Ubuntu does not provide a built-in shell command that turns microphone audio into terminal text. The practical solutions are speech-recognition tools that inject recognized words into whichever application currently has focus. Click the terminal prompt first, then use either the command-line-oriented vosk-cli-dictation workflow or the tray-based Vocalinux desktop app.
This guide covers installation, models, languages, Wayland and X11 keyboard integration, safe command entry, and recovery when text does not appear.
What terminal voice dictation actually does
Both routes described here listen through your microphone, convert speech to text locally or through a configured engine, and type the result into the focused window. They are not Ubuntu shell built-ins, and they do not replace the shell parser. If the terminal has focus, the recognized text appears at the prompt or inside a terminal editor; if another application has focus, that application receives the text instead.

Before saying a command, click inside the terminal input area and verify that the cursor is visible. Dictated text is ordinary keyboard input, so review it before pressing Enter. A misheard option, path, or punctuation mark can execute a different command from the one you intended.

There is no controlled accuracy comparison between the two projects in the available documentation. Microphone quality, language model, background noise, desktop session, and trigger mode all affect the result.
Prepare Ubuntu and your microphone
Check the operating system
The documented package route targets Debian 12 or compatible derivatives, including Ubuntu 24.04 and later. Vocalinux lists Ubuntu 24.04+ or an Ubuntu-based distribution, Python 3.11+, curl, and a working microphone. The Vocalinux guide identifies Ubuntu 24.04 GNOME under both Wayland and X11 as tested environments, along with Kubuntu and Linux Mint derivatives.
Check audio input before installing
Connect or enable the microphone you intend to use and confirm that Ubuntu sees it in the desktop sound settings. A headset microphone can reduce speaker feedback, while a generic USB microphone is an optional purchase only if the computer has no usable input device. Neither project requires a particular brand or model.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Expect a first-run download
Local recognition is possible after the required bindings and speech model have been downloaded, but neither route is guaranteed to be completely offline during installation. Plan for network access on the first run, then test again with the network disconnected if offline operation is important to you.
Route A: install vosk-cli-dictation from the Debian package
Download the current package
The project publishes a Debian package for supported distributions. The downloads page identified version 0.5.4-beta at the time covered by this guide. Package filenames and versions can change, so open the project’s current downloads page and copy the exact filename shown there instead of assuming that an older filename still exists.
After downloading the file, install it from the directory containing the package:
sudo apt install ./vosk-cli-dictation_0.5.4~beta_all.deb
The local-file form of apt install resolves dependencies while installing the package. If your downloaded filename differs, replace only the filename in the command with the current one.

What the first run does
The package places the vosk-cli-dictation command on your path. On first run, the project says it creates a private Python environment and downloads the Vosk Python bindings. The acoustic model is separate; it is not embedded in the Debian package.
For the small English model, run:
vosk-cli-dictation --download-model en
The project also documents obtaining models from the Vosk model collection and placing them in its documented model directory. Use the model and directory instructions shipped with the current release if you need another language or a different model size.
Select a language
The documented language options include English, French, German, and Spanish. Select the language with --lang, for example:
vosk-cli-dictation --lang fr
The matching acoustic model must already be installed. Selecting a language without its model leaves the recognizer unable to transcribe correctly, so install the model first and then start the program with the corresponding option.

Dictate into a terminal window
Basic sequence
- Open the terminal and click the prompt or the terminal editor area so it has focus.
- Start
vosk-cli-dictationfrom a terminal command or your desktop launcher. - Say the English control phrase start dictation, or use the configured trigger control.
- Speak the text you want inserted. The recognizer types it into the focused window.
- Say stop dictation when you are finished, or use the finalize control described below.
- Read the complete line, correcting names, paths, options, punctuation, and spacing before executing anything.
The start and stop phrases listed above are the documented English voice controls. Other languages have their own documented command words for controls, punctuation, and newlines.
Dictating a command safely
Use dictation to compose a command, not to bypass your normal review step. For example, you might dictate a package-management command or a multiline script into a terminal editor, then inspect every token. Shell metacharacters, hyphens, underscores, directory names, and version numbers are common recognition failure points. If a command changes files, deletes data, or uses elevated privileges, type the sensitive portions manually or paste them from a trusted source.
Punctuation and newlines
The project documents spoken command words for punctuation and line breaks. The exact words depend on the selected language. Consult the command list for that language rather than assuming that saying a punctuation mark’s everyday name will produce the desired character. If punctuation is inserted unexpectedly, confirm both the language and the trigger mode, then dictate shorter phrases and inspect the result before continuing.

Controls, trigger modes, and diagnostics
Manual controls
The documented controls are:
vosk-cli-dictation --toggle
vosk-cli-dictation --finalize
vosk-cli-dictation --sleep-toggle
vosk-cli-dictation --diagnose
--togglestarts or pauses dictation.--finalizestops the current recognition action and copies the accumulated text.--sleep-togglereleases or resumes the microphone without fully closing the session.--diagnosereports the session type, injection backend, audio device, and model status.
The default trigger mode is toggle. The project also documents push-to-talk and a mode that stops after a configured silence timeout. Push-to-talk is useful when you want the microphone active only while a key is held; silence finalization is useful for short phrases but can interrupt speakers who pause between words.
Wayland shortcut setup
Wayland does not generally allow an application to register unrestricted global key capture in the same way as an X11 desktop. The project’s documented approach is to bind its subcommands through the desktop environment’s own keyboard-shortcut settings. Create shortcuts for the command you want to invoke, such as the toggle or finalize action, using your desktop’s Settings application.
The project describes the Wayland injection arrangement as wtype plus wl-clipboard. If a shortcut appears to run but no text is inserted, run the diagnostic command and verify the selected backend, audio device, and model status.
X11 and fallback injection
Under X11, the documented arrangement uses xdotool and xclip. ydotool is available as a fallback, but it can require its daemon and membership in the input group. Those requirements are desktop-session and system-configuration details, not signs that speech recognition itself is failing. Diagnose the active session and backend before changing permissions.
Source installation for development or unsupported packaging
The native package is the simplest path for a supported Ubuntu release. Use the source route when you are developing the project, need to inspect its code, or are running a distribution for which the package is not available.
- Clone or otherwise obtain the project source, then change into its directory.
- Create and activate a Python virtual environment with
python3 -m venv .venvandsource .venv/bin/activate. - Install the Python dependencies with
pip install -r requirements.txt. - Install the system packages required by the guide, including
portaudio19-dev,gettext, and the injection backend appropriate to your session. - Start the application with
python3 src/main.py.
This route does not remove the need for a compatible Vosk model, audio input, and working text-injection backend. Keep the virtual environment active whenever you run the source checkout.
Route B: install Vocalinux for desktop-wide dictation
Run the interactive installer
Vocalinux is a desktop application rather than a terminal-only command. Its Ubuntu guide lists Ubuntu 24.04+, Python 3.11+, a working microphone, and curl as prerequisites. The interactive installer command is:
Rank #4
- 360 Degree Position Adjustable Gooseneck Design --Plug and play USB microphone Pick up the sound from 360-degree with high sensitivity, in the best possible location for sound to your PC gaming, dragon voice dictation, and talk to Cortana
- Mute Button & LED Indicator --One-click to mute/unmute your microphone for pc, Build-in LED indicator tells you the working status at any time
- Intelligent Noise-Canceling Tech --Premium omnidirectional condenser microphone with noise-canceling technology can pick up your clear voice and reduce background noise and echo
- USB Plug&Play(1.8/6ft USB Cable) -- No driver required. Just need to plug & play for the microphone to start recording, well compatible with Windows(7, 8, 10 and 11) and macOS. (NOT compatible with Xbox/Raspberry Pi/Android)
- Solid Construction--Adopting premium metal pipe and heavy-duty ABS stand to make sure that you will be satisfied with our computer mic quality
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/VocaHQ/vocalinux/main/install.sh -o /tmp/vl.sh && bash /tmp/vl.sh --interactive
The command downloads the installer to /tmp/vl.sh and launches its interactive mode. Review the installer prompts and stop if your distribution, Python version, or audio device does not meet the stated requirements.
Start and configure the app
- Launch Vocalinux after installation and confirm that its tray indicator is visible.
- Place the cursor in the terminal if the terminal is where you want text to appear.
- Hold Right Alt to dictate using the documented push-to-talk behavior, or enable toggle mode in Settings.
- Choose the language and model size offered by the application.
- Speak a short test sentence and verify that it appears in the focused terminal before attempting a command.
The project repository describes local engines including whisper.cpp, Whisper, Faster Whisper, VOSK, and Parakeet. These engines run on the machine after their models are downloaded. An optional remote API exists but is disabled unless you configure it, so check the selected engine and privacy settings if sending audio or text outside the computer is unacceptable.
The repository showed release v0.18.1 at the time covered here. Release numbers and setup screens can change; use the current project release information when following version-specific prompts.
Which route should you use?
Choose vosk-cli-dictation when
- You prefer a package installation and explicit command-line controls.
- You want to bind toggle, finalize, or sleep actions to your desktop shortcuts.
- You mainly dictate into a terminal, terminal editor, or another deliberately focused window.
- You want a small English model downloaded with a documented command and the ability to select another installed language with
--lang.
Choose Vocalinux when
- You want a tray application that can type into many desktop applications.
- You prefer Right Alt push-to-talk or a graphical toggle setting over shell commands.
- You want to choose among several local recognition engines and model sizes from the desktop interface.
- You use a supported Ubuntu-based desktop and value a single desktop-wide workflow.
Neither choice guarantees perfect transcription. The documentation reviewed for both projects does not provide an independently validated recognition-accuracy statistic, and no specific microphone or Ubuntu machine can be assumed to behave identically to another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot missing or incorrect text
No text appears in the terminal
- Click the terminal input area again and confirm that the cursor is visible.
- Run
vosk-cli-dictation --diagnoseif you are using the Vosk route. - Check the reported audio device, injection backend, session type, and model status.
- Speak a short phrase into the microphone and watch whether the recognizer indicates activity.
- Test in a simple text field. If text appears there but not in the terminal, the terminal may have lost focus or the injection backend may be incompatible with that session.
The model is missing
The Debian package does not include the acoustic model. Run vosk-cli-dictation --download-model en for the documented small English model, or install the model matching your selected language through the project’s model instructions. Restart the tool after model installation if it still reports an unavailable model.
Wayland hotkeys do nothing
Do not assume that an application-level global shortcut will work under Wayland. Bind the documented subcommand through the desktop environment’s keyboard-shortcut settings. Confirm that the shortcut launches the command, then use --diagnose to check injection and audio state.
The first install cannot download dependencies
Both the Vosk bindings and at least one speech model may be downloaded during setup. Check network connectivity, retry the package’s first run, and ensure that the model directory is writable. Once dependencies and models are present, local recognition can operate without a continuous connection.

Only part of a sentence appears
Short insertions can result from a silence timeout, an accidental toggle, or speech that was not captured by the selected microphone. Try toggle mode or push-to-talk, speak in shorter clauses, and watch the application state while talking. For long text, use the finalize control only after the complete phrase has been recognized.
Punctuation is wrong
Use the punctuation and newline command words documented for the selected language. Verify that the language flag and installed model match. Review the inserted line before execution; recognition systems can confuse punctuation, shell flags, and similarly pronounced words.
Privacy, offline use, and accuracy expectations
After models and dependencies are downloaded, the documented Vosk workflow can recognize speech locally. Vocalinux likewise describes local engines that run on the computer, while its remote API is optional and off unless configured. Local processing reduces the need to send audio to a service, but downloaded software and model files still need to be trusted and kept updated.
There is no independently validated accuracy figure established for these projects in the available documentation. Treat dictation as an input aid, not as a proofreader or command validator. Noise, accents, speech rate, microphone placement, language selection, and desktop injection all influence the text you receive.
A practical safety checklist for dictated commands
- Focus the intended terminal or editor before speaking.
- Keep destructive commands, passwords, API keys, and privileged arguments out of voice input whenever possible.
- Read every path, option, quote, redirection symbol, and number before pressing Enter.
- Use a harmless test such as
printforpwdto confirm that insertion works before running a state-changing command. - When a command spans several lines, dictate into a terminal editor or a temporary text file, inspect it, and execute only after validation.
- Stop or put the recognizer to sleep when you are speaking about something that should not be entered into the focused window.
Keeping the setup maintainable
Record which desktop session you use, which microphone is selected, the installed language model, and whether you are on Wayland or X11. Those details explain most differences when a setup works on one Ubuntu installation but not another. Recheck the project downloads and release pages before upgrading because package filenames, model instructions, desktop integrations, and version numbers are volatile.
For a terminal-first workflow, keep --diagnose readily available and test the microphone after changing audio devices. For Vocalinux, confirm the tray indicator and selected engine after an update. A brief test sentence is faster and safer than discovering an integration problem while entering a privileged command.
