Install the signed 0patch Agent, register it with a 0patch account, apply every available official Windows update first, and then verify synchronization, licensing, and relevant patches in 0patch Console. The console can be closed after setup; the Agent service continues applying downloaded micropatches. A healthy installation shows a recent server sync (within 0–60 minutes), a non-NONE license status, relevant-patch entries, and a matching computer record in 0patch Central.
What 0patch adds to an unsupported Windows Server
0patch is an additional, in-memory defense layer for vulnerabilities in specific executable and DLL versions. It does not replace Windows servicing, a vendor security fix, a supported operating system, or normal hardening. The Agent receives micropatches from the 0patch Server and applies them to matching processes without replacing the underlying files.
Matching is exact. A micropatch is written for a particular executable or DLL version, often the version delivered by a specific vendor update. That is why installing official updates before judging 0patch coverage is essential: the Agent may have a patch for the updated file but not for an older or different build.
The product page displayed more than 3,000 micropatches delivered and more than 220 vulnerabilities patched when accessed on October 16, 2026. Those totals are cumulative product figures, not a promise that every vulnerability or every server receives a patch.

Check platform, Agent, and support boundaries first
Windows Server versions listed by 0patch
0patch’s current supported-platform list includes Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019, 2016, 2012 R2, 2012, 2008 R2 SP1, 2008, 2003 R2, and 2003 SP2. Older releases have additional update prerequisites. An unlisted version may work, but 0patch says it has not been tested; treat that as an operational risk, not as supported compatibility.
“Supported” has two separate meanings. A platform can be accepted by the service while receiving few or no new micropatches because no applicable vulnerability has been addressed recently. Conversely, a server can show previously downloaded patches even after its Agent is no longer supported. Record the exact Windows edition, service pack or cumulative-update level, and Agent version before deployment so that later troubleshooting distinguishes these cases.
Windows Server 2012 after October 2026
For Windows Server 2012 after October 2026, 0patch says to install all cumulative updates offered for Server 2012 and to maintain enough licenses. This is a prerequisite for the post-end-of-support coverage described by 0patch, which is stated as lasting at least until October 2029 for Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2. Do not interpret that date as a guarantee that every vulnerability will receive a micropatch.
Network and account prerequisites
- Use a local administrator account, or an elevation path that can install an MSI and create or start the Agent service.
- Have a 0patch account email address and password ready for registration.
- Allow the installed Agent to reach the 0patch Server through the server’s firewall, proxy, and egress controls. A successful MSI installation without outbound connectivity still produces an unusable, unsynchronized Agent.
- For production, decide whether the account will use the FREE plan or a PRO/Enterprise subscription before assigning servers. Some relevant patches are visible but require a paid license.
- Keep an inventory of the server’s installed applications. Relevant patches can cover those products as well as Windows, so the list differs from one machine to another.
Install the 0patch Agent interactively
The interactive path is the easiest way to validate one server because it exposes installation errors and lets you register immediately.
- Download the current MSI. Obtain the latest file named
0PatchInstaller_<version>.msifrom 0patch.com. Verify that the installer is digitally signed by ACROS računalniški inženiring d.o.o.; the installed executables are signed by the same company. - Start the installer with elevation. Right-click the MSI or launch it through an elevated administrative installation workflow. Approve the User Account Control prompt and confirm that the publisher signature is intact before continuing.
- Accept the license. Read and accept the license terms presented by the wizard.
- Choose the installation directory. Keep the default unless your server’s software-management policy requires another location. Record any non-default path for later administration.
- Leave “Launch 0patch Console” enabled when registering now. This opens the console as soon as setup completes. You may clear it when deploying through a controlled software-distribution process and register later.
- Finish the installation. Confirm that the wizard completes without rollback or service-start errors. Installation alone does not prove that the Agent is registered or receiving patches.
0patch Console does not have to remain open for patching to work. The Agent service operates in the background and applies downloaded micropatches to matching processes. Use the console for configuration and verification, not as a continuously running desktop application.

Register the Agent and obtain its first micropatches
- Open 0patch Console on the server if it is not already open.
- Enter the email address and password for the 0patch account.
- Complete registration and allow the Agent to connect to the 0patch Server.
- Wait for the Agent to download the metadata and micropatches applicable to this machine, its Windows build, and its installed applications.
- Confirm the account’s subscription is applied. A newly registered computer normally starts on
FREE; a purchased PRO or Enterprise entitlement should appear after the account is recognized.
Registration requires working network connectivity. If the Agent cannot reach the server, it cannot complete registration or download new micropatches, even though the local console and service may appear installed.
Silent deployments have a special timing consideration: 0patch documents a by-design registration delay of up to 60 minutes. Therefore, a newly deployed silent Agent may initially prompt for sign-in or appear unregistered while that delay is still running. Do not remove and reinstall it solely because the first check is early.

Install official Windows updates before evaluating coverage
Run the server’s normal Microsoft update process before deciding whether 0patch covers a vulnerability. Reboot when the update process requires it, then verify the resulting build and cumulative-update level. 0patch micropatches target exact executable and DLL versions; changing those files can change which micropatches are relevant.
For a Windows Server 2012 machine operating after October 2026, install every cumulative update offered for Server 2012 and keep sufficient 0patch licenses, as 0patch specifically requires. Apply the same baseline discipline to other unsupported releases: bring the system to the latest official update level available to it, document anything that cannot be installed, and only then measure 0patch coverage.
Do not uninstall an official update to make a micropatch appear. 0patch describes itself as an additional defense layer, not a replacement for vendor fixes. If an official fix exists and is compatible with the workload, it remains the preferred remediation.

Verify that the Agent is working
Use both the local console and 0patch Central. A single green-looking installation screen is not enough; the checks below distinguish a registered, synchronized Agent from an installed but disconnected one.

Confirm the computer in 0patch Central
- Sign in to 0patch Central with the same account used by the Agent.
- Open COMPUTERS.
- Locate the server and compare its Last Sync time with LAST SERVER SYNC in the local console.
- Investigate any missing computer, stale timestamp, or mismatch before treating the server as protected.
The matching timestamps provide an independent check that the Agent is communicating with the account service rather than merely displaying locally cached information.
Understand the Relevant Patches list
The number of relevant patches is machine-specific. It changes with the Windows build, installed applications, newly issued micropatches, and the account’s subscription. There is no reliable universal count to use as a pass/fail benchmark.
An AVAILABLE entry means the patch is identified as relevant but requires a PRO or Enterprise license. It does not mean that the patch has failed to install. Review the entry’s target product and file version, then decide whether the subscription and operational risk justify enabling it.
A short list is not automatically a defect. A fully updated server may have fewer matching vulnerable files than another server, and 0patch may not have published a micropatch for every issue affecting the platform. Conversely, a long list is not proof that every listed patch is active; confirm the individual status and licensing conditions shown by the console.

Check whether a 0patch PRO or Enterprise trial fits this server before committing a production rollout. Treat a trial as a licensing evaluation, not as evidence that a particular vulnerability is covered indefinitely.
Interactive versus silent or GPO deployment
Interactive deployment
Use the wizard on a pilot server when you need immediate visibility into publisher signature, installation directory, service startup, registration, and first synchronization. It is also the fastest way to establish a known-good reference computer for later automation.
Silent or GPO deployment
Use your organization’s MSI software-distribution or Group Policy process when many servers require the same installation. Keep registration credentials and network policy outside scripts where possible, and plan for the documented registration delay of up to 60 minutes. A silent install that completes with no user interface still needs the same post-deployment checks: console sign-in state, server-sync age, license value, relevant patches, and the computer record in 0patch Central.
Do not mark a deployment successful solely because the MSI exit code is successful. Your rollout record should include the Agent version, target server, installation time, first successful sync, license state, and the person or system that confirmed the Central computer entry.
Troubleshoot common verification failures
The console immediately asks for sign-in
- For an interactive installation, registration may not have been completed. Enter the account credentials and finish the registration flow.
- For a silent installation, check whether less than 60 minutes have passed. The documented registration delay can explain an early prompt.
- Verify that the server can reach the 0patch Server through its firewall or proxy and that the Agent service is running.
LAST SERVER SYNC is older than 60 minutes
- Check whether the server has usable DNS and outbound connectivity.
- Review firewall and proxy rules for the Agent’s traffic; authentication that works in a browser does not prove that the service’s traffic is permitted.
- Confirm the Agent service is running and that the server clock is sensible enough for TLS and account communication.
- Reopen the console after correcting connectivity and allow a new synchronization cycle.
- Compare the refreshed time with the Last Sync value in 0patch Central.
LICENSE shows NONE
NONE points to a connectivity or account-recognition problem. Recheck registration credentials, network access, and the account selected in 0patch Central. Do not interpret NONE as a free license; a healthy free account is displayed as FREE.

No relevant patches appear
- Confirm that official Windows updates were installed before the check.
- Record the exact executable or DLL version and compare it with the target described by any expected micropatch.
- Verify that the Agent has synchronized within the last 60 minutes.
- Check the installed applications inventory; a patch for a product not installed on this server will not be relevant.
- Allow for the possibility that 0patch has not published a micropatch for the vulnerability or build in question.
A patch is marked AVAILABLE
Review the account entitlement. 0patch uses AVAILABLE for relevant patches that require a PRO or Enterprise license. Purchasing or assigning the correct subscription should be an explicit decision based on the server’s risk and the patch’s target, not an assumption that every available entry is mandatory.
When an Agent becomes unsupported
0patch distinguishes Agent support from patch state. When an Agent is no longer supported by the 0patch Server, it stops receiving new micropatches, but micropatches already downloaded continue to apply to matching processes on the computer. This is a degraded, frozen state rather than an immediate removal of existing protection.
Update the Agent to restore delivery of new micropatches. After updating, repeat registration and verification: confirm the console opens without an unexpected sign-in prompt, check a 0–60-minute LAST SERVER SYNC, verify the expected license, inspect RELEVANT PATCHES, and match the computer’s Last Sync in 0patch Central.
Plan Agent updates as part of server maintenance. Test the new Agent on a representative system, record the previous version and rollback procedure used by your software-management process, and check the first synchronization before broad deployment. Existing downloaded patches should not be treated as a substitute for maintaining a supported Agent.
Production rollout checklist
- Baseline: document Windows edition, service pack or cumulative-update level, installed applications, Agent version, and server owner.
- Official updates: install all available vendor updates first; for Server 2012 after October 2026, include all offered cumulative updates and maintain enough licenses.
- Pilot: deploy interactively to a test group before using silent or GPO rollout.
- Network: validate DNS, firewall, proxy, and outbound access from the service context.
- Registration: use the intended 0patch account and wait through the silent-install registration delay when applicable.
- Verification: require a recent LAST SERVER SYNC, a valid license value, relevant-patch entries where expected, and a matching 0patch Central computer record.
- Licensing: decide whether FREE coverage is sufficient or whether PRO/Enterprise access is required for entries marked AVAILABLE.
- Monitoring: periodically review sync age, Agent support status, newly relevant patches, and account licensing.
- Recovery: document how to update an unsupported Agent and how administrators will respond if synchronization stops.
What a successful installation proves—and what it does not
A successful verification proves that this Agent is registered, communicating recently, associated with an account, and able to identify patches relevant to the server’s current files and applications. It does not prove that every vulnerability is patched, that every listed patch is enabled, or that the operating system has become supported by its vendor.
Use the exact RELEVANT PATCHES list as the authoritative machine-level view. Recheck it after official updates, application changes, Agent updates, and newly issued micropatches because all of those events can change the applicable set.
