in modPackageNameregulation.bin but the mod expects modregulation.bin, remove the extra nesting or follow the package’s own instructions.

The launcher opens but the game fails to load

Temporarily remove the newest mod from the configured folder and launch again. A malformed configuration, a file for a different game version, or an incompatible regulation file can all prevent a clean start. Restore the last known-working layout, then add one change at a time. If the problem began after an Armored Core VI patch, check the mod page and the ModEngine release page for compatibility notes before reinstalling files.

A second mod cancels the first one

Look for duplicate filenames, especially regulation.bin. ModEngine2 gives priority to one file; it does not combine independent edits. Choose a compatible merged build if the author provides one, use the documented patching method, or run the mods separately.

Armored Core VI crashes after a mod update

Re-read the mod’s version requirements and remove stale files left by the previous release. A new package may change its folder structure or replace an earlier regulation variant. If the game still fails, restore your backup or verify the game files through Steam, then reinstall only the files required by the current mod instructions.

Antivirus reports a suspicious file

Heuristic scanners can flag memory-modification tools even when the build is legitimate. Confirm the archive’s origin and, where applicable, the publisher signature before considering an exception. A signed build from an official source may produce a generic heuristic warning; an unsigned copy from a mirror should be treated as unsafe rather than “fixed” by disabling protection. Delete the questionable archive and obtain a fresh copy from the authoritative release source.

Keep modded sessions offline

Do not use the ModEngine launcher to enter Armored Core VI multiplayer or competitive features. The Mod Engine safety FAQ explicitly limits the tool to offline single-player games. The practical separation is simple: use launchmod_armoredcore6.bat only for offline testing, and use the ordinary Steam launch for an unmodded session. If a mod’s instructions ask you to connect online, treat that as a warning and verify the project before proceeding.

Maintain the setup after game updates

Armored Core VI updates can change the regulation data or executable behavior that a mod expects. After every patch, check the mod’s documentation and the ModEngine release page before launching a large mod collection. Test the game unmodded first, then test one mod, then restore the rest of your setup. Keep dated backups of the working configuration and mod folder so you can roll back without guessing which files changed.

Because the upstream ModEngine2 project is marked discontinued, do not interpret the absence of a new ModEngine2 build as proof that a broken mod is safe to force. Compatibility work may move to me3 or be supplied directly by mod authors. A mod that worked last month may require an updated regulation file, a different loader, or a clean reinstall after a game patch.

A safe repeatable workflow

  1. Back up saves and original files outside the Armored Core VI directory.
  2. Read the mod’s supported game or regulation version and identify every payload file.
  3. Download ModEngine 2.1 and the mod from authoritative project pages.
  4. Keep ModEngine beside armoredcore.exe and put payloads in a named folder.
  5. Check the mods entry in config_armoredcore6.toml before every first launch.
  6. Run launchmod_armoredcore6.bat with Steam open, then test offline.
  7. For a vanilla game, close the modded session and launch through Steam normally.
  8. When adding another mod, check duplicate files and test the combination separately.
  9. After a game update, re-check compatibility before restoring the full collection.

This workflow keeps the reversible parts of modding—folders, configuration, and launch choice—separate from the untouched Steam installation, while making version conflicts and unsafe downloads easier to detect.
