Install the Private Internet Access (PIA) app from PIA’s official desktop download page, the Apple App Store, or Google Play, then sign in with an active PIA subscription. On Windows and macOS you run the installer and approve the operating-system prompt; on iPhone you allow the VPN configuration; on Android you approve VPN and (if selected) notification permissions. After setup, tap or click the power button to connect. PIA chooses an optimal server automatically, or you can search for a location yourself.
The steps and settings below reflect PIA’s platform guides dated September 9–18, 2026. Labels can vary slightly with app releases, but the permission and connection sequence is the same.
What you need before installing
- An active PIA subscription. PIA states that an active subscription is required to use its app.
- Your PIA account username and password, or access to the account email for a magic sign-in link. A subscription bought through iOS or Android can also be restored with its purchase receipt.
- An operating system within PIA’s currently listed compatibility range.
- Permission to install software and approve VPN configuration changes on the device.
Current compatibility
| Platform | Supported version listed by PIA | Installation source |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit only, or ARM64 | PIA’s official Windows download page |
| macOS | macOS 10.15 or newer by direct download; macOS 12.0 or newer through the Mac App Store | PIA’s download page or the Mac App Store |
| Android | Android 7.0 or newer | Google Play |
| iPhone/iPad | iOS 15 or newer | Apple App Store |
Use the newest installer shown in your PIA Client Control Panel or on the official download page. Older installers may fail on a supported operating-system release even when the device itself meets the requirements.

Install and use PIA on Windows 10 or 11
Install the Windows app
- Open PIA’s Windows download page and select Download PIA for Windows.
- When the download finishes, open the installer.
- Approve the Windows User Account Control prompt. The installer then completes the installation.
- Open PIA and select Log In.
- Enter the PIA username and password created with your subscription, then select Log in. If your account offers a magic-link sign-in, use the link delivered to the account email instead.
Keep the PIA account credentials separate from the Windows administrator credentials: Windows may ask for administrator approval, but that prompt is an operating-system permission and not a second PIA login.

Make the first connection
- Select the large power button in the PIA window.
- PIA connects to the most optimal server location automatically by default.
- When you need a particular country or city, open the VPN SERVER widget, search the server list, or sort locations by latency, and select a location.
- To return to automatic selection, choose Choose automatically.
The power button and connection indicator show whether the tunnel is active. Disconnect by selecting the same button again.
Choose a protocol
Windows supports OpenVPN and WireGuard. PIA describes OpenVPN as the default and also provides WireGuard. To change it, open Settings > Protocols, select the protocol, and reconnect. A protocol change does not take effect until the next connection.
Windows network and privacy controls
- DNS and port forwarding: Network settings include DNS controls and port forwarding. Port forwarding is unavailable on US locations, so the option may disappear or be unavailable when a US server is selected.
- VPN Kill Switch: Blocks traffic from leaving through the normal connection when the VPN drops.
- Advanced Kill Switch: Applies a stricter block so traffic cannot pass unless the VPN is connected. Use it when an accidental unprotected connection is unacceptable; remember that it can also block all internet access during an outage.
- MACE: PIA’s DNS-based blocking feature for ads, trackers, and known malicious domains.
Automation and split tunneling
Windows automation rules can connect or disconnect PIA based on the network type. For example, you can require the VPN on public Wi-Fi while allowing it to disconnect on a trusted network. Review each rule after changing Wi-Fi names or adapters so a rule does not silently target an old network.

Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*
- 【Easy Setup】Please refer to the User Manual and the Unboxing & Setup video guide on Amazon for detailed setup instructions and methods for connecting to the Internet.
- 【Pocket-friendly】Lightweight design(145g) which designed for your next trip or adventure. Alongside its portable, compact design makes it easy to take with you on the go.
- 【Full Gigabit Ports】Gigabit Wireless Internet Router with 2 Gigabit LAN ports and 1 Gigabit WAN ports, ideal for lots of internet plan and allow you to connect your wired devices directly.
- 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.
Split tunneling lets you choose applications and IP addresses that use the VPN or bypass it, and lets you specify DNS behavior. Add only the apps or addresses that genuinely need a different route; an overly broad exclusion can send more traffic outside the tunnel than intended.
Install and use PIA on macOS
Install the Mac app
- Download the macOS installer ZIP from PIA’s official download page, or install the app from the Mac App Store when your Mac meets that store version’s requirement.
- For the direct download, open the ZIP in Downloads and open the installer.
- When macOS asks to open the installer, confirm.
- Enter the username and password for your Mac account when the installer requests permission to install the helper. This is the Mac login, not your PIA password.
- When the welcome screen appears, select LOG IN and enter your PIA account credentials. A magic email link is available where offered.
Connect and select a location
- Use the main power button to connect. PIA initially chooses an optimal location automatically.
- Open the VPN SERVER control to select a specific location.
- Search the location list or sort it by latency, then select the desired server.
- Select Choose automatically whenever you want PIA to select the location again.
Protocol and network settings
macOS supports OpenVPN and WireGuard. Network settings include PIA DNS selection, port forwarding, and Allow LAN Traffic. Allow LAN Traffic can be useful for printers, media servers, or other devices on your local network, but enabling it permits local-network traffic that a stricter isolation policy would block.
Privacy, automation, and split tunnel
- VPN Kill Switch: Prevents traffic from going outside the VPN during a connection loss.
- Advanced Kill Switch: Enforces the stricter always-block-until-connected behavior.
- PIA MACE: DNS-based blocking for ads, trackers, and known malicious domains.
- Automation: Rules can connect or disconnect for protected Wi-Fi, open Wi-Fi, or a wired connection.
- Split Tunnel: Routes selected apps or IP addresses through the VPN or outside it.
Use Multi-Hop carefully
Multi-Hop is available when OpenVPN is selected. It adds a proxy hop after the VPN server. PIA warns that the extra server can reduce speed, so enable it for a specific routing requirement rather than as a default setting. If an application becomes slow or fails to connect, disable Multi-Hop first and test with a normal OpenVPN connection.

Install and use PIA on iPhone
Install, sign in, and approve the VPN configuration
- Open the Apple App Store, search for the PIA app, and tap Install or the cloud icon.
- Open PIA and tap Login.
- Choose a username and password, a magic email link, or purchase-receipt restoration when the subscription was bought through Apple.
- Decide whether to allow notifications. Your choice controls status notifications; it is separate from the VPN tunnel permission.
- When the VPN configuration screen appears, tap OK, then tap Allow.
- Enter the device passcode if iOS requests it.
Allowing the VPN configuration is mandatory. Without it, the VPN will not work because iOS has not given PIA permission to create the system VPN profile.
Connect and disconnect
- Tap the red power button.
- When connected, the button turns green and displays the server name.
- Tap the button again to disconnect.
iOS controls
- Protocols: WireGuard and OpenVPN are available.
- Kill switch and leak protection: Enabled by default and adjustable under Settings > Privacy Features.
- DNS: Open Settings > Network > DNS to choose the DNS behavior.
- Automation: Rules can connect or disconnect on secure Wi-Fi, open Wi-Fi, mobile data, or selected Wi-Fi networks.
If PIA is unavailable in your particular App Store, PIA documents an alternative using OpenVPN Connect and configuration files. That method requires importing the supplied configuration into OpenVPN Connect and signing in there; it is separate from the normal PIA app installation flow.
Install and use PIA on Android
Install and sign in
- Open Google Play, search for PIA, tap Install, wait for the installation to finish, and tap Open.
- Sign in with your PIA credentials, restore a subscription bought through Google Play with its purchase receipt, or use a magic email link.
- When PIA requests VPN permission, tap OK.
- Choose whether the app may send notifications. Android then shows its notification permission prompt; accept or decline according to your preference.
Connect and verify status
- Tap the power button.
- The app reports Protected when the VPN is connected.
- Not Protected means the tunnel is disconnected; tap the button again or inspect the selected server and permission status.
Android protocols and routing
Open Settings > Protocols to choose WireGuard or OpenVPN. Android’s kill switch uses the operating system’s VPN controls rather than only an in-app toggle: open Android VPN settings, enable Always-on VPN, and enable Block connections without VPN. The exact menu location can vary by Android manufacturer.

Troubleshoot installation and connection problems
The installer will not run or the app will not open
- Check the compatibility table above, including Windows architecture and the different macOS requirements for direct download versus Mac App Store.
- Download the current installer from PIA’s Client Control Panel or official download page instead of reusing an old file.
- Install pending Windows updates when using Windows.
- On macOS, review the security warning and allow the installer through the system’s security controls when you trust the downloaded installer.
- Temporarily test in Safe Mode if security software or another program may be interfering. Re-enable protection after testing.
- Reinstall the PIA app if the installation is incomplete or the app opens and immediately closes.
The app installs but will not connect
- Confirm that the subscription is active and that you are signing in to the account that owns it.
- Return to automatic server selection, then try a different location. A specific server can be unavailable even when the app is working.
- Reconnect after changing OpenVPN/WireGuard or any kill-switch setting.
- On iPhone, revisit the VPN profile approval. If the configuration was denied, the app cannot create a working tunnel.
- On Android, verify that VPN permission was accepted and that Always-on VPN or Block connections without VPN is not conflicting with another VPN profile.
- On desktop, inspect automation and split-tunnel rules. A rule may disconnect on the current network or route the affected application outside the tunnel.
The internet stops when PIA disconnects
This is expected when a kill switch is active, especially Advanced Kill Switch on desktop or Android’s Block connections without VPN. Reconnect PIA to restore traffic, or turn off the stricter control only if you accept the possibility of ordinary internet traffic during a VPN outage.
Local devices stop working
Printers, file shares, and media devices may require local-network access. On macOS and Android, review Allow LAN Traffic. On Windows, review split-tunnel and DNS rules. Changing these settings can improve local access but changes which traffic is protected by the VPN.

Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Account sign-in and subscription restoration
PIA credentials are used both in the apps and in the PIA dashboard, where the subscription can be managed and downloads can be found. A magic email link avoids typing the password on a device, while purchase-receipt restoration is intended for subscriptions bought through Apple or Google. If restoration fails, verify that the store account used for the purchase is the same one currently signed in to the device, then try the normal PIA account credentials.
Using PIA day to day
For routine use, leave the app’s automatic server selection enabled and connect with the power button when you need the VPN. Choose a location manually when a service requires a particular region or when the automatic location is unsuitable. Treat kill-switch, DNS, split-tunnel, Per App Settings, automation, and Multi-Hop as deliberate policy choices: each changes either availability, routing, or what happens during a connection failure. After any major operating-system update, confirm that the VPN profile, startup behavior, and automation rules still match your intended setup.
