Install Varnish Cache as the HTTP reverse proxy in front of your web server, point its backend at the local origin, and make the proxy the only public listener. On Debian or Ubuntu, install from the current signed Varnish repository, configure the systemd unit to listen on the address and port you want (port 80 is the usual reverse-proxy example), set a storage size that fits your VPS, and edit /etc/varnish/default.vcl with the real origin address. Then reload systemd, restart Varnish, and verify cache responses with curl.
The example values in this guide—listener 6081, public port 80, backend 127.0.0.1:8080, and malloc,2g storage—are configuration examples, not performance guarantees. Replace them with values that match your distribution, web server, application, available memory, and security model.
What Varnish does on a VPS
Varnish is an HTTP accelerator that sits between clients and an origin server such as Nginx, Apache, or an application process. A request reaches Varnish first. If a fresh object is in its cache, Varnish returns it without contacting the origin. If the object is absent or must not be cached, Varnish forwards the request, receives the response, and may store that response for later requests.
This arrangement can reduce repeated work for cacheable, mostly public pages and assets, but it does not automatically make every site faster. Personalized pages, logged-in sessions, rapidly changing data, and responses that prohibit caching should normally bypass the cache. Correctness and origin protection matter more than blindly caching a high percentage of traffic.

Typical request path
- DNS points the site name to the VPS.
- The public firewall allows HTTP (and HTTPS if TLS terminates on this host).
- Varnish accepts the request on its listener.
- Varnish evaluates
vcl_recvand either serves a cached object, passes the request, or looks up the configured backend. - The backend web server or application responds.
- Varnish applies response rules in
vcl_backend_responseand returns the result to the client.
Keep the origin bound to a private address or a firewall-restricted port whenever possible. If clients can reach the origin directly, they can bypass cache policy and potentially expose administrative endpoints.
Before you install
Confirm the operating system and package source
Identify whether the VPS runs Debian, Ubuntu, or a Red Hat Enterprise Linux-compatible distribution. Use the current installation instructions for that family from the official Varnish documentation. Repository URLs, signing-key procedures, supported releases, and package versions change; do not copy an old repository line from an unrelated tutorial.
Recommended Free Tools
Varnish Software advises using Varnish Cache 6.0 LTS as a stable, supported version. Check the currently supported LTS release and repository instructions before installing, especially on a newly released operating-system version.
Record the origin endpoint
Determine exactly where the existing site listens. The packaged sample VCL points to 127.0.0.1 on port 8080; that works only when your origin actually accepts HTTP there. Record the real host and port for Nginx, Apache, a container, or another application. Also decide where TLS terminates. Varnish commonly handles plain HTTP while a separate TLS terminator forwards decrypted traffic to it, but your deployment may use a different arrangement.
Check memory and firewall policy
- Leave enough RAM for the operating system, the origin server, databases, and monitoring. Cache storage is not free memory for the rest of the stack.
- Choose one public HTTP listener and prevent direct Internet access to the origin port unless you deliberately need it.
- Plan how administrators will invalidate objects. PURGE is an administrative operation and must not be open to arbitrary clients.
- Take a copy of the existing service and VCL configuration before changing a production VPS.
Install Varnish on Debian or Ubuntu
Register the signed repository
Use the current Debian/Ubuntu repository procedure in the official Varnish installation index. It includes installing the repository signing key, adding the repository for your distribution release, and refreshing APT metadata. The signing step is important: it lets APT verify that packages came from the configured Varnish source.
After the repository is configured, update package metadata and install the package:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install varnish
If APT reports an unsupported release, an invalid signature, or a missing repository, stop and correct the distribution/repository pairing rather than forcing installation from an untrusted package. A package supplied by the distribution may be older than the supported LTS package; decide deliberately whether vendor integration or a newer official package is more important for your VPS.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux-compatible systems
For RHEL-compatible distributions, follow the matching official repository path instead of applying Debian commands. The correct repository, package-manager command, signing-key setup, and service defaults depend on the exact distribution and major release. Confirm that the resulting package provides the varnish systemd service before proceeding.

Understand the systemd service
On Debian and Ubuntu, the packaged unit is commonly located at /lib/systemd/system/varnish.service. Treat that file as vendor-provided. Put persistent changes in a systemd override under /etc/systemd/system/varnish.service.d/, or use the full-unit editor:
sudo systemctl edit --full varnish
The full editor creates a local copy that you can maintain. A drop-in override is preferable when you need to change only selected directives, because package updates can replace the vendor unit while leaving your override visible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSet the listener and storage
Inspect the unit’s ExecStart command. The conservative example listener is port 6081. For a normal reverse-proxy deployment, change the address/port argument to listen on port 80, provided no other process already owns that port. Keep the remaining arguments supplied by the packaged unit unless you understand why they need changing.
The documented storage example is -s malloc,2g. It allocates an in-memory cache with a two-gibibyte limit. Select a value appropriate for your VPS and leave headroom for the OS and origin; a 2 GB cache on a small machine can cause swapping or out-of-memory failures. Storage size controls the cache allocation, not a guaranteed hit rate.
After editing a unit, reload systemd’s configuration:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
Do not start the service until the listener, VCL path, and storage arguments are internally consistent. If another daemon already listens on port 80, either move that daemon behind Varnish or choose a different Varnish listener and arrange the forwarding explicitly.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Configure default.vcl
The main VCL file is normally /etc/varnish/default.vcl. A minimal backend declaration looks like this; replace the host and port with your origin values:
vcl 4.1;
backend default {
.host = "127.0.0.1";
.port = "8080";
}
Varnish resolves a backend hostname when VCL is compiled. If a DNS record changes, reload or restart Varnish so the new address is resolved; changing DNS alone does not update an already loaded VCL.

Decide what should bypass cache
Cache policy belongs in VCL. Common bypass signals include an authenticated session cookie, an authorization header, a request method that changes data, or an administrative path. The following pattern illustrates the decisions; adapt cookie names and paths to your application rather than copying them as universal rules:
sub vcl_recv {
if (req.method != "GET" && req.method != "HEAD") {
return (pass);
}
if (req.http.Authorization) {
return (pass);
}
if (req.http.Cookie ~ "session|logged_in|auth") {
return (pass);
}
if (req.url ~ "^/(admin|login|checkout)(/|$)") {
return (pass);
}
}
pass sends the request to the backend without looking up or storing a cached object. It is different from refusing the request: the origin still receives it and the client still receives the origin response.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Respect response cache controls
Review the origin’s Cache-Control, Set-Cookie, and Vary headers. A response carrying user-specific cookies or explicit private/no-cache directives should generally not be stored for other visitors. If you override those headers in VCL, document why and test every affected URL; an incorrect override can leak personalized content.
Cache lifetime is a freshness decision. Longer lifetimes increase the chance of a hit but keep old content available longer. Shorter lifetimes reduce staleness but send more requests to the origin. Set policy by content type: static assets with versioned filenames can normally live longer than an article page or API response.
Start, enable, and verify the service
Apply the configuration
- Validate that the VCL file is readable and that the backend host/port are correct.
- Reload systemd after any unit change:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable Varnish at boot:
sudo systemctl enable varnish. - Restart it to load the new unit and VCL:
sudo systemctl restart varnish. - Check the result:
sudo systemctl status varnish.
If the restart fails, inspect the service journal immediately:
sudo journalctl -u varnish --no-pager -n 100
A syntax error in VCL, an unavailable backend, a duplicate listener, or an invalid command-line argument will usually appear there. Fix the first reported error, run the restart again, and do not repeatedly restart a failing production service without reading the log.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Test from the VPS and from a client
Request the public URL with headers visible:
curl -I http://your-site.example/
Repeat the request. Depending on your VCL and response headers, the response headers or Varnish logging should show whether the object was a hit, miss, pass, or fetch. A first request commonly fetches from the origin; a later request can be served from cache only if the response is cacheable and still fresh.
Test a known dynamic or logged-in path separately. It should follow your pass rule and must not expose one user’s response to another user. Test a URL that sets a cookie, a non-GET method, and an administrative path before declaring the configuration safe.

Put Nginx or Apache behind Varnish
Varnish must own the public HTTP port, while the origin listens on a private or firewall-restricted port. If Nginx or Apache currently binds to port 80, move its HTTP listener to the backend port selected in default.vcl (the sample uses 8080), then restart that origin service and confirm it responds locally before restarting Varnish.
- Change the origin’s listen directive to the chosen private port or address.
- Restart the origin and verify it locally with a request to that address and port.
- Change VCL’s
.hostand.portto exactly match the origin. - Configure Varnish to listen on the public port.
- Restart Varnish and test through the public hostname.
- Use firewall rules to block unsolicited Internet traffic to the origin port.
Preserve the original host header and client-information requirements of your application. If the origin needs the external hostname to select a virtual host, ensure VCL does not replace it unintentionally. If your application generates absolute URLs or redirects, verify that it knows the original scheme and host when TLS terminates before Varnish.
Invalidate cached objects safely
Why PURGE needs protection
A PURGE removes a cached object before its normal lifetime expires. It is useful after publishing corrected content, changing a deployment, or removing sensitive data, but an unrestricted PURGE endpoint lets anyone evict objects and create an avoidable origin load. Varnish security guidance strongly recommends restricting administrative requests such as PURGE to trusted IP addresses or networks with VCL ACLs.
Use an ACL and a method check
Define the administrator network and permit PURGE only from it:
vcl 4.1;
acl purge {
"127.0.0.1";
"192.0.2.10";
}
backend default {
.host = "127.0.0.1";
.port = "8080";
}
sub vcl_recv {
if (req.method == "PURGE") {
if (!client.ip ~ purge) {
return (synth(403, "Not allowed"));
}
return (purge);
}
}
Replace the example address with the actual trusted management address or network. Do not add broad ranges merely to make a test work. Keep the purge endpoint off the public Internet and require the expected host and authentication controls in your management path.
Send a purge request
From an allowed administrator address, purge the exact URL:
curl -X PURGE http://your-site.example/path/to/object
Then request the URL again and confirm that the next response reflects the origin’s current content. For a deployment-wide change, purge deliberately in batches or use an application-aware invalidation strategy; evicting an entire large cache can produce a sudden origin surge.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Operate and tune the cache
Measure before changing policy
Observe hit/miss/pass behavior, backend errors, response age, and memory pressure. Do not claim a speed-up or hit percentage without a benchmark from your own traffic and workload. A high hit ratio is not useful if stale or personalized content is served incorrectly, and a low ratio may be expected for a mostly dynamic site.

Choose storage conservatively
Increase malloc storage only when the VPS has unused memory and the working set justifies it. Leave room for the origin, database, kernel buffers, logs, and deployment tools. If the host swaps, reduce the cache allocation or move to a larger VPS before tuning VCL for more objects.
Plan reloads and deployments
VCL changes require a reload or restart to take effect. Because backend hostnames are resolved during VCL compilation, reload after DNS changes as well. Schedule disruptive restarts during a maintenance window when possible, and verify service status and a representative public request after every deployment.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Varnish will not start
- Check
journalctl -u varnishfor VCL syntax errors or an invalid startup argument. - Confirm the VCL path exists and is readable by the service.
- Check whether another process already owns the configured listener.
- After editing the unit, run
systemctl daemon-reloadbefore restarting.
502 or backend connection errors
- Verify that the origin is running and listening on the exact host and port in
default.vcl. - Test the origin locally, then inspect its own access and error logs.
- Check local firewall rules and container networking if the origin is not on the host network.
- Remember that a hostname in VCL is resolved when VCL is compiled; reload after DNS changes.
Every request is a miss or pass
- Inspect response headers for
Set-Cookie, private/no-cache directives, or a short freshness lifetime. - Review bypass conditions for cookies, authorization headers, methods, and URL paths.
- Confirm that you are testing the same host and scheme that production clients use.
- Do not remove safety bypasses simply to increase a metric; determine why the response is not cacheable first.
Users see stale or wrong content
- Shorten freshness for rapidly changing content or purge the affected URL after publication.
- Ensure personalized responses pass and are not stored for anonymous users.
- Check
Varybehavior when content differs by encoding, device, or other request headers. - Review any VCL rule that overrides origin cache headers.
The origin is still reachable directly
Restrict the backend port with the VPS firewall and bind the origin to localhost or a private interface when the architecture permits. Re-test from an external network; local success alone does not prove that the public path is protected.
Distribution and deployment choices
There is no universally best package path. Choose using these criteria:
| Decision factor | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Package freshness | Whether the distribution package supplies the Varnish release you require, or whether the current official repository is needed. |
| Vendor support | Which source receives security updates and is supported for your operating-system release. |
| Repository trust | That the repository signing key and package metadata are configured using the current official instructions. |
| systemd defaults | The unit location, startup arguments, listener, VCL path, and storage defaults shipped for your distribution. |
| Compatibility | That the package supports your VPS kernel, architecture, OS release, and existing web-server layout. |
Docker and Kubernetes deployments use different installation and lifecycle instructions from a traditional systemd-managed VPS. Do not mix container guidance with the host-package procedure described here.

Security checklist
- Install packages from a current, signed source appropriate to the OS.
- Keep Varnish, the origin, and the operating system updated according to their support policies.
- Expose only the intended public listener.
- Block direct external access to the backend port.
- Use ACLs to restrict PURGE and any other administrative method.
- Bypass authentication, session, checkout, and other personalized traffic unless you have explicitly designed a safe cache policy.
- Review cache headers and VCL after application changes.
- Monitor logs, backend failures, memory use, and unexpected purge activity.
- Keep a tested recovery copy of the last known-good unit and VCL.
When Varnish is the right choice
Varnish is a strong fit when one VPS serves substantial public, repeatable HTTP content and you can clearly separate cacheable responses from personalized or mutating requests. It is less useful when nearly every response is private, short-lived, or generated uniquely for one user. In that case, improving the application, database, origin capacity, or connection handling may produce more value than adding a cache layer.
Install it incrementally: place one low-risk public path behind Varnish, verify headers and invalidation, then expand the policy. This approach gives you a rollback point and exposes origin, firewall, and application assumptions before they affect the entire site.
