If by “Googlebook” you mean a Chromebook, you can install an eligible website as a web app directly from Chrome. Open the site, choose More (three dots) > Cast, save, and share > Install page as app, then follow the prompts. When the site supports it, an Install icon also appears in the address bar.

The installed app appears in the Chromebook Launcher. If Chrome does not offer an install option, create a website shortcut instead. Chrome Web Store apps and Android apps use separate installation paths, so choosing the right method matters.

What a web app is on a Chromebook

A web app is a website packaged so it can be opened from your Chromebook’s Launcher like an application. Google describes it as “an app built for the web that you can access on any device.” The app still depends on the site’s web technology, but it may provide a more app-like window and entry point than a normal browser bookmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Depending on how the site was built, a web app may offer offline storage, notifications, file-system access, or badges on its icon. These capabilities are optional: installing a site does not guarantee that every feature works offline or that the app supports every device integration. The site’s own design determines what is available.

This guide uses “Chromebook” for the device sometimes called “Googlebook.” The procedure applies to ChromeOS; menu wording can change slightly as Chrome updates.

Before you install anything

  • Use a Chromebook with Chrome available and an internet connection for the initial visit.
  • Open the exact website you want to install. The install command is offered per site, not as a universal command for every page.
  • Be ready to review the app’s requested name, icon, permissions, and sign-in requirements.
  • If the Chromebook belongs to a school or employer, administrators may limit app installation or access to Google Play.

It helps to decide what you actually need before choosing a route. If you only want a quick Launcher entry, a shortcut may be enough. If you want an app window and any extra capabilities the site supplies, look for the web-app installation command. If the service has a separately published Chrome or Android package, its store listing may be the better choice, but those packages are not interchangeable with a website install.

Install a website as a web app

Use Chrome’s menu

  1. Open Chrome from the Chromebook Launcher.
  2. Go to the website you want to use as an app.
  3. Select More (the three-dot menu) in the upper-right corner.
  4. Choose Cast, save, and share, then select Install page as app.
  5. Read the on-screen prompt. Confirm the name or other details and finish the installation.

Google documents this route in Use web apps. If the command is missing, that site has not exposed an installable web-app option to Chrome, or your Chrome version is using slightly different labels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the page that represents the service itself rather than an embedded frame, a temporary checkout page, or a one-time link. The command is determined by the site and page you are visiting. A service can therefore offer installation from its main experience while a particular sign-in or payment page does not.

Use the address-bar Install icon

Some eligible sites show an Install icon at the right side of Chrome’s address bar. Select that icon and follow the same confirmation steps. The icon is site-dependent, so its absence does not indicate a Chromebook fault.

Check both locations once the page has fully loaded: the address-bar icon and More > Cast, save, and share. Chrome updates can move or rename menu labels, but the site still has to support installation. Reinstalling Chrome will not make an unsupported site become an installable web app.

Confirm the installation

Open the Chromebook Launcher and search for the site’s app name. Select it to launch the app. Some web apps expose extra actions—such as a particular tool or task—when you right-click their Launcher icon. Those shortcuts are supplied by the app and will not appear for every site.

Search for the name shown in the confirmation dialog, which may be a product name rather than the full web address. If the entry opens a normal browser tab, check whether you created a shortcut instead of completing the web-app prompt. A shortcut and an installed web app can both appear in the Launcher, but their capabilities are not the same.

What to expect after installation

App-like access without a separate download

The installed entry gives you a direct way to open the website from the Launcher. It does not turn the site into a native ChromeOS program, and it does not automatically remove the site’s need for an internet connection.

Your account, content, and service features remain controlled by the website. The first launch may require you to sign in, accept the service’s own terms, or grant browser permissions. Installing the entry does not create a new account or transfer data from another app.

Offline behavior varies

A web app can support offline storage or offline work, but that behavior is not guaranteed to be complete. A site may let you view cached information while offline yet require a connection for sign-in, synchronization, uploads, or newly requested data. Treat offline support as a feature of the individual service, not a promise made by the installation process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an important task, test the service while connected before relying on it without a network. Check whether the functions you need—such as opening saved material, editing, submitting, or syncing—actually work offline. Reconnect before expecting current account information or newly uploaded files to appear everywhere.

Notifications, files, and badges

Some web apps request permission to send notifications, read or save files, or display a badge on their icon. Approve only permissions that match how you intend to use the service. If a site never implements one of these capabilities, installing it will not add the capability.

A permission prompt is separate from the installation itself. Read what the site is asking for and consider whether the request fits the service. A notification permission may be useful for messages, while file access may matter only for a service that imports or exports documents. You can decline a request when you do not need the feature, although the related function may then be unavailable.

When “Install page as app” is not available

Create a website shortcut

If the site does not offer an installable web app, Chrome can still place a shortcut in your Launcher or app list:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the website in Chrome.
  2. Select More (three dots).
  3. Choose More tools > Create shortcut.
  4. Enter or confirm the shortcut name, then complete the prompt.

A shortcut is a saved link to the site. It is useful when you want one-click access, but it should not be presented as equivalent to a site that supplies a full installable web app. The app-like capabilities described above depend on the site’s implementation. See Google’s Install & manage web apps guidance for the distinction. Chrome’s exact labels may change with updates.

Use a shortcut when the goal is convenience rather than extra functionality. It can be a sensible choice for a service you visit occasionally, a site that has not implemented web-app installation, or a page that your administrator allows in the browser but does not allow as a separate store app.

Check the page, not just the home screen

The install option can appear on one site or account experience and not another. Navigate to the service’s main page, wait for it to finish loading, and check both the three-dot menu and the address bar. If neither offers installation, use a shortcut rather than repeatedly reinstalling Chrome.

Also check whether you are viewing a redirect, embedded service, or temporary session. Return to the service’s ordinary web address and try again. If the option remains absent, the limitation is usually the site’s support rather than a missing Chromebook component.

Chrome Web Store apps: a different route

A Chrome Web Store app is distributed through Google’s store rather than installed from an arbitrary website. To use this route:

  • Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam
  • Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Silver
  1. Open the Chrome Web Store on the Chromebook.
  2. Search or browse for the app.
  3. Open its listing and select Add to Chrome.
  4. Review the permissions and finish the prompts.

A developer may also provide an Add to Chrome button on its own site that leads into the same installation flow. Review the listing and requested permissions before accepting.

Chrome Web Store apps are supported on Chromebooks. Google’s documentation notes that these Chrome apps stopped working on Windows, Mac, and Linux after December 2022; that limitation does not make a Web Store app the same thing as installing any website as a web app. Store availability, permissions, and maintenance are controlled by the app developer. Details are in Add & open Chrome apps.

Do not search the Web Store simply because a website lacks an install icon. First determine whether the developer actually publishes a store app. A normal website can be installable as a web app without having a Web Store listing, and a Web Store listing can represent a different product or installation model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android apps: install only through Google Play

Android apps are another category. On a Chromebook that supports Android, install them through the Google Play Store rather than Chrome’s web-app menu:

  1. Open the Google Play Store from the Launcher.
  2. Search for the Android app.
  3. Select Install and complete any requested prompts.
  4. Open the app from the Launcher after installation.

Not every Chromebook supports Android apps, and a school or workplace administrator may disable Play Store access. If the Play Store is missing or blocked, the restriction is on the device or account; a web-app installation cannot bypass it. Google’s requirements and setup steps are listed in Install and use Android apps on your Chromebook.

Choose Android when the service’s Android application is specifically what you need and the Chromebook supports it. Otherwise, compare the browser-based web app and shortcut first. An Android package may have different features, permissions, sign-in behavior, and offline support from the service’s website.

Choose the right installation method

Route Where you start What you get Use it when
Installable web app The website in Chrome; Install page as app or address-bar Install A Launcher entry and any app-like features the site implements The website offers installation and you want direct, app-style access
Website shortcut Chrome > More > More tools > Create shortcut A saved link to the site You need quick access but the site has no installable web app
Chrome Web Store app Chrome Web Store listing > Add to Chrome An app distributed through Google’s store The developer publishes a Chromebook-supported Chrome app
Android app Google Play Store > Install An Android package running on supported ChromeOS devices The Chromebook supports Play Store and the service’s Android app is preferred

For a managed Chromebook, add one more question: is the required store or installation action allowed by the administrator? A blocked Play Store, Web Store, or app permission may require the school or employer’s help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The key distinction is the starting point. A web app starts at the service’s website, a shortcut starts at Chrome’s tools, a Chrome app starts at the Web Store, and an Android app starts at Google Play. These routes can produce similarly named Launcher entries, so identify the route before troubleshooting a missing feature.

Launch and use an installed web app

Open it from the Launcher

  1. Open the Chromebook Launcher.
  2. Search by the app’s installed name, or browse the app list.
  3. Select the icon to open the web app.

If you cannot find it, confirm that you completed the final installation prompt rather than only creating a browser tab. Search using the name shown in the installation dialog; a site may use a shorter product name than its web address.

On first launch, allow the page time to load and sign in if required. The app uses the service’s web account, so an existing account normally remains the account you use inside the app. A fresh install does not necessarily mean fresh service data.

Use app-specific shortcuts

Right-click the app icon in the Launcher. If the developer supplied shortcuts, they appear in the context menu and can open a particular feature directly. No context-menu shortcuts means the app has not provided any; it is not an installation error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle sign-in and permissions

Web apps use the website’s account system. You may need to sign in the first time, and deleting the site’s stored data can require another sign-in later. Grant notification, file, or other permissions only when you understand why the service needs them.

If several people use the Chromebook, confirm which account is active before assuming that content is missing. The app opens the same service, but the visible data depends on the account and the site’s session. When troubleshooting, verify the web address and account before removing the app.

Rename, icon changes, and trust checks

Chrome may notify you when an installed web app requests a new name or icon. Review the proposed change before accepting it. You can accept the change, ignore it, or uninstall the app. If the new identity appears designed to imitate another app, Google advises uninstalling it rather than approving the change. An unexpected icon or name is a reason to verify the site’s address and your account before proceeding.

A legitimate service may change branding, but you do not have to accept a change immediately. Compare the requested identity with the site you intended to install. When the request is confusing or looks like impersonation, choose the safer option of declining it or uninstalling the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Uninstall a web app and remove its data

  1. Open the Chromebook Launcher.
  2. Find the installed web app.
  3. Right-click its icon.
  4. Select Uninstall and confirm.

Google also allows you to delete the app’s associated browsing data when removing it. Clearing that data can sign you out, so save any information you need and make sure you know your login details before confirming. The removal process is covered in Google’s Recommended Chromebook apps guidance.

Uninstalling removes the installed entry; it does not cancel an account or subscription held by the website. Handle those separately through the service if necessary. If you only want to stop using the Launcher entry while keeping browser data, read the confirmation carefully and avoid selecting the option that deletes associated data.

Fix the most common installation problems

There is no Install option

  • Check the address-bar icon and the More > Cast, save, and share menu.
  • Make sure you are on the service’s main web page, not a temporary login, checkout, or embedded page.
  • If neither location offers installation, create a shortcut. The site may simply not provide a web app.

The app is missing from the Launcher

  • Search for the exact name shown in the installation prompt.
  • Repeat the installation and complete every confirmation screen.
  • Distinguish a shortcut from an installed web app when checking the Launcher; their behavior is not identical.

The app works online but not offline

That may be normal. Offline storage and workflows are optional and can be partial. Reconnect for actions that need current account data, uploads, synchronization, or authentication.

The Play Store or a store app is unavailable

Verify that the Chromebook model supports Android apps and that a school or employer has not restricted Play Store access. Use the website’s web-app or shortcut route when appropriate; do not treat a blocked Android installation as a Chrome web-app failure.

A name or icon change looks suspicious

A permission prompt is unexpected

Pause and read the request instead of accepting automatically. Installation does not require you to approve every optional capability. Grant access only when it matches the feature you intend to use, and remember that declining a permission can disable that feature without preventing ordinary website access.

Which route should you use?

Start with the website itself: use Install page as app when Chrome offers it. If the option is absent and you only need a Launcher entry, create a shortcut. Choose the Chrome Web Store when the developer distributes a Chromebook-supported Chrome app, and choose Google Play only for a supported Chromebook and an Android app. Managed-device restrictions can override all of these choices.

In short, installation is site-dependent, while launching and removing are handled from the Chromebook Launcher. Web apps can add useful capabilities, but the service controls which ones work, especially offline. Keep the route clear, review permissions and identity changes, and remove associated data only when you are prepared to sign in again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I see “Install page as app” on my Chromebook?

The website may not provide an installable web app, or you may be on a temporary, embedded, or redirected page. Check the site’s main page, the address-bar Install icon, and More > Cast, save, and share. If neither location offers installation, create a shortcut with More > More tools > Create shortcut.

Is a website shortcut the same as a web app?

No. A shortcut is a saved link that gives quick access to the site. An installable web app can provide an app-like entry and optional capabilities such as notifications, offline storage, file access, or icon badges. Those capabilities depend on the site and are not guaranteed.

Where do I find a web app after installing it?

Open the Chromebook Launcher and search for the name shown in the installation prompt. Select the icon to launch it. Right-clicking the icon may reveal feature shortcuts if the developer supplied them.

Will a Chromebook web app work without internet?

Only if the website supports offline behavior, and support may be partial. Cached viewing may work while sign-in, synchronization, uploads, or newly requested data still require a connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I install a Chrome Web Store app?

Open the Chrome Web Store, search or browse for the listing, select Add to Chrome, review permissions, and complete the prompts. This is a separate route from installing an arbitrary website as a web app.

Can I install Android apps on every Chromebook?

No. Android apps require a Chromebook that supports Google Play, and a school or workplace administrator may restrict Play Store access. Install Android apps through Google Play, not through Chrome’s web-app menu.

How do I uninstall a Chromebook web app?

Open the Launcher, right-click the app, choose Uninstall, and confirm. Google may also offer to remove associated browsing data. Removing that data can sign you out, so keep your login details available.

What should I do if a web app changes its name or icon?

Review the requested change before accepting it. You can accept it, ignore it, or uninstall the app. If the new identity appears to imitate another app, uninstall it and verify the site’s address.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does installing a web app create a separate account?

No. The web app uses the website’s account system. You may need to sign in on first launch, and deleting stored website data can require you to sign in again later.

The Bottom Line

On a Chromebook, install a supported website with Chrome’s Install page as app command or the address-bar Install icon. Use a shortcut when no web-app option exists, and keep Chrome Web Store and Android installations as separate routes. Check permissions, offline limits, administrator restrictions, and unexpected name or icon changes before relying on the app.
