Install software from Arch Linux’s official repositories with pacman whenever possible. Search and inspect the package, perform a complete system upgrade, and then install it through pacman while signature verification remains enabled. Only use the Arch User Repository (AUR) when the software is unavailable in the official repositories, and then treat its PKGBUILD and related files as executable code that you must review before building.
This approach avoids arbitrary binary downloads and preserves Arch’s package-signing checks. It does not mean every package outside the official repositories is automatically malicious; it means the amount of trust and review you must supply increases when Arch is no longer distributing the package itself.
What “trusted” means on Arch Linux
There are two separate questions when installing software:

- What instructions or code were used to create the package?
An official repository package addresses the first question through repository metadata, package signatures and the Arch keyring. The packaging work has already been performed by Arch’s repository maintainers, and pacman resolves dependencies from the repositories configured in /etc/pacman.conf.

An AUR package addresses a different availability problem. The AUR supplies community-maintained build instructions, not an official Arch package repository. A PKGBUILD is a shell script that tells makepkg what to download, compile, install and package. A successful build therefore does not prove that the instructions were safe or that every downloaded source is trustworthy.
ArchWiki’s AUR guidance states: “These PKGBUILDs are completely unofficial and have not been thoroughly vetted. Any use of the provided files is at your own risk.” That warning is about the build instructions themselves, even when the final result is installed with a normal Arch tool.
Use the official repositories first
The safest and simplest path is to let pacman find the package in the repositories listed in /etc/pacman.conf. Do not begin by downloading a binary installer from a random website or by installing an AUR helper merely because it is convenient.

Search package names and descriptions with:
pacman -Ss package-nameThe result shows matching repository entries. Check the exact package name rather than assuming that an application’s project name is identical to its Arch package name. If several results appear, identify the package that actually provides the program or library you need.
2. Inspect the package metadata
Before installation, inspect the repository, version, dependencies, packager and other metadata:
pacman -Si package-nameThis step lets you confirm that the package comes from an enabled repository and that the version is the one you intend to install. Read the repository and dependency information instead of treating a matching name as proof that two packages are interchangeable.

3. Refresh databases and complete the upgrade
Arch is a rolling distribution. Update the package databases and upgrade the installed system together:
sudo pacman -SyuInstalling a new package after a partial database refresh can combine stale libraries with newer packages. A full -Syu transaction keeps the system on a coherent set of repository versions. If the transaction reports a conflict or asks for a manual intervention, stop and resolve that issue rather than forcing the installation.
4. Install through pacman
Install the verified package with:
sudo pacman -S package-namepacman resolves dependencies from the configured repositories and verifies the package before committing the transaction. Review the proposed package list and disk-space changes, then confirm only when the package name and source are correct.
Keep package-signature verification enabled
Signature verification is the control that prevents pacman from silently accepting an altered or unauthenticated repository package. Arch’s documented policy for remote packages is equivalent to:
SigLevel = Required DatabaseOptional TrustedOnlyRequired means a package must have a valid signature. DatabaseOptional allows repository database signatures to follow the documented policy while package signatures remain required. TrustedOnly restricts acceptance to keys trusted by the Arch keyring.
These settings are applied globally or per repository in /etc/pacman.conf. Keep the existing signature policy intact unless you understand precisely why a documented configuration change is necessary. Arch’s package-signing documentation warns: “Disabling package signing will allow pacman to install untrusted packages.”

Settings that should not be used as shortcuts
- Do not set
SigLevel = Neverto make an installation proceed. - Do not use
TrustAllto bypass a key or signature warning. - Do not copy a signing key from an unverified forum post and mark it trusted merely to silence an error.
- Do not replace a repository package with an arbitrary downloaded archive because its filename looks official.
A warning is a reason to investigate the system, mirror or keyring, not a prompt to disable the control that produced the warning.
What to do when pacman reports a signature error
Treat an invalid, unknown or expired signature as a blocker until you know why it occurred. The exact message can differ, but the investigation follows a consistent order.
Check the system clock
Incorrect time can make an otherwise valid signature appear outside its validity period. Verify that the system date, time and time zone are correct before changing keys or repository settings.
Check mirror and repository availability
A mirror that is out of sync, unreachable or serving incomplete metadata can cause verification failures. Retry after confirming that the configured mirror is available and that the package database download completed successfully.
Check the Arch keyring
The keyring contains the trusted keys used to validate package signatures. If it is stale or damaged, use the documented pacman-key procedures to repair and repopulate it. Update the keyring through the official repositories when possible, and investigate any key-management error rather than accepting an untrusted key.
Retry the complete transaction
After correcting the clock, mirror or keyring condition, refresh the databases and run a complete upgrade again:

sudo pacman -SyuIf the signature still fails, leave verification enabled and obtain help using the exact error message, repository and package details. A successful installation achieved only by disabling checks is not a safe recovery.

When the package is not in an official repository
First confirm the absence with pacman -Ss. A package may have a different name, may be provided by another package, or may already be available in a repository you have not enabled according to your system’s intended configuration. If it truly is not available, the AUR is the usual next option, but it changes the trust model.
What the AUR provides
The AUR is a community-driven, unofficial collection of build files. It is not an Arch repository of binary packages signed by Arch’s trusted keys. Its entries commonly include a PKGBUILD, an optional .install file, patches and source URLs. Those files can contain commands that execute with elevated privileges during installation or that alter services, users, permissions and system configuration.
Review every build file before running it
Obtain the build directory and inspect all of its contents before invoking makepkg. Read:
- The complete
PKGBUILD, including functions such asprepare(),build()andpackage(). - Any
.installscript, because installation and upgrade hooks can run outside the main packaging function. - Patches and helper scripts referenced by the build files.
- Every source URL, checksum and archive type.
Look for shell commands that modify files outside the package destination, create or enable services, add users, change trust settings, download opaque prebuilt binaries, execute code from temporary directories, or contact unexpected hosts. A short script is not automatically safe, and a popular AUR entry is not a substitute for reading the current files.

Build in a clean working directory
Use a dedicated directory for the package, keep unrelated files out of it, and build with makepkg as a normal user rather than running the build process as root. A clean directory makes it easier to see which files belong to the build and to remove them if you decide not to continue.

makepkgReview the build output and the resulting package name. If the build asks for an unexpected network download, requires a command you did not anticipate, or produces errors that you cannot explain, stop instead of adding flags that bypass checks.
Install only the reviewed local package
After the build completes and you have reviewed the resulting files, install the local package with:
sudo pacman -U ./package-file.pkg.tar.zstThe filename will depend on the package and architecture. pacman -U installs a local package file and can resolve its declared dependencies, but it does not convert an arbitrary download into an official repository package. The package remains the product of the AUR build instructions you reviewed.

The practical trade-off is straightforward: official repositories minimize the trust you must place in build scripts, while the AUR expands software availability by transferring more review responsibility to you.
Why an AUR helper does not make an AUR package official
An AUR helper can automate searching, downloading build files, invoking makepkg and installing the resulting package. Automation changes the interface, not the source of the code or the trust relationship. The helper still processes an unofficial PKGBUILD; it cannot certify that the maintainer, source archive or install script is safe.
If you use a helper, inspect the proposed build files and diffs before approving a build, and understand which command will run at each stage. A helper should never be used as a reason to skip the manual review that an AUR package requires.
Review AUR updates, not just first installations
A package that was acceptable yesterday can become unsafe after a maintainer change or a new commit. Before rebuilding or upgrading an AUR package:

- Look specifically for new binary downloads, service changes, credential access or modifications to repository and trust settings.
- Build only after the changes make sense, then install the reviewed local package with
pacman -U.
Arch’s homepage currently warns of “a high volume of malicious package adoptions and updates in the Arch User Repository.” That is a current warning, not a permanent measurement of every AUR package. It is a reason to review changes on every update rather than trusting a package forever because an earlier version was acceptable.

A repeatable decision process
- Search: run
pacman -Ss package-nameand identify the exact package. - Inspect: run
pacman -Si package-nameand verify repository, version and dependencies. - Synchronize: run
sudo pacman -Syu; do not proceed with an unresolved partial-upgrade problem. - Install officially: run
sudo pacman -S package-nameand allow signature and dependency checks to complete. - Investigate failures: for signature errors, check time, mirrors and the Arch keyring; never disable verification.
- Use the AUR only if necessary: obtain the build files, read every script and source reference, and assess whether the software is worth that additional trust.
- Build and install locally: run
makepkgin a clean directory, then install the reviewed package withsudo pacman -U. - Re-review later: inspect diffs and maintainer or source changes before every AUR rebuild or upgrade.

The essential boundary is the source of the package and the checks applied to it. Official repositories plus a correctly configured pacman give you Arch’s repository signatures and dependency handling. AUR builds can be useful when software is missing, but they require deliberate code review before every build and update.
