Most people do not need to download Proton separately: Steam supplies and manages its Proton compatibility tools. Enable Steam Play or compatibility support, then choose a tool for a specific game only if the default does not work. On Steam Deck and desktop Linux, the details of the menus can vary by Steam client version, but the basic workflow is the same.
If you are asking “How do I install Proton on Steam Deck?” or “How do I enable Proton on Linux?”, start with Steam’s built-in tools. If one title will not launch, try a per-game compatibility override and gather a Proton log before assuming the whole setup is broken.
What is Proton, and how does it work?
Proton is Valve’s compatibility tool for running Windows games through the Steam client on Linux. Valve describes it as “a tool for use with the Steam client which allows games which are exclusive to Windows to run on the Linux operating system.” It combines Wine with additional components to translate the services and interfaces Windows games expect into ones that work on Linux. Most users should use the Proton version supplied by Steam rather than download a separate installer. Valve’s Proton project describes the tool and its intended use.

Steam can download and manage its own Proton versions, and you can choose a compatibility tool in Steam’s settings or override the choice for an individual game. The right starting point is therefore Steam’s own version, not a separate installer found elsewhere.

Steam’s term “Steam Play” refers to compatibility tools and related settings in the client; Proton is one such tool. It is not the same as Steam Linux Runtime, which provides a container framework. The distinction matters if Steam offers a runtime download: that is not another Proton version. Valve’s Steam Runtime documentation notes that Steam Linux Runtime 4.0 is used for Proton 11 or newer. In short, Proton provides the Windows-game compatibility mechanism, while the runtime is a separate piece of the environment used by Steam and some compatibility tools.
How do I install Proton on Steam Deck or Linux?
For the normal setup, install Steam and let the client download or update the compatibility tools it needs. Valve ships several Proton versions through Steam. There is generally no need to find a third-party installer or build Proton yourself.
The general sequence is simple: enable or use Steam’s compatibility support, allow the selected tool to finish downloading, and then launch the game. A download or update that is still in progress can be mistaken for a broken Proton installation, so check Steam’s download activity before troubleshooting the title.

Desktop Linux: enable Steam Play or compatibility support
- Open the Steam client and go to Steam > Settings.
- Open the section labeled Compatibility or Steam Play. The wording can change between Steam client revisions.
- Enable compatibility support for titles that need it, and select the Steam-provided tool if the client asks for a default.
- Allow Steam to download any selected compatibility tool. Wait for the download or update to finish before launching the game.
When you install or launch a Windows-only game, Steam may obtain the required Proton tool automatically. If a title does not launch, use its individual compatibility setting rather than assuming Proton is missing or that the whole installation is broken. Valve’s Proton documentation recommends the Steam-provided version for most users.
The client’s labels and arrangement can change, so treat “Compatibility” and “Steam Play” as the relevant area rather than relying on a specific label surviving every update. If the setting is available, choose a Steam-provided Proton tool and let Steam manage it. Installing Steam itself is a separate prerequisite: Proton is a Steam compatibility tool, not a standalone game launcher.
Steam Deck: use Steam’s built-in compatibility tools
Steam Deck uses SteamOS, a Linux-based system, and Steam manages its compatibility tools. You do not need a separate Proton installer for ordinary game use. Find the game’s compatibility controls in its properties to override the tool for that title. Menu names and navigation can vary with SteamOS and client revisions, so use the game’s Properties screen and look for its compatibility options rather than relying on a fixed Gaming Mode click path.

The same basic advice applies whether you are using the Deck’s normal Steam interface or Steam on a Linux desktop: start with Steam-managed compatibility, then change the selection only for a reason. If the Deck downloads a compatibility tool when you launch a game, let that process finish before testing. A runtime download is not necessarily a second Proton installation; Steam Linux Runtime and Proton have different roles.
How do I force a game to use Proton?
A per-game compatibility override is the practical way to make a Windows game use a particular tool without changing your settings for every title. It is also the safest way to compare versions: a setting for one game does not require changing the choice used by all your other games.
- In your Steam Library, open the game’s Properties.
- Find the game’s Compatibility or Steam Play control. The exact label may vary by client revision.
- Enable the option to force the use of a specific compatibility tool, if shown.
- Select a Steam-provided Proton version from the available list.
- Close Properties, let Steam finish any tool download, and launch the game again.
This setting applies to that game, so it is useful for testing a different Proton version without changing the default for other games. If the game still fails, return to Properties and restore the previous selection before trying another diagnostic. Steam documents game-specific launch options and compatibility-tool selection in its Proton project documentation.
“Force” means you are overriding the tool choice for that title; it does not guarantee the game will launch or that every Windows feature it uses will work. Make one change at a time and note which version you selected. That makes it easier to tell whether the override changed the symptom, and to undo it if the test is no better. You can use the same Properties area later to remove the override or select a different tool.
Which Proton option should I use?
Start with the Steam-managed default. Change it only to test a specific title or meet a clear development or troubleshooting need. No single Proton version is established as the best choice for every game, and compatibility can vary from title to title.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Option | Best for | Updates | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default Steam-managed Proton | Most players who want the simplest setup | Managed through Steam | May not resolve a game-specific issue |
| Another Steam-provided Proton version, selected per game | Testing whether a different tool works better for one title | Managed through Steam | Requires a per-game override and testing |
| Custom or community local build | Development, testing, or a specific compatibility workaround | Depends on how the build is distributed and maintained | More setup and maintenance; compatibility is not guaranteed |
The default is the lowest-maintenance option: Steam supplies it and manages its updates. A different Steam-provided version is a reasonable next test when one game has a problem, because you can apply it to that title alone and revert it easily. A custom build adds another source of files and another maintenance responsibility. It is worth considering only when you have a specific reason to use that build, not simply because there are several choices in the list.

Steamworks documentation says Proton has broad API coverage, that most games work out of the box, and that compatibility work continues. That is not a guarantee for a particular game or for every anti-cheat system; the documentation does not provide a current named-game pass/fail list. Check the game’s specific symptoms and use a different tool only as a targeted test. Steamworks’ Proton documentation provides the broad compatibility context.
There is no supported universal compatibility percentage or single “best” Proton version to recommend from the available documentation. A game’s result depends on the title and the specific problem you are trying to solve. Avoid treating a successful test with one game as proof that the same tool is best for every game, and do not assume a version change will resolve an issue unrelated to Proton.
How do I install a custom Proton build?
Use a local build only when you have a specific reason, such as development, testing, or a workaround that calls for a build not already available in Steam. Valve’s documented manual location is ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/. Steam library layouts differ, so avoid assuming that a particular library folder is universal.
- Obtain the redistributable files for the Proton build you intend to use.
- Create a directory for that tool under
~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/. - Place the build’s redistributable directory inside the new tool directory, preserving the structure provided with that build.
- Restart the Steam client so it can discover the local tool.
- Open Steam Play or the game’s compatibility controls, then select the new tool for the relevant title.
The Steam restart is important: placing files in the directory is not the same as having the client recognize the tool immediately. After restarting, check the available compatibility-tool choices. If the new build is not listed, recheck that it is in the documented directory and that you preserved the build’s provided directory structure. Avoid copying instructions that hard-code an old, version-specific Steam library path; the documented location above is the manual compatibility-tools location.
For a Proton build you have compiled, Valve’s repository also documents make install as an automated installation route. Building Proton is an advanced workflow, not the recommended installation method for ordinary players. Consult the official Proton repository for the current build and installation instructions. A locally installed build may require you to follow its distributor’s maintenance and update process; Steam-managed releases remain simpler for most users.
Where is my Proton log, and how do I troubleshoot a failed launch?
Start by confirming that the game has the compatibility tool you intend to use and that Steam has finished installing or updating it. Then collect a Proton log for that game. Logs can help distinguish a game-specific failure from a general Steam setup issue.

Work through the failure in a deliberate order. First check that Steam itself is running normally and that any compatibility-tool download has completed. Next check which tool the game is actually set to use; an override on that game can differ from the general setting. If the tool selection is correct but the problem persists, reproduce the issue with logging enabled. This gives you evidence to investigate the title-specific failure instead of making several unrelated changes at once.
Generate a log for one game
- Open the game’s Properties in Steam.
- In its launch options, enter
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%. - Launch the game and reproduce the problem.
- Look in your home directory for a file named in the pattern
steam-$APPID.log, where$APPIDis the game’s Steam application ID.
To save logs elsewhere, set PROTON_LOG_DIR to a directory path as documented by Valve. The default pattern is useful because it identifies the log by the game’s Steam application ID; it is not a generic file called “Proton log.” If you are gathering more than one log, match the application ID in the filename to the title you reproduced.
Logs contain troubleshooting detail, but they can also reveal private paths or account-related information. Before sharing a log in a project issue or support discussion, inspect it and remove or redact personal information. A log is diagnostic evidence, not an automatic fix; use its output to describe what happened and what tool and launch options were active. See the Proton documentation for the logging variables and options.
Try a targeted graphics-path test only when relevant
For a supported Direct3D path, PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% asks Proton to use OpenGL-based wined3d instead of Vulkan-based DXVK. This is a troubleshooting experiment, not a universal performance fix; it may not help a given game or graphics issue. Valve notes that these runtime options do not permanently change the Wine prefix. Remove the option from launch options to return to the prior behavior. If logs or symptoms indicate a Vulkan or driver problem, consult the current instructions for your Linux distribution and GPU vendor rather than applying an unrelated Proton workaround.
Use this option only as a controlled test when the issue points toward the graphics path. Do not leave it enabled as a general performance tweak or assume that OpenGL-based wined3d will be faster. If the test does not help, remove the launch option and return to the previous configuration. The documented behavior is temporary: the option does not permanently alter the Wine prefix.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check Steam’s Linux client requirement if Steam itself will not run
Valve’s Steam for Linux repository states that, starting 2025-08-15, the Steam client requires glibc 2.31 or newer. This is a requirement for the Steam for Linux client, not a Proton-specific installation step. It is relevant if Steam itself fails to run on a Linux system; it does not identify the cause of every game launch failure. Check Valve’s Steam for Linux repository for the client requirement.

Graphics-driver needs are not one universal Proton requirement: they vary by GPU, Linux distribution, and game. If the error or log points to Vulkan or a graphics driver, consult current instructions from your distribution and GPU vendor. Avoid applying dated Ubuntu package commands or old requirement lists as general advice; current official documentation does not establish universal installation commands for every Linux setup.

- Downloading an unrelated installer: Steam supplies Proton for normal use; use a custom local build only when you have a specific need.
- Changing the global default to fix one game: use the game’s own compatibility override to keep the test isolated.
- Assuming every Windows game works: support differs by title, and broad API coverage is not a guarantee of compatibility.
- Treating Steam Linux Runtime as Proton: the runtime is a container framework, while Proton is the compatibility tool for Windows games.
- Trying a graphics workaround without a symptom: the wined3d option is a targeted test, not a general recommendation.
- Building Proton as a routine installation step: building is intended for advanced workflows; most users should begin with the version Steam provides.
- Sharing logs without checking them: review log contents for personal paths or account information before posting them publicly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I install Proton on Steam Deck?
For ordinary use, you do not need a separate installer. Steam on Steam Deck manages its compatibility tools; let it download or update the required tool. Use the game’s Properties and compatibility controls if you need to override the tool for that title. Menu names can vary, so avoid relying on a fixed Gaming Mode click path.
How do I enable Proton on Linux?
In the Steam desktop client, open Steam Settings and look for Compatibility or Steam Play. Enable compatibility support for titles that need it and choose a Steam-provided tool if asked. Labels can vary between client revisions, and Steam may download a tool when you install or launch a Windows game.
How do I force a game to use Proton?
Open the game’s Properties in your Steam Library, find its Compatibility or Steam Play control, enable the option to force a specific compatibility tool if shown, and select a Steam-provided Proton version. This is a per-game override; it does not guarantee the game will work.
How do I change Proton versions for one game?
Use that game’s Properties and select a different available compatibility tool in its compatibility controls. Let Steam finish any download, then retest the game. You can return to the previous selection or remove the override if the change does not help.
Where is my Proton log?
Add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game’s launch options and launch it again. By default, Valve documents the log filename pattern as steam-$APPID.log in your home directory. Set PROTON_LOG_DIR to use another directory, and inspect the file for private information before sharing it.
Should I install a custom Proton build?
Usually not. Steam-managed Proton is the recommended starting point. Consider a custom local build for development, testing, or a specific compatibility workaround. Valve’s manual location is ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/; restart Steam after placing the build so the client can discover it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does Proton work with every Windows game or anti-cheat system?
No. Proton has broad API coverage and many games work, but compatibility varies by title. The cited documentation does not provide a current named-game pass/fail list or guarantee for every anti-cheat system.
The Bottom Line
For most Steam Deck and Linux players, installing Proton means letting Steam manage its built-in compatibility tools. Start with the default, use a per-game override to test another version, and install a local build only for a specific advanced need. If a game fails, confirm the selected tool, generate a log with PROTON_LOG=1 %command%, and troubleshoot the title’s symptoms rather than assuming all of Proton is broken.
