Install Android Canary on a spare, backed-up Pixel through Google’s Android Flash Tool, not by treating Canary as a normal over-the-air switch. Canary builds are experimental, can contain breaking changes, and flashing or changing channels can erase the phone. To leave Canary for a beta or public release, back up again, select the destination channel in the official tool, and perform a clean flash that resets the device.
What Android Canary is—and what “safe” means
Android Canary is Google’s earliest public channel for exploring upcoming Android platform changes and pre-release APIs. It is intended for developers and enthusiasts who want to test new behavior before it reaches more mature beta or release channels. Google’s Android Canary documentation says to expect issues and breaking changes and warns that these builds are not the best choice for a primary or only device.
Safety therefore means controlling the consequences, not making Canary behave like stable Android. Use a Pixel whose failure will not interrupt work, travel, banking, authentication, or emergency communications. Keep a stable, separately backed-up phone available if you need dependable daily service. Expect that an app, accessory, cellular feature, battery behavior, or system setting may work differently after the flash.
“The Canary channel lets you explore and test the most up-to-date Android builds with pre-release Android APIs and potential upcoming behavior changes. You should expect issues and breaking changes; these cutting-edge builds won’t be the best choice to use as a primary or only device.” — Android Developers, Android Canary documentation

Canary on a physical Pixel versus the emulator
Google presents both a Pixel route and an Android Emulator route for exploring Canary. The emulator avoids changing the operating system on your personal phone, while a physical Pixel is necessary when you need to test real radios, cameras, sensors, thermals, battery behavior, biometric hardware, USB accessories, or carrier-specific behavior.
| Choice | Device risk | Setup effort | What it can reveal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canary on a Pixel | High: flashing and changing channels can reset the device | Requires a compatible browser, unlocked Pixel, USB Debugging, and a USB data connection | Real hardware, connectivity, sensors, performance, and physical-device behavior |
| Canary in Android Emulator | No operating-system change to your phone | Requires installing and configuring an emulator image on a computer | Many APIs, user-interface changes, and app compatibility scenarios without risking phone data |
If the feature you want to inspect does not require physical hardware, begin with the emulator. Move to a spare Pixel only when the test requires a real device or when you have accepted the reset and recovery work.
Check eligibility before connecting the Pixel
The Canary page does not publish a fixed, Canary-specific list of Pixel models. Instead, use the live device selector in Android Flash Tool and treat its current choices as the authority for your phone and the build you intend to install. Do not assume that a model listed for another Android release channel can run Canary.
For context, Google’s Android 17 factory-image page, accessed on October 13, 2026, lists Pixel 6 series, Pixel 7 series, Pixel Tablet, Pixel Fold, Pixel 8 series, Pixel 9 series, and Pixel 10 series devices for those factory images. That is a separate release page; it is not evidence that every one of those devices is eligible for Canary. Verify your exact model in the live Flash Tool selector immediately before installation.

Record the phone and destination you intend to use
- Open Settings on the Pixel and note the exact model name and storage variant shown under About phone.
- Confirm that the device is the one you are willing to wipe if the process requires it.
- Decide whether you are installing Canary for API exploration, app testing, hardware testing, or general curiosity. The reason determines whether an emulator or spare phone is the better choice.
- Decide what channel you would return to later: a beta channel or a public release. You will need to select that destination explicitly when leaving Canary.
Prepare the Pixel and your computer
Complete this checklist before opening the flash process. Preparation is where most avoidable data-loss and connection problems are prevented.
| Requirement | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Backup | Your important data is copied and can be restored independently of the Pixel | Flashing preview builds and returning to a public build can erase user data |
| Supported browser | A browser with WebUSB support, such as Chrome or Edge 79 or later | Android Flash Tool communicates with the phone through the browser |
| Unlocked device | The Pixel meets the tool’s unlocked-device requirement | The tool cannot complete the supported flash workflow on a device that does not meet its prerequisites |
| USB Debugging | Developer options are enabled and USB Debugging is on | The browser needs permission to communicate with the Pixel |
| USB connection | A known-good USB-C data cable and a direct computer connection | A charging-only cable cannot provide the data path required by the tool |
| Time and power | The computer and Pixel will remain connected and powered through the operation | An interrupted flash can leave the phone unable to boot until the official process is completed again |
Make a backup you can actually restore
Use the backup method you trust, whether that is your Google account, a computer copy, or both. Check the backup rather than assuming that a sync completed. Pay particular attention to photos and videos, downloaded files, messages, contacts, authenticator or passkey access, work profiles, device-specific app data, and anything stored only in local storage. If an app requires a separate export, perform that export before connecting the cable.
Keep recovery information available on another device. After a reset, you may need your Google account credentials, two-factor authentication method, password manager, or recovery codes before you can restore apps and accounts. A backup that exists only on the Pixel you are about to erase is not a backup for this operation.

Enable the required Android settings
On the Pixel, open Settings and use the search field for “Build number” to enable Developer options if they are not already visible. In Developer options, enable USB Debugging. Android may display an authorization prompt when the computer first connects; read the prompt and approve it only for the computer you are using. Keep the Pixel unlocked while establishing the connection.

The exact wording and placement of developer settings can vary slightly by Android build. Do not change unrelated boot or security settings merely because they appear in Developer options. The Flash Tool will identify any additional prerequisite it needs.
Install Android Canary with Android Flash Tool
Google’s supported Pixel route is the Android Flash Tool linked from the Android Canary page. The browser-based tool guides the operation, so you do not need to install a separate flashing utility. Read every device and build confirmation in the tool; do not proceed on an assumption that the selected entry is correct.
- Open the official Canary instructions. In a WebUSB-capable browser such as Chrome or Edge 79 or later, go to Google’s Android Canary page and follow its Android Flash Tool link. Avoid third-party mirrors or unofficial images.
- Connect the prepared Pixel. Attach the USB-C data cable directly to the computer and the Pixel. Unlock the phone, keep USB Debugging enabled, and approve the computer authorization prompt if Android shows one.
- Choose the device in the tool. When the browser asks which device to use, select the exact Pixel you intend to flash. If several phones are attached, disconnect the others so there is no ambiguity.
- Review the Canary build. Confirm that the tool identifies the expected Pixel model and that the selected channel is Android Canary. Stop if the model, channel, or build label is not what you expect. The live selector, not an old compatibility list, is the deciding source.
- Read the reset warning. Treat the operation as destructive even if the tool presents an apparently convenient update path. Verify that your backup is complete before accepting the flash.
- Start the flash and leave the connection alone. Follow the on-screen sequence. Do not remove the cable, close the browser, or let the computer sleep while the tool is writing and verifying the build unless the tool explicitly instructs you to do so.
- Complete first boot. When the tool reports completion, allow the Pixel to restart. The first boot after a system change can take longer than a normal restart. Finish Android’s setup only after the phone reaches the setup or home screen.
- Restore selectively. Restore the data you need, then test the features that motivated the Canary installation. Keep a note of the Canary build and any failures so you can tell whether a later OTA changes the behavior.
What happens after the flash
Flashing a Canary build automatically enrolls that Pixel in Android Canary for Pixel. Google will offer continuous over-the-air updates to the latest Canary builds. That convenience does not make the channel stable: every subsequent Canary update remains pre-release software, so preserve your backup routine and keep the spare-device plan.

Before accepting a later OTA, check that you have enough time to recover if a test build exposes a problem. If the Pixel is needed for an appointment, trip, work shift, or authentication deadline, use the stable phone instead of relying on a Canary update.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to leave Canary and return to beta or stable Android
Leaving Canary is a reinstall onto another channel, not a simple unenrollment toggle. Google’s Canary guidance says to wipe the device and flash a build from the desired beta or release channel with Android Flash Tool or another supported method. Google’s factory-image instructions likewise state that moving between production and preview channels requires a full reset that removes user data.
Choose the destination channel first
Decide whether you want a beta build for continued testing or a public release for maximum stability. Use the live Android Flash Tool for the destination offered to your Pixel, or use the current official Pixel factory-image page for that channel. Do not select an image merely because its marketing name sounds newer; match the image to the exact device model and the channel you want.
Back up Canary data before the reset
Anything created or changed while the Pixel was running Canary must be copied off the phone before you begin. Recheck photos, downloads, messages, work data, authenticator access, and app exports. If you restored a partial backup after installing Canary, do not assume that the same items will be present after the channel change.

- Open Android Flash Tool in a supported WebUSB browser and connect the Pixel with USB Debugging enabled.
- Select the exact Pixel in the device chooser.
- Select the desired beta or public-release build and read the model and channel details carefully.
- Confirm the full-reset warning only after verifying your backup and destination.
- Start the flash and keep the cable and computer connected throughout the operation.
- Let the Pixel boot to setup, then sign in and restore only from the backup you verified before the reset.
If the tool offers more than one destination build, compare the labels in the tool itself and choose the one that matches your intended channel. Do not mix files from different channels or substitute an image for another Pixel model.

What “leave the beta program” means in practice
People often use “beta program” as shorthand for any Android preview channel. Canary, beta, and public release are different levels of pre-release exposure, but the safe exit principle is the same: select the channel you want, wipe the phone, and install that channel’s build. Simply turning off an OTA enrollment option does not convert the already-installed Canary system into stable Android.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The Pixel does not appear in Android Flash Tool
- Confirm that the browser is one with WebUSB support, such as Chrome or Edge 79 or later.
- Unlock the Pixel and check that USB Debugging is still enabled.
- Look for an authorization prompt on the phone and approve it only for the computer you trust.
- Replace a suspect cable with a known-good USB-C data cable and connect directly rather than through an unpowered hub.
- Disconnect other Android devices, reload the tool, and reconnect the Pixel.
If the device still does not appear, stop rather than repeatedly approving unknown prompts or installing unofficial drivers and images. The tool’s on-screen error and prerequisite checks are safer guides than random fixes.
The selected model or channel looks wrong
Cancel before flashing. Recheck the Pixel’s About phone screen and compare it with the model shown by the tool. The Canary page does not guarantee support for every Pixel generation, and the Android 17 factory-image list is not a Canary compatibility list. Use the live selector again instead of forcing an image intended for another device or release channel.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The flash reports an error
Keep the Pixel connected unless the tool tells you to disconnect it. Read the exact error, note the step at which it occurred, and use the tool’s retry or recovery instruction. Do not improvise by downloading a random factory image or interrupting a verification step. If the tool reports that the device is not in the required state, return to the prerequisite checklist: unlocked device, USB Debugging, supported browser, and reliable data connection.
The phone seems stuck during first boot
Allow the initial restart time to complete and watch the tool for its final status. If the tool did not report a completed flash, reconnect only when its instructions permit and rerun the official workflow. Avoid repeated button combinations or unofficial recovery packages unless you have a documented, device-specific reason; they can complicate an already incomplete installation.
Data is missing after returning to beta or stable
A full reset is an expected part of moving from a preview build to a public build. Sign in with the account used for your backup and restore from the verified copy you made before flashing. Files that existed only in local storage and were not copied elsewhere cannot be recovered through the channel-change process itself.
